  1. Should there be a wip playground for people who REALLY don't know how to mix?

As the site will get more and more members, gathers more newcomers & aspiring remixers, it will inevitably get harder for dedicated WIP reviewers to focus on being fair & helpful.

Because there'll be a flood of low & average quality work in this section, and so little real talent to come out of the crowd.

That's the ransom of the success, even though being popular here rarely brings any kind of financial compensation...

But after all, why should we ask for any? We're all here out of passion, and in an eternal quest to better ourselves at understanding each other throught a creative art process.

And maybe in the course of the events, we'll join effort in the making of a better place for you and for me, and the entire human race...

It's not a RIGHT to be a musician or remixer D:

    Got that right! :-D

But while I consider myself swimming in the low & average part of the pool, I still won't give up on making some 'fantasticular' music someday!

...and maybe even get paid for it, if I'm lucky.

  2. the next time you start a remix, to take a videocast of the whole thing. From drawing in notes to copying in other things, and then record some narration over the process.

Do you have any idea how long making a song takes?

I don't think it would be very practical (nor fun) to watch someone working on an entire piece.

Even if breaked in chapters...that would be a lot of stuff, and imply a lot of organization on the recording too.

It sounds difficult to cover every nook and crany in specific video tutorials, dunno if that's what you're going for Zephyr...

What would be useful for everyone, would be to simply categorize the requests, like 'beginner', 'advanced', etc., and then add the tags to the video.

I'm not using FL fyi, but I can appreciate the effort Zeph is making here.

I know it's kind of easier to get it when watching a video with clear visual demonstration, than when reading 10 pages of detailed technical explanations.

So I hope his tutorials help as many people as possible. Cheers!

  3. Hey Bundeslang, your disguised youtube link didn't worked for me, as it isn't really a youtube link.

Anyway, here one in case other people have the same problem with the truveo thing:

    .

Won't be able to enter cause my DAW is dead (until june I'm afraid), but I will be voting as usual.

Hope to see some fierce competition like the last round! ;-)

oh, and I lol'd at your egoraptor reference in the topic title.

  4. It really is 5 minutes of greatness.

I was expecting guitar wankery here, and I wasn't disapointed.

It has kind of a Castlevania-esque feeling to it ...mixed with a bit of James Bond too.

Some instruments or textures sound a bit fake compared to other, so it's a bit irregular here and there.

But its an epic and well structured take on the source.

As I was reading through comments, I've noticed on page 1 that Protricity is banned... really?!.

I mean, I don't know the story, but it's too bad, as he's got talent.

    Anyway, nice 'Haunted Chase' remix.

  5. Will work for free. (I just love making music)

Basically, you're pointing to the fact that you put absolutely no value in your own work.

Which is not the most appropriate way to appeal to recruiters to say the least.

And simply not the way the real world works.

To make a parallel with a game, you're at square one.

Don't try to fight the last battle if you haven't proved you can at least hold a weapon.

That weapon is called: common sense.

Good luck in your musical projects.

  6. To me, the recording ends up being way faster than original.

But it only occurs when I've got like 15 VST tracks not yet rendered.

Whether the recording is in 16 or 24 bit doesn't make a difference sadly.

Neither does the latency tweaking and Asio driver.

Sometimes I even got some tempo change mid-song, and other strange time signatures artifacts.

This is indeed infuriating, so I opted for another wave editor, and since no more problems.

  7. The Museum Stage BGM from Rockman & Forte is a personal favorite.

As a matter of fact, I'm right in the middle of remixing it too...

Yet, I can't believe that to this day, this is the only remix from that game on OCR.

Anyway, nice introduction, I was unsuspecting till the beat started.

This arrangement is very true to the source, in the way that it follows the original melodic structure faithfully.

Yet the new textures and melodies add a lot to the mix.

I like how the new material blends-in at 2:45.

The arrangement enhances the song with faster tempo and punchy drum/synth sequence combo...

Its like a musical powerup when you think about it. ;-)

Somehow, it sounds more like some of the recent work on the serie, namely Rockman Exe or Rockman Zero.

All things considered, this is pretty decent remix, and I liked it.

  8. Allright! Time to support this joint!

June being Boss month, it will be a pretty auspicious time for making some more kick-ass boss remixes.

In the meantime, I made a provisory banner for anyone interested in supporting/advertising for the project.

