This is madness! I got a laptop back from the repair service after a hard drive crash, and now it's got Windows XP service pack 1 on it.

I tried to download service pack 2 but only reached this page:http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/thanks.aspx?ln=en&&thankspage=5 which tells me I need IE5. I have IE6. Wtf?

It also tells you you can get it from here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=10678 But I can't find the actual service pack 2 there, only a very large number of upgrades for it! I'm in a catch 22 here. Help...

When you went to get this update, were you actually browsing in IE, or were you using FireFox? I just gave it a whirl in FireFox, and got the same page. However, with IE, I went right to the MS update page.

Try going there and getting it using IE.

Edit: http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.html

You can try there as well. Just be patient, as it takes a bit for the server to connect and ready the DL. Make sure you at least temporarily allow the site in No Script if you have that program.

You should be getting sp2 through windows update at the very least, makes a guy wonder if its being done right to begin with.

I got the computer back from repairs and windows update is active. It's not reporting any available updates. What are you suggesting I'm doing wrong?
