  1. Folksy and definitely interpretive to my ears. Well done. I felt it was a bit slow at first, but I was just moving a faster mental pace with my work before listening. Once I got situated, it was all good.
  2. They just opened with a really great rendition of the SMB theme. Listening to see if the performances throughout the show will all be game inspired. Haven't heard their name yet. Anyone know?
  3. Straightforward and delicious. The negative space is super well woven. Great listen.
  4. Seems like some of this response thread got into a level of detail that can get mired rather quickly in subjectivity. There are plenty of professionally recorded/mixed/mastered albums, scores, suites, tracks, etc that have been created over the past 50 years that are lauded, praised, and respected for their overall stunning execution...and they have flaws. Noticeable flaws. Things that almost jump out when played back through a decent system in a dedicated environment. But as music is a subjective and personal experience, so shall be the critiques. And from a logical standpoint, they are all equal since they are in there very nature, opinions. We put our music out here for others to digest. If someone comments on your work and says "This isn't very good", that doesn't actually mean it isn't very good. That's just their opinion. Well-guided, educated, and experienced perhaps...but still an opinion. As well, a true virtuoso who knows the nature of their craft will almost always comment that they are learning, experimenting, improving... Crulex, agreed. If you dig it, you dig it. I get the crits, but all in all, I dig it. Well done RoeTaKa.
  5. Loved this track through the workshop, love it here. A proper WBG song. I'm keeping it on repeat while grinding away at some game design. Kudos!
  6. The Star Light Zone theme might be my favorite truly "gamey" game melody/counterpoint of all time. I've always found it to be very uplifting and playful as well (though I agree, some of the semiotic effect comes from the cathartic release after Labyrinth). Game music comes in many shapes and sizes, but "game" music as opposed to VG OSTs is, to me, a very specific flavor of music. Rexy, you knocked it out of the park. You put your own touch on the song, maintained the original feel throughout, and didn't try to obliterate it with excessive effects or instrumentation. My kind of jam. Kudos!
  7. That's what I get for replying at 6-something in the morning. Sorry! Thank you again though. No, it's great to get the feedback. I truly appreciate it. I'll be on the guitars this week and then start a full mixing session. Hopefully a new WIP will be up soon.
  8. (Goomba, doh) Gercr!, thank ya! I'll definitely be highlighting the piano more as the track develops. Also, the guitar will be in there soon (as soon as I can get a free day to record it!) There is a fully written and developed bass line, but it might be buried in the mix too much at this point. I'll remember to bring it out more once all instruments are there. Right. There is a section ( second B, 2:44 - 3:18 ) where the rhythm changes to something more like, an acoustic breakbeat. I changed things up here intentionally to add variety. The tempo is gradually shifting over that time range. I know it is a bit of a strange feeling idea, but it is something I wanted to try. Is this the area you mentioned?
  9. Thank you Rozovian for your thoughts and insight. I appreciate the specific critiques! This is still coming together, but I feel like the parts are nearly there. I'll get the delays squared during mixing and once the ac. guitar is actually recorded (just pieces of midi in there now; rhythm will play with the clave beat and accentuate the root while some lead work will add some peppy accents to the B sections) hopefully it will gel well with the overall tune. Regarding your point about the usage of the source melody and the piano lead. I am ultimately going for something that is close to a montunos, but was trying to pull that off one-handed. I'll start building on it and writing out the rhythm hand to get that fuller spectrum piano texture. I think the turnarounds work pretty well and while you're right, it is tough to get the source to mesh well with that salsa rhythm of the usually-off-clave bass line and create the appropriate harmony, I feel like it's getting there. Salsa pianists tend to play more aggressively with a certain 'punch' to their key work (compared to other jazz or classical players who can generally be more dynamic) and I want to replicate that in this piano performance as well. However, while it is supposed to be a more chill-vibed track, I definitely don't want to conjure up thoughts of elevator music! It's a fine line, but I am determined to make this work!