The Joker approved the art so here we go:

    bdsprojban03.png

Don't forget to link it to the 'Badass' thread too! ;-)

  9. I remember this game as one of my favorite shmup for the snes, with R-type III, Area88 and Pop'n Twinbee.

The remix totally contrasts with the fast paced original.

Certainly wasn't expecting that take on the source, but its all for the better this way.

The laid back, jazzy atmosphere perfectly fits a city scenery at night.

I love how the groove is so subtle, with simple drums & bassline, but really have a life of its own.

The vibe is an obvious choice when considering the style, but is used so rarely in game remixes that this makes it pure genius.

    Very nice mix.

  10. Actually you really made it sound like Viklund's remixes, that's great!

The drum work is sick, and the synths & bass are really cool.

Only complain for me is that the EQ is a little strong on the High frequencies.

You should absolutely finish this as:

1-it is very nice atm, while a little short.

2-we need more Bionic Commando luv around here.

    Keep up the fine work!

  11. We are expecting this project to be done within October or December this year.

Knowing the release date now makes it more manageable for people who'll want to join.

Here are some questions to help you find musicians fitting your criteria:

-What level of quality are you expecting in the music production? Average, professional?

-Is there any pre-requisites to join the project?

-Other than the 6 specific tracks, do you need any main theme of some sort?

-Do you need something else, like music for a demo-trailer for exemple?

Hoping this helps you find all the composers you need. ;-)

  12. I'm wondering where it'll be better to post your midi...

In Requests, another person already did that and successfully found people to help him.

Or you could post in the Workshop 'remixes' if it's a remix, or in 'others' if it's not.

And basically ask for the people to help you give life to your track.

Ultimately, if none of the previous work (which I doubt) you can still contact a remixer whose work you like, and ask him/her personally.

    Hope this helps. ;-)

  13. Rig1015, for some reason that method just now seemed a little complicated... :dstrbd:

I think what some are trying to say, is that you will have to pass through this less-fun 'picking some gear & learning how to use it' phase.

At least if you really want to get to were you intended to go.

This is an unavoidable but necessary effort, but you'll be glad you've put some time in it later.

Whether or not you decide to give your midis to your friend so he can enhance them for you,

know that there are lots of people here on OCR up for collab and willing to help you getting started.

So if you really want to start remixing, with whatever budget you have, then go for it.

The only thing that really matter is the desire to put your thoughts in motion, to create, and having fun while doing so. ;-)

  14. Not everyone wants to be productive like us ;-)

Luke, where are your MM4 wips? :)!!

Personally I've seen a decline in forum-usage, ESPECIALLY any forum related to music production and remixing.

It may come from the recent re-arrangement of the forums...

But concerning the Remixing forum, it's more or less due to the lack of proper organization in general (exept for FL studio), which might confuse a new user.

To other users, since they know more or less how to make music, they only look it up when in need of precise information on a specific matter.

Which lead me to think there may be a need/way to split the remixing forum in two: beginner and advanced.

Maybe the beginner part with tutorials & basic questions could be in the Newbie section.

While the advanced part & more specific thread (EQ, mastering, filters) could be in the Remixing (or advanced remixing for that matter).

Dunno, just throwing ideas here.

  15. I dunno if Capcom is planning an HD remix of Megaman2 (preferably NOT Powered-up this time).

But if they end-up making it, that's what the new Metal Man's stage BGM should sound like.

Because it is indeed a great re-invention of the theme.

The synth work is brillant, and really diversifies the mix. Luv the distorted guitars-synth.

I particularly like the breaks at around 1:45 and 2:48 when it quiets down,

and subtely re-build the tension before the dynamic rythmic parts make their come back.

There's also some nice background pad that add depth to the mix, making it an even more immersive experience.

While staying true to the essence of the original metalman, it amplifies the energy and vision of the theme.

    Overall great arrangement.

  16. UPDATE v4. Check the first post!

Basicaly trying to put down the song while fixing stuff wasn't the right approach.

So I decided to try and get the structure done first (intro-verse-bridge-break-etc).

Then when the whole map thing will be put down, I will concentrate on EQ & mastering.

    v4 Log:

-I tried to adress the latest issues mentioned, while mainly focusing on song structure.

-I totally suppressed the distorition fx on the guitar, that was causing the piercing sound.

-Extended track to 3:48, lenghtened the break, tweaked the last part

-Thanks to Gario I've discovered that my PC mixer was panned 1 bar left.

So everything I'd made so far had that flaw. I would have never noticed otherwise, so thx!

Any constructive feedback would be helpful, as usual! ;-)
