  1. I have submitted! With only 2 minutes to spare lol.
  2. The previous winners can only submit a bonus of their own source, but they can remix the other tune or mix them both as an official entry. As for the non winners, they can do whatever they like, whether it’s Source A, or Source B, or both. Usual, MnP rules would still apply of course. So yeah, one source is fine.
  3. Compo: MnP (Meat 'n Potatoes) The last round ended at a tie between me, TheVideoGamer and TheVodouQueen. Congratulations to both! As a result, we both get participate in a double dose round! Here's what TheVodouQueen had to say during her pick: "Right, so... Most people thought (especially back in the '90s) that girls weren't into video games--and if they were, they'd be playing something related to Barbie, or as later in the 2000s, the Bratz doll games, or something along those lines. But for me, as a girl, I was playing stuff like Shinobi 3. Not only was it one of my first games for the Genesis, (besides Sonic 1 & 2), it was one of my favorite of the action-platformer genre to play, (the next being Gunstar Heroes for the same system). It was also the first game with a ninja protagonist and theme I got to play, even before Ninja Gaiden or Strider. I used to play the ever-loving shit out of this, and the soundtrack is not only awesome and high-octane, but shows off a lot of what the Genesis had to offer for its 16-bit soundscape. Sad to see, again, it be one of those games on OCR grossly under-represented, with only--as far as I can see--the song 'Whirlwind' being remixed. So, I really want to pick a source from one of the classics and my personal faves. And I hope everyone else gets to enjoy too, if they hadn't heard this one before. ^^ Going for something a lil' bit...darker, this time. Let's see what ya'll can do with it. <3 " - TheVodouQueen GAME: Shinobi III (Sega Genesis/Mega Drive) SOURCE: Inner Darkside VIDEO: And here is what i had to say about my pick: "I went for a game with arguably a simple soundtrack, but a damn near effective one. As you can tell, i'm a huge electronica nerd, so soundtracks like this to me, are just awesome. The game was supposed to be revolutionary, advertised as the next evolution in gaming, however it turned out to be complete garbage. Development hell, clunky controls, a soundtrack that was supposed to be by Brian May (Of Queen Fame), full motion video for all scenes, and of course 32mb of power. It never came close sadly. The robot designs were modified at the last minute, so the graphics didn't use it's full potential. The FMV scenes were scrapped, meaning only the intro is full motion video. Mirage could only license one Brain May song, already released under the name "The Dark" as an opener to his debut solo record "Back to the Light", the rest of the score was done by Richard Joseph and Jason Page (Also noted for it's rave score, than Brain's rock styled affair), and the controls were reported to be really clunky and stiff. Oh well, if you ignore the controls, the game actually looks great, especially one of the higher end, in terms of graphics. Anyways enough about history, this track is awesome (As is, the whole soundtrack). It balances out a perfect blend of simplicity, combing Breakbeats, Bass Stabs, Cyberpunk like synth chords, and a military marching rhythm. I think this can work for a great range of styles. Hell it might even work great with dark strings for a classical music setting! All in all, this one can be integrated into some many ideas, i hope you have a lot of fun with this!" - TheVideoGamer GAME: Rise of the Robots (SNES) SOURCE: BHF03 Builder VIDEO: Deadline: 16th April @ 1PM Closing Date: 18th April @ 1PM Vote Ends: 25th April @ 1PM MnP ARCHIVE - made by Trism submit: http://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/MnP123 MISSION STATEMENT The goal of Compo:MnP is to promote that "meat and potatoes" conservative approach to remixing: this includes the mood and composition of source tunes. It is up to the remixer to create their own personalization, or to simply give it a sound upgrade. Moreover, the compo is a great opportunity to hone your remixing skills and give video game music the respect that is due. SOME reinterpretation is recommended, but not required. MnP Instructions/Guidelines Source-Picks are limited to the era of gaming 1984-2006. In other words, Nes/Sega Master to PS2/GC/XBox 1. So far i'm still undecisive about this, but keep an eye out, things might change. Modifying the Source is fine, so long as it doesn't sound completely separate from its original intent. If you're gonna do a genre change, at least make sure the original aspect of the source is not lost. Tempo changes are fine, as long as it's not a big change. I'm talking like, going from 80bpm to 140bpm. Submissions must be at a maximum of 20mb (keeping in step with ThaSauce's file size max), and submitted as a MP3 file. Only 1 entry per participant. Previous winner cannot participate but can submit a BONUS entry. Try to avoid making quality-based comments on submissions until after the Round is concluded. It is to avoid a Bias in Votes. MISC/TIPS - When picking a source tune, make sure it has a MIDI to make people's lives easier. - In-game sound FX are permitted, so long as they don't comprise the whole track (i.e. replacing entire MIDI tracks with just sfx)
  4. I was more of a Mega Turrican guy. Never really paid attention to the others. That's the one i'm most familiar with. This source is quite lovely actually, i'd love to have a crack at this.
