OCR01857 - *YES* Final Fantasy 6 'Vision of Celes' *RESUB*
zykO replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
i thought this was wonderful throughout until the flat crescendo at 2:15. where is the power? why did you pull the plug on it at THATn particular moment when you're building up? you've got the right idea with all that bright brass afterwards but the piece is pretty flat behind it the arrangement is great and most effective when it is subtle and soft. it is emotive and moving. the later part when it is epic, the brass carries it because of its liveliness but its dissappointing how soft everything behind ti sounds at that point. haha who would have thought i'd be the only one agreeing with zircon on EQ but this thing has no bass at all and just because it's orchestral doesn't mean it doesn't deserve the BUMP. i must say though, technical things aside, this is a very effective piece. it sounds to me like a score to a mafia film. something serious like a godfather but not quite as epic. something more akin to raging bull. the point is that it sounds great as a work of art even if i'm irked by the timidness of the crescendo WHAPs that you fumbled a couple times at the end. i think this is a yes for sure but i am forced to call for a resub because i think the strings in the end should definetly have more presence and power to be consistent with what you're writing. this thing is ridiculously close. it is truly gorgeous. just fix the freakin EQ. nO (resub) -
OCR01681 - *YES* Legend of Zelda 3 'Lost Dark World'
zykO replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
interesting. on one hand, i hear an amazing sounding mix... the instruments are beautiful, they're mixed well together, they are clearly arranged by a knowing orchestrator and its zelda for crying out loud, so its great. however, i'm confused by some of the, at times, unnecessary arrangement. i'm surprised nobody has commented on it. there is a lot of what i can simply call "overarrangement" (see: in and around the 3 minute mark). i'm not one to criticize artistic vision or creative discretion but it gets beffudled at times and distracting and i think it ought to be worth noting. luckily for the piece and for long dao... its zelda and it sounds very nice. the transitions are great (especially later on around the 5 min mark). the intro was engaging and pulled you in and the ending was epic and ushers you out in style even if a bit loud. all in all, this is a solid work of videogame homage. OCR01664 - *YES* Guilty Gear X 'Alpha Blade' *FT*

i love it. this could have been a track on "in the dark" - the trademark drive, energy and tenacity of a beatdrop groove... menacing synths, all sorts of weird breaks, changes, twists. and its loud... just how i like it. i jogged for months to in the dark in my ears because it is such powerful energy musik. this is no exception YES -
oh this is bad as hell this is the third track i've done since gettin back in town and jesus, i'm blown away... and this just might be my favorite so far. yoshi's island is a very underappreciated soundtrack. i had the pleasure of arranging the title song... this was one i wanted to tackle at some point but funny... i wanted it to sound somethin like this... then heard mcvaffe's and tucked my tail and ran... i see that you were not intimidated; good man and i think we're all glad for it. the instrument choice is on point - you got a gnarly lead synth that sorta bounces throughout the track as it moves forward. the panning on the answer synth touches down very nicely in the track... its funky. the bass nips at your ankles and the drums bite at your knees. i was feelin this groove as soon as it hit - great work with the hats. the arrangement is killer. it is constantly becoming fresh as it progresses and is entertaining throughout. you pulled the track away and out of its groove at the right point, built a nice suspense, built it up and slammed the listener into the cave floor with an amped rendition. YES

