  1. Well, if you can give me a week or so to come up with something, I'll have incredible samples. Thanks to some good grades on my progress report, my mom's buying me Quantum Leap Silver, with me contributing my saved up fifty bucks. I found the demos of this sample thing to be incredible. However, I'm not sure if my computer will be able to handle it when it arrives.

But anyway, i know a lot of you will say that I'm stupid for buying samples, because anyone with good master abilities can make bad or free samples sound incredible, but I've really been dreaming of getting Quantum Leap Silver Orchestra. I'm really losing the electronic interest and I'm only really interested in doing orchestral music, so I guess this sorta justifies forking over 350 bucks.

You can take three weeks (from yesterday) if you like. But just know that if you're using non-free samples in your piece, it won't be considered for the mandatory soundfont set. All samples used for the actual mixing stage must be from the same free set.

Oh, and $350? Well, $300 of that is your mom's, so...that must've been one damn good progress report. :)

  2. You really want to replace the piano? There's already strings every where in there. It's really an integral part of the track. I could change it to something else, but it won't have the same effect.

The thing is, I'm very set on saving the piano exclusively for the ending theme, and if you could try something that worked as well as that (or even slightly less well) it would be a perfect piece. I understand if you don't want to...either way, you're still accepted. :)

  3. Veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery nice. I can clearly imagine this being in the opening to the CT movie, even though it's not finished. The use of your brass section is very impressive, especially near the end.

Just, uh, you know...finish it. And give us a visual. I'm sure you'll have no problem whatsoever with either of those things.

  4. Haha. Well I just posted those to own Piejacked, but I guess Blue Skies Over Guardia (the very last one, I think) is pretty evocative and self-explainatory. Just think about walking into Leene Square and seeing all of the amazing things that the fair has to offer, on a beautiful, cloudless day.

Holy crap. I think we just found our Millennial Fair piece remake. The only problem would be the piano-type thing in there, which could be replaced by strings quite easily. And you're right, it does explain its visual by itself. Otherwise, one track out of 25 has been already created.

This also means, DarkeSword, that you're accepted. Congratulations.

  5. Example:

0:00-0:34 -- the camera pans over the world of Chrono Trigger, as birds fly by and balloons lift off from the Millennial Fair. The many villages of the Zenan/Guardia peninsula are in full view. The music for this would be very relaxed, very calm.

0:35 -- the camera zooms quickly down into the plains of Guardia, a ground-level view. The music for this would be a fast arpeggio that transitions into a more upbeat section.

0:36-1:45 -- the camera zooms through the plains, passing over various features of the terrain as people are shown (intermittently) going about their daily lives, while credits continue. The music for this would be very fast-paced and powerful.

1:46-2:20 -- the camera goes into the sky again and takes another look around, watching the reflections of clouds in the water, looking over Guardia Castle. The music for this would be a cool-down, very soft and instrumental.

2:21-2:55 -- the camera would zoom over the water, under the bridge, delving into the ocean and then coming back up into the sky for a final look around. The music for this would be very upbeat once again.

2:56-3:00 -- the camera comes to Crono's room, positioning itself on the main character therein. The music for this would be the string section fading out, the closing for the opening cinematic.

That's an example of what I meant. Describe the cinematic, as well as time periods described.

  6. Oh, did I forget to mention, also, that collaboration pieces are allowed? Not in the audition stage, of course, but definitely in the mixing stage. Collaborations would be amazing.

What I mean by 'drumsets' is the typical drum setup that you'll see in any modern-day band. Several toms, cymbals, kickdrum, etc. etc. All of that is allowed. You can thank Destiny and zyko's amazing song "Into the Deep" for that particular addition.

Also, I used to own the Pirates of the Caribbean OST, but I've since lost it, and I'd like to know where Hans Zimmer used synths. That would be interesting to look at.

ALSO: DarkeSword, all of those orchestral pieces you listed...any of them quality enough to use as an audition piece? As long as you provide a visual, that'd be cool.

  7. Alright...I've given it a lot of thought, and I think I've finally made up my mind.

    DRUMSETS ARE ALLOWED.

My reasoning is that it'll be impossible to do a truly CT-style battle theme without the use of normal drums, and if one type of song can use it, why not the others?

Just be forewarned...the songs should not be drum-driven. Instrumentation is still incredibly important. So there.

  8. To answer your questions...

So the audition is a 3 minute write up of the main theme? Is it the same song as when you fight lavos?

Download the soundtrack, and it's the first and second songs on the OST, "Presentiment" and "Chrono Trigger". The soundtrack has a link in the first post.

