Arrangement please! As digital music increases in terms of audio fidelity, we may find out more and more about the human ear, things can always get crisper. However, what makes a song timeless is the arrangement. I personally think that making a production sound better takes time and experience, whereas making a better arrangement helps almost instantly, especially in terms of getting your remix on to OCR. Just listen to those classic 70's and 80's songs you love. Production is a bit swag by todays standards, but the arrangements are great. A nice sounding song can only take you so far. It needs a soul!

VOCR: Vocal Remixing Compo- WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
Malcos replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Competitions
Whew, that extension was much needed! Done. -
I agree with all that has already been said here. For me, the drums didn't blend with the rest of the instruments and really spoiled the feel of it. I really enjoyed the arrangement though. I will say no and ask for a resub because I think that only a small adjustment to the drums would have a big effect on the feel of the mix overall. NO (please resub)

OCR01569 - *YES* Touhou Youyoumu: Perfect Cherry Blossom 'Icy Peaks'
Malcos replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
This is superb. Organic, emotive, original. YES -
This is about 6db too low in terms of volume, could have been slightly louder. The production sounded quite tight, although the instrumentation itself could have sounded a little more defined. I do agree with what has already been said, particluarly with regards to the level of arragement. Not bad, but needs some more work. To reiterate what Liontamer said, put some more variation into the track to add more interest, because with a more interesting arragement I probably would have given this a yes. NO (please resub)

VOCR: Vocal Remixing Compo- WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
Malcos replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Competitions
Damn it, I just won't be able to record, I just haven't got the time or energy to do it! -
Ok, I would yes this if the production was right/tight. First of all, the bitrate is far too low, this should be constant 128kbps at least. Secondly, the piano is playing bass notes, but there is also a bass guitar - this is musical sin, and gives low end muddyness. Keep the piano away from the bass range. Drums would sound better if they weren't so compressed, lay off that a bit, because it makes it sound very unnatural. Finally, I personally feel that the reverb that was used doesn't do the piano justice, doesn't make it really shine. There also seems to be much less reverb on the piano compared to the drums and the bass. Apart from the piano clashing with the bass issue, I really enjoyed this arrangement. Work on this some more and please resubmit, this would be a nice one for the site. NO (Please resubmit!)

OCR01555 - *YES* Final Fantasy 6 'Lamentations'
Malcos replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
Tightly compressed drums come in very suddenly with the piano, I wasn't ready for that! The piano at 0.30 had a sudden release that sounded quite unnatural. Things were beginning to sound dramatically better at 1.14. Overall I think the percussion could have done with some more variation, particularly in the first half of the mix or so, due to the fact that the soundscape is sparse in that section. For me this mix was at it's best between 1.14-1.46. Ending wasn't too nice on the ears and didn't fit the feel of the rest of the piece. Some more work is needed on this, I would definitely like to see this resubbed. NO (Resub) -
This sounds hot. However, there is one gripe, the 'vinyl' crackling sounds are too loud! That almost spoils it. But for me this is a definite pass, not much judging even needed imo. YES
-
Why is the bass all muddy and stereo? Oh, Orichalcon mentioned reverb. Please don't use reverb on bass, it sounds horrid - one of the very few music rules. The loudness of the bass itself is fine though, although I'm sure some will disagree with me and say it's too much lol. Production quality on the whole is good. This sounds very similar to the original, which I know well. You haven't added much at all, in fact it sounds quite like this could be the original, and the original could be the remix. This needs more, much more. The beat is so basic, and there needs to be more original stuff added. The thing is, you seem to have gone for the same vibe as the original did, but it doesn't quite reach it. Try a different approach. NO

