Just a question for those of you who play an instrument as well.

On average, how many takes would you say it takes you before you get the recording you're happiest with? The one where everything is the best you think you can play it.

For rhythm stuff, 1-2. Leads, usually anywhere from 3-10. Same with vocal takes.

Sax, maybe 8-10 times, and lately for co-op work I've taking to splicing different takes together or just re-recording over specific sections, so no need to record the "perfect" take. For personal stuff, I pick the best take out of the 8-10 times and live with those mistakes.

Sometimes 1, sometimes 15. I've never averaged it.

yeah, pretty much. sometimes one take, sometimes two or three. once, it took me around 50 takes to get a solo down because i didnt want to punch in or edit the take
