I think it's pretty decent, personally... - djp

1st RESUB Decision: http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=67177

Remix: Koelsch1

Game: Jurrasic Park

Name: Concerto for Velociraptor

I think I finally have it ready. And if not, this will be my last resubmit of this song. I dont know how to make it sound any better than it currently is. This hiss is gone and the reverb is fixed.

I watched Jurrasic Park a few days ago on tv. The raptors where pathetic.

That spielberg fool doesnt know what he is doing. The raptors would have eaten thos children in like 3 seconds. None of that standing around and running into mirrors bullshit. Sometimes I wish a raptor would come back to life and eat Larry Oji. That will learn him a thing or two. He is such a greedy man, keeping all the "Larry Oil"™ to himself rather than marketing it to the public.

No, thats not a typo. Thats just the way he talks.

Ok, its finished uploading...

I somewhat agree with Koelsch that this is the best he can get it to sound, but it's still a NO go. Higher frequencies are still gone and the atmosphere now sounds incredibly dry, especially detrimental to the sampled instrumentation. There's still light but noticeable hiss here on my headphones. Couldn't you have de-essed the first version or something? (Prot: "Learn to de-ess.") Your initial setup being so bad in the first place ultimately messed this up. Sorry man, it's certainly not for a lack of liking the arrangement.

Without the reverb on it, this just sounds all dry and bland now. It actually sounds less realistic than the last attempts.

It's a real shame about the production issues with the piece, 'cause the playing and the overall arrangement is very enjoyable to listen to. My last vote was a yes, but with the way this sounds now it's pushed my borderline yes into a no.

Sorry Koelsch, I think it'd be beneficial for the people of OCR to hear this piece though, since it is enjoyable. Maybe we could leave the link up.

Good luck with future mixes, make sure to get a good initial recording so it doesn't stuff things up down the line next time.

I'll go out on a limb and say YES on this one.

The production is not bad. The hiss is barely noticeable, and i think it's perfectly within the acceptable range. As for the complaint that there is a lack in the high-end...frankly i dont think a track needs to have completely even EQ response to sound good, and i think demanding completely flat winamp levels is ridiculous. I wonder if you would have mentioned that if you had listened to the track with your eyes closed. The strings dont sound terribly real, but they dont sound bad, and they are certainly listenable. The overall level of the track is fairly low.

The arrangement is good. Creative and effective. The performance also shows considerable progress. there are still a couple places that make me cringe, but koelsh's playing has come a long way from his earlier submissions.

I wouldnt call the production "strong," but it's certainly adequate, and the arrangement pushes it over the edge.

I agree with Jesse that the eq alone shouldn't make this a no. It wasn't enough to really alter my listening experience.

Although this is a pretty big improvement from k1's other submissions, this remix is borderline.

A good performance and a good arrangement, but I just can't handle the quality of the string samples.

They sound painfully GM, and are extremely dry and exposed.

Part of me wants to give this a YES, but due to how integral the strings are to the arrangement I just don't feel right about passing it.

You're getting better koelsch, but you're not quite there.

Oh, and the volume level was way too low.

I don't agree with the EQ remarks first and foremost. It's much too complex a topic to touch on here, but as Vigilante said, to expect completely even EQ response, within an inaccurate tool like winamp anyway, for acoustic music is not a prudent thing to do. There are plenty of acoustic material and orchestral music that have very little activity in the treble regions. So in this case I think it falls on our ears and our gear to make such determinations. In my case, I feel there is some EQ work that could be done, particularly in the 5-8k and 10-16k ranges - but to me these are very minor issues anyway. In this context, I think it's fine.

I also feel the strings are pretty good. This is far better than GM quality stuff. This sounds pretty much like the best one can get out of free soundfonts, and it's used very well as well. I personally would have used more reverb on the strings though, the pizz's for example are really thin and dry. Intimacy is so important to this type of mix, so you don't want to overdo the reverb, but the pizz is a great example of why it's so dry and thin here and could benefit from minor processing.

Speaking of dry, the whole mix is dry. There's very little dimension due to a lack of space and placement with the lack of reverb or delays.

Arrangement and performance are very strong. Koelsch has been listening to our advice and/or continuing to try to get better. His progress is a leap forward and in total, I think definitely passable material.

I'm torn, I think this could benefit from a tweaking with a little more reverb, but on the other hand one has to wonder where the personal line is. Though, ultimately, I doubt this would pass in its current state, but I'm rewarding Koeslch for a job well done and continuing his hard work with a passable mark.

Edit:

I've been torn about this since my previous vote. Given that I was borderline...now I'd like to see a few tweaks here and there to address not only the concerns I laid out, but the concers of other judges. There needs to be some reverb and/or delays here to bring the instruments to life and give dimension to the mix. Intimacy is key, but so is dimension. I warn you not to overdo it though, or the mix could get messy or too mudy for this nature of the mix. Do the quick edit and change most of our votes to YES. Please resubmit. NO for now, but hopefully not for long.