this has its problems still but i love it. i'll be negative first so i can gush all over it till i bust my YES. none of these instruments sound like they're on the same planet, let alone the same room. it can be irritating at times in parts of creative panning and effects. i'm all for ambient weird guitar shit duh but when the guitar tone is so thin compared to the rest of the orchestration, it sounds like you don't know how to mix an organic instrument in with electronic ones. that's something that can be fixed. there's some incredible guitar playing here that gets lost in the mix... literally. the drums are also nearly nonexistent in parts where it is very needed. but this arrangement is amazing. the actual writing of it is fantastic... there is all sorts of emotive dynamic even despite it being essentially one gear through out once it gets going. the intro was badass. the guitar playing is off the charts cool... you rock, girl. the stuff behind her guitar is magnificent, joker - great writing and instrumental balance. i cannot ramp up any more than this without having a conniption YES
-
i'm gonna go as far as to say that it's soaked. drenched to its neck in unidentifiable liquid... it does drive very hard, though and i like its energy a lot. but ultimately it's trance, it's typical for trance and it will be entertaining to fans of trance. the bottom line here i think is that while it does only run at one speed, is douzed in reverb, and is loaded with trance filler (sweeps and arepeggios and standard synths)... it also sounds like it was made by someone with a sure hand, it does not have any glaring errors and will be perfect for people looking for this music. the truth is, the beauty of videogame remixing is that it is of all genres and while we have a ton of this exact thing littered throughout our library, it doesn't mean we can't release a freshly baked incarnation of it. it will still have it's fans in throngs throughout our expanisve listening audience. OCR01695 - *YES* Final Fantasy 6 'Keep Out the Veldt'
zykO replied to zykO's topic in Judges Decisions
hey good lookin on the comments i just barely got my computer back after nearly a month out of commission and i've been intending on fixing the track up and resubmitting (contrary to my common practice of doin no such thing). honestly, this is the first time i've made my own traditional hip hop beat so a lot of things were new territory for me i'll be working out the kinks and getting back to y'all so hold off on the judgement for a second until i can resubmit. thanks for the feedback. i probably won't be able to access the internet from home for a little while longer but i'll be back. thanks! -
HAHA xeroxing a mirror. i'm going to have to bribe jjt to the rights to said name as it has to title my next song. nobody should miss these things. fun as fuck despite not remembering the goldschlager stage, at all. who knows, had i not participated in that gut-tumbling god discussion, i might have avoided my eventual fate. or not. but fun as all hell, this was and i wasn' even stoned!!

well let's see here: one of my favorite themes from one of my favorite games ever by some of my favorite musicians. homerun. -
anything that'll get me twisted i'll try to swing through... i am only really free on saturdays anyways as i have my daughter on sundays so my weekends are always grey areas either way, i'll respond to the evite and we'll figure it out from there.. ====== damn, i noticed a lot of cats from sac by and by. good shit - south sac 916 in the hizzouse... born n raised, my lil niggaroniez

