Liontamer ⚖️ Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 Artist Name: Alex Robinson This remix deviates a fair bit from the original but there are also a few other Metal Gear motifs thrown in at certain points ('Enclosure', 'Mantis' Hymn', 'Theme of Solid Snake - Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake' - as linked in Games & Sources) I was inspired by the mix of orchestral elements with a metal band as heard on certain tracks from FF7 Remake/Rebirth's OSTs ('The Airbuster', 'Midgardsormr'), so tried to do something in that style! Games & Sources This is primarily based on 'Escape' from the Metal Gear Solid OST: 'Theme of Solid Snake' from Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake: 'Mantis' Hymn' from Metal Gear Solid: 'Enclosure' from Metal Gear Solid:
prophetik music ⚖️ Posted November 14, 2024 Posted November 14, 2024 immediately recognizable right off the jump. strings and choir samples aren't stunning but they're serviceable. the guitar's mixed pretty hot but i like the tone a lot for this style. first break comes in at 0:55 and it's short, but does herald a change of style. the first real change to the string parts don't show until like 1:15, which isn't great, but the updated stuff for this section do sound good and are a nice thing to emphasize. there's a change to a faster feel at 2:18 which is a cool sound. i wish there'd been a break before this, though, this is several minutes in a row of machine-gun drums and guitars, and a breather would have helped out a lot. i like the unison brass and lower guitar section at around 3:00. there's not much of an ending, just a final held chord and it's done. this is a pretty straightforward adaptation of the theme. the guitar work sounds good, and after the 75-second mark i like the backing elements a lot. nice work. jnWake ⚖️ Posted March 24 Posted March 24 Starts with the "Escape" strings motif but the metal adaptation changes things up pretty quickly with a big entrance at 0:04. As far as I can tell the lead guitar is mostly original material but it fits well and makes the track sound more "epic". This continues until 0:55, with the "Escape" chord progression lifted straight from the source. I'll say more about production later but I wanted to highlight how nice the drums sound, very punchy! At the same time, however, the lead guitar is too big and takes a lot of space from the rhytm guitar. 0:55 has a small break but then continues with the same guitar riff from the previous section while adding other elements from "Escape" on top, like the brass melody and the classic Metal Gear string melody. 1:20 introduces a new riff which I feel is original? There's some variations then and around 1:45 we return to the main riff. At 2:06 there's a fast section with Mantis' theme, pretty cool. 2:18 has some nice guitar shredding over the "Escape" chords again and 2:44 introduces the "Enclosure" melody. Finally, there's a cool riff at 3:10 which ends the track. On the arrangement side this is great. Intense rock for almost 3 and a half minutes with nice riffs and a lot of variety, not a boring moment in here! Usage of sources is easily identifiable even if a lot of it is background material for guitar leads. There's a few sections where I couldn't tell which source was being covered but they add to like 40 seconds tops so no issues there. Great job on the arrangement! On production, like I mentioned earlier, the drums sound great, very punchy and clear. Guitar tones are also great, both leads and rhytms pack a punch. Bass takes more of a back seat in the arrangement but it's very present on the mix. Now, I do have one issue here, which I'm not 100% on but I'll point it out anyway and see what others judges think about it. Rhytm guitars seem to not be double tracked (you know, the practice of having 2 takes of the rhytm guitar part, one panned heavily L and other heavily R), and that takes a lot of power away from the track. I checked this by listening to L/R channels separately. In a double tracked recording you'd usually hear a LOT of rhytm guitars on each one, but here I don't hear them particularly strongly on the side channels, which leads me to believe this wasn't double tracked. Now, why does that matter? Basically, it lets the rhytm guitar and other elements coexist in an easier way. In this mix, although rhytm guitars are definitely present they also get lost whenever there's a loud lead, which is a shame as the rhytm writing is pretty cool. Honestly, I had something of an internal debate about what to vote here. I think the lead/rhytm balance could be improved and make for an even better track but on its current state the track's still a banger and, as such, deserves to be on the main page. YES
Hemophiliac ⚖️ Posted March 25 Posted March 25 This is pretty slick. You 100% nailed what you were going for in trying to get a FF7Remake/Rebirth boss battle vibe going. The different themes were woven together nicely, feels like one new piece of music to me. The guitar tone is really good, no problem with the leads at all. The rhythm guitars were lost some, and it might be due to what jnWake suggested. Losing some power due to not being double tracked out. I really liked the staccato choir chants as an accent to pickup the energy before getting into "Enclosure" from Metal Gear Solid. Super high energy for 3:26 and I'm surprisingly not exhausted from a lack of change of pace. Switching off to other sources did well to prevent that. YES
