  1. "Probably" is not an outright admission that Vista is an OSX knockoff, but you'd have to be blind not to admit that Vista took a LOT from MacOS. But, in a few ways, I'm glad they did. What Vista ripped off (or borrowed, or whatever you want to call it) from Mac OS were things that were nice to have, but not important enough to make me switch over (stuff like visual style, the search bar, the widgets, the chess game, etc). Sure, if I switched over to OSX in the XP era I would gain those things, but I would also lose the ability to use many of my favorite applications and games in Windows, which is pretty much priority #1 when I'm choosing an OS. Sure, there are workarounds and knockoffs of those programs, but they're generally worse or more complicated than their Windows originals, which pretty much negates the OS advantage for me. Don't get me wrong, Mac has a lot of GREAT apps, just none that I will ever realistically have a use for. Steam and ePSXe, however, are a different story. Also, I think I've stated the other reasons that I don't like the OS (no, the mouse isn't one of them). Vista, however, is compatible with many (if not all now) of the applications and games that I use regularly (and like) along with some Mac knockoff features, removes any advantage of switching. Especially since I already have the appropriate hardware. One note, though: aside from the nice visuals, the other "mac" ripoff features are ones that I never even use. So far I don't see a point in sidebar widgets (though I do like the concept of grouping them into a sidebar), and I've only used the search box are because it replaces the Run dialog. This is probably because I've been a Windows guy for too long, though.
  2. Yep, iTunes works flawlessly. I prefer WMP11, but I use iTunes occasionally because I have some music that won't play in anything else.
  3. Probably, but it still has that lovely feature of having all the other software I (and many other people) actually give a shit about. I'm not a musician and I don't make movies, but I am a bit of a gamer. And as far as other apps and utilities go, I prefer the "real deal" over knockoffs, but I have to give credit to MacOS for actually having many good alternatives. Unfortunately, that's more than I can say for *nix. Plus, I'm not a huge fan of Mac OS. It's a little too smooth, I don't like how the menus and windows are arranged, and the dock doesn't really work for me as a shortcut bar. I much prefer Windows' combo of quicklaunch and start menu or Gnome's menu interface. Bullshit. There is absolutely nothing monitoring you unless you use the parental controls. In fact, let me give you a screenshot of my RAM readout. Hell, I'll even turn on Windows Sidebar, and I don't even usually run that: And the rest: One note: pretty much everything on that list that begins with "eh" (or e-home) are related to Media Center, which I am running so I can listen to the news in the background. So, which one of those is the one that monitors my personal information? Google each one of those. If you find it, I will paypal you five dollars. This is ~600mb of my 1gb being used, with Media Center, Internet Explorer, Sidebar, CCC, etc. running. Despite this, I don't really have many speed problems, and my games run nearly as well as in XP (especially now). IE7 has a phishing filter. Does that help? Anyhow, it's no secret that so far I've been pretty well impressed with Vista, especially since several of the problems I have had with it have been solved (the biggest of which being OpenGL). I still have some annoyances, but overall I would recommend Home Premium to anyone who wants a smoother, better looking OS than XP but still wants at least 97% of their favorite programs (and 100% of their media) to work. Plus, if you're a TV guy, Media Center is probably the best PVR software I've used so far. If you just want DX10, wait a couple years and pick up Home Basic. Doesn't look as pretty, but it's still cleaned up considerably and will work pretty smoothly on fairly low-end computers. I don't think you'll get the neat 3d chess game, though. To be honest, if it wasn't free, I wouldn't switch over to Vista. I'd stick with XP, possibly with a new desktop theme just to keep it fresh. However, since it was free, I would say the switch has been an interesting experiment, and one that has paid off.
  4. Cool, glad the posts are appreciated. Edit: Oh, since you brought it up earlier: I don't see where there would be any extra problems. Vista does install a bootloader that will allow you to choose which OS to boot (like XP does, I think), but otherwise I don't see where there would be any extra problems. At least, any more than there would be in XP. There, I addressed one of your concerns. Plz to be putting Mr. Madface away.
  5. Cool, glad the posts are appreciated. It seems that the Nvidia drivers haven't been updated since the fifth, so Nvidia users may still have major OpenGL problems. Yeah, I figured it was more like a faster form of virtual memory than actual RAM. I was just using a term that one of the books I looked at yesterday used. Still, this trick is working pretty well with my lappy, which I don't game very much on (and if I do, it's usually old stuff anyway). I just won't have much use for it on my desktop. In fact, the book I read pretty much stated that systems with 1 gig of ram or more won't benefit from this enhancement. Edit: Looks like the AC'97 drivers have been updated, but they're still unstable for me. Like before, everything works but I keep getting RunDLL32 error messages whenever I adjust the sound settings.
