*NO* Zombies Ate My Neighbors 'AGENT ZOMBI'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
What to add that the boys haven't already said? Treatment of the source is great, although I feel like there could be just a tad more energy or change-up to keep me focused. Add a little more of your own touch, and I'd love to pass this. NO (please resubmit) -
I'll be the third to echo that the reverb needs to be toned down. I'll also agree that you could add some overall humanization to make this feel a little less rigid, which would fit the style better as well. Along with that, the overall mix remains pretty close to the source, and I'd love to see you expand more with your own ideas into this. The second half is really nice, and I like where you went with it, I just need more! NO (resubmit)

OCR02418 - *YES* Retro City Rampage 'Ignition'
DragonAvenger replied to Nutritious's topic in Judges Decisions
I think I will always be impressed with Justin's ability to make synth brass work, and really work well. Love how you used the brass to add a lot of energy to the track, and overall the flow between the orchestral instruments and rock instruments is very smooth. Aibou guitars sound great (but I might be a tad biased); the style and energy fit the context very well. High energy, high awesome. YES -
*NO* Chrono Trigger 'House of Green'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Thought about this one for a while, and I think I'm going to have to side with Andrew on this. The main points that are getting to me are how long it takes for the source to hit, and the minor production issues that are adding up. Hit those things up, and I'd love to pass this. NO (please resubmit) -
OCR03209 - *YES* Final Fantasy 9 'Ground Zero'
DragonAvenger replied to halc's topic in Judges Decisions
Nothing to add here. I like the AeroZ feel. YES -
The gentlemen have hit the main points here. Right now this is a great idea, but the production is pretty crowded, and overall this is a bit too much of a cover. I think you can take your ideas further in this and really add some interpretation/solos to keep things varied. Like it, but it needs work. NO (resubmit)

*NO* Heroes of Might and Magic 2 'Sandro's Skull Pile'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I felt the first minute and a half followed the source very closely, in both style and structure. When things do pick up, you're still sticking close to the original, although there's more stylistic expansion. Overall I think you can add a lot more interpretation to this overall, and add more of your own touch. The sounds overall are pretty decent to good, but as Andrew mentioned, there are times when the balance isn't as solid as it could be. For example, the backing piano gets a little clunky at the 2:25 section when it's hitting chords, and the backing elements are buried as a result. I think if you can add more interpretation as the bigger element that needs fixing, and tweak some of your levels, you'll have something going here. NO (resubmit) -
OCR03804 - *YES* Seiken Densetsu 3 "Mother of Turmoil"
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Something about the opening notes feels kind of awkward to me, but once other instruments come in, I love the sequencing. I can't help but agree with Andrew that overall while this stays close melodically to the source, there is a ton of expansion and embellishment that really adds a lot of epic feel to the original. Looking forward to more subs from you, hope you add some more of your own touch, too! YES -
Going to mostly agree with Andrew here. I like how you've treated the source, and it was pretty fun to hear all the quotes from other games you threw in there (I'm sure I missed a few, too). Everything goes pretty well together, and this isn't an easy source to take on. Some nitpicks - aside from some tweaks in the levels, I think you could also look at your ending; not digging the fade-out. Neither are really vote-changing, but something to look into for the future. YES

*NO* Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 'Hyrule Fields'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Going to agree with the gentlemen above. The transitions are overall just not cutting it, which is a shame, as this has some great moments to it. I'm going to disagree with Halc and say that while the track has some coverish moments, the style and backing add a lot of differences. I'd love to see this get posted with some work on those transitions. NO (please resubmit) -
*NO* Final Fantasy 'Requiem for a Dying World' *RESUB*
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Still feeling overall that the song is going on for a few more variations than are necessary, but the cleaner production really helps this along. YES -

Hi there, This remix was created for Lucid Dreaming, the 'NIGHTS into Dream' project directed by the one and only Level 99,9. It's an arrangement of 'The Dragon Gave a Loud Scream', mixing oriental instruments with orchestral and electronic elements. Every remixer was strongly encouraged to reference a short 6-notes melody, which served as the main hook for the project. So I've included that as well, doing so as unintrusively and naturally as my ability permitted. ReMixer name: Dj Mokram userid: 28433 Game arranged: NIGHTS into Dreams Song arranged: The Dragon Gave a Loud Scream Arrangement name: The Desert Had a Strange Dream Source link: Original Composer: Naofumi Hataya System: Sega Saturn Comment: I'm a big fan of some in-house composers at Sega, namely Fumie Kumatani, Hideaki Kobayashi, Kenichi Tokoi and Naofumi Hataya. Lucid Dreaming is a project I'd wanted to join, but didn't think I had what it took to either be a part of it, or honor the composer(s). When the source re-opened very late in the project lifespan, I quickly expressed my interest in tackling it. I wanted to take the song as far away as possible, and noticed that the verse's melody had kind of an oriental feel to it. Immediately, I thought of using instruments from the anatolian folklore. Dumbeks, darbukas and tablas for percussion. Zurna, baglama and kanun for strings. Added a layer of indian folk with some tremolo sitars coupled to a bar violin and a sarangi for good measure. Then, I introduced a contrasting asian flavor with some ehru and doubled kotos, playing for a bit with the NIGHTS hook. Later on, I included some orchestral and electronic elements, such as gregorian choirs, a 5-strings lakland bassline and some synthetic drums to complement the piece and make for a more interesting/varied listen. Thanks to the feedback and encouragements from Stevo, DiGi and others, I managed to find confidence in myself to deliver this little arrangement. I had a blast rising up to the challenge of creating this unorthodox piece, and incidentally, this ended up being my fastest turnout for a completed remix. Lastly, it's worth mentioning that the final mastering for my track was handled by Stevo (as part of the album's finalization process). Props to him for being very patient and understanding about my disability. Lucid Dreaming has been released for a while, and so far no one has called me mean names for butchering the source. Therefore, I'm hoping you'll be able to get some enjoyment out of this remix too. Thank you for your time.