  5. Likewise so did i. Entrant in! I had so much fun with this one...
  6. Results In Joint 1st place with 12 points each: TheVideoGamer and TheVodouQueen The only entrant left is Souperion's bonus, which makes the 2nd, 3rd and 4th inapplicable... TheVodouQueen please PM me with your source pick for Round 123. Ideally for next week. (Roughly the 20th of March) I will also be including a source pick too. Double Dose in the next one! Congrats to everyone who participated, you peeps did great! Comments: I didn't bother voting, since i only have the option of one entrant, but i did like both of them a lot. Here's a few things i had to say. I loved the Hi-NRG house vibes of TheVodouQueen, what a great take on the source! The synths were amazing, and actually suited the feel of Kirby. I love the way it develops too, it keeps the interest going for it's run-time. If i have to critique it, i didn't like the abrupt cuts. I know it's like a pause into the main beat (Heard especially in the intro), but it felt too hard for me. Also i detected timing issues in the hats. It felt way out of sync with the rest of the drums, but it could be the nature of the loop. The vocal samples were good, but i would have worked them more into the track. The synths though are awesome, and fit the track to the T. Well done! Souperion's was really good also, definitely love how period appropriate it feels. Like it sounds perfect for the N64. I don't have any issues, arrangement wise, it sounds great, however i do feel it's very focused on 1-1 accuracy, than transcribing the feeling of the original into something unique, but i will say i dig the original melody writing at the end. The tempo change is a great idea. All in all, great job on this!
  7. FTM is Famitracker right? If so i've used this program. Now i haven't converted anything to MIDI, because i don't usually need to, but i did come across this which might be helpful.... http://forums.famitracker.com/viewtopic.php?t=610
  8. Ok so here's my detailed feedback, to make up for my rushed mess earlier. It also gives me a chance to properly reflect on what i think on each track. Anachronium - I really like this arrangement. The originality shines here. The vocals were a lovely touch, especially in the beginning. I still think you are amazing at brass, i always dig your swells. Now what i said originally was that it takes a while to get going, and to a degree i still stand by that statement. It's very slow in developments, which to me sounds a bit boring. However unlike last time, i've altered some of my meanings behind it, as i do think the way you incorporate simplicity into the melodic touches is amazing. The main focus into why i said that, largely stemmed from a dynamic issue. For me, when listening, the lack of build-up and tension made it a little boring as a result. I didn't hate it or anything, it was mostly i needed excitement. However on a good note your melodic writing is amazing, and i love the way you've taken a simple melody and made it your own, that's my highlight for sure. Well done on this! Souperion - Listening to yours, i did not find the arrangement sloppy, a point that has stayed with me when revisiting this. The reason i don't find it sloppy, largely stems from how it transitions from a orchestral feel into a rock feel, lovely touch there. The whole sound is also amazing too, that synth bass is super satisfying and fitting to the music. This is also a good example of electronics blending well with the orchestra. If i had to point out a few improvements which i did not write down, is that the drums/synths to me were getting pushed down by the orchestra. Makes sense to me, since that is the style, however i felt the rock could have been amplified if the drums and synths were taken up a notch. Or maybe tone down the strings. I love your style and arrangement though. Definitely enjoyed this one a lot though. Well done! TheVodouQueen - What i dig about this one, as i do with all your compositions, is the sheer level of originality. I love it. Never expect this into a jazz arrangement (Even if mine leans towards that), and that to me is what i love about it. I also like how well all the melodies translate well. Personally for me, and i picked upon this when listening, but some of the sounds felt...soundfont'y to me. Not necessarily low-quality, far from it, yet at the same time it doesn't feel high-quality. What could work as well, and what i noticed, is that i got the impression at the start you were trying to amplify the lo-fi early jazz aesthetic. Again, shows how creative you are. Now i love that, but it slides off around a minute in. It's as if you've forgotten about it. I felt you could have continued it, to really hit it home (Particularly with the use of the Vinyl Crackle). It's only me though, taste is personal. The last part was amazing, i love how you stripped it down into something minimal before brining it back up, really nice touch. Overall i just love the creativity, i think you've done an awesome job on this. Well done! Wassup Thunder - I dig that electric bass, very fitting to the track. Feels like it shares similarities with Souperion's track, but more laid back, and not as intense with synths or guitars. I do love the drums in this one. Incredible beats, such a great arrangement, with the beats. The main issue i have with this, and it might be my ears, but the brass doesn't seem to fit right. It could be the attack, but it gives me the impression it's not timed right to the metronome, or grid. I know with classical music and stuff like that, it's supposed to be human, but even humans keep tempo. However again, it's not frequent, so it might be me. Also though, on a good note, that piano is incredible. The chords and harmony used in the piano, just works sooo well. I love how it blends with the rest. Overall this is beautifully done. Well done! HarlemHeart360 - I didn't manage to finish my comment here lol. But nothing's changed here. I loved how you kept it very simple. Nothing too fancy, really amplifies how good the source is. Now listening now, i do think it's extremely bass heavy, and very loud. However at the time, i was out, and didn't have time to properly gather my thoughts, so i rushed it. But i do love the unique ideas here, the vocals were a really good touch. The simplicity is really why i like your arrangement a lot The others did great arrangements, with amazing ideas, but with tracks like this, great ideas start small. Like i said though, sadly it's very bass heavy, and to a definitely short. It feels like it could be expanded on. But it is a great start, with a lot of amazing potential. Really nice job on this though. Well done! That's all of them, that felt good, lol.
