  1. Did you find it somewhere at a decent price? Because I've been thinking about getting into it but I'm not willing to pay like $100 for all the expansions and crap.

Wow had super discounts on the base game and first two expansions around Christmas that lowered the entire game so far to $20 ($5 for base, $5 for Burning Crusade, $10 for Wrath of the Lich King). Unfortunately, it looks like that's done. Oh, and Cataclysm hasn't really been on sale, since it just came out two months ago.

As for me, my Internet connection has been suckier than usual this week, and I have another appointment with a tech on Monday. Dunno how much I'll be on TF2 this weekend.

Basically, I lost patience with it on Steel when I lagged and died because of it, lag went away when I was respawning, then returned as soon as I left my spawn room.

In other words, I'd done absolutely nothing for the last 45 seconds, 30 of it against my will.

  2. WHARBLGARBL

According to the TF2 Wiki, they do in fact have unique stats. This is further supported by the blog, which states that the items will get crafting recipes once the promo ends. (No point in making them universally available if they're just reskins.)

Sun on a Stick does +35% damage, but -45% if the target isn't on fire.

Sharpened Volcano Fragment ignites on hit, but does -20% damage.

Yeah, I edited my post to add in the crafting comment before you replied.

  3. I've heard conflicting reports that the promo items are identical to the Axetinguisher and Boston Basher and that they have unique stats. I really hope the former is the case.

I doubt it has unique stats, as that goes against Valve's promo item design philosophy.

Edit: Maybe not... according to the TF2 official group: "The Sharpened Volcano Fragment and the Sun-on-a-Stick will be obtainable through crafting after the Rift pre-order period ends."

    Also promotional achievement lolwut.

Anyone can earn it, it's a standard General achievement, but it unlocks a hat in Rift via a promo code.

  4. http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Sharpened_Volcano_Fragment

So they made a promotional item that, if I'm not mistaken, has unique attributes that you can't get normally.

Actually, according to that page, it's identical to the Axtinguisher.

    Speaking of which:

  5. An idea just occurred to me: How long do you guys expect it to be until Frogg reclaims the #1 spot in the stats?

Not long, seeing as how he's already second. Of course, right now I'm first... but I doubt that'll remain... I just had some REALLY good rounds as Spy yesterday.

Anyway, the stats page is currently having trouble resolving what countries people are from. I'm going to try to find out why that is.

Edit: It was missing a geolocation file. I think it's fixed now, but it doesn't look like it'll correct the current entries.

Edit 2: OK, this time I really think I've got it fixed, but it won't fix old data. Granted, we only really have data from yesterday, so no big loss.

I also took the time to bump up the award for deploying an Ubercharge from 1 point to 5 points.

Edit 3: Turns out your flag will be fixed the first time you log in.

  6. I traded my Circling Heart mask for a Confetti Mask plus a boatload of metal.

Looks kinda funny now with both.

Now, I just wonder if I should craft the metal into new hats or just save it towards another unusual... I mean, I'm sitting on like 16 refined metal now.

  7. Since Bark was nice enough to bump this for me while I was editing my last post, I'll repost what I was editing in:

I've also done a nasty, hackish type thing to make it so that the server always displays a max player count of 24. This is due to TF2 not counting bots as players on the server, yet increasing the max player count when SourceTV's bot is enabled.

TL;DR Max slot count was off by one, it's fixed now.

NOTE to reserved slot holders: This means you must now use the console to connect to a full server! For example:

    connect blu.ocrtf2.com

  8. A quick search on TF2 Trade Post seems to put its price pretty low. At the highest end I saw people requesting a hat for a pan and the lowest price I saw was 2 scrap metal. You could probably grab one pretty cheap.

That's not a surprise... a lot of people have Left 4 Dead 2.

  9. One of these days I need to trade around to get the earbuds.

Speaking as someone who bought an extra set and tried to buy a second... it takes a lot of good hats to do it unless you find someone who doesn't know their value. It's the reason I no longer have my v. Procedure Mask or v. Whiskered Gentleman.

  10. Whew, I have a Hustler's Hallmark again. It felt strange having only a crappy hat for Demo following my unusual trades.

I was able to clear out a few of my unwanted hats for it, too!

Of course, my old Hallmark was vintage, whereas this one isn't, but that doesn't really matter to me.

Also, Bark, if you're reading this, I didn't mean to ignore you yesterday, I was busy when you sent that and then I accidentally closed my Steam PMs window... I keep forgetting that it's a tabbed window.

  11. ...

That just reinforces my opinion that unusuals aren't worth the hype.

Well, these ARE rather low-tier unusuals.

And figures, now that I have the two I currently have, someone offers me a Purple Energy Le Party Phantom for my Max Set + Earbuds... I could almost cry. (Max Set and multiple earbuds were involved in getting the two I have now.)

