  1. I finally get to go to sleep soon. While I get my ZzZs, head on over to https://webdrive.service.emory.edu/users/loji and snag the lastest AIM chat transcript courtesy of OverCoat. I'll be temporarily hosting the 107MB high quality, 96kbps-stereo version of VGF #21 over there as well until Binnie gets a hold of it and helps me out by mirroring it. Thanks a lot to Coma for helping me out there. I'm assuming by the time I wake up, it'll be mirrored, and at that point I'll host the 36MB lower quality, 32kbps-mono version, which actually sounds fairly good nonetheless, especially if you're used to listening to the archives Species helps me with when he's recording the show from our cruddy RealPlayer stream. Species will still be my backup for show recordings, especially since you KNOW I'll F one of them at some point down the line. Besides, I won't always necessarily have the time or access to just chill in the studio and encode my show right after I'm done, especially on substitution/mid-week shows. Also, take note, when you hear VGF through the RealPlayer stream or Species' recordings, I have to compensate for the deficiencies in the stream system by diminishing the bass and upping the treble to equalize the sound. So, when I record directly from the soundboard instead, those stream deficiencies are a non-factor and thus you get very low bass and dominant treble. The tracks all sound great nonetheless, so please, no complaints in those regards. Besides, with the information in the ID3 tag, you have all the info you need to pick up a track that your enjoyed for yourself. Thanks a lot to Prot for calling in and giving a quality insightful interview on a shitload of topics. I know Coma and DarkeSword were saying that they prefer when interviews are more informal and off-the-cuff, but I feel that everyone should have at least one interview that's a more focused and informative. Once you get 1 interview out of the way, then, as DarkeSword can attest to because he calls so often, it's a lot easier to shoot the shit and not be as tied down to some sort of structure. I think VGF #19 from two weeks ago, where we had five impromptu interviews, was a great example of that. So if and when Ari calls again, yeah, it'll be a lot looser interview. Pr0t covered everything I wanted to tackle and then some, so I'm glad he stopped by. Thanks to our mystery callers too, cuz I have no idea who they were of course. Also, again, I'd like to thank all of the new listeners and visitors to the AIM chat room, including LastUnicron, Black Hand, Zeality, k-wix & djpretzel, as well as the people who hung out in the chat room after the regular show was over for the afterparty featuring voting on the tracks from CompoST 6, as well stuff from Unknown, MC & Bloomer, WIPs from Sadorf & Hemophiliac and random OC mixes. I'm always glad more and more people are checking out the show and enjoying the layout, so I hope you guys keep coming back when you can. Now, let's get to the playlist, so I can go to bed: Larry Oji - WMRE (Emory University Student Radio; Atlanta, GA) "VG Frequency" - Saturday, March 13, 2004 / 10:05 PM - 12:35 AM 1. Protricity - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Forest Birdcussion" [OC ReMix #1138] 8. Protricity - Super Metroid "Premonition of Fell Purpose" [Relics of the Chozo] 9. Protricity joins in to go over why he remixes Donkey Kong Country 2 so extensively, the inspiration for remixing in different genres, the original plans for "Forest Birdcussion" including vocals from Star Salzman, his increased focus on sound quality for his music vs. the "need" for quality samples, the impetus for tackling Birdcussion in an ambient style, his mission to remix the entire DKC2 soundtrack, the reason for remixing from other games including the need to have an emotional attachment to those games, his overview of the quality, selectivity & voting habits of the OCR judges' panel, the validity of outspoken criticisms of the judges' standards and their mix rejections (Judge-hate!), how there's no good reason to feel overly insulted by impersonal talk on an internet message board, clearing up assumptions and giving the specifics of his dislike of Jeremy Soule's FF6 mix "Squaresoft Variation" including djpretzel's writeup for it, the negative externalities of professional composers submitting material to OCR, the effort involved in creating the Super Metroid collaboration album "Relics of the Chozo" including disappointment in the lack of participation from the mixing community and how he'd like to see the idea of collab projects thrive within OCR, his dislike of commercialization in the remixing scene, whether there was any difficulty in creating well-varied mixes for his large portion of Relics, how the Astyanax mix "Danger in Remlia" feels like his only personally unsatisfying work as a remixer, his satisfaction on how the Relics project ultimately ended up, various computer projects he's done including "Tank Fight" (beat the game on Hard mode, he dares you!), what aspiring mixers can do to get into the game without prior instrumental or music theory experience, what's potentially next for him on the music/remixing front, and his deep-seated personal hatred of zyko [http://www.public.asu.edu/~arasulin] 10. 2. And the funniest part is that based on BOTH of them, I can't tell which one of them would have changed the thread title from "Protricity" to "FGT"!
  3. Aight folks, it's that time again. Tonight's show of VG Frequency will of course feature some of the lastest tracks from around these parts. On VGMix, the Crazy Crackaz All-Starz lit it up with their River City Ransom mix, "River City Rap", and mellogear & zyko continue the influx of rap tracks in the community with "Samus vs. the Monster, FRENCH!" The intrepid men (and no women) of SoundTempest have been keeping themselves busy with regular editions of CompoST, the original game music hour-long compo, and we'll be playing tracks from contests 2 through 5 to give you the lowdown on that. We've got the latest 4 OC ReMixes from Noir, Mark Vera, bLiNd & Protricity. And on that note, tonight's guest interview is the very soft-spoken Protricity, who'll be talking about a whole host of things including his newst Donkey Kong Country 2 mix, "Forest Birdcussion". We'll also be playing two tracks from DCT, who we all wish the best for on his somewhat lenghty road to recovery. We'll have the chill instrumental version of his Sonic 3 mix "Iced Out Nine Twenty Two" as well as his remix of DarkSword's "The Moonlight Ballroom (1st Movement)" featuring 50 Cent, "In Da Club (Dark Sword Mix)." Tune in, peeps, as it should be another quality show. Be sure not to miss the goings on tonight by IMing me on AIM or joining the VGF chat room yourself at "VG Frequency".
  4. This mix hit me in the G-Spot! Nice work per the usual, Jordan. The Extended Mix for PMM Trance should be even hotter!
  5. I agree with what Pretz was saying in that this was unique territory for Prot to tackle. I loved how the intro had the same electrosynth of the original music from DKC2, and though some people will feel that the bird chirps aren't for them, I thought they added a lots of character and enhanced the general relaxing feel of the mix. Ari did a great job of using his time to subtly lay down the source melody in the beginning and then focus on developing his own progressions alongside the "birdcussion." I wasn't a big fan of the Donkey Kong Country 2 soundtrack, to be honest. While my opinion obviously flies in the face of Prot's own enjoyment of the DKC2 music and his desire to mix these tracks, I bring that up, because I feel that "Forest Birdcussion" does a great job of getting rid of the tribal/jungle drums that overpowered the original track ("Forest Interlude"), and bringing in more ambient and soundscape elements to make the music more accessible. Even in the latter half of the track, when Ari brought in a strong addition of percussion, it didn't detract from the other sounds that he had introduced beforehand. The ending featuring shimmering notes, piano, percussion hits and finally the fading bird chirps was absolutely well-done; a great, satisfying closure to the piece. Hearing how nice this track is makes me wish I bugged Prot for it earlier, rather than just sarcastically making fun of the title! Great work, Ari. A true keeper and one that brings a new dimension to the DKC series mixes already available.
  6. Thanks for all of the B-Day greetings peeps. A lot of people IMed me too. I'm OLD. Beyond 21, every year just brings you closer to DEATH!!!! You can't run from time! Don't forget to DL Beats of Rage! https://webdrive.service.emory.edu/users/loji
  7. Yo everyone, I've gotten around to hosting the AIM chat transcripts from this past week (19.5, 19.75 & 20), so check em out at https://webdrive.service.emory.edu/users/loji. Show MP3s'll be out eventually. Thanks as usual to Species for the archives and OverCoat for the transcripts. I've also got 2 VGF promos up that you can check out. The "Cool Spot" (#0) promo was just my first stab at recording whatever crap came out of my mouth and then editing it with music thanks to Cool Edit Pro. I won't be using it ever, but it's there. The "Snow Promotion" (#1) promo came out really well, IMO, and I'll be sure to use that when I can. I'll also be trying later in the week to make promos for KyleJCrb of Nitro Game Injection and ravon over at our OC radio station Ormgas! Meanwhile, if you've haven't heard of the fan game, Beats of Rage, it's Streets of Rage redone with characters and sprites from the King of Fighters series. I haven't played it just yet, but it certainly looks great, and I'll be checking it out. It seems the demand on the game is high, and many of the mirrors are being overburdened so I'm hosting the 53.7 MB ZIP of the PC version of Beats of Rage at my webspace; again - https://webdrive.service.emory.edu/users/loji. I'll keep the ZIP up until Species hooks me up with some show archives, but be sure to check Beats of Rage out, and hit up the thread here about it with some game feedback. Happy birthday to me, BTW! I turn 22 in less than 3 hours.

Souji Taro - "Unkai" [Axelay OST] 42. Capcom Sound Team - "Game Over" [street Fighter Alpha OST] I owe analoq one playing of "demonik elektronik", since I forgot. [shakes head]. Yes, kill me, I played River City Rammstein but somehow forgot to play demonik elektronik, so we'll be having it for the next episode. Vigilante is a penis. Thanks to zyko for calling in this week, which was tight since Waleed and myself set it up about 10 minutes before I left to go to the studio. The cell quality was iffy on the headset, but there was a good reason for that if you stuck around for the stuff after the regular show. With that said, we also had a sick VG Frequency afterparty featuring zyko scaring the young but zealous BliziHiZaKe with his own drunken, high freestyling skills; weed later called in to call Protricity a bitch (even though he's joking, YES!) and make his cat scream, as well as mention what was going on in the middle of his interview (that wily weed blew a fuse). OverCoat managed to have me play God knows what, and even managed to ruin zyko's favorite Beatles song, with hilarious results. Over the next 2 hours, we had tons of random mixes, originals and WIPs with stuff from Dan Baranowsky, OverCoat, zyko, DCT, BliziHiZaKe, Moose585, Hemophiliac, Digital Coma, Saunders and 12 and 1/2 minutes of the bumpers of VG Frequency. Larry went absolutely stir crazy from 2:30 to 2:45 and yelled at GrayLightning without the aid of caffeine over not 1, not 2, but 3 f'ing requests for "Fowl Jive", as well as BliziHiZaKe about fully playing his CounterStrike remix. Bubb Rubb (Whoo Woo!) & Cabbageboy (Donkey Kong!) closed out 2 extra hours of what everyone would call radio stupidity. Anyone that tells you differently, they're lying through their ass. Did I miss anything? Yes, I probably did, but we'll have an AIM chat transcript soon that clocks in at nearly 1MB. Thanks to EVERYONE who tuned into Larry's binge session of shows for VG Frequency. I'm definitely glad to try my best to entertain the peeps, and doing 3 shows in 3 days with over 2 hours of extra airtime after EACH show is certainly one way of going about it. Give Species some time to get the archives out, cuz he did a lot of work recording 'em on Thursday, Friday & Saturday. Also, like I was saying, the WMRE webstream may go down over next week, so there may not be a show next Saturday. Just keep an eye out. But, you know, I think we've all had our fill for the past few days. And with that, I'm out for this week. 20 weekly episodes. Shit. That's a lot of radio...
  9. Then of course, there was VG Frequency the next day, and all was good. Thanks to everyone who turned out for the special show, which was nearly 3 hours. I'm not even sure where the time went on that, but it was a great show. Thanks to DarkeSword, DCT & zircon for calling in. I'll be providing more thorough details from their call-ins once I get Species' show archive and provide that to everyone. The show ran just a little long, so something like the last 1 or 2 minutes got cut off from Species archive and was lost to the ages! That's alright though: thanks to Species for maxing out his hard drive space just to record the show. Everyone really liked the material for this one, which was a good mix of original game music, the PRC10 remixes, and tracks covering the American, European & Japanese arrangement scenes, so the archive will pimp a lot of good stuff out when it's released. There were quite a few requests for me to provide people with various tracks that were played or referenced yesterday. Off the top of my head I can think of Digital Coma's "I Make Music", S.S.H's "Holy Orders (Be Just Or Be Dead)" rock mix (a Japanese mix), Lightwarmth's rejected FF9 sequenced piano submission "Messenger in the Key of Black", Lix's CT remix "Sealed Door (Ice Resolute Mix)" (another Japanese mix), as well as the instrumental version of The Bronx Rican's recently posted OC mix "Knuckles' Unknown from M.C." I'll be trying to provide those tracks as soon as I can for you, especially those Japanese tracks that don't have English tags, so if you see anything you're interested in, lemme know. Enjoy the playlist: Larry Oji - WMRE (Emory University Student Radio; Atlanta, GA) "VG Frequency" - Friday, March 5, 2004 / 10:10 PM - 1 AM 1. JigginJonT - VG Frequency "Be As One" Bumper 2. 10. I wanna give a big thanks to everyone who provided tracks to play for last Thursday's 2nd Annual VG Frequency All-Originals show. Just like last year, I wasn't disappointed with even one of the submissions, and some quality requests for other people, as well as bonus tracks, made for even more quality listening. I'll be hosting the chat transcript a little later, but for now here's the rundown of the playlist: Larry Oji - WMRE (Emory University Student Radio; Atlanta, GA) "VG Frequency" - Thursday, March 4, 2004 / 10:05 PM - 12:05 AM 1. 11. We're almost ready for another shot of VG Frequency warmin' you up for Spring Break. Classes are over, and it's time to chill and not do a damn thing. So if you're not leaving for the Bahamas yet, relax with a little internationally flavored VG Frequency. We've got a great sampling of tracks tonight with OCR, VGMix, R:K:O/R64, Live House S.S.H, GrosPixels, as well as the top tracks from the People Remix competition 10. Not bad for a show where I put together the playlist 2 hours beforehand. Hope to see you there.
  12. We've got the All-Originals show tonight from 10PM-12AM as well as me doing ANOTHER show from Friday 10PM-12AM, so if you're around, be around where it counts, you bastard. I may not be doing a Saturday show, so Friday'll be the weekly show unless I post up saying I'll be doing the regular Saturday time. In any case, tune in on Friday as we have a little catching up to do on the latest tracks from the game mixing scene. I'll be featuring the top 3 tracks from last week's People's Remix Competition 10 (from Scott Peeples, Mythril Nazgul & TO), and plucking a few tracks from Japanese and European arrangement sites for the hell of it. So over the next few weeks, there may be more Game Over, Grospixels, S.S.H. & R:K:O stuff, for example, to diversify what's on the show. For an example of a Japanese track, check out Lix's CT mix of Sealed Door released a month ago, which I'm hosting for the moment at my webspace along with Species' archive of episode #19 featuring interviews with DarkeSword, Jared Hudson, SuperGreenX, Succubus & zircon, so don't forget to score that before that's gone. And if anyone's interested in helping me with live bumper recordings on Friday night after midnight, lemme know, because I'll be tooling around after the Friday night show trying to record promos to VG Frequency thanks to CoolEditPro. I'll also try and finally get something cool over to KyleJCrb for Nitro Game Injection since I owe him a promo from way back. The All-Originals show is tonight from 10 PM to Midnight on the east coast, so be there to check out all the stuff, and don't forget about Friday night 10 PM to 12 AM as well, when we get back to the regular format. Hope everyone is having a good Spring Break coming up.
  13. I asked you guys to keep on the lookout for when I'd reschedule the All-Originals show, and Thursday night is that night. So be sure to make it to VG Frequency's 2nd Annual All-Originals Show, this Thursday from 10 PM to Midnight EST. The shows before and after me apparently feature ladies, so if you wanna test the stream and whatnot, feel free to do it at those times. I may or may not be on this Saturday, as I'll be on Spring Break. When I know what my plans are, I'll let everyone know.
  14. Actually...that wasn't Suteki da Ne from FFX. That was some completely different Japanese song, probably with the same name. I still thought it was decent, though. :/ Goddamit!
  15. Ah, but technically, he DID miss much, Dhsu! For you see, though we did not have the All-Originals show as planned, VGF somehow turned out pretty interesting without much music. Thanks a hell of a lot to DarkeSword, Jared Hudson, SuperGreenX, Succubus & zircon for BAILING MY ASS OUT by calling into the show and providing some much-appreciated interview time, as well as everyone else who provided requests to play over the night. (Except for "Suteki da ne"! ) I'm sorry I really couldn't get to everyone's requests, but a slapped-together request show might be fun at some point when I do it ON PURPOSE! Important thanks to my usual suspects, Species for the MP3 archive as well as OverCoat for the chat transcript, both available now at https://webdrive.service.emory.edu/users/loji. As you see in the playlist info, the All-Originals show was postponed, since the cord connecting laptop to the radio station soundboard was broken earlier by the incredibly stupid DJs before me. Therefore, I can't stress this enough: stay alert for me doing a mid-week show to cover the All-Originals material; otherwise, we'll do all of that for the next show! Enjoy your playlist, and let's never speak of this again! Larry Oji - WMRE (Emory University Student Radio; Atlanta, GA) "VG Frequency" - Saturday, February 28, 2004 - 10 PM - 12:07 AM 0. Simply put, the idiotic hosts of the show before VG Frequency, Bumknuckle & Whoreslice, managed to sever the cord needed to connect Larry's laptop to the radio station soundboard, rendering the All-Originals show planned for this week as a bust, so please enjoy the following impromptu proceedings 1. DarkeSword calls in to find out what's wrong with the planned show and whores his site, sees how Larry's doin', reveals that JigginJonT bought an Escalade, discusses Jeremy Soule's new Final Fantasy 6 mix, inquires about the problems with "Dream Pipe" now showing up on the OCR main page, provides major pimpage on a mix currently in the OC judges' panel (The Bronx Rican's Sonic Adventure 2 mix, "Knuckles' Unknown from M.C."), criticizes Larry's lack of video game playing, plugs the first Totally Awesome DarkeSword Collaboration Remix Challenge and its objectives, grasps to explain how the All-Originals show was postponed, strokes Succubus's intellectual ego, flaunts his Spring Break, and pimps The Bronx Rican again [http://www.darkesword.com] 2. Jared Hudson wants a ShoutCast stream (don't we all?), rags on the show after VG Frequency ("Please Kill Us Now!"), mentions a potential gig through Digital World FX composing music for a classic cars documentary on the Speed channel as well as Abram McCalment's new equipment, laments the difficulties of ragtime composition, confirms the surly-personable paradox of internet personalities, discusses n00b behavior, piracy and artistic development in the game mixing & professional music communities, goes over his troubles with his application to Berklee, feels the need to beatbox, and uses metaphors to make everything better [http://www.hudsonstudios.net] 3. Star Salzman w/Protricity - Megaman X1 "Dreams Come True" [http://www.starblast.org & http://www.public.asu.edu/~arasulin] 4. Paige requests "Suteki de na", and Larry stupidly plays her request 5. Rikki - "Suteki da ne" (a.k.a. 'Isn't It Beautiful?') [Final Fantasