  1. Really excellent work. Wasn't a fan of the drawn out ending, but this is just all around omg great stuff. You really took this tune and done it rite.
  2. Well, originally yeah, originally Theophany was 4 people, but after our first few submissions we all got busy with other things. I started coming back to ocr a few months back, and didn't feel like making a new name, so Theophany is pretty much just me now (Jason).

  3. I didn't even know this project existed. Wow. I would have been so down for this. I was planning on starting a project for it myself one day if no one else did.
  4. /thread also, best post on ocr of 2009
  5. Thanks... I've kind of let this go since I got involved in Wild Arms. I do mean to finish it, I just want to make sure I don't slow the rest of the project up. I think I agree with you about the ending, though, rather than go into the Volvagia theme I think I'd rather make it just a bolero of fire remix. Plus this one still needs work, and could definitely be developed further. Volvagia deserves its own mix anyway. Same for some Majora's Mask tunes...
  6. Did I miss the actual announcement? Also, congrats on the project going official.
  7. I'm kind of wondering, now that I'm looking through the thread, I see there's a lot of tracks that are unclaimed. I haven't had time to go through them all, but if this Defeated track works out well, would you be down for claiming others? Maybe I'm just excited to finally be part of an ocr remix project, but it's kind of tempting me to start looking for other tracks to claim before we've even gotten started o_O Mezedude would not be pleased
  8. Just dropping in to say hi And yeah, I'm still at work
  9. haha lol "the ending fails".... I like your style. Well, how about this... I'll play around with the Volvagia theme, and we'll just see what I'm able to come up with. I have an idea for what it should sound like, so I'll wip it up and post it. I guess it would be better to decide whether or not the material is too long after the song is already made... and since there seem to be people interested, I'm willing to oblige No promises on how quickly I can do it, though.
  10. ~Update 3~ Added more strings, improved drums at end... although the ending is just temporary, I'm pretty much realizing that going into the Volvagia theme is a bad idea because the mix is already almost 4 minutes long, and I won't have time to do it justice. I should just do a separate volvagia remix for great justice. I have a lot of material already here for the bolero remix, I think I should probably just focus on making it as strong as possible. I should probably go through and give that bass I put in the intro more attention throughout the song. I think this is getting pretty strong, but I'm still not totally convinced the judges would YES this. The middle sections are what have me most worried. Any thoughts?
  11. Well, my last suggestion might be to try and run this by some people on the ocrwip channel on the irc, just because they usually have some good input. Otherwise, I can't really see a reason not to submit this. If the judges do happen to reject it for something they don't like, at least you'll know what it is from the judges decision, and then you can go back into the mix and revise the track. For example, I did an ff6 orchestral remix recently, but I get the feeling it's not going to get through. Still, once I know what the judges have to say, it takes a lot of guesswork out of resubmitting. I think your submission has a good chance of getting a YES though, it's really pretty solid.
  12. This sounds fucking great, man. Wow. Much clearer and for some reason all the sounds just pop way more in this version. Drums sound better, but I'd still like them to have a little more power personally. I'm not sure how to acheive this, but have you done any compression on the drums? That could bring up the "oomph" a little more. Lastly, I think you should go into the drum track, and like every other measure or every third measure, especially when the drums are doing the kick/snare rapid pounding, just change up something about the pattern, add an extra snare hit or two and just see what it sounds like. The drumming is mostly solid throughout the song, but whenever it does the kick/snare/kick/snare thing it instantly gets old, and I think the judges might fault you for it. A little change up goes a long way when it comes to drums. One more thing I'm thinking about on third listen is the intro. The guitar opens by doing a series of six chords / notes, and ti's not bad, bit if you think about it, it sounds really plain compared to the rest of the song. This section comes in again before the breakdown. I'd add some other notes in there to enhance it, or add some catchy solo type riff overtop of the intro section just to really catch the listener, because the chords themselves are not very catchy. I think once the synth comes in and you have the chords and a guitar run or rapid strumming going, it will really suck the listener in. Everything else is pretty much gold. I don't know if anyone has any other suggestions, but I say tinker around with the drums and intro section little more and SUBMIT this.
  13. First of all, this thread needs more love... I like the intensity with which you've attacked this piece. Aggressive guitar work, busy arrangement, quite fleshed out, lots of effort here. Some issues I'm hearing have to do with clarity. You have put a lot into the arrangement, but things sound somewhat muddy. Tere is a lot going on, but the mix still sounds empty. The issue is not the writing/arrangement; I think it has to do with the production. I'm hearing some crackling/peaks toward the middle of the song, I am not sure what is causing that. It's faint, but I'm definitely hearing it in the breakdown section toward the middle/end. I can hear the synth work you've done much more clearly in the second half, but I think you need to boost the perceived loudness of those synths to fill out the soundscape you have going hear and make sure they come through and convey the power this track is meant to. I'm not sure what guitar amps and pedals you're using, but is it possible to make the guitars sound harder? Maybe compress them and limit them to a certain wave range, and then use the synths to fill in the other areas so everything comes out more clearly? I've never mixed a power metal track, so I'm not sure how it would work... but I think the guitar theme needs to be clearer when it first comes in, it should really stand out above everything out. Maybe have a synth lead play the melody along with the guitar for added power? Lastly, I think you should look for some more drum samples, layer them on top of what you have and compress them in order to get a fuller sound, and mess with the velocities of the drum track so that the kicks aren't all at the same velocity and there's variety to the drumming. I usually check out freesound.org for samples of drums, snares, cymbals, etc, there's a lot of not-so-great recordings, but if you look hard enough you might find some decent cymbal sounds, because the ones you're using sound really hollow (though it could just be the way the sounds are mixed). Maybe the bass needs to come up a bit too to help fill things out. Also, more toms, especially toward the end with the race to the finish type section (for lack of a better term). Toms are epic, they make buildups and break downs worth doing, especially with a track that goes overkill on kicks and snare (which various genres of metal tends to do). Also, work those cowbells. Just kidding about the cowbells. Anyway, I'm really impressed with the energy and effort you've put into this remix, and personally, I think it sounds damn good, and I think it really captures the kill everything spirit of mega man in a very energetic, almost positive sounding power metal way Keep it up...
  14. Will do I think the drumbs should get more intense later in the song, like you're saying, maybe go wild a little bit, and make them stand out more... then go full tilt when the battle theme kicks in?? i also need to figure out what to do with the middle section. i'll try out some things tonight and hopefully have a decent update tomorrow.
  15. Update: I dropped in some drum / bass ideas in the beginning of the WIP. haven't figured out what I want the middle section drums and bass to sound like yet, so I've left those areas out. The drums that appear at the end were just dropped in, they're not final, I plan to make them, ahem, better... Still needs work of course, but I think it's starting to sound pretty cool...
  16. Wow, thanks for the positive feedback! Noted about the pulsing drums. I kind of agree with you there, and before I read your post I was planning to begin laying in some filtered drums, possibly making them sound a bit glitchy to see what it sounds like. Hopefully I'll have an update up soon
  17. Alright guys, I dropped in some fire chants! Thanks again to Yashafan for that... those chants sound frickin cool
  18. linkspast: About the ending, the track is supposed to keep going. My plan was for the mix to go into the Volvagia Fire Boss theme, but I'm wondering if maybe it will make the song too long. I just haven't figured out how to end it really... yashafan: the fire temple chanting would be great. I originally wanted to do that, but I was too lazy to go out and look for a high quality version of the original track. i'll think about what you said, about adding percussion and some bass. i'm not sure how it would work, but i'm open to the idea. i do feel like maybe just piano might not be enough, and it's definitely occurred to me that i should add some strings into the mix throughout. maybe instead of doing a volvagia piano climax, i could repeat the theme in a more fleshed out version with additional instrumentation. or could do volvagia with more instrumentation. anyway, thanks for listening and taking the time to comment
  19. ~Update 6~ I think this is pretty close to being final. There might be some tweaks to notes here and there once I do the mastering to try and boost the overall volume, but I plan to sit on this for another week or two, and if it still sounds good when I come back for another listen, I'm just going to submit it. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to listen and comment. ~Update 5~ I added two more verses to the song that are supposed to be something more like a climax before the chants come back. I haven't changed the ending so far, I haven't decided what I'm going to do. The two verses I just added are a little rough, but I'll make a few more passes when I figure out what I'm going to do about how the song is arranged, section-wise. I like the sections separately, but somehow they just don't work together at the moment. It might have to do with how different the textures are, in which case maybe some more accompaniment might be the solution. I also need to learn how to master properly, my work always comes out sounding much lower than it sounds when I'm mixing it. This track has way more effect with the volume cranked up. ~Update 4~ It's been awhile since I updated, so this is kind of a big change. I've added an entirely new section in the middle, it's kind of like a Link/Sheik duet section. I like the new material, but this is definitely not finished. It does, however, play around the with bolero theme a lot more and adds a new motif/melody or two, which I like. I also took out the fast piano section, since this middle section kind changed the direction of the song a bit, and placed the main piano theme at the end. Thought the time was right to update the thread and see what you guys think. New material @ 1:15. ~Update 2~ I dropped in some drum / bass ideas in the beginning of the WIP. haven't figured out what I want the middle section drums and bass to sound like yet, so I've left those areas out. The drums that appear at the end were just dropped in, they're not final, I plan to make them, ahem, better... Still needs work of course, but I think it's starting to sound pretty cool... ~Update 1~ Sampled and added fire chants Still have to finish the rest of the song though.. ~Original Post~ When we first started remixing, one of our goals was to do all the ocarina themes from OoT. This piano arrangement idea for bolero of fire has been around awhile, but I decided a few weeks ago to brush it off and flesh it out. There is going to be an ending section, though I haven't really begun working on it yet. I was kind of excited that this mix started to go somewhere, so I thought I'd ask if you guys were liking this. Looking for general feedback. I plan to sub this, so merciless criticism is welcomed and encouraged.
  20. This is sick. Full, exciting arrangement, and really solid production. Fantastic work all around...
  21. I didn't want to start a new thread for this question, since I also have a question about electric sounding drums. There's this track off an Anime OST called Kaiba that has a really cool 80s sound to its drum track, and I haven't been able to replicate it so far. Here's the track: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?wnvmlymwmzk Any ideas?
  22. Thanks! I removed the EQ on the piano samples, which I think that was the major problem. I was also browsing hammersound for awhile today, but I didn't find any samples that fit the feeling of the mix better than the current soundfont I'm using (though it's also from hammersound). If this gets rejected by the judges, I'll have to do a more extensive search and try to find some better samples, or maybe just ask someone to do the piano part like you said That would be really cool, actually. But if you have some sample recommendations, I'll definitely look into them, I'm still pretty new to production.
  23. ~Final Submission~ Thanks for all the help, guys. Here is the final submission: I'm deleting all the older WIPs.
  24. twoson ftw. it's nostalgic, yet funky. looking forward to updates
  25. Many thanks. I'll go fix those things tonight
