jordex
anyyybody? it makes xm files or something like that
Cerrax
The type of software is called a tracker. There are different trackers and they make different kinds of chiptunes. IT, SID, XM, NSF, (and there is a converter to make XM files into SPCs). I don't really know much more than that. Look to people like OverCoat for that info. OverCoat
http://ekid.nintendev.com/xms/ to make .xm files, use FastTracker 2 or Modplug Tracker, the readme for XMSNES gives you more guidelines. now, get tracking, 64 kb at a time :3 though I don't consider SPC "chiptunes" myself, enough other people do so whatever. If you wanted to make NES or Genesis music, I can point you to FamiTracker and TFM Maker, respectively Also yes, it is confusing. At first, anyway. But this is the method composers had to use back then, and it's kinda fun for people like me
jordex
thanks thankss! this stuff sounds pretty familiar to me now, i remember looking it up a while back. what type of tracker do you guys suggest is best?
OverCoat
Well, since they're all specialised trackers, I suggest using the one with your favourite sound chip of the moment
jordex
modplug is asking which directory is for instruments are there packs or something i should download? ahaa wow they are confusing.. Also, are these what those at chiptune.com use to make their songs
OverCoat
Yes, they are. mp3 is for wimps
jordex
is there anyway to hook up a midi keyboard to any of these trackers?
OverCoat
lol nope! the typing keyboard is good enough for note input with these. The devs probably could've added midi keyboard support if they wanted, but sound accuracy is probably more important to them

OverCoat
Laggy? I have an old keyboard going through a DIN5->PS/2 adapter and it's nowhere near laggy. Something's wrong with your shit

Dafydd
Is there an SPC tracker out there, or a way to convert mods into SPCs? BTW, I just got MadTracker and it totally sucks. I really preferred Famitracker over it. Is there a mod tracker that works more like Famitracker does?
OverCoat
Is there an SPC tracker out there, or a way to convert mods into SPCs? http://ekid.nintendev.com/xms/ Come on, I linked to this already

ModPlug and FamiTracker both support MIDI keyboards.
OverCoat
Oh so very, very wrong. ModPlug and FamiTracker both support MIDI keyboards. I know this. I was actually talking about TFM Maker and FamiTracker. FamiTracker does support MIDI input, though last time I checked [last year?] it didn't work at all. Dafydd
Sorry, didn't realize it was capable of making spcs (thought it was just an xm tracker). Famitracker does MIDI just fine, btw. If you're having issues, they're on your end. EDIT: Wow, I totally don't get XMSNES. Whoever made it seems to take for granted that I know how SPC's actually work. Sheesh. Won't get far with that. Anyway, I still haven't found a tracker I like. Though I guess modplug tracker is alright.
Teh Mick
There is also a tracker for sequencing SID (Commodore 64 sound chip) called GoatTracker: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GoatTracker Very old-school tracker but very nice. Check out the examples, there is a conver of a song of Stratovarius
Dafydd
So, can SIDs be converted into mod/s3m/xm/it then?
OverCoat
No. At least, not yet. We'll have to wait until someone in #mod_shrine becomes bored again everyone in there is working on trackers for the DS now.
