I keep losing the time signature at times, which puts me on edge a bit - I've never heard the original so I don't know if it does that, but if you put that in then I like the effect. Or maybe it's just me. I like the weird scary feel of this, so unless this is too close to the original, I give it a YES

OCR01205 - *YES* Shenmue 'Dreaming While I Wake'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Yeah the vocals could have done with some more compression, but very nicely done overall. Enjoyed it more as the song progressed. I really got into Shenmue and I think that this does convey the feelings of Ryo well. Good stuff. YES -
*NO* Street Fighter 2 'Select Your Fighter and Fight'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
More work is needed here. My main concern is the sounds and the way they have been processed. There is no reverb on any of the instruments, and the pads that play the long notes don't sound nice to the ear at all. The mix also needs more development. The beat and groove is there, but unfortunately the sounds just aren't up to it. You need a new program or better sounds! NO -
OCR01207 - *YES* Morrowind 'The Final Stage'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I've never heard the original tune, so I can't comment on those terms. I thought the mix sounded good until the drums came in - they sounded a bit weak compared to the rest of the instruments. There doesn't seem to be much melodic variation - this could be the theme just being played again. I'll come back to this one later. -
OCR01209 - *YES* Legend of Zelda 'A Fate Preordained'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Nice chords on this. A bit quiet, but that can pass because it's an orchestral song. No reason why this can't be on this site. YES But needs a title. -
*NO* Final Fantasy 7 'Memory of a Little Girl'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
The elements of this mix are good - unfortunately it's very sparse indeed. The piano sample sounded a bit iffy, but that's not the issue, so that was just a nitpick. It's a difficult descision to make, because it is good, but at the end of the day this is just not engaging enough. NO -
OCR01211 - *YES* Star Ocean: Blue Sphere 'Killer Dokko'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
The mastering on this is very strange, there are definitely a few frequences missing here, it's like the whole thing has been gutted. As a result this lacks grit. I'll come back to this one after I've listened some more. -
Yeah that beat is tight. This is undeniably enjoyable. I guess he could have mixed up the synth arpeggio a bit, but nevertheless, definitely a YES
-
It would have been nice for the string instruments to have some more reverb on them, they sound a bit dry. But this mix has something about it. I've never played Ninja Gaiden II, so I cannot judge the similarity to the original, but I say YES
-
This could have done with some variation, and I didn't like the part in the beginning when the bass came in because then things got very messy tonal wise. The ending was also unsatisfying. Needs to be re-worked. NO

*NO* Total Annihilation 'Unreal Annihilation'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
You obviously know what you're doing. Unfortunately the sound quality and audio clicks and pops in the song mean that this is below oc standards. With better sound quality and no audio glitches, I would have given this a yes - and then there would be a discussion on whether your mix should be accepted even though it wasn't a remix of a particular song in the game. But as it stands, NO -
Ditto to what Daniel said. The chords and melodic content are all over the place. I can hear that everything has been eq'ed well, but this is not music to my ears. NO
-
I really like the sound of this. However there are some issues. The vibe is there but it never changes, and you're just dying for a drum fill to mix it up just a bit. There are also timing issues when the drum beat is re-triggered. I thought this was gonna be a great mix when I started to listen to it, but unfortunately it just runs out of steam. NO
-
This has a nice drum beat. Well programmed and with a good sense of rhythm. Unfortunately the other elements of this mix, namely the tonal instruments, are low-quality sounding, and more importantly some of them are playing out of key with each other at times. NO

OCR01203 - *YES* Adventure Island 'Tribal Warfare'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I couldn't find any orginal music for this unfortunately. There aren't many melodic elements to this, but it's great action music. I would have liked to have been able to compare the effect of this song to the orginal song, but as it stands YES -
*NO* Super Castlevania 4 'Sawtooth Darkness'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This doesn't really upgrade the orginal much. I can see what the mix is trying to achieve, but this needs to be mixed again. There are ways of making raw waveforms sound more refined. I would take all of the above advice into consideration. NO -
*NO* Kirby's Dream Land 3 'Bob Yer Squishy Head'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Very nice mix, and it achieves it's purpose; it's quite calm and relaxed. I'm thinking that I heard some off-key notes at around 1.47 and 2.33 but perhaps it was just dissonance? I'll come back to this one. -
*NO* Legacy of the Wizard 'Legacy of The OxxenWizzard'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Sound level is really low, and all the instruments are weak and low quality. You definitely need to work on your mixing and mastering skills. NO -
Wow, damn that kick is loud. I thought the 808 boom was going to be the loudest thing, so I turned it up a bit. The drums need to be balaced out a bit. The kick doesn't need to be THAT hard. The arrangement needs some variation, because this gets boring about half way through; this kind of mix would work as a backing track to vocals, but it's not. Work on this some more and then resubmit. NO

OCR01204 - *YES* Kabuki: Quantum Fighter 'Take the Red Pill'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Nothing wrong with showing female arse cheeks. You guys and your nudity issues. Anyway, about the mix. It works for it's style, and the sound quality is good. Not much to say really. YES -
This has been here for a bit eh? Great sounds, but wow those strings cut off way too quickly. The piano also sounds strange in terms of it's release, particularly at the very end of the song. Could be longer as well. This could sound really good, but it needs more work. Expand in all areas plz. NO
-
Lots of off-key stuff in here, particularly in the beginning between the strings and the sample chord. In addition, it doesn't look good if you use 2 raw Rex loops as your main percussion, it's too obvious and makes you seem like a novice. Good ideas, but not so good execution. Needs work. NO

*NO* Super Castlevania 4 'Stop the Castle (I Wanna Get Off Mix)'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This is a very different sound, and I like it. The arrangement works well, and I think that the mix achieves it's purpose. The transitions may change suddenly, but it's the instruments that remind you it's still the same song. I think this works. YES -
*NO* Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker 'Protect Your Island' *FT*
Malcos replied to GrayLightning's topic in Judges Decisions
This sounds good, but there's not a lot of rearrangement. It's like a template, and coupled with the fact that this is similar to the braveheart mix, NO Don't forget there is more than one winning formula. You must find your own style. -
OCR01201 - *YES* Final Fantasy 7 'Truth in Forgiveness Await'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
The sound quality in this is below par. The arrangement is very fluid, perhaps too much at times, but it is definitely impressive. The percussion sounds don't seem to gel together at all, and the overall sound is very thin. I like songs in this style, and I like this arrangement, but the sound quality is below the OC bar; I have passed mixes with questionable sounds before, but the sounds used in this without doubt put it way down the scale. NO Would be a yes with better patches.