Greetings once again OCR! ReMixer name: DarkSim email: darksimmusic@gmail.com forum link: http://ocremix.org/forums/member.php?u=33879 Game arranged: Donkey Kong Country Arrangement name: Melting Point Arrangement link: Song arranged: Fear Factory Source: Composer: David Wise This time I've decided to tackle one of my favourite songs from one of the most iconic soundtracks in VGM, and this is a source that stands out amongst a truly outstanding soundtrack. I actually put this source onto a compilation tape of VGM originals and remixes I used to have in my car years ago, and I've always wanted to give it that power and energy that it deserves. I've gone for a drum 'n' bass flavour with orchestral elements, sort of similar to Nutritious' inspirational track "The Unbroken". Thanks go to Neblix, for his drumkit http://ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=33338 which I used as a basis for mine.

wo1fwood Nikolas Allen nikolas.jeleniauskas@gmail.com www.jelenasmusic.com Submission Information Game Title: Battletoads Title of Song: 2.1 mJ Boot Pieces Referenced: Rat Race Other Info: Developed by Rare, published by Tradewest in 1991 on the NES, Composer David Wise (couldn't find any additional composers) Here are the tracks for Battletoads in order of levels as they progress in the game. I've attached the nsf file as well. Title Theme Ragnarok's Canyon Boss Battle Stage Clear Cut Scenes Wookie Hole Turbo Tunnel Parts 1 + 2 Game Over Arctic Cavern Surf City Karnath's Lair Volkmire's Inferno Parts 1 + 2 Intruder Excluder Terra Tubes Rat Race Clinger Winger The Revolution The Armageddon (not used in the actual game) Notes on the Piece: Well I should first mention that this is my first remix ever, and was a fairly strange and unfamiliar task for me as I come from a contemporary classical background. I've had so much fun browsing ocremix for over a year or two now, and I felt that maybe it was time that I attempted one myself. The difficult part was adapting my own stylistic choices to fit a more popular idiom, but surprisingly I think what resulted works fairly well. The title is a obfuscated reference to the fact that you are kicking a stick of dynamite in order to advance during the stage, and 2.1 mJ is the approximate energy value in one stick. In writing the piece I started with the middle as I wanted something that resembled a strong pulsating section (using the main bass line), then worked backwards, and then jumped into sections 3 + 4, and got very, very stuck in the fourth. The opening was really constructed out of the perceptual idea that you were in the position of the protagonists and slowly approaching the Rat Race, hearing the preamble to the raucous that would proceed soon afterwards. The last part, well, I'll say the end was a funny realization that the theme worked really well in that instrumentation, so I wanted to use it somehow, but had to still manage the overall electronic ideas going around and balance them accordingly. It wasn't the easiest of times to try to figure out these ideas, but it took a good month to figure out how to proceed out of what I thought was an overall solid idea, and into finishing it properly. So periodic work within 3-4 months, and I finally finished it, and I think it turned out ok. There are some conceptual issues that I think might hinder it, or perhaps get in the way of normal production values, but blame that on my general predilection for complexity. Anyway I hope you enjoy this as much as I had playing around with it! ------------------------

Hi ocremix judges. I finished working on a DKC2 song, and the info is down below. Contact Information: Remixer Name: Chris | Amaterasu Real Name: Chris Woo Email: cwoo8888@hotmail.com Website: http://www.youtube.com/user/8Amaterasu8?feature=mhee User ID: 35078 Submission Information: Game: Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest Name of Arrangement: Quiescent Reeds Name of Song Arranged: Bayou Boogie Link to Original: Comments: This is my 3rd remix completed ever, and whilst I don't have that much experience I tried to use all the things I had learnt thus far, even though everything took me ages. It was awesome fun though =) The inspiration for this stemmed from procrastination during my preparation for some big medical exams that I had to sit. And the main focus of this remix was to create an interesting/relaxing soundscape where the different elements from both electric and acoustic sources were interwoven throughout the mix. I relied on experience in chamber music to attempt this balance. I recorded a few instruments for this remix which included: Acoustic Guitar : Washburn d10s Electric: Ibanez SA260 Bass: Yamaha 374 My trusy violin =) Thanks for your time, Chris Woo (Chris | Amaterasu)

