Talk about things you didn't know you needed or even could exist... A jazzy French café-worthy arrangement of Final Fantasy IV and IX with inspiration from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood is definitely that, yet that's exactly what we've got, courtesy of colorado weeks with debuting Canadian ReMixer Aeroprism performing friendly French vocals! This neighborly rejoinder was a round 3 entry in the inaugural Game Set Mash!! compo pitting two Final Fantasy arrangement teams, SNES vs. PSX, in an arrangement mash-up battle! The second Game Set Mash!! compo with Metroid vs. Castlevania just kicked off last night, so GSM1 contestant Hemophiliac recommend we post something from the first GSM to celebrate! There's no way GMS2 will have anything like this in the upcoming compo, yet how can you pass it up when the potential for uniqueness is exemplified so perfectly by this piece? colorado weeks took the town theme inspiration of the primary source tune to a highly logical yet unexpected direction:

"Salut, mes voisins! This was our entry for the final round of Game Set Mash!! 1. This piece was a mashup of "Welcome to Our Town" from FFIV and "Not Alone" from FFIX. Because one of the sources was a town theme, we decided to pay tribute to Fred Rogers' and Johnny Costa's work on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Prior to the beginning of the round, colorado initially had their heart set on writing a "joke" track. As the round and the song continued to progress, we found that what we had written went in a completely different (sincere) direction. colorado weeks did the arrangement and Aeroprism performed the vocals. The lyrics were initially written in English by colorado, but Aeroprism graciously translated them into French for some chansonnier flair. We hope you enjoy! :)"

Those music box notes followed by the introductory piano until :25 are so on brand for Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, you can't help but love the stylistic send-up. And if you read those lyrics, oh my god, are they ever innocent and quaint, and completely befitting a Final Fantasy arrangement. It's not female vocals, yet I could absolutely see an endearing concept like this working in an old 90s Final Fantasy Vocal Collections album. The Js had smaller critiques that nonetheless didn't hold this back, and I think we all collectively should have just kept looping this, because this has a tremendously likeable sincerity to it, as colorado mentioned. Judge MindWanderer was ready to kick back and slowly enjoy a Parisian coffee while watching people go about their day:

"I really like the French café feel to this, which I got even before the vocals kicked in. That combined with interleaving You Are Not Alone in as a bridge made this sufficiently transformative to me. It's smooth enough that if you don't know the sources, the addition is mostly seamless [...] Overall this was well-realized and creative."

To me, the flow's jaunty, the arrangement's transformative, and the vocal performance is solid, along with the production and mixing. The shifts from sung vocals to spoken do provide low-key contrast as well. Nice to have bass writing with some presense as well; it was more just boomy without much attack, but it still helps fill out the soundfield well, so I'm cool with it. Would have loved an extension to the quick ending; just fashioning a more definitive conclusion with a few more seconds -- for example, with the mallet percussion -- would have capped this well. That said, we've got charm for days with this cheerful, earnest team-up by Colorado & Sébastien! Mark my words, one day, some dear neighbor's gonna cite this as a personal favorite OC ReMix!

This really encapsulated the warmth and inclusiveness of Mr. Rogers. It brings so much joy and happiness to me when I listen to it that I can't help but smile.

I'm really glad you kicked my butt in the third round of the compo with this, and I'm glad it's on the front page.

Glad to see this one finally make the light of day. ...Well deserved.

@aeroprism @colorado weeks

I had expressed before in GSM1 how much I loved this song, and I'll reiterate it again here. Congrats to you both, esp. Seb, for becoming a new ReMixer. If y'all do revisit it (and hope so) would be lovely to hear the extra take.

GL. HF. Hugs all around. Nice work. ♡

@Rhanti Salut Voisin! Moi aussi je suis du Québec!

Concerning the judges' review:

@prophetik music I liked the piano. I don't know if you're familiar with old "Chansonnier" music, like Jacques Brel, Joe Dassin, Georges Brassens etc, but the piano (or the music in general) in those pieces always had that frequency-squished, analog AM-radio-like feel so I thought what @colorado weeks did there was quite on purpose. As for the vocal range, you have no idea my friend. I can't tell you how many times I had to redo so many of the parts, it was so low, I felt like I was croaking instead of singing.

@Liontamer I agree about the ending and the lack of dynamic qualities. I'd 100% be game to re-do it is CW is game, see where we can take this.

@MindWanderer again, absolutely right about the range. If we were to redo this, I'd ask if it was possible to raise it maybe 2 semitones. (Unless that's a big no-no on the remix world). I'm used to singing classic opera. I have a very powerful voice but my range is unfortunately limited on both ends. I'm a very light baritone, or a very heavy tenor, whatever floats :) I can also croon like Frank Sinatra but this was my first experience as a "chansonnier" and singing so deep in the bass range was very challenging to me.

@XPRTNovice I agree 100% that this can be taken further. Again, it all depends if CW is game or if she's had enough of her crazy maple syrup neighbor :D

This was a hugely fun experience to me. I sincerely hope I can collab with more talented OC Remixers again!!

Thank you for the opportunity!

[FRENCH]

[Verse 1]
Salut voisin, comment vas-tu?
Ça fait si longtemps qu'on s'est croisés
Ton visage me manque depuis un moment
Je me demande où sont passées, toutes ces années

[Verse 2]
Salut voisin, comment vas-tu?

[Chorus]

[Last chorus]
C'est le moment de ton départ
Je suis si fier de te voir grandir
À ta prochaine visite viens me voir
Cher voisin, je suis avec toi
Oui, voisin, je suis avec toi

[ENGLISH]

[Verse 1]
Hello neighbor. How are you?
It's been so long since we passed each other
I missed your face for a while now
I wonder where all those years have gone

[Verse 2]
Hello neighbor, how are you?
Were you gone on an adventure?
It looks like you're so strong now
Tell me what gives you such a proud look

[Pre-chorus]
Even if we didn't meet very often
You'll nonetheless remain a dear friend

[Chorus]
No matter where you go
No matter what path you follow
This will always be your home
Neighbor, I am with you
Yes, neighbor, I am with you

[Verse 3]
Hello neighbor, how are you?
I know that journeys can be hard
You can rest for a while
You should not leave if you're not ready

[Pre-chorus]
Even if there's war or just bad weather
My friend, for you, I will always have a moment

[Interlude (spoken)]
Because of you, each day is unique, enriched by your presence
There's only one person in the world exactly like you, and that's you!
And people can like you simply the way you are
I'm always happy to see you, neighbor, see you soon!

[Pre-chorus]
Now you must continue your travels
I will always be right here for you, my friend

[Chorus]

[Last chorus]
It is time for you to leave
I am so proud to see you grow
On your next visit, come see me
Dear neighbor, I am with you
Yes, neighbor, I am with you
