Instrumental & Vocal Skills (Other)

  1. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 'Sonik Azure' Interesting guitar panning here. Guitar's a bit out of tune, but the rest of the stuff sounds good. High quality samples, sequencing is solid. Nice effects on the Rez/Cut. Hmm... this song kind of makes me happy. Yum. Edit: I finished writing this before finishing the song. I really like the ending. It's clever and cute and splicing vinyl noise into a song is almost never a bad thing. Also you gotta love the happy hip-hop feel the whole song has. Nice work. DC
  2. Double Dragon 'Hammer's Garage' Sweet, Neostorm, this just kicks. Wah organ madness, and a beautiful array of other instruments. I especially love that whole organ solo thing at the end. I'm trying to think of anything I could possibly compare this to, but it's just not happening. I don't think I've heard anything using instruments like these before in my life. Excellent work, Neostorm, very unique.
  3. Sonic the Hedgehog 'Love Hurts' Again, the download system is broken as I write this, but I wanted to get the review system working for the mix. but it's by djp, so it's gotta be good, right? I'll edit this with an actual review once I get to hear the mix. Edit: OK, now that I've had a chance to listen, I must say I really like this one. For all djp's strength at upbeat action-music-gone-technofunk style, I think his real brilliance lies in more subdued songs, and this mix of his id definitely one of those songs. Love the disco-esqueness here, as it's something we don't see too often on this site. If I were you, I would stop reading right here and download it.
  4. Chrono Trigger 'Team Gato' One of the more fun mixes on OC. This mix has some really good music throughout, in varying styles, but the focus is on the dialog going on. It's quite humourous, I suggest it if you want a laugh and not a serious song. That would be my only qualm actually, while the mix is great for the humour aspect, I really liked the first variation of the theme and would have loved to hear a full mix of that style, sans vocals. Definitely suggested.
  5. Shinobi 'Shin Shuriken Jam' This has got to be my favorite of djp's early efforts. I like what he has done here. This is based off of the first stage music in the Sega Master System version of the game. Something to keep in mind is that EVERY SINGLE STAGE in the game had this exact same music, so djp could have easily called it "Shinobi - Last Stage" and it still would have worked (the arcade and PC Engine versions featured about 4 different themes, the arcade had completely different 1st stage music, which Rayza has arranged). This tune is featured in level 1-2 in the arcade... that's the stage with the pictures of Marilyn Monroe hanging on the brick wall. djp takes the theme and makes it jam. It doesn't follow the tune note for note, as he takes the time to make sure he adds just enough funk between the familiar notes. If you have played the game then you need to download this tune. And since you are reading this then you must have at least a moderate interest. Start downloading if you haven't already!