Unfortunately, I don't have much extra space on ST.. and I can't really advertise there because it's rather dead while it's being redesigned. Sorry.

I wish I could work on this project, but I'm just not good enough.

Wow, double ouch. That's okay though...I'm sure if the project takes off, it wouldn't be too hard to find webspace. Thanks anyway.

Either way, I hope you watch what other people are doing, and keep involved (at least as a watcher) in the project. Your advice would be appreciated.

The musicians you have lined up so far will no doubt provide some very high quality stuff (see if you can get Jeremy Robson too, cause yeah, wow...)

Thank you for the kind words. But about the second part of your post...let's just say that Mr. Robson is indisposed when it comes to this project.

  9. I know when I'm beat. I have absolutely no artistic ideas, nor do I have any skill in writing this sort of thing. No promise whatsoever in what I currently have.

I'm truly sorry to hear that. I could still use somewhere to host the music files and also someplace to make an official website, if you have any extra room on the ST server. Also, I know you have teh madd connectionz with people on ST, so a bit of advertising would be a welcome addition, though I don't want to force you into anything.

  10. hm. I'm actually running into a lot of trouble here. As much as I'd like to do orchestral stuff, apparently I'm not quite ready yet - perhaps you should take me off the list.

No offense, but you've been working a maximum of three hours, probably closer to two. Perhaps you should give it a little time? You do have three weeks, you know.

A good suggestion would be to listen to other orchestral stuff similar to the style you want yours to be in, and take notes on the patterns of different instruments, and how they use them effectively. Fast, detache, higher-octave strings, or slower, drawn-out, lower ones? Fast brass or extended? Play by example would be my suggestion.

Just...please don't give up. I'm positive you can do something extraordinary. I mean, come on. You're zircon!

  11. ok claado... so you're post was really long and I read it fairly fast.... but are you actually planning on MAKING the movie? Cuz I didnt' see that part in there, but what good is a script and a soundtrack if you're not going to make the movie?

Also, did you say you TOOK OUT Ayla and Robo??? I hope I read that wrong... how do you just Take Out two Main characters??

    1. No, I do not plan on making the movie. I have expressed a hope that should these two aspects of the movie come together, somebody will be willing to help create the third, namely the visual. But for now, the OST and the script are the only two finished products we're shooting for.

    2. Yes, I took out Ayla and Robo. Along with them, I took out nearly an hour of unnecessary and confusing sidequests/backstory which would have drowned the movie with more than it needs. So know that my decision was well-thought-out, and the resulting product is not hurt, but instead is helped because of it.

  12. Only in Canada...

Anyway, I'd like to change one small thing about the audition guidelines...the pendulum sound in the beginning is not necessary. Rellik has made a point of the fact that it's really hard to find a good pendulum effect, and it's also kind of counterproductive to force something like that on every piece, when many of these will be standalone and not used in the movie soundtrack anywhere. So...that is not necessary. Do it if you like, but not because I'm forcing you to. :)

  13. I wish I could participate. Unfortunately, I lack the gear/software/money required to convincingly synthesize an orchestra.

There are plenty of free soundfont packages out there. If you have a desire to do something, I could recommend a few for starters. There's no reason money should be an obstacle.

  14. Sounds like a great idea, but I think you're making a mistake by excluding piano. Pianos are sometimes (I'll admit not frequently, but sometimes) used in movie soundtracks to spectacular effect.

Piano will not be excluded by any means. The ending theme, which will play during the credits, will have the main instrument be a piano. BECAUSE of its emotional effect, that would be an ideal instrument for that particular scene.

  15. ATTENTION - Since the forums have switched to the new vBulletin format, this is now the only thread related to Chrono Symphonic. So post here about comments or feedback, if you have any.

That's right, people. And you thought it was all just a myth.

  16. This song is nothing like anything on "The Last Samurai" soundtrack, I can guarantee you that, mv. I've listened to that ST well over a hundred times, and this reminds me so much more of the movie "Hero" (which was also scored by Tan Dun, the composer for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"). "Hero" has the single greatest soundtrack in the history of cinema (this I can guarantee you as well) and this sounds exactly like it. Congratulations.

  17. This song is almost magically flowing, perfectly combining violin, hard synth, breakbeat, and that piano bit in the middle that tears up the soundscape. Great work.

I have to say, though, that I preferred your work on "More Than A Weapon" to this particular remix. The vocals that you added from the game itself were immensely mood-enhancing, and they just make me want to, seriously, break out. So powerful. If you can, try and add more vocals to your songs. That would increase their power tenfold.

    SGX ownz.