  10. This is utterly tight. Excellent ax work and the Doubler/Harmonizer/double tracking is nice and thick. The only two things that jump out to me right away, and I don't know the source material so others will have to comment on that, is the repetition in the kick and snare runs and the dynamics. The k/s work, but they plod along a bit as well. Some variance in the arrangement of those two throughout the piece would relax the tension there, make things feel more loose. This isn't so much a critique of humanization either, just the actual patterns could use some variation. Regarding the dynamics, the track is tight and moves well, but the energy level is fairly similar throughout. The guitar arrangement is stellar! It's just that the overall dynamics are pretty mild. I know this is more foregone in metal then in other genres, but there is definitely a bit of room to allow the mix to breathe. Awesome work man!
  11. My "proof of concept" (initial thoughts, likes/dislikes) posting to the workshop. The track is intended to be a lament, but with a positive encouraging feeling overall. Bombastic, gritty, resonating, trudging... those are some of the ideas that I am going for. It's how I felt when first walking through those moody Zanarkand ruins... loved how they omitted the battle music in this area and kept the theme rolling through all fights/menus/etc. It really drove the emotion home I think. Anyway... Still rough. This is outline and core arrangement though. I have plenty of recording to do. All guitars (bass, elec., acous.) will be performed instead of the current MIDI synths. Looking for any feedback on the overall vibe, ambiance, and soundscape. Cheers! Source: Someday the Dream Will End (some other snippets are dotted in there from other tracks) Remix: WIP 1
  12. So this went up through the JP and got mixed reviews, so I've revamped the worked considerably and now want to work on it alongside of any input the Workshop can offer. The track is intended to be an island/salsa/easy listening jam. There are some elements of tango in there as well. This is still rough of course. I feel like I have a solid foundation down. There will be acoustic guitar worked in as the final instrumentation is completed. Mixing has only been done to the extent of making things generally sit in the mix. Nothing creative yet. Nonetheless I thought, "It's ready for the workshop!" I'd love to get some feedback on direction, overall feel, and if anyone is diggin' the concept thus far. All criticism is totally welcome. 13. Aaah...the guitar threw me off a bit at first, and the finger snaps caught me, somehow, strangely in a part or two, but this is a chill track. Great interpretaion.
  14. The sources blend so smoothly in this mix. And all on a single instrument allowing for natural, ultra-solo representations of the themes. Minimalistic but dynamic, true to the source, and honest about what it is. My kind of remix...heck, my kind of song in general. Kudos!
  15. Awesome. Clean, engaging, and an enjoyable listen all of the way through. *repeat on*
  16. I think this is a great remix. It's not overly intricate, it doesn't dive too deep in the mix, and the instrumentation is fairly straightforward, but it fills that need for a emotionally placid track. It serves the source well too. And I have to say, I think the length is just right. Could be longer sure, but I don't think that would necessarily add to the quality of the track.
  17. Oh, awesome. Thank you sir for the update. I look forward to the full-on functionality, but for now, this is a huge plus!
  18. I like it. I love it. And I think I want some more of it.
  19. Just out of curiosity, has it been discussed or have the site overlords ever discussed a revised search functionality that would allow visitors/users to find remixes or artists based on tags such as genre, instrumentation, key/time signatures, affective descriptors, etc...? I know the database of remixes/remixers is fairly large, but it still seems to be in the plausible range for creating and populating some fields to make this possible. Cheers all.
  20. I thoroughly enjoyed this piece. Listened to it several times through now and it is definitely graceful and definitely stylish. It's like a mental stroll through Hyrule as if one was looking for a nice cafe in town and then took their flat white to the woods for some Thoreau-esque ponderings... And now that I look, I think younger portraits of the guy resemble (in small part) at least a few of Kokiri's inhabitants. Eh, anyway, well done Markus!
  21. Emunator, wow man. What a smooth remix of an already chill piece. The counterpoint is spot on. That really made the piece for me. This should be an immediate shoe-in I imagine. Wanted more!
  22. A great piece of traveling music. This one has always been an enjoyable listen. The drums are a bit on the static side, and some of the samples are a bit muddy, but it really doesn't take away from the overall composition.
  23. All of jdaster's work is great. Keep it up sir! Gives me a Japanese-village-stroll-feel. Maybe Hisaishi?
