I didn't think that the beginning of this mix did the rest of it justice. The programming was excellent, and although I do have slight issues with the eqing of the drums in terms of low frequencies, it is a minor point. This is without doubt very original and even if it is quirky, it is refreshing. YES

OCR01049 - *YES* Chrono Trigger 'Song of the Mountain'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
The arrangement is good, although the mix does sound muddy at times, some eq could have been used to make each instument sound a bit more defined. YES -
OCR01056 - *YES* ICO 'Save Me (OCR Edit)' *FT*
Malcos replied to Israfel's topic in Judges Decisions
I haven't played this game or even seen it so I don't know how the music is, but I found this mix very enjoyable. I am always skeptical that long mixes can hold my attention, but this did so throughout. I particularly enjoyed the midsection. Unless this mix is discovered to be too close to the orginal by the other judges, this is resounding YES from me. -
Hmmm, and I liked this song. The guitar is often waaay out of sync, and it doesn't really do anything intelligent. It's just there for the sake of it. The drum beat and sounds are not appropriate IMO. Some of the string sounds were good for just a split second, and there was no ending. Oh and this was exactly the same as the original, only worse. NO

Loving these pads and ambient sounds, but this is just crying for escalation into a full mix. How dare you create such a wonderful intro and leave the poor song to die! NO

Hey I got the same message! Oh well, some of these samples are quite funny actually, I found the orgasm ones particularly funny. The only thing good about this is the beat. But yep, very beery, and very messy. You knew it was gonna be a NO

*NO* Legend of Scheherazade 'Scheherazadian Nights'
Malcos replied to Beatdrop's topic in Judges Decisions
Trance? What, you dare to defy.....ok ok I'll listen. Ok I can't say that I was tranced/bored at any point in this mix. The break at 1.26 still escapes me, even though I listened to it like 6 times. The arrangement is ok, and the sounds were well chosen IMO, although some sounds do sound too similar. The ending was not to my taste at all, that is the only big criticism I have. I know your stuff man, and you can bring out better than this. Sorry, but it's a NO from me. -
OCR01040 - *YES* Chrono Trigger '600 A.D. in Piano'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I would have liked some dissonance in this, but that's just me, if I could play piano this well every piece I made would have a dark side to it. Anyway, this piece is well played and, while a bit cliche, is still very good indeed. YES -
OCR01036 - Super Street Fighter II Turbo "Sexy Trunks"

Sweet stuff, especially loving the string stuff near the end. Great groove. -

Another icecap mix? The percussion is indeed good, as are the pads and other ambient sounds. The finger clicks add a sense of intimacy to the mix. However, I think the notes on the melody should be longer, I think it would definitely work better with this mix. The delay attempts to counteract this, but I do believe another another instrument would have been more effective. It's also quite repetitive, with no real bridge or break. NO It's not bad, but this tune has been done sooo many times, and this is not as compelling as others that have been through this forum. -
Hmm, not one for chiptunes myself. This is a little repetitive, but the arrangement itself is ok, and I like what the bass is doing with the chord in the second half - it makes things a little more interesting. It is very short though, and I think that the mix would be a lot better if it wasn't a chiptune. NO
-
I thought this was quite good. However, the arpeggiator synth work in particular could have been more interesting. The drums didn't evolve as I thought they would, and they sounded quite weak. Just needs a little more work. Resubmit please. NO

*NO* Destiny of an Emperor 'History of an Emperor'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I'm kinda half and half on this mix. The arrangement is good at times, then at other times it's not so good. The overall eq is kinda weird, not liking that. The piano in particular could have been sounded better. In the last half of the mix, a repetitive pattern began to surface. This mix IMO has no 're-listenability'. NO -
OCR01031 - *YES* Metal Gear Solid 2 'May Fortune Smile Upon You'
Malcos replied to Vig's topic in Judges Decisions
Wow this sounds beautiful! It sounds inspired, and it's flows really well. I could go on, but there's no point, the comments have already been made, you know it's good. YES -
I love the deep, low-frequency kick used here, but I think the mix relies on it too much. For those without big speakers or subwoofers this is going to sound really empty. Give us more melody, more mid-frequency layers, something else to listen to! NO Resubmit please.
-
The intro is quite confusing. The main mix is good, everything is eq'ed and fits together well which is excellent, especially considering that the texture of the mix is quite thick. Vocals have been arranged and processed well. YES
-
Not bad, but some escalation is badly needed here, the mix needs an climax and it hasn't got one at the moment. In addition, I think it would have been better to end the mix with a final chord. Nice atmospheric feel and good choice of sounds. Not a big no, but still a NO I would like to see this resubmitted. With a little more work this could be a good mix.

OCR01035 - *YES* Final Fantasy Tactics 'In Mem'ry of Sir Anthony'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Heh, this really does sound like a performance, particularly the ending part. Piano sound could have been better, but all in all this mix is different, and has 'character'. YES -
This has a good sound to it, no doubt about that. Unfortunately, it's the repetition that lets this down. The first half was good, but the second half didn't build on it or change in any way, it just seemed as if most of the riffs were just copied over in a different order. There was also parts where I felt that there could have been a huge buildup, or an alternate synth playing at the same time, or just something different! NO
-
This was boring because essentially it was the same thing over and over again. At the beginning of the mix the notes blended into each other, and that didn't sound too good. The drum beat wasn't very cohesive, and just seemed a little chaotic. At last at 3.30 we hear it change into something a little different. What this needed more than anything else was some more variation on the melody, a break from the monotonous theme just playing over and over again. NO

*NO* Super Mario Bros. 3 'Little Red Divin' Plumber'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Well the intro showed promise. The main mix was just too generic and bland. Simple four to the floor beat with single line bass and the melody on top. The last third of the mix finally added some individuality with drum change, but it wasn't enough. NO -
Doesn't add anything at all to the original really. This isn't distortion, this is just plain old nasty clipping. The mix didn't really have an ending either. NO

OCR01027 - *YES* Super Mario RPG 'Seeking Heat'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Well the bassline and percussion don't change much, if at all (filtering doesn't count). This is distinctive and has style, the only thing really making this a yes is the piano part, which was very well done indeed. Fade out was a bit off. YES -
Whooo yeah. Oh yes. Yesyesyesyeysesyes. Ok, ok. It is repetitive. But I can so see this on OCR and lots of people liking it. Yes I am making an exception here. My perogative - if the repetitiveness is that bad I will be outvoted. YES

OCR01018 - *YES* Ecco 2 'Medusa Mix' *PRIORITY*
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Damn the kick is low. The tempo changes take a bit of getting used to, but aren't too bad. Sounds are good and fit the mix. Got quite a bit of groove to it as well. YES