  6. Okay, looks like the OpenGL troubles are mostly over, at least on the ATI end. I just tried a couple games, and the only one I had trouble with was ePSXe with the OGL2 plugin. Hooray new drivers etc. Also, that flash drive RAM trick causes all kinds of lag in games, so that's pretty much a no go. It's good for my laptop, though, and great if you don't do any heavy gaming.
  7. Haha, that's pretty awesome. I always liked your stuff. Anyhow, I like Ubunto and, to a lesser extent, Mandriva. Debian was fun for a while, though.
  8. Yeah, it's pretty much no secret that games run worse in Vista, at least at the moment. I want to see how everything runs when non-beta ATI drivers come out. Edit: Oh snapdragons, they're out today! GJGJGJGJGJGJ Also, for a bit of experimentation, I'm installing Home Basic on my laptop. Celeron M 1.4ghz, 512 RAM, intel integrated shitgrafx, and 40-gig hard drive. It needed a format anyway, so we'll see how well it runs. Plus, I'd really like to use the Flash Drive => RAM feature on it. I'll let you know how that turns out.
  9. Update: all my music still works fine. All 7 gigs of it <3 Also, spare flash drives can be mounted as extra RAM.
  10. The only reason I would ever consider doing that is because I honestly think GNOME is the best OS interface I've ever used. Everything else surrounding Linux is pretty much useless to me, though.
  11. Yeah, I've definitely had my share of fun with InkBall. And Mahjonng too, come to think of it. We need some of those old Entertainment Pack games, though.
  12. That would make sense. I've used XP Pro, but only through slipstreamed discs, and I think they defaulted to MSHOME. Hmm. Vista does have some compatibility with XP drivers, though. For example, I'm using the XP driver for a printer that's on the network. The only XP driver I haven't gotten working is the one for my Radioshack PS2-USB gamepad adapter, but I don't really need the driver at all unless I want rumble (which I don't for the most part). Plus, I think the Vista Upgrade Advisor can tell you whether or not a device you have is compatible. PS - what are your specs? Edit: Here's a desktop screenshot, linked to prevent page-stretching. Later on I'll provide screenshots of some other stuff if you guys want.
  13. I just checked the size of my Windows folder. 8.5 gigs. Yeowch! Maybe I'll get rid of a few of these features I don't use. Also, I'll note my specs: Athlon 64 2800+, Radeon X1600 Pro card, 1gig ram. One thing: I wouldn't really recommend Ultimate to anybody. It has a lot of stuff that the average gamer will never use. I'd recommend Home Premium for the visual fanciness and Media Center, but if you don't care about either then Basic will work just fine I suppose.
  14. If you're not an idiot, you don't need an anti-virus program in XP. I certainly never did, and I'm only classified as an idiot in three continental united states. Anyhow, I've been using Vista Ultimate for a few weeks now, along with IE7 and WMP11. I've had a few problems so far, but for the most part I'm enjoying it. As I said in another thread, it's nothing I'd pay non-monopoly money for. First, my problems so far. None of the OpenGL games I play work. HL1, ePSXe w/ ogl2, etc. I think Doom 3 and Quake 4 work, but verrry slowly. This is because Microsoft isn't supporting OpenGL anymore, except ver. 1.4 (and that works through a wrapper that translates to D3D calls, so it's really slow). Essentially, it's now up to graphics card manufacturers to create OpenGL ICDs, which will allow the games to run at full speed. I can't say I blame Microsoft for not wanting to support a competing standard (in their own product, no less), but it's still a pain in the ass right now. It's the main reason I haven't completely ditched my XP partition. ATI doesn't have an ICD yet, and I don't even know about Nvidia. Edit: For those of you just joining us, ATI has released their latest drivers and OpenGL support has improved greatly. Many games work full or near-full speed, though there are problems with ePSXe. As for Direct3D games, they work just great. CS:S works just as well as in XP. It is a bit slower if you're running Aero Glass, but on your more hardware-taxing games all you have to do is right-click on the shortcut, properties, compatibility, and select "disable visual themes" and "disable desktop composition". Easy enough. And often it will automatically shut off if you're running something that's really taxing your system. Now, I play a lot of music on my computer. I recently switched over to using Windows Media Player 11 (from Winamp, and good riddance for the most part), and it plays my entire MP3 collection perfectly well. The content protection doesn't really take effect until around 2011 afaik, and by then you'll likely have compatible hardware. It might be a pain to no longer play my MP3 collection, but I'm not really one to complain about having my illegally copied music taken away. Boo-hoo. One note for people with AC'97 onboard sound: Vista's included driver blows ass. The ones from the Realtek site work very well, but you might get some RunDLL32 errors when you go to adjust your settings. It's nothing more than a minor annoyance, since the messages are easily closed and don't cause any real problems. Video drivers. I have a Radeon X1600 Pro, and in XP I used the Omega Drivers with ATI Tray Tools, and all was beautiful with the world. There are no Omega drivers for vista, and ATI Tray Tools gives me a memory leak, so I'm forced to use the Catalyst Control Center. The ATI Vista Beta drivers haven't been updated