Chimpazilla
"Apparitions" (Super Mario World Castle theme) Chimpazilla's comments: Another Chimp-Emu collab coming at ya! This was a wip that Wes put together a few years back, but he lost motivation for it, so he sent it to me. I was immediately interested, and I loved the fact that the arrangement structure was already about 90% mapped out, ready to be worked on. I ran with it, I wrote an intro for it, and we shipped stems back and forth but I ultimately ended up with the file. (The next collab coming up for submission is the opposite situation: it was my initial wip, and Wes took over the file! A perfect criss-cross situation.) "Apparitions" is another track where we both worked on it in a frenzy and every idea was a winner. The track was originally intended to be a lo-fi bop but my additions pretty much killed that idea! The result is a half-time chillout groove that Wes and I are both super happy with. The arrangement sounds so eerie and groovy at the same time. Wes is 100% responsible for that utterly astounding outro! I'm sounding like a broken record here, but look out for more Chimp-Emu collabs coming up soon! Release date request: Since the track sounds so spooky-ooky, perhaps it could get a Halloween release? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Emunator's Comments: This song started its life as a 20-second lo-fi demo back in 2021 that never went anywhere. Fast forward several years, and it found new life as the latest entry in our ever-growing catalog of collaborations that just felt right. After hearing Kris' intro, the vibe was completely changed for the better, and it inspired me to get back to work on this, instead pulling more inspiration from gritty industrial sounds and the quirky haunting synth tones of Celeste. This track was always destined to be like this, it just took a few years before it fell into the right hands to get it there! Letting go of a concept to a collaborator, even a demo that has been gathering dust for years, can be extremely anxiety inducing. That said, I can say that I never feel that fear working with Kris. She gets it. She has an innate ability to understand both the existing spirit of a song, and its unrealized potential, and bringing both halves of the equation together in a way that shines every time. Liontamer
Let's see how we did with this different type of collab scenario. Bass at :51 was produced in a way where it's doesn't sound focused/forward enough, if that makes sense, it's more of an indistinct low drone, but it's still somewhat recognizable from the theme. The melodic variations sound good, and I liked playing with the timing of it, dragging it just a bit to alter its feeling. I liked the original countermelodic line added in at 1:12 as well, that was a very nice touch. Nice line handling the source's countermelody at 1:45, that was very cool sound design, a fluttery feeling to it. So well personalized, and nice dynamic contrast at 2:45 that was less beat-driven and more atmospheric until 3:04. Some nice swagger until 3:26, then a little mellower while still beefing up the textures a touch. Loads of ear candy throughout, while the arrangement personalization is way up there, this is how you do it. :-) YES
prophetik music
some 2spoopy4u flutters on the opening, alongside some cello and filtered percussion. there's a bassy drop and the primary chord progression comes in alongside a half-time beat. i actually liked the bass here, it feels similar to the original's bass elements. melodic material comes in at 1:01. i love the idea of having it playing ahead of the beat and letting the echo/antecedent be where it's supposed to be, really adds to the disconcerting nature alongside the wooble synth you're using for a lead. there's a drop at 1:43 and we get a dose of a freaky ghost beat right after. the melodic material here gets lost a bit initially behind all the ear candy, but honestly the ear candy's cool enough i don't mind. the claps are pretty loud too. 2:42's a beat drop and transition section into another funky beat at 3:05. i like the attention on the lead here a lot, the subtle swells are really nice, and the continuing changes to the beat and lead elements help keep me locked in despite the melody being so simple. 3:49 kind of feels like the start of an outro, and after some pageantry between the lead and bass, we get one last big chord and some flutters on the way out the door. this has a really lush, interesting feel throughout. there's always something more to find when you dig in. as usual, superb job. Hemophiliac
This is the kind of track that is produced so well, that it makes you want to turn up the volume. This is prime example of anti-loudness war in a modern genre. Kudos on that front. Spoopyhop? Trippyhaunt? I dunno what to call it, but it's all kinds of good. Arrangement is fantastic and dripping in personalization and creative ear candy. My personal highlight of the arrangement is the background arp that kicks in 1:48 during the B section of the original source. Auto-panning this makes it like a ghost that is sneaking back and forth going playing tricks on you. What more can I say, this is great.