  9. Welcome to the Voting Stage! There are 3 entries this round. There is 1 Bonus entry(s) this round There IS a voter bonus this round! Souperion have a vote worth 2x. When Voting, if possible, avoid granting 1:1 covers top spot. MnP requires a bit of remixage after all. Don't vote for Bonus entries please. Do let me know if you have problems voting, and we can sort something out. Try and not make any comments about each entrant until after voting has concluded. Thanks! Participants may not vote for themselves. Vote ends March 12th 1Pm. Vote here: http://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/MnP122
  10. Great brass band arrangement. Now i'm wondering who will incorporate strings to the party....
  11. I rushed it that's why. I was out at the time, and i wanted people to be at least aware of my basic thoughts.
  12. It's definitely good for electronic styled music. If someone orchestrates it, then you are quite talented, because it might be hard to do...
  13. I had no problems voting. Well...apart from the fact i last minute'd, so i could only get quick thoughts in. If i have to be honest, i was terrible at giving feedback, i needed to really gather my thoughts. So I'll do it here, hold on.
  14. In fact what i'm gonna do, is from now on, the round will be as normal, but there will be an additional 2 day gap for later comers. So it might say closed, but you can still submit (It's sorta like a, late arrivals type of extension, than a normal one.). This gives people who arrived late a chance to still enter. Also i've added an additional 2 days to voting, because of the extension.
  15. Also i'm giving 2 days extra, since there is only 2 entrants (Actually 1 entrant, and 1 bonus entrant.) I know it said it ended 8 minutes ago, but that's because i added a sort of late arrivals kind of extension. My entrant is out by the ways. (I didn't open it up for this reason. I'm literally giving 2 days for anyone to enter. After that, we vote.)
  16. If i'm not mistake your British right? Because the time zone is adjusted based on where your from. So if your from the UK you would use BST, or Greenwich Mean Time. If your American you would use EST time. If your from Russia it would be MST And so on. Always check your time zone to see it matches. I believe 1pm is for American peeps.
  17. The problem with Schoenberg, Stravinsky and the like, is that if you are uneducated or unaware of these guys work (And to a degree background), it gets thrown in the usual garbage bin as, unwanted random dissonance, which only comes from those who just simply put it on, rather than understand why. When i was young i had to study this dude, (Schoenberg), and i did not enjoy his music at all, it was just unorganized, unfocused, it felt like some dude organising an orchestra of newbies to just to play their instruments, like no sheet music, just play randomly. But as i grew, and studied him, i learnt what he was doing, and why. He wanted to break free of the convential music norms society has so clearly tried to hold onto. He's basically saying "Hey, we've done major and minor for so long, let's try the other end. Let's make it the norm". And if you want the other extreme, Steve Reich and the like, challenges us to deeply analyse the qualities of a continuously endless, simplistic looped phrase. Steve Reich and the like, challenges us to deeply analyse the qualities of a continuously endless, simplistic looped phrase..... Also in response to the perfect pitch debate (Just thoughts by the way, not saying this is the definitive answer): 1. People always like to think you either have perfect pitch or you don't, which i think it's bull. You cannot just get it from birth, that's quite a intense view to have. So while i might have gone a bit heavy on the idea that you can train it, i still think there is a time period to when one has perfected their pitch. It's the same as instrument prodigy's. When you say oh "this 5 year old is better than me" (After watching a video of some kid shredding the piano), your really looking at a talented individual with parents who have really pushed them to their limits (IE, they have done more intense practice sessions on their instrument than others, which is often due to strict parenting). You can't just say they're better....well ok, i have to be honest (They're usually way better than me lol. Although i'm joking when i say this, they're pretty much self-esteem destroyers lol). 2. The minute you get "it" the minute you have it is also a problem. I think there is a time frame, in that you can build-upon your discovery, to really make perfect pitch more perfect. 3. Majority say it goes away when you age, to where if your older, you have a harder time. I watched a video from a dude named Rick Beato about it. It's pretty fascinating. Anyway's i don't want to ramble. Interesting perspectives eh? Since you play in an orchestra, you probably have more hands on experience than me, so take my response with a grain of salt (After all, we are forgetting the other key elements, timbre, texture, tonality, tone, rhythm, tempo, arrangement etc...)
  18. Daaam this one's got an excellent taste. I love Bomberman, amazing choice!
