Instrumental & Vocal Skills (Other)

  1. Sonic 3D Blast (SAT) 'Snow' Well this is something interesting. Somebody should go play this in a mall on the eve of Christmas while everyone’s shopping. That ought to get some heads bobbing in the heat of the Christmas rush, especially with that little interlude at about 1:03. Great work, Jivemaster, keep it up.
  2. Ok... this is... yeah. Ok, really neat. Nothing really "wrong" with the notation or instrumentation here. Just solid work really. The only thing I might have changed was the attack on the strings. A lot of times they seemed to be behind the beat (maybe the intention, though I can't imagine why), especially the strings with slow attack, and then the staccato (not to be confused with pizzicato) strings seemed to be just a tad behind, which might be fixed by simply moving the notes back a fraction of a step. But anyway, other than that and the fact that it didn't seem loud enough (could be my speakers), this was one solid piece of work. Nice mix of orchestral and electronic elements and to be quite honest, it reminded me of the music from "The Saint" a bit. Anyway, don't miss this one. It's a keeper (like one of those wives that you don't want to cheat on... do those exist?). DC
  3. Rez 'Fear (Arrakis: GIGA)' I have a confession to make: I've never seen Dune. Or played Rez *stunned silence* Now on to the mix... it's very interesting, but not my cup of tea. I'm never fond of mixes where the voice samples seem to take center stage as they do in here (unless it's Daknit finding some great innuendo in innocent StarCraft lines. ^^) but maybe I'm biased cause I'm not familiar with any of the source material. Once the music takes center stage it gets a tad better, but it plays the same short theme over and over and over... I'll be humming it in my sleep now. So I guess there's not much stuff here that I really enjoyed. But if you're into Dune or Rez, you might.
  4. Phantasy Star Online 'Lobby Static' If you've read through my reviews, you'll know that I'm not a fan of static in mixes. This song is no real exception, although there isn't an abundance of loud static in the song, which is good as far as I'm concerned. Now see, this is all personal opinion but, to me, this song sounds like it's being held back. There are some parts where it seems the song is allowed to "shine through" (examples: 0:40, 1:10) but these shining moments don't last long before the song seems to be subdued again. Once again, only my opinion, but I felt as though the song would have been much better if, at 0:40 where the song was first allowed to break through, it had stayed above the static. It just feels to me that throughout the length of the song, it's struggling to be heard, to be seen. Was this intentional? Was Quinn Fox trying to portray this battle between music and static that perceive? Who knows. Personal Rating: 2/5
  5. Resident Evil 2 'Lost Sanctuary' This is smooth, very smooth. Not a lot of instruments here, but a very clean mix. Not sure if it belongs in a Jazz mix, but I like the sitar. Of course, I’m not sure if I’d classify this as Jazz at all, but then I’m no master of genre’s and saying which song belongs where. This is a nice collaboration, although maybe a tad long considering the amount of movement in the tune.
