I like the character this one has, I was definitely grooving to this a bit. This is recorded live, right?

I do have to agree on the drums, as they sound a bit like the mic is against something that's vibrating. Just a tinny sound to it but also sounds a bit like a bass guitar due to the rhythm at times? This is pretty consistent through the song. If it is a bass guitar, some depth added to it would go really well. And based on what you already have, sounds like you could get this going no problem.

Piano also sounds a little out of tune, which is noticeable at the beginning, but mid point to the end, sounding good.

But the horns are top notch, as are the other guitars, and you definitely capture the mood you're going for.

Looking forward to hearing more of your work!

There's actually nothing live here, it's all VSTs. I appreciate the feedaback, I'll take a second look at the piano vst that was in use here. Totally agreed on the bass guitar, personally I think that's the biggest problem in retrospect.

    Thanks for listening! :)

Yo....this maybe the ONLY orchestral rendition of her theme but DUDE you made it feel like ending credit of a movie good! However the piano and some of the drums sound liek they are VERY far away from the mic, was that intentional?!

Cheers mate! Haha, to be honest, I struggle with spatial stuff in my mixes, as I have to mix with headphones by necessity most of the time. I recently got a set of DT 990s that I'm hoping will help me identify spatial issues a bit easier. Thnx for the feedback!

  3. Hey there,

I'm thinking of submitting this piece, and would be curious to get some opinions on it. It's an orchestral rendition of various themes from RDR infused with a bit of a rock vibe here and there.

Getting brass samples to sound good is the holy grail for me, so I'd appreciate getting some insights into how off the mark I am. Thanks for your time

An orchestral arrangement with a piano solo in the first minute? Sweet. I'm envious of your brass (that's a rare statement, isn't it,) especially right on 1:01 to 1:13. I think a little dramatic emphasis could really give this some (dragon) punch. Take 1:14 to 1:16, one of the repeating parts of the song. The E flat and the F right at the end of the measure. Each time you play that segment, those notes are a little quiet. Each time I heard it, I wanted them to punch out, you know? Probably wouldn't be good for that emphasis each time, but just a suggestion. Anyways, this is good work with some real nice innovation.

Cheers mate, I appreciate the feedback! Those brass sounds are all default EastWest libraries with the Spaces plugin, I wanted to test out how fast I could put something together from scratch and get a decent sound. That Spaces plugin seems to go a long way.

The instrumentation/arrangement is perfect for that grand ballroom vision. Really enjoyed it! :-D

Only thing I would consider for future projects of this type would be to upgrade your strings to a nice sample library to punch up that realism. They aren't cheap (generally $200-500), but even some of the free ones around now can be used to great effect: http://musicproductionhq.com/free-sample-libraries/

To expand on this, you could also try giving Eastwest a go. It offers a subscription service, where you can get access to tons of good samples for a monthly fee, instead of splashing out crazy amounts right out of the gate.

In any case, BenEmberly you've done a stellar job with this piece, superb instrumentation, and an obviously matured and learned approach. If you don't mind me asking, how do you go about putting something like this together? Do you jot down everything to piano, or start with a particular instrument, and prove out that entirely? I'm curious to see what approach other folks use to generate their compositions, I tend to be fairly pell-mell lol.

Ah, this is nice. As an amateur who is experimenting with orchestral software, this is inspiring. And as a Metroid fanatic, my bias is triggered. Anyways. Each of the sources is well represented in the suite, and are faithful to their standard atmospheres/moods: A lovely, delicate introduction; that riveting 1:00 mark with high vibrato low strings to replicate that ominous intro of old; a percussion heavy Kraid's lair that might as well have "abandon all hope ye who enter here" on the wall; and an energetic march for Brinstar that leads it to nice close. The whole thing runs pretty smoothly and cohesively. I was a bit thrown off by Kraid's lair, though, with the drums dominating the first dozen seconds or so. But at the same time, it's kind of catchy. There's plenty of variation throughout the sources in the piece, so it's not at risk of getting stale.

    Excellent work!

Thanks very much! Regarding the part where you were thrown off (drums at the start of Kraid's Lair), do you reckon something like this would be better handled by having the woodwinds playing the rhythm come in stronger first, before the drums? When I spend a while working on a piece like this, I tend to become 'deaf' to issues like this sometimes, so feel free to expand on what you reckon the problem is, it really helps!

    Thanks for listening and commenting!
