  1. I'm glad you like it! As for the bass sound. It's a square wave that is being modulated by the lfo. It's a simple pulse width modulation patch. Pretty easy to make. I used Sytrus, but any synth can do it. I've also made it in FM8 and learned how to do it by watching a video where the guy (actually zircon on OCR) used Zebra 2. Pretty cool stuff. Hope that helped! EDIT: Or perhaps you meant the intro bass sound. That's one of the funky wave shapes that Sytrus comes with. I just used the patch called Kloug in Sytrus. Loaded it to the mixer and threw on a touch more mid with an eq, but nothing else really.
  2. Thanks for the feedback. I listen to a lot of Daft Punk so I might have unconsciously taken some inspiration from them. Who knows. Also welcome to the forums.
  3. Hello OCR! It's been a while since I posted anything so I thought I would return with an original. I wrote it after hearing Armin Van Buuren for the first time. Really cool stuff. Anyway I got inspired and tried my hand at writing trance. Leave a comment letting me know what you think or if it could be improved. Thanks!
  4. I like this particular piece of music quite a lot and I share a different opinion about the sounds used in the original. I personally like the synthetic keyboards and what not used by Vangelis. That's your opinion though so I will respect it and not argue it. The only reason I bring that up is because it pertains to your version. To me it seems like the only difference is the removal of the synthetic keyboard. This is pretty much a verbatim rendition. One notable difference though is the lack of dynamic's in your version. It all seems to plod on at the same dynamic and intensity, making the transition to the triumphant B section sound boring. Also the intro in Vangelis's version slowly builds to the theme, where as yours introduces it pretty much immediately. I will agree that it is hard to remix a song you like a lot. It's hard to be to creative when the melody is ingrained in your head. But you must try. I went back and read this and it seems like straight bashing but don't take it that way. It's criticism. Don't give up on this, there is a lot of potential in this track. Just polish it up... a fair bit.
  5. You've got a pretty good concept here but there are a few critiques I have. First and foremost is the rather strong bass. It doesn't overpower anything but it is constant and never lets up. Turn the volume down a bit. Second it is pretty conservative. There is not a whole lot of variation other then slowing it down and it can't stand on that leg alone. Take a couple of liberties with the melody. Make it your own! I do like the sounds though. I was reminded of mother 3. IDK if you used a GBA sound font or not but it sounds very cool. Also this song will probably get better with an intro/outro like you said you were going to add. I look forward to your next update.
  6. Well I must compliment on how good it sounds for being garageband. Very nicely done! That being said I think I understand the limitations of the software and how it affects the mix. The drum packs in garageband are rather lacking imho. They are quiet and sound pretty generic. The Dnb'esque section around 3 minutes sounds pretty good though. Also the synths in Garageband are also pretty weak and generic. Again nothing you could do much about. It's just Garageband. What you could control though is the composition and flow of the piece and that was perfect I think. Bravo!
  7. Very cool piece. I have a few suggestions though. I quite like the piano solo part, but one thing kills it for me. I can't quite get over how the piano sounds. It seems very thin and tinny. It sounds like a problem with the sample or vst you used.I recommend changing it. It also seems to fall behind the beat at points. The delay also sounds off beat at some times. Maybe tone down the volume of the feedback or fix the timing? I personally don't think it needs delay but its up to you. Also I got a fever, and the only prescription, is more bass drum! Jokes aside though give me some more bass drum! It's a huge part of developing the trance feel and it's too quiet! Pump it up man! Just be careful. That's all. Cheers!
  8. So I recently got FM8 and was experimenting with it when all of a sudden I came across this sound. I became inspired because I have been listening to a lot of justice lately and wanted to create a dirty sounding bass a la Waters of Nazareth. I didn't quite duplicate it, but I like it quite a lot. I wasn't sure what to do with it after I made the patch, so I just threw on a simple drum beat and a cool saw sound and, BAM! I ended up with this. Not a whole lot of musical merit here, just me messing around with a new VST and some humanization with a shuffle quantize setting. Enjoy!
  9. The source is already quite a catchy song and I really like this version. I will agree with comments made by Willrock though, it is way too conservative. I would like to hear a new version if you decide to re work it. But as it stands i don't think it would be passed. Shows a lot of potential though.
  10. Very well done. You had a perfect balance between source and oc. Everything sounded fine to me as well. One thing I noticed though was (and I don't know if this is the right word to use) the violin's syncopation. Not sure how to say it but when the main melody was played at around 14 seconds a note was skipped and the rhythm was very bouncy. I understand that this was done as interpretation but I found it unsettling at first. The feeling wore off as the piece went on. I enjoyed this quite a lot though. Great work!
  11. Hello, OCR. It seems I have a bit of explaining to do. I see now that uploading a wav file is a bit of a no no. I wanted to try uploading a wav just to see how high a quality file I could get and I thought that tindeck could handle a 34 mb file. When I realized that it would not play the song immediately, I thought to myself, "well if they want to hear it they can just download it and open it in iTunes or whatever" and I left it at that. I see now that it is sort of inconvenient to have to download it and open it when it should just play automatically. So here is a much more manageable file. This is the exact same song as the wav, just 30 megabytes smaller. @Rozovian Thanks for the feedback. One of the first things I'll do with this is re write the drums because going back and listening after about 3 days, I agree that the kick rolls do get a bit repetitive. I hope to have a new version up soon.