(Having said that, a pair of unusuals are worth more than a single one, no matter how good it is.)

  12. So yeah, this is what my Spy currently looks like:

    spy_dual_unusual.png

It looks kind of goofy, but that's both an Unusual Le Party Phantom with Circling Heart and Unusual Fancy Fedora with Circling Peace sign.

I should probably turn on anti-aliasing if I'm taking screenshots... whoops.

Edit: Sorry about the lighting, this was in cp_frontier's third BLU spawn room, which has bad lighting in it.

  13. Heavies are also very vulnerable to really twitchy Scouts, as well as any Soldier who can actually aim rockets instead of walking into point blank range and firing at his feet.

I will agree that Heavies are overpowered on the offensive side of Payload maps, though.

Whoops, I meant to mention Scouts in my last post... guess I forgot to go back and edit the Heavy part before posting.

  14. Alternately, when the enemy team has no less than 3 Pyros, all bent on Spychecking each other, their teammates, and thin air. Also random hits from the Flare Gun while cloaked. And general bad luck. And then dying and seeing the enemy Spy backstab half the defense, or see an allied Spy get a chainstab in the kill icons and rage not-so-silently that it seems the universe has it in for a particular Spy today and guess what? It's me.

    Sometimes it's just bad luck.

Sometimes it's because the other team only thinks there's one Spy on your team, and they stop Spy Checking once they know you're dead.

Sometimes it's because certain loadouts work better in certain situations. I don't know about you, but I'm constantly adjusting my loadout as Spy to take into account how the enemy is playing and what isn't working.

It never bothers me, vent away. Sometimes a poor round as Spy has its source in a poor core team. A support class performs poorly when there is no team to support it. If other classes are not doing their job then this makes it harder to play proper Spy.

Some of my best rounds have been when my team was overall doing poorly... mainly because the other team's not expecting it.

I'll point you to the round in pl_upwards the other day... the one where you were playing Medic and I got 13 backstabs (or was it 12...) in a single life. My team was losing badly on that one.

I seem to recall you using the phase "Carry your whole team why don't you?" or something to that effect.

the single most infuriating thing in TF2 (other than the Black Box) is getting killed while cloaked by a stray Huntsman arrow

(You misspelled Direct Hit.) But yeah, Huntsman arrows from nowhere suck.

Dick the moves the moves dick you.

What bothers me is when I got laughed at for calling Heavy overpowered. Sorry guys, when a class can out damage most other classes while maintaining the most health (even more so with a Medic) and not going through any downtime in the process (Rockets/Pipes/shotguns all have to be reloaded) then the class is overpowered. When a Pyro has an 80% fail rate against a Heavy he snuck up on and got into close range with, its overpowered.

Having a weakness two things - sniper bullets and Demoman sticky bombs - does not make a class balanced. Frogg has proven time and time again that the class can be played with a lot of skill and mop the floor with everyone, but lately I stopped admiring his and any other Heavy players "skill" because thats not what it is anymore. It's playing a class with a blatant advantage over almost every other class in the game. The same could be said about Scout, my main, except that Scouts can die just like that.

Scouts have to be aware of their surroundings and the situation they are going into, which is also what Heavies -used- to have to do.

Maybe the weakness is that the class is easily overpowered by a dedicated, organized team, but I'm not sure as I have very little experience in that field of play.

As a Pyro, I've found that the flamethrower + Axtiguisher works a LOT better than just a plain flamethrower against a Heavy. A Heavy with a Medic is a bit harder, but that's also 2 on 1.

On an un-overhealed Heavy, flame once, Axtinguish twice will kill them.

Heavies are also extremely vulnerable to Spies. While Frogg is usually good about Spy checking, I've seen him screw up quite a few times... and certain maps allow you to drop down from above to stab.

  15. If anyone's giving away free crates, I'll take them. ;)

Also, a reminder: If there are no objections to stats reset by the end of Saturday, I'll be taking time on Sunday to reset them.

I'll make sure to copy our current per-server settings, since I've forgotten how to make it not show the score thingies otherwise.

    Edit:

Updates to Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The major changes include:

    Source Engine Changes (CS:S, DoD:S, TF2, HL2:DM)

Improved engine handling of server queries

This is a minor update, but servers have been restarted because it modified an engine file.

  16. Oh hey, have we taken down the Highlander server yet?

I was told in the past to leave it up for atmuh's team, despite me never seeing them use it.

If not, I move to turn it into some sort of event server / special mods server. For example, I've been itching to try this one out. http://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?p=1397829 It's the TF2 WarioWare mod and looks like a hoot and a half!

Edit: Either that or the "Advanced Weaponizer" mod. That looks cool, too. Or the Saxton Hale mod.

Unless you schedule some special event on it, it will likely remain empty.

Speaking of which, I keep an extra up-to-date copy of the server around for events.