i heard this a long time ago while it was still in its infancy. prot's birdcussion was one of my favorite mixes from back in the day and i used to jam out to it all the time... i never really liked to get down to the original source but for some reason its remixes make me horny. this is no different. i really dig the groove. the bassline has that funky jazz drive to it. the transitions are gentle and never get boring. the lead chip is badass... when you get original with the vibes around 2.45, it is very refreshing. i love the instrumentation and orchestration of the track. however, as detractions go, the pads can be grating at time although i think that is a grounds for a resub and fixing those pads. i'm usually all about weird, tense, annoying pads but they go on for the whole track and kinda kill it. and kudos on 3.30 and on. so basically, address the pads and you've got a winner resub
-
haha nice this definetly had potential then it sorta sputtered away. there was nothing supporting your guitar. you should flesh the arrangement out more. i'm very familiar with this theme and i can assure you there are a million things you can do with it... that's one of its intrinsic beauties. you limited yourself stylistically with your arrangement aside from that, you have to tone down the recording of your guitar. it is ridiculously loud during the bridge parts. the rhythmic idea that you got goin on is badass but you're lacking in developement... let the guitar change a bit. the lead is static and lacks variation... it sorta just follows the staccato of the rhythm guitar and doesn't venture past that. this track has a ton of potential and so do you. the surehand with mastering and maintaining your volumes will come to you with practice and constant tinkering... work on your arrangement first and put together something more substantial... maybe add some bass and drums, maybe another instrument. some ambience. use your imagination. but for now, this is not going to make it. redo this puppy and blow our faces off. OCR01625 - *YES* Syberia 'To the Land of the Great Mammoths'
zykO replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
i took notice of this mix on two distinct angles: the first is in terms of purpose, mood. it definetly is very expressive as a orchestral poem... it tells a story and is versatile in doing so by using a lot of different instruments and dynamic elements. from this angle, the track looks fantastic. the mix does not look so fantastic from the angle of its execution. you managed to stuff a lot of things right smack in the middle of the spectrum and it gets really mushy in there. you also left some instruments bare and exposed that you probably shouldn't have... like the cello at the front. like zircon mentioned, you use crashes as your transitions too often. i'm not saying that it isn't stylistically great... i'm just saying that beating us to death with the crash cymbal is an awfully tinny way to die. vary it up a bit... it makes your piece sound cookie cutter when it isn't. this is definetly in need of a resubmit. clean it up a bit and send it our way, again NOresubmit -
oh yum. and oh yuck. this is wicked cool. this is hot as shit. it deserves every bit of love i gush over it because it is smooth, funky and creative. i can smell dj shadow all over this. at the same time, i smell skrypnyk, too. this is wicked cool. i've been playing around with turntables a lot lately and i've been made a believer in their interpretative, creative quality - this is, simply, sex to my ears. yuck because this is a mess to judge. the notorious "ties" in question here are debatable... i can sorta hear it too but this is an awful distinction to have to make. it sucks to judge it, too because the original stuff here is off the charts. but unfortunately so is the arrangement. site fundamentals are at play in this thread's discussion and while i am in love with this piece of music, i cannot pass it. it is what it is. and isn't. NO this is, however, permanently in my playlist
-
hmm. this has come a long way, no doubt... but it still falls short. i think the major detraction here is how unnecessarily simplified its become. true, you've cleaned up your production a bit and it is far less grating on the ears but its arrangement is pretty void of expansion. there are points where it feels expansive in my ears but doesn't sustain the attention much. i did really like the break and transition coming into the second minute but unfortunately it was like a gem surrounded by hay. this is still about one resub away. this time, address the meat of your track... make sure it is interesting from start to finish... while being short for its genre like pixie said, it still feels like its too long which is always a bad sign. *NO* Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 'Book of the Dead'
zykO replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
**removes cobwebs, cracks knuckles** book of the dead, huh? very cool. this mix is very cool. i see what some of the common complaints have been... at times it seems overcompressed and brittle... but this is very effective very nice combination of style and timbre. on one hand, you got this blazing, electronic groove with syncopated synths mixed in with some ethnic lead-work and percussion (2.30 - 3.30) despite not being particularly egyptian (it is more indian, really). the chanting is so badass, it almost single handedly makes this arrangement cooler than shit. the synth violin playing during that section is a very nice touch i can recognize the zelda in there but it is very drowned out with your interpretative original contributions. as for concept, its a homerun. perhaps, i'm biased... on one hand, i am both egyptian and a zelda fanatic. on the other, i had a very similar vision with a recent track of mine titled "Ancient Hylia" done as though Ancient Hylia was much like Ancient Egypt. its funny how twilight princess also portrays ancient hylia as such. i still think that its a surefire concept on its own merit, though for a debut, you'ev knocked my face off. like vig mentioned, it isn't perfect and the overall dynamic is too static and without that break at 2.30, you'd have been in trouble. however, this scores big in other ares and as far as i'm concerned, this is good to go. YES -
po, if you make it out there, lemme know cuz i'll roll too

really? i'd say that sounds like a grand idea!

that's funny that you'd call me dense. right at least you gave Venom props. good lookin' i don't take offense to your point on using the word "nigga" but the debate isn't likely to ever end. i agree with you as a matter of principle; the word is derived from a racial slur and, fundamentally speaking, should not be used. however, i rap as i speak and that is how i speak. chamillionaire and russell simmons and al sharpton can say whatever they want about how it ought to be different but as long as niggas are still calling each other niggas out here on the street, i will continue to express myself as truly and genuinely as i can. perhaps, it is in bad taste but oddly enough, niether you nor i are the judge of that. at least i'm doing and saying what comes natural and am not forcing anything and that is a lot more than what a lot of emcees can say about themselves with their chain-swaying, collar-poppin, wannabe thug status. what you and every other bitch out there that keeps attacking my track is REALLY trying to say is that i can't spit. its pretty unlikely that y'all have a serious problem with the word because it is too widespread in the genre and a lot of you are clearly very familiar and likewise fans (at least to some degree) of the genre so i'm not buying your bullshit. what this is really about is y'all questioning my ability to spit (or my credibility to say "nigga" due to my skin color). which is fine, whatever. niggaz 4 life was recorded nearly 5 years ago and was really one of my earliest attempts at recorded rap and definetly the first to attract any substantial attention. so as debuts go, i think i killed most of you clowns there. so you can call me dense. you can even question my game (though grossly stupid to do so). ultimately i'm the one having the last laugh cuz even if you can bring it on a mic... that's probably where the train stops for you ============= how much longer will this go, anyhow? why doesnt somebody actually grow the balls to drop something in response instead? expression through art. that is what this is all about. don't hide behind your carefully worded forum rants spit it. show your mettle. let's have some REAL conversation instead of this watercooler, bitch talk.
