  1. I'd be wary of any college that promises a degree in "Game Design". What does game design mean to them? A game designer is more of a renaissance man, who has been in the industry long enough to get credibility and respect for the occupation. You can come from almost any combination of job backgrounds and end up being a game designer. Creativity-wise, it's a career at the top of the ladder and therefore sounds ridiculous when you use that title for a degree. Giving out "Game Design" degrees is sort of like a business college giving out "Conglomerate CEO" degrees.

Anyways, I think game programming would be too nerve-wracking in the major leagues, and would rather be working as part of an indie group. I majored in Electronic Visualization and my main interest is web development. My web design classes and 3d modeling classes were decent, though. They made us follow a topic of interest and present it, in a manner that WE teach something to the students. It wasn't a cop-out from lazy teachers, either- it definitely allowed us to give some feedback on how the class was taught. My college was shit at giving internships and career help for us, but with luck I landed a good job after months of sifting through Craigslist postings. It really helped that I did some freelance work in the past.

  2. This is a PRESS conference, and even though casual gamers don't follow E3, they do get their tidbits of news sometimes found in newspapers. That's what the press and investors are there for. So yeah, Nintendo is showing us how easily they're making money, and these new doodads and products are poised to make them a lot of money, whether they're aimed at us in particular or not.

On something more specific, I don't think the new Wii Sports was a convincing effort to show the benefits of 1:1 control. It didn't seem like much of a change.

  3. I feel a new jack swing style in this one. Wish I could replay this one in my Roland groovebox- it has many of the right sounds for it.

You're on the right track, but the production needs the most help. The lead organ sounds thin, feels weird always panned to the left, and velocities need to be varied. The slap bass is very gen(eric) MIDI sounding. I especially agree with Rozovian that it could use more low end frequencies for the bass.

  4. You've done some great work here. The ambience, the sounds you chose for the leads and backing- it all sounds good together. You know when the beat kick in seems like a more appropriate time to speed up the tempo. Because the beat just keeps plodding on and you expect something to pick up. By the three minute mark you have something that sounds like psytrance, just a bit (the percussion reminds me so) but it would be better if you can push that a bit more towards the beginning. Listen to the track Wild Rush on the DDR games- it uses the same motifs but it keeps speeding up, switching the rhythm every couple phrases or so. It would be awesome if you can pull this off similarly, and end with some kind of fast breakcore beat before returning to a bit of ambience. As it is right now, I think 40 seconds is too long of a time for the track to wind down.

  5. I'd say do it DESTRUCTOID STYLE! But Destructoid uses a professional blogging system that's for internal use only, and would probably cost a mad amount of money if it were for sale.

I would vouch for the Wordpress multi-user package, but alongside vBulletin and the core site it seems like it would be a loose jumble of parts that can't be maintained well together. Sorta like a Genesis console with all the add-ons. It depends really on how the well code/files in this site are managed.

My studio, though the Virus was only temporary as it was just kinda too much money for me to spend at the time ($2000) so I got rid of it. That said, I did buy a kick mic and another overhead so I'll be able to track drums once I fix my mixer/get a new one (its emitting a ton of noise now).

Wow, you have a lot more equipment than I imagined. And you got the Virus! I envy that. Are you producing more than DJing I suppose? I took the DJ route more...most of my new toys are based on that.

Like I mentioned before I'm more DJ oriented but there's a MC-505 for some 90's style inspiration.

Not pictured here: a Lexicon Alpha audio interface which I just got last week.

I will update this picture when I get a hold of a camera again.

  7. I think this is a great dub track. You don't hear much dubstep around here. Needs more sub-bass tones IMO. Other than that the production is in tip top shape.

But as it was previously said, the biggest setback is the over-reliance of the sampled original music. Play the music back with your own instruments. There were many parts in this remix in which I wish I just heard your track. Using the original music as an intro is okay, but don't wear out its welcome.

  8. LOL no

    j/k :P

No, I'd really wish I can go and meet some of you people, but I lack a car and I'm not thinking of paying for a bus trip to go there at the moment. I know some people that have a car, but you know, this is how I imagine the short conversation to carry out:

"So what are your plans this weekend?"

"Well, I'd probably want to go to out of state to Louisville, gonna meet some people I know online there."

    "......."

  9. LOOOOL. Everyone I've seen talking about the new KRK monitors says the're ugly pieces of crap. I would agree, I prefer the current (old) look.

So looks like no matter which setup I get, I would need a subwoofer? I guess I could save for the Mackie ones if it means not needing a sub. But nah, I will prefer to try the Rokits without sub and see if I'm satisfied with the sound just with that. And if not I will get the sub.

No one has anything to say about the M-Audio set?

  10. DJing as in practicing or actually performing?

Practicing at home, doing studio mixes. The monitors would be the only source of sound. No extra booth or speaker systems.

If I ever get to perform out I'd probably start by renting or borrowing speakers from elsewhere, but that's a different topic altogether.

  11. Soon, I'll be in the market to get some studio monitors. My stereo system speakers have done me well for providing musical goodness for over 8 years but I want to step it up a bit now.

I want to buy a pair of active monitors for home use, just for a bit of production of electronic music and such. But to add on top of that, I also want to use them for DJing so I would need something that adds a bit of extra bass and treble to the sound. I will mostly be using them for DJing. The speakers I have now have 5 inch woofers and would probably buy monitors of similar size (6 inch woofer at most).

So far there are two that have interested me the most, the KRK Rokit RP5 and the M-Audio BX5A pair. Which would have better sound response for what I'll be doing? Are there other ones that you would suggest?

  12. Nekofrog hit most of the main points already. It's very midi-sounding, and not much stereo separation with the instruments either, especially the drums.

I'd like to hear some sustained bass in the part starting at 1:10. It would fill out the arrangement nicely.

  13. Just ran across this today on DJ Forums. Maybe some of you will appreciate this bit of chiptunage. Until now I've never a DJ mix of chiptunes and funky hip hop grooves, and if you haven't either, here's your chance.
