  1. Ok, I think structurally the song is done.
It will be A ton of work to eventually "finish" it. (The Drums are basically still just placeholder as is the bass for the first 2 minutes) But the basic foundation is there so I can move on to building the next song.
I like the ending a lot. (As I always love coming up with those little weird outro sections)
But if it seems too out of place let me know what you think.

  2. Yeah it's there mostly as a placeholder for now because I am intending to record all those lines with a real guitar (As the first section or so does use a real bass but my bass is so old and crappy that it just sounds bad so if you listen at 00:40 the real bass is actually switched out for a couple of DX7 patches so I could write the lines without having a guitar to record them with yet.
Once I get the new bass in the mail i'm going to try and record all the lines for that (And keep the switch at 2 minutes to the heavier synth bass). I might also keep the DX7 patch and try to get the timing between the real bass and the synth as close as possible and then process them on a bus as a single instrument just for the cool effect. But i'll wait and see how that goes after recording.
The drums are placeholder as well at the moment, I have some processing going on with that but it's all on a single track which doesn't sound good. I'm planning on doing what I have done in other songs which is to write a multi-channel MIDI file with each channel being routed to separate tracks and processed separately before being sent to a drum bus. So I can get a certain specific sound on one part and one on another. This is actually the first song i've worked on thus far where the drums are all from a single set/machine(And this particular one is basically just mono without the ability to adjust the panning for different drums) just because it was good enough while writing and gave the kind of vibe I was looking for before really building it out. (Every other song so far has had more complex work done on the percussion)

The mixing here is really basic too as i'm trying to get in the general ball park of what I want with all songs as I block them out and then once they are all done i'm going to go back and really try to tune the mixes up. I tend to get too lost easily in small details (And waste huge amounts of time)when i'm building a song and I have found for me it's beneficial to progress to only try and get the basics out of the way while i'm trying to build the overall song before really going into the details.

I appreciate the comments and I knew someone would notice the lack of low end as I have while i've been building it. (Which reinforces how i've felt about it too. It sounds kind of good but it's lacking the low end punch)

  3. Almost done blocking it out. Something cool, I managed to work in the original 2612 bass patch (x2)and with some processing it sounds really cool as an arpeggiated bass line.
I also bought a new short scale Bass that should be coming in the mail in a few weeks so i'll be able to get some actually good sounding bass recordings. So i'm looking forward to getting to play with that as I tried to write all the bass lines used here on the DX7 with a real bass in mind. I might create a layer of the two together maybe as well.

  4. Blocking more of Silent Zone out. Have to say this wasn't a direction I expected, but I really like it none the less.
It will be a lot more difficult to balance this one though. The mix isn't really there and there's a lot of placeholder stuff. (Like you'll notice I switched the real bass out for a synth one a few sections in. Just writing the parts. Also missing guitar rhythm lines) Plus I think i'll finally pick up a new bass. The first sections are recorded on a cheapo 200$ starter Ibanez that has a bunch of broken knobs and stuff i've had for 15+ years that sounds like shit and have never bothered to buy a better one. I'd like to ideally do all the bass with a real one for this to give that really funky late 70's/80s vibe.

  5. Got more blocked out. I had an issue with Arturia's plugins that would cause a massive memory leak and eventually crash my DAW, so the 2 main lead synths are entirely place holder for the time being until Arturia releases a new verison of the plugin in question sometime soon.(After contacting them. It's been reproduced and marked to be fixed).

I'm liking the structure so far although I had some apprehension about adding a power metal like variation into it (Which needs the increase in tempo). It seems like it's going to work so far but maybe i'll retool that part of the song. There are also some funky time signature changes that might sound weird in the later sections too. I might change that as well.
The solo line is very WIP as well.
I almost want to make a second Pantera like metal version with a faster tempo on it's own.
Also there are a few stuck notes here and there, because Synth1 is just a butthead.

  6. Things have gotten better recently thankfully with some small setbacks, but some parts vary day to day.  But I feel good enough to get back to as close to normal as I can get while being mindful.
    Ugh man, human body sucks.

I'm trying to come up with some ways I can help streamline my process to get things done a bit quicker by writing notes and ideas down here and there. I'd like to get a lot more songs done.
Although the new Interface I bought is basically unusable due to some weird latency/buffering issues that no matter what I do, I can't solve. Trying to get a return for a different one is proving difficult though. As I didn't get a chance to install it until a week or two ago. And i've only had one response from my Sweetwater Sales Engineer, and no responses from their support line on the website either yet since last week.
Pretty frustrating for a 300$ piece of equipment that is essentially almost unusable. I'll keep my hopes up and be patient however.

  7. Almost getting finished with Step Up.
Getting some more polished mixing put in and the final sections of the song. (This file might be louder than the others. So turn it down at first for now) The drum programming is still very much WIP. Though the snare is near final I think. (Which comes from the Korg M1)

  8. Basically finished and loopable (Seamless in Foobar. Which is a good sign). I'll move on to another track and come back later to make any changes later. You start to get to a point when listening to something so many times that you can't really make good choices. Any have any thoughts on the modal changes I added in the 3rd section? Tried to experiment without it sounding too out of place. After the 2nd loop it moves to 7/4 and returns to the original BMaj key but shifts to a different mode, mostly around C# Dorian. The original song shifts keys as well so it didn't feel too out of place to try that.