Neblix Nabeel Ansari http://neblixmusic.wordpress.com Userid: 24123 Arrangement Title: Blackout Tower Games: Megaman 9 and 1 (if accepted put it in as a Megaman 9 remix.) Sources: Plug Man (MM9) Elec Man (MM1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns0NSzqnjvA This was my Round 4 (semi finals) remix for the Proto Man bracket of the Grand Robot Master Remix Battle 2011. My opponent was Willrock, his robot master was Elec Man, and mine was Plug Man. This was the first of the OCR Megaman tournaments where I got past the second round, so I was pretty happy to not only do that, but defeat my Round 3 opponent as well. All of my remixes of Rounds 1-3 were done (or mostly done) the Friday before they were due, so they were all pretty rushed and was surprised I got so far. I've been trying to get a Pendulum drum sound for a while and by Round 2 I think I found the perfect drum samples to help me out with that. I used em in all the rounds after wards. I like DnB music and my DnB sound is inspired heavily by Pendulum's "Immersion" album. Other than the sound, rhythm was taught to me by Shariq and electronic drum mixing/hit balancing I learned from Zircon's music (and his Phat Beats 101 YouTube tutorial, very good information). When I found out I was gonna be fighting WillRock, I groaned. I don't really like Elec Man: it's happy, it's short, and it's got 80s written ALL OVER IT (I think you guys know what I mean by that). I didn't even like my own robot master (Plug Man). I would much rather have picked someone like Flash Man or Tornado Man, though they were already picked in the last GRMRB and I didn't want to be the one who picks the popular tunes again. So yeah. Putting this as a Megaman 9 remix because 1.) Plug Man is my robot master and 2.) OCR doesn't have enough MM9 remixes. I remembered to myself that anything that's happy can be made sad or dark by simply transposing it, so that's exactly what I did. The dubstep breakdown is sort of inspired by a dubstep remix Zircon showed a couple weeks back, and I figured since dubstep is the trendy thing nowadays I'd try my hand at it. I mixed DnB and dubstep (as seen before in bLiNd's Blue Skies mix) and got a dirty, powerful, and apocalyptic piece of high energy in-your-face megaman music. I didn't beat Will unfortunately, because the crowd favors happier music but I'm pretty happy in general that I got to the semi finals and that going against Will I lost by ONLY 5 votes out of 33. Synths were Zebra2 and Image-Line's FL synth Harmless. ALL OF THEM. (and some Kontakt 4 which I acquired back in November, so NOW I HAVE SAMPLES ) The drums are slices with layered amen break slices and compression/EQ. Enjoy! It's a bit conservative, but if there's one thing I know, it's that interpretation is a good substitute for purely original sections and I interpreted Elec and Plug Man a hell of a lot here (oh and there's a synth solo).

Title: The Last Story Game: Final Fantasy Song: Ending Original Composer: Nobuo Uematsu Remixer: Knight_of_the_Round, Brandon Strader Real name: Justin Taylor PROJECT TRACK! Justin: This "Ending" theme remix was a very last minute thing for me. Brandon asked if I could crank it out in a week, so the next day I sat down and wrote the original arrangement in about 5 hours. After a few adjustments, and the addition of vocals (which I was against at first, but I'm glad I gave in to Brandon's request!), "Ending" theme was done. This song was a little easier to remix, given the fact that the source for this track is 0:54 seconds, and split into 3 parts. Brandon: Yeah, yeah... I did some gratuitous metal vocals. I'm sorry, everyone. They sound pretty awesome though, I think. The lyrics are, again, written somewhat jokingly. The heroes save the world, and then cursed by evil power from deep within the land, go on a brain-eating zombie rampage. And because they're like level 70 at the time, nobody can withstand their brutal onslaught. I asked Justin if we could name this The Last Story in tribute to Mistwalker's new game, which recently sold out in Japan. I've heard it's like the start of Final Fantasy all over again under a new name. If that's the case, it is only fitting that we should pay tribute to that as well with this title. A huge thanks to Justin for making this song and letting me put my metal vocals on it, which will easily turn many OCR listeners away! They're my strongest metal vocal performance to date. ------------------------------------

Note: This is a project remix from Brandon Straders FF 1 project!! Contact Information The Dual Dragons (feat. Brandon Strader on Bass guitar) Dan Johansen, Frank Johansen & Brandon Strader www.thedualdragons.com 5187 Submission Information Final Fantasy I The Beginning Of A Legacy Battle Scene We approached this tune with fresh minds, trying to step away from the cliche take on battle tracks.. leaning more towards eerie prog metal vibes. Building danger throughout the battle instead of introducing a threat as constantly staying on the same level. Here the battle starts off very focused, trying to control everything then every thing goes out of hand (due to party members dying.. Enemies having secret trump cards etc.) Anyways, enjoy! -------------------
