(I don't know whether this goes in here or Music Production) Since someone created a guitar thread, I decided to create a bass thread I just started playing bass again recently. It's really fun. I created a Spotify playlist of songs that have dirty, nasty, funky basslines: https://play.spotify.com/user/seankn64/playlist/109pfyxAwNARt3J7yXJhH6 Right now it only has indie rock, but I'm open to suggestions on what to put in it. The entire genre of dance-punk/electro-rock/new rave has awesome basslines. What are your favorite bass-centric songs? Are there any OC Remixes where bass is the main instrument? For people who play bass, what kind of bass do you have? Do you have a favorite effect pedal? I'm thinking of getting a Bass Big Muff Pi or a Bass Sansamp, because I heard they're good.

(Someone please correct me if I'm wrong) I thought in the US, when playing songs live (or DJing) the licensing fees are the responsibility of the venue, not the performer. The venue pays a fee to BMI or ASCAP, and that gives performers the right to play any song they want, including covers. Even if a bar does a karaoke night, they still have to pay the fee. A bar near me actually got sued because they weren't paying their fee, which caused them to shut down. One of the only music venues in the state, too ;_; This only applies to live performances, though. If you're recording a song and selling it, what everyone else said applies.

How about some newer bands? I saw a band called Screaming Females last week, and they can SHRED. So many guitar solos.... The entire time I was like @ワ@. If modern rock gives you a deficiency in vitamins E, A, D, G, B, and E, you should see them Their live shows have way more crazy guitar solos than their recorded songs, which is really what a band should do when they play live. The guitar solo in the video starts at about 7:00, but you should listen to the whole thing anyway.

I was disappointed with musictheory.net. It doesn't go into enough detail. Here's what I posted in another thread: I just read a book called Harmony for Computer Musicians. It's AMAZING. It goes into so much detail about different kinds of chords and chord progressions and how to use them. I'm only 1/3 of the way through, but I've already learned a lot. You'll have to know some basic stuff (like scales, chords, the circle of fifths) before reading it though. I also found a random PDF on Reddit called Music Theory: The TLDR Version. It's short, but it gets to the point and explains a lot of advanced concepts like secondary dominants, altered chords, suspensions, etc. Just ignore the stupid memes.

I was about to ask the same thing. If I record a piano part, can I chop it up or reverse it?

Wait, so finger drumming is allowed? I shouldn't have left my Maschine at my parents' house... I have some more questions. Does the live part have to be all in one take, or can we stitch together multiple takes? Can it be like a 16-bar loop, or performed all the way through? Are we allowed to collaborate with other people? Like, can one person compose the music and have another person perform it?

I was just about to say "DAT CAR THO" (sorry) I'm so glad they have a car in this one. More JRPGs need to have cars. Like in Tales of Xillia, it didn't make sense for them to walk everywhere in an advanced techno-magical world.

I was going to post this! Related to this is this video by James Murphy: Even the guy behind the mega hit dance-rock band LCD Soundsystem had issues starting out.Another piece of advice: I went to a show by a guy named Phutureprimitive (really awesome producer btw, you should check him out) and I got a chance to talk to him after the show. I asked him if he had any advice for aspiring producers, and he said the best advice he could give is listen to a LOT of music. If you listen to a huge variety of music and don't limit yourself, inspiration will come naturally.

Are Kantai Collection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kantai_Collection) remixes allowed here? Kantai Collection is a super popular browser game about WW2 era Japanese battleships personified as cute girls. It's pretty unknown in the west, but in Japan it's literally the biggest thing since Touhou. Most synths have a vibrato option in them. Here's an example: On the right side, you have the depth (how much pitch change there is), rate, and in the middle you can set the attack time (how long it takes to kick in).

I didn't make this song, but I'm planning on doing something similar in terms of arrangement and ratio between the original song/new composition. It's also literally one of the best songs I have ever heard. Here is the original song for reference:
