OCR01623 - Final Fantasy VII "Black Wing Metamorphosis"
ForumChibi replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I can definitely agree that this song didn't last long enough. But I've never really been a big fan of the One Winged Angel theme so I'm probably not familiar with it enough to really compare, yet I liked this one well enough. The vocals were well done, I saw a post somewhere that said they seemed incorrect, but since I don't speak Latin I thought it was great. -

This is one of my favorites from the set, I'm actually listening to it now (it's stuck on replay since I'm too busy reviewing all of these to change it, LOL). I'm not sure how to describe it, I'm very pleased that I can distinguish Tifa's theme from this quite well, and I like the speed, feel, and rhythm it has. Excellent work. -
OCR01616 - Final Fantasy VII "Valse Aeris"
ForumChibi replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I enjoyed this one a lot, it's definitely one of my favorites. I liked the way that the notes in Aeris' theme were rushed at various speeds since it gave the song more originality when the original had already been replayed a million times over the past 10 years. -
OCR01612 - Final Fantasy VII "Deliverance of the Heart"
ForumChibi replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'd never listened to Pixietricks' vocals before, I was VERY impressed by them. It was a nice relaxing blend of themes, I was very satisfied listening to this as the first track in the set. -
OCRA-0009 - Final Fantasy VII: Voices of the Lifestream
ForumChibi replied to zircon's topic in Album Reviews & Comments
You guys said it took more than a year to put all this together... it definitely shows. While I don't necessarily like each track in relation to the original, each song on it's own is wonderful. There were many songs that I had difficulty hearing or feeling the original song, or only caught it for a brief window out of the whole piece, but I think what was more important was that I could clearly see the remixer's interpretation and personality in all of them. Even the tracks that I didn't like from the original game or the ones that fell into genres that I don't particularly care for I could still appreciate the emotions and quality from the composers. In retrospect, the only things I didn't enjoy as much were that I do agree there were a few too many techno tracks, and also, it seems like almost every song has a really long intro which cut the songs down quite a bit. Some of the songs were only 3 minutes long to begin with, so with a 1 minute intro of beats before we actually heard the original theme made a lot of them too short to truly enjoy and left me wanting more. It's hard to pick a favorite, though the vocals were superb, and Deliverance of the Heart was an obvious good choice as the first track in the set. Kudos to everyone on their hard work - it was well worth the effort. -
OCR01404 - Secret of Mana "Dragon Song"

At first I got myself psyched up - a friend referred me to this song, I saw the reviews, I read DJPretzel's comments, then I listened to the song. The first time through I was unimpressed. I was expecting something else by that time. So I played it again, listening to the parts people were pointing out, still not really that impressed. So I walked away... but for some reason, I really wanted to hear it again. I probably played it twenty times in a row before my housemate went insane, not knowing what exactly it was I was listening to. The song really does speak for itself in the end. It's mysterious, unexplainably alluring, deep, and to sum it all up in one word, beautiful. The vocals are calming, yet intense, and overall SO well done - looking back on it, a female vocalist would've ruined the song entirely. Even as a long-ago huge SoM fan, I can't quite recall which song this is remixed from, but I don't even care, because it's just that amazing. Some parts I can pick out, especially the piano, which is just incredible. There's a reason why people rave about this song, I'm glad I was also able not just to find, but to feel what that reason was. And for the record, I also pronounce it, Flam-E. -
OCR00171 - Chrono Cross "Another Inspiration"
ForumChibi replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The vocals in the new remix just creeped me out actually when I first heard them. The song itself became less sorrowful and more creepy in general, especially at the end. I'm not actually even sure what the vocals are saying. It sounds like "Got inspiration?", like a 'Got Milk?' commercial... or "God inspiration", which doesn't even make sense to me. I would've been satisfied with the song without them. I love the original, I used to listen to it all the time. Unfortunately, the problem I had with the original is that once when I was listening I turned my speakers up with my mom in the house thinking she might like to hear it, and I suddenly became very aware of the overly loud 'clap' between the measures that starts up at 1:53 until 3:20, right in the middle of the song. It starts great, it builds up, and suddenly it just pounds in your ears 'crack!', over and over, until it cools down toward the end. It'll probably still always be one of my favorite songs though, just wish that particular beat wasn't as forceful in the middle. -

This is a very nice relaxing piece. I don't have much else to say about it right now since I just woke up and it's putting me back to sleep, lol! -
OCR00316 - Final Fantasy VIII "Eyes on Me (Obsession)"
ForumChibi replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I guess that's why I don't like it, because I don't "get" the point, whatever it may be. When I first heard it, I didn't know what it was for a while, so I'm listening to it trying to figure it out, and I didn't really care for the way it sounded to begin with. Then I hear this voice which freaked me out/annoyed me so much that I tossed my headphones away @_@;;, and THEN I get the wake up call, "Oh, it's Eyes on Me..." except I can't understand it at this point, because I'm saying to myself, "WTH? This is Eyes on Me???" I guess I'm just too much of a fan of the original, whether that's a good thing or not when you're listening to remixes, I dunno. This one just didn't click for me. -
OCR00264 - Final Fantasy VIII "Eyes on Me (Not Faye Wong)"
ForumChibi replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I didn't like this as much as the original. The vocals were beautiful, maybe more so that Faye Wong, but unfortunately I couldn't hear them. They were drowned out by the overly loud thud-thud-thud beat. It was as if the artist wasn't sure whether he should place emphasis on the song or the vocals, and made the two equally quiet while keeping the beat the most noticeable aspect. In some ways it seems like the song was rushed and left half-complete without playing around with the volume. I was also only partially interested in the fast beat because the vocals sounded rushed, in parts where several words came out all at once and was even more inaudible. I think this is a good idea for a remix since it sounded nice, but I think it needs improvement before I could fully enjoy it. -
OCR00316 - Final Fantasy VIII "Eyes on Me (Obsession)"
ForumChibi replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I actually did not like this piece at all. I could barely tell what song it was when I was listening to it, and if the song's already half over by the time I can identify it I don't think it rates very highly. I didn't like the vocals, in fact I hated them. I will agree they sound 'creepy', which is not my thing and so I do have bias, but that the vocals sound like someone just talking and not singing ruins the song for me. There is no power in the song, there is no motivation or anything, it's just a monotonic piece with a somewhat annoying reverb that sounds like someone down on their luck in the slums trying to convey some sort of message that no one hears or cares about. The original song was beautiful and dramatic, and was first played between Squall and Rinoa when they first pretty much confess their feelings for each other, which is a major breakthrough for Squall. This, however, does not have any of that feeling at all. There is no emotion or compassion. The original was a love song, this one is not, and while I don't think every remix must have all of the original meaning for it to be good, I do believe a remix should have at least some of it. Overall this was just not an interesting improvement for me. -
OCR01177 - Xenogears "A Momentary Emotion"
ForumChibi replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Emotion of Xenogears is a sweet song in itself (one of my favorites even), but this remix of it is even more incredible. It's more laid back than the original as I recall, but the slower pace makes it seem all the better. -
OCR00632 - Zelda II "Temple Trance"
ForumChibi replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a GREAT song. Turning the original into something with this much power and class is no easy task. If only they could've remade the Gamecube release of this game with this kind of music... -
OCR01002 - Final Fantasy VII "Light and Flakey"
ForumChibi replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is an amazing mix of a very rare and not so memorable song from FF7. Most of my friends don't even recognize what song it is when they hear it at first, or have a hard time believing it was the snow fields, but it's faster tempo and quality is just awesome. This is one of my favorites to play when it's snowing out.
