First off, I'll say that ambient trance-y songs are my favorite to listen to. This remix conveys a wonderful atmosphere, and you can almost feel the chilly wind coming through the massive cavern you've been stuck in for nearly 10 minutes now. You'd smack Yoshi, but this chill tune is playing in your head, and you just want to relax. McV truly invented the time warp with this song. You listen to it, and then it's over. Five minutes worth of chilling in seemingly a minute's length of time. I only typed up to the previous sentence of this review in the time I listened to that song. This is great stuff, well arranged, impeccable production. Must listen. I command you. Become a follower of McV! Not really, but this comes HIGHLY recommended.

OCR00859 - Secret of Mana "Stomp the Summer Sky"

I feel your pain Ziwtra. Using free software to remix is a pain in the ass. But you'd be surprised with the sounds you can get. Don't give up, and please please pleeeeeeeeeeeeease work on those chords. Though they do add a weird harmonization, I'd really try to keep away from the dissonance created when two or more notes do not make a proper chord. Perhaps finding some better samples will also be to your benefit. Did you think of using some soundfonts? Regardless of the flaws, this was a decent remix. Good source selection, and good ideas to better it. I would really consider reworking this piece, taking the criticism we've given you into consideration. This has a lot of potential. And don't give up because you're using free software, you find loopholes every once in a while. -
OCR00856 - Legend of Zelda "Gold Cartridge"

Very well done. I must say that I didn't mind the reverb. The drums were mega catchy, and the fretless bass (god bless the fretless bass) sounded real enough to be very convincing. My only problem with the song is that it's the Overworld Theme. The original is just too well know, and you can't listen to this remix without comparing it to the original. At least that's what I ran into. It's not a fault of Quinn in the least. This comes recommended to anyone who can listen with an unbiased ear. If you can't look past the original material, you might want to look elsewhere. All in all, a good remix. -

*Runs to switch on some Flock of Seagulls* Boy this reminds me of when I was a wee lad. I absolutely adore this song. The pseudo-80's new wave sound works great with this tune. I'm very impressed. My venture into the 80's sound ended with mixed results on a remix of the Bale castle theme from Legend of Dragoon. Though repetitive, the song stayed fresh just out of the sheer fact that it's totally different from what we're used to hearing. You can listen to this and imagine that hard shooter stage that you couldn't pass. Brought back memories of 1943 and Legendary Wings for me. I just can't get over the sound. Perhaps New Order meets Depeche Mode, with a pinch of A Flock of Seagulls. Throw in action-packed aircraft annihilation, and you've got a good remix. Comes highly recommended to anyone with an open mind or a love for the new wave sound. -
OCR00689 - Final Fantasy IV "SNES Battle Medley"

While the arrangement is awesome, I play guitar and I'll complain about the quality of the distortion. A thicker, juicier distortion would really work in the song's favor. Especially the FF4 boss theme. That melody screams for sustain and massive amounts of distortion. The style with which it was played fits perfect, although the "solo" really struck me as, well, not all that great. The bass guitar sounded really good, although I can tell it was played with a pick. Not enough thump to it. I can understand why, cos if you know how to play these basslines, they are pretty heinous. Overall, truly awesome. Recommended. -
OCR00513 - Zelda II "Temple Trippin'"

This was a nice little jam, but nothing to write home about. Simplicity is a good thing sometimes, and it worked wonders for this song. The already-complex palace theme would really hurt if tampered with too much, so LaRux keeps on the safe side by sticking to the original, yet thumping out some nice trip-hop beats. If you like the original, and you like a good bass drum rhythm, check this out. If you're looking for a big, complicated remix, look elsewhere. If you're in the mood to bob your head to a nice little beat, this is recommended. -
OCR00715 - Tales of Phantasia "Journey to Thor"
Straziante replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I absolutely love this song. The strings could use some work, but they still give the song an "urgent" feel that works in its favor. The gradual building of the song was really nice, and completely annihilates any repetitive feel most remixes hint at. The SFX are wonderful, and really recreated the mood of Tales of Phantasia, minus the XXX. The break with the choir was a nice transition into the conclusion that totally went ape-shit with wholesome techno goodness. Even with the bad violin sound, I found this to be quite the remix. Recommended highly. -
OCR00778 - Donkey Kong Country "Blue Vision"

Mad props to Jordan for once again putting me in awe of his... er... awesomeness. I would have never guess that this song could be remixed so well. I can see an arrangement, easily. But a full-blown remix? I wouldn't have seen it coming. The ambient feel really pushed the watery feel into every note of this track. Seriously, this is the kind of song you could play in your car and pick up chicks with. The bassline gave it a reggae-ish feel, while the synth with the melody keeps the song moving along as you let yourself drift into the placid realm this song creates. The layers upon layers of harmony are simply amazing, and I couldn't imagine this being done any better. Absolutely wonderful and an instant favorite for DK Country fans and trance lovers alike. -
OCR00800 - Chrono Trigger "The Trial in Concert"
Straziante replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I can honestly say that this is the best piano remix of a video game song I've ever heard. I sat and listened to this about 4 times after I downloaded it. It's been on my playlist since I saw it was newly posted. I'm more of a drums and guitar person, but believe you me, I mean it when I say I wish I could do what Spekkosaurus did on this song. Amazing. The playing is so well done, it's easy to forget it's a solo piano when you're listening to it. "The Trial in Concert" is perhaps the best candidate for a closing track on an OCR mix CD. -
Jordan, a.k.a. -blind-, is by far one of the best remixers to post techno remixes here. With this remix, he lives up to his previous submissions. I really don't remember this song too much, mainly cos I didn't play StarFox all that much. This is true raving music. The creepy vibe works well.

OCR00648 - Radical Dreamers "Far Promise ~ Drama"
Straziante replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Matt Pollard is one of my favorite remixers. I must say that this song is not as complex and developed as much as his other works, but the simplicity works for him in this case, in my opinion. I really love the original, and I'm glad mp took a stab at it. I find it more enjoyable than the other Radical Dreamers remixes, and the guitar and drum work really matches well with the music box melody. I recommend to any mp listener, and to anyone who enjoyed RD. -
I'll say Criosphynx from Chrono Cross, Deathevan from Breath of Fire 2, and Ozma was slightly difficult, considering I forgot to re-equip strong weapons after my trek to Ipsen's Castle...

OCR00609 - Chrono Trigger "Dream of Zeal"
Straziante replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow. Just wow. I was so sick of Zeal remixes. I almost didn't listen to this one until I decided that I owed it to myself to listen to something new. So I clicked on the link, and after a few seconds I get this (for lack of a better word) PHAT drum beat bumping through my speakers. I knew I had found something awesome. That little melody came in, and I was nearly foaming at the mouth. I was loving it only 0'08" lol Then the sub-bass came in and the strings shortly after, and I swear I must have looked primitive, jumping around like that. I hadn't played CT in a year or so, and this song made me want to hop on the old SNES and hand Lavos his ass again. Seriously, I wasn't jumping around and stuff, but I was blown away by this mix. I'll go with the 6/5 too. Best CT remix I have ever heard. -
OCR00786 - Mega Man 2 "Teardrinker"
Straziante replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is one of the best Mega Man remixes I've ever heard. I love the pseudo-chiptune effect that plays the original parts of the song. He turns stage music from one of the most annoying stages in a Mega Man game (ugh I hate water stages with spikes all over the place) and turns it into an emotional listening experience. The strings at the beginning weren't exactly in my favor at first, but once the song started moving along, I realized exactly how much depth they provided. The timpani was a nice touch, also. You have to remember that this was a pretty complex song to start out with, so of course you add some guitar chords in the background, and throw in some liquidy sounding piano runs, and you've got yourself quite a bit of stuff going on. But if you concentrate on the melody, it's flawless. Minimal drums was the best route the wingless could have taken here. He captured the spirit of the original, gave it an essence of a watery feel, and just overall, blew any other Bubble Man mix out of the water (no pun intended). Never have I heard such a complex remix. -
OCR00171 - Chrono Cross "Another Inspiration"
Straziante replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow this song blew me away. It was my favorite song from Chrono Cross, and it have become one of my favorite remixes ever. My only complaint was the absence of the violin melody (you know, the Radical Dreamers theme stuck in the song) but Peeples made up for it big time by adding his own little thing with the guitar chords later into the song. The feel of this song is mellow, yet uplifting, and that's kinda hard to pull off, in my opinion. Love it, 'nuff said.