  12. I just noticed that tindeck does not automatically play the song. Does anyone know why and how I can fix it?
  13. Hello OCR. This is my re imagining of the the theme for the lost woods in both Ocarina of time and Twilight Princess. Elements of both versions are present, although the TP version stays pretty true to the original. I am going to try to steer away from the ambient epiano after this one. It's still a WIP so any feedback would be appreciated. I have spent a lot of time with the track and a fresh set of ears would be beneficial. Cheers! Original: My Verison:
  14. Oh man this is sick. The slight changes to the bass did the trick. I also really like how it slowly comes back down after an awesome groove. Really cool man. Really cool
  15. I quite enjoyed this. I would have to agree that the percussion could stand to be a bit louder. Definitely catchy though. Well done
  16. I really like how the percussion starts out lo-fi and slowly becomes a real kit. I would not say that the two clash, but the bass sounds sort of like it's fighting to be heard. Perhaps changing what the bass plays would make it more interesting. The line it plays is easily lost in the mix. I don't know if it will work, but give it a shot. This is a nice groove
  17. Very cool! I myself am working on a chiptune although I am using a daw instead of a tracker. I want to learn how to use a tracker but until then I dabble with the genre in FL. One thing that I noticed about this track is that it has quite a lot of bass. I personally like a lot of low end and you handled having loud bass well. It's easy (for me at least) to focus on the bass and forget about the rest of the frequencies. Well done.
  18. This was really good. It stayed really close to the original. Perhaps a bit to close. I personally didn't mind because it was interesting to listen to and different enough that it was not an exact copy, or just a cover with no flavor, but that is one thing that I noticed and other people on here may comment on it too. If you ask me though, it doesn't detract. Well done. One thing I must compliment you on is when the ocean sounds started. It was almost like it ended where Link's Awakening began. The distant flute was very cool as well. I would have to agree with Rozovian though. The wave sound was kind of loud. Maybe turn it down just a hair though because I like the effect it gives. Otherwise you have a very cool piece here. EDIT: PS. I quite like the picture you used.
  19. I like it. Stayed pretty true to the original and had enough variation I think and kept it interesting. Really the only complaint I have is about the slap bass sound. To me it sounds a bit robotic. It's really pronounced around the 1 minute mark and doesn't sound quite right. The organ sound was quiet as well. You marked it as finished though so you are obviously happy with it and that is fine. These are just things I noticed. Otherwise well done! as for Vegas, I really don't know the best rendering setting that has HQ sound and a small file. I would say Main Concept MP4. It maintains HQ audio, but has a pretty big file size. You can customize the render settings in vegas too. When you go to render the video, there is a button that says custom and you can go in and change the audio to render at 256 KBPS which is pretty high quality. Like I said though, the file will be pretty big. For a 2 minute song I would say it would be around 4 megabytes. Thats all I got. Hope this helps!
  20. Very Good remix! I was bobbing up and down in my seat for the whole thing! I especially like the sliced part around 2:30 and later on around 4 minutes or so. The panning effects used were pretty cool too. Downloaded.
  21. Well, It's been a while but I think I've done it. I reluctantly call this one done, merely for the fact that someone is bound to find something they would like to change. I appreciate all the feedback I get, but I honestly don't think there is anything else that can be done to it. I am happy with the way it sounds now, and just want some closure. Here it is. The final version of Downtown, My Traverse Town Re-imaginig.
  22. Hello again! I took the suggestions made by Rozovian to heart and reworked the drums. I hope they came out alright. I am not a drummer so I just made what I though sounded cool. I also reworked the eq'ing and hopefully evened out the sound a bit more. I think it looks fine and wave candy tells me that I have a full spectrum without the bass overpowering anything. I would appreciate any feedback you have. Thanks for listening! Mr.Pickle
  23. Why Thank you! I've been described as a badass ever since I was a child. haha Anyway this is the newest version of the song. I think it is pretty much done. I didn't move away from what I had before to much. I just eq'd it a little bit more, changed one of the epiano sounds, the lead synth, and the drums a little bit. When I was working on this one I wanted it to be like the original in the aspect that I wanted it to be sort of background music for the area, not like a stand alone song. Not to say that the original theme cant be its own song, but it was written to be bgm. I would love to hear feedback on whether or not it would make a good background song. And here's the link. Am I using emoticons to much?
  24. @Sir Jordanius Thanks for the feedback. I will keep your suggestions in mind as I work on it. @Hidan Thanks! Glad you like it. I made this song in FL and used Sytrus and the rhodes preset for the e piano. I threw a flanger on it too. I did not use a midi. I know how to play it for guitar, and I could click it in to FL's piano roll. I learned it all by ear. Thanks for the responses! Ill have a revision up soon.