OCR01561 - *YES* Great Giana Sisters 'Synthpop Mix'
Malcos replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
I definitely agree with Zircon with the compression issue. It makes everything sound really flat, minus the pump that overcompression can sometimes give to a mix. The sounds choices weren't that great, and coupled with the repetitive nature, and sections where nothing much was happening, I don't think this quite reaches the bar. Like Vig, I do think this was a 'by the numbers' mix - this needs some more personality. NO(Resub) -
What's a good keyboard for a beginning pianist?
Malcos replied to LetoII's topic in Music Composition & Production
Try getting the M-Audio Prokeys 88sx. No speakers, but it has on board sounds and midi. I'm very happy with it, I use it mainly as a controller for Reason. http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOPRO88STAGESX http://video.google.co.uk/videosearch?q=scott+houston Just look for the 'how to play' vids, you might pick up a few tips there. -
*NO* Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES) 'Forest of Dreams'
Malcos replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
This sounds very...stiff. Up until 0.58 it sounded ok, but after that, the string work was very unrealistic, the low cello being the exception. The mix sounded quite sparse at times, and I didn't feel that the source was expanded on much, if at all - the rearrangement factor here is extrememly minimal. This could have been taken much further. NO -

Yeah! Count me in! -
Very laid back feel to this. I didn't particularly like the bass sound of this - perhaps a stronger, smoother, less 'slappy' bass sound would have been better. During the intro, when the bass came in, it sounded very slightly off key to the intro pads. The ending could have been a little better - not even a reverb trail off? This mix could be a yes with some tweaks. NO(Plz resubmit)

*NO* Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (GG) 'Highest Sky'
Malcos replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
Production is good, nice beats. As others have said though, it definitely lacks that OC element to it, the expansion of the source tune. You haven't added enough original elements. No original melody of your own to complement the source melody, no other sections. In music there is usually a 'section A' and then 'section B'. This was just the same section constantly with the only changes being different instruments taking over from others, but playing the exact same notes. At 2 minutes into the song, as Vig mentioned, the left and right hand piano programming went a bit wrong when the left hand and right hand parts went to play the same note and ended up doubling it. Sounds phat, but needs more variation to qualify for OC. Keep working on it. NO -
*NO* Phantasy Star Online 'The Stars of Online Phantasy'
Malcos replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
I can only repeat what Liontamer has said really. Everything from the title of your mix to the synth choices were just not original enough, and the high frequencies on the synths are indeed too high. The tune was also quite repetitive - not up to the OC bar just yet. I recommend that you make use of the WIP forum for peer feedback. Keep working on yout mixing. NO -
OCR01539 - *YES* New Super Mario Bros. 'Mushroom Maddness'
Malcos replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
I agree with what has already been said, lots and lots of textures here, and lots of original elements, minus that drum beat at the beginning ("breathe and stop, for real, and gimme what ya got!"), which did take away from the original stuff (and lots of it) that were presented later on in the mix. I didn't think that drum loop was a good idea, as it initially gave me a bad impression. The varied arrangement is constantly evolving, and while it does sound rough at times, it is definitely passible in and of itself imo, and with that arrangement, this can only be a YES -

In Reason 3 (don't know about 2), you can save your song, and then open the browser and look for the song you just saved. If you highlight it, it'll then tell you the length of the song. -

Do you compose at 16bit, 44.1khz as well? Because if you are composing at something like 24bit, 48khz, then when you export the hats will sound waaay off. I just compose in 16/44, that way when you export it sounds exactly the same. It's gonna end up in 16/44 anyway! -
OCRA-0008 - Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Project Chaos
Malcos replied to SnappleMan's topic in Album Reviews & Comments
So many great songs in this project. My favourites are: Walk on water: I was suprised to hear this done in a rock style, but it was excellently done! Three Ring Nightfall: Took the source to a whole new place, gave it a real action feel, not many would have gone for something so bold. Love it. Robotnik Radio: full of jazzy groove. I thought Hecenus' piano performances were amazing, hope to hear more of his stuff in the future. Shame about those WIPS not being finished, especially Hydrochill. Overall, I love this. Great work guys.
