OCR01115 - Chrono Trigger "Another Fair"
Liontamer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The timing was noticeably blocky, which interfered with how delicate the arrangement was intended to be and doesn't let it age too gracefully, but still a solid concept. I can't say I've heard this theme taken in a slower more emotive direction by anyone else, so I love that David brought something new to the table. -
OCR00578 - Life Force "Pharoah Land"
Liontamer replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Those string articulations... Well, what can ya do? When you hear of the phenomena of ReMixers wanting their first mix pulled, it's understandable, but I like that it's here so that other aspiring artists realize that God-tier artists start off as beginners just like everyone else. Wing's more than made up for this one. Love the source tune though, and hope others try it down the line here. -

*NO* Friday the 13th 'Friday the 13th Medley'
Liontamer replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
Hahaha! Yeah, I don't get why this was called a medley, when that's not the structure of this at all. From 2:22-2:49, you had the Side View Screen theme on top of the core Interior Screen theme, but that's about the only time anything major was going on other than the Interior Screen theme. This ain't a medley, so don't call it one. Anyway, ignoring harping on specific words, Chimpazilla's right that there wasn't much variation or development of this arrangement once you heard the first iteration of the theme. She's also correct that there needed to be additional substance to the writing, as these textures were relatively basic. I liked the backing organ/string writing behind the theme as an expansive element, but other than that there was very little interpretation beyond adapting the theme to this instrument set. I also agreed with her that this doesn't sound bad in terms of the sample quality and overall mixing/production. I felt some of the higher bowed string sequencing sounded too stiff, but it was nothing that drew out a pointed criticism with a timestamp, just a feeling that the overall sound had some (relatively minor) hitches with timing/realism. Decent initial take, Timothy, but there needs to be more variation and dynamic contrast within the arrangement. It's not enough to repeat the Interior Screen theme this many times w/o any meaningful differences; take the writing/arrangement in some other logical directions. NO (resubmit) -
OCR03582 - *YES* Castlevania "Vampirthrillic"

Agreed with Gario that this should have sounded less static, but the good easily outweighs what needed work. Fun stuff, Gian! YES -

Yeah, I'd say they're a match. Ask David Wise on the Tweeter.

No unofficial fan creations, period. Any game created by fans would need to be endorsed/released/pulled into the fold by the copyright holder in an official capacity, e.g. Street Fighter X Mega Man. If that's not the case, the game is ineligible for OC ReMix for a standalone mixpost. The best chance a "fan creation" game would be approved for representation on OCR is if the game is original IP and has a release on a notable platform or otherwise has built a meaningful following. It's not enough, for example, to put up a free game on Kongregate if it has no following, but it is to get it approved and sold on a commercial platform like Steam or iTunes. We use our discretion and common sense to make those calls.

We're not asking for any specific type of mixes. We work with what's already available and make themes from those.

*NO* Pokémon Red Version 'Creepy Loudness'
Liontamer replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
I'm with Chimpa. The timing of the opening string attacks seemed slightly behind, but the main issue is that the articulations sounded pretty fake. Cool transition to the metal at :28, though the strings might as well have been removed because they were mixed so softly compared to the guitars & drums during that transition. When the strings come back as accents at :57, they again sound practically inaudible like they might as well not be there. I liked the string writing from 1:11-1:31, which was audible. The machine gun drums from 1:32-2:00 completely drowned out the xylo/chromatic percussion; again, the ideas are good, but what's the point of layering stuff if one part can't be heard anyway? I love the expansiveness, creativity, and energy of the arrangement and performance overall, and that aspect was an easy pass. I'm not even a strong NO because the case can easily be made that, on balance, the production is OK. For me, I think this was almost at the line, but there should be some adjustments to get the bowed strings sounding more humanized and, more importantly, re-balancing this so that some of your supporting instrumentation isn't completely squashed out by the face-melting guitar & drum work. Chimpa pointed out over-compression was hurting this, and her "NO (more like a conditional on non-squashed render)" is basically where I'm at as well. It's a close call. If we got a tweaked version that toned down the compression a bit, that might be all we need to flip some NOs to YESs. Good luck with the rest of the vote though, Meirone, this is awesome, and I definitely want to see this posted in some form. NO (refine/resubmit) -
NPR, King of Fighters, and VGM...
Liontamer replied to Nitwit's topic in History & Study of Video Game Music
Here's a more specific link: http://www.npr.org/programs/morning-edition/2016/09/20/494684657/morning-edition-for-september-20-2016?showDate=2016-09-20 It's near the bottom after the Europe segment. We dunno who's involved in selecting the transition music, but we've also had a few pieces from our Mega Man X community album Maverick Rising used on NPR in the past also, so we'd love to know who to credit for that. Always down with VGM on NPR! -
On the production side, I actually didn't have a significant problem with the mixing; I agree that this could sound brighter, but what's here was OK. The part-writing was distinct enough to be heard, and I felt like the mixing didn't hugely undermine the presentation. That said, if you're going to have a track that's only 2:11-long, there's less room for error with stuff like the strings very obviously lacking in humanization, IMO. The releases in particular sounded very exposed, and it just sounds like a composition-focused WIP where the final polishing steps weren't done yet. On the plus side with the arrangement, nothing repeated verbatim and the piece evolved nicely. This may make it as is, but I know Slimy will hate the execution of those strings in the future. If this doesn't make it yet, I'd vote YES just off of the strings sounding more humanized. Good base, but tighten this up. NO (refine/resubmit)

OCR03425 - *YES* Undertale 'That's Not Funny'
Liontamer replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Fun stuff! Just co-signing that the source was dominant here, particularly because the chords being used are explicitly in the original track rather than a drastic simplification of anything. YES I'd be interested in Anton giving specifics on the other theme cameos he alluded to.