since December 13th. They also install the Visual C++ Redistributable for some reason. I'll say it now: the interface is wonderful. It looks and feels great, and everything is easily accessible. As far as the start menu goes, I like the search box and the ability to scroll through the programs menu (instead of it taking up the entire screen if you have a shitload of programs installed, and you no longer really have to organize it manually). I'm not a huge fan of the new documents folder structure, but that's because I'm used to the way it worked before. It will be nice to have my documents completely separate from the pictures/videos etc. folders. Windows Explorer isn't really any better or worse. Now, someone mentioned networking, and said it was a pain in the ass. Well, not in my experience. I've had to transfer some files to/from my XP laptop, and the only problems I ever had were on the laptop. One thing to note: vista defaults to using WORKGROUP as the network name, instead of MSHOME, which may confuse some. But I'd say the networking is the biggest improvement over XP so far, and I have no idea what kind of problems you might have with it. Also, I really like the new Media Center. They added a few things, such as the ability to play all the Windows Games (solitaire, spider solitaire, hearts, mahjongg, chess etc.) from a remote. There's also a lot of online content available to make up for the lack of Video-On-Demand support (to my knowledge), so you can get stuff from Comedy Central Motherload, Yahoo, NPR, and a few others without leaving the chair. For people who don't use their computer as a PVR, though, this is probably useless to you. Let's see... speech recognition works well, but it's profoundly useless to anyone who can type faster than 10wpm. That's all I can think of now, so I'm ready to answer any questions.
  15. According to the forum index, today is KyleJCrb's 21st birthday. He's likely getting wasted right now.
  16. Could you give me a link? I'm a bit confused by the search results.
  17. I bought the latest one, but that was more for Timbaland than Nelly herself. Also, news flash: samples aren't new in the world of hip-hop and pop production, and if Timbo really did sample the song it's just a background melody on the track anyway, so it detracts very little from the quality of the song. As I understand it, unlike many producers Timbo has been mostly unreliant on samples in his career anyhow. Samples or no, Timbaland's still one of the top producers in the industry.
  18. I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition and Vista Ultimate, and it's the same problem with both. I like having my old 27-inch TV attached to my computer in clone mode with my 17" Dell CRT. The problem is, whenever I turn clone mode on, the resolution and refresh rate of my monitor is restricted to 1024x768 at 60hz (I like to keep it at 1152x864 at 75). My card is a Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro. On XP MCE I'm using the unofficial Omega drivers combined with ATI Tray Tools, and on Vista I'm using the official Catalyst driver set. The problem occurs in both. Now, before I did the last format + repartition, it was set up perfectly on XP MCE with the omega drivers. It would let me use whatever resolution I wanted on my main monitor, and the output on the TV would still show it. When I used resolutions higher than 1024x768, the image on the screen would scroll around depending on where my mouse cursor was, which was cool. And when I wanted to use the media center or play on an emulator (which I like doing through the TV), it would allow me to switch to 720x480, it would work just fine, then I'd go back to my preferred resolution with no trouble whatsoever. After I formatted, though, I could never get it to do that again. Instead it will restrict me to 1024x768 and each time I want to use the TV I have to load Catalyst Control center (which takes way longer than it should, btw) and manually enable and disable the TV, set the resolutions, etc. This probably isn't important, but I'll mention anyway: the monitor is connected through VGA and the TV is using an S-video to composite adapter. Any help would be appreciated, and I'll elaborate on any details you need.
  19. And, as I said, there's nothing Unmod did well that can't be done just as well in the moderated forums. Seriously, what are we really going to lose other than the name? "lol I just posted tubgirl in this thread bask in my hilarity"? And besides, who is really that dependent on Unmod for entertainment/advice anyway? That's just disturbing.
  20. There was nothing unmod did good that can't be done in a moderated forum, such as offtopic. Sex-ed, aimms, what have you. The rest was either total shit or pornhentaistuffs that really don't belong on a site that's focused on videogame remixes. When you need that stuff, there's always _chan. As for the new forums, I'm a total whore for features but it is a bit cluttered. Nothing I can't get used to, though. I guess the bannings are a bit unfortunate, though.
  21. Possibly. But I dont' know who you are so I can't betray someone I don't know Also if my more homoerotic sigs are not allowed in the moderated forums, I am out of here in less time than the average unmodder spends in a woman's vagina.
  22. I'm fully behind every decision that has been made so far. Keep up the good work, mods!
  23. Excellent song. I'm a total sucker for smooth bass, and this song delivers. Good job once again, DJP. For reference, here's the Coors commercial that this song was based on, YouTube'd:
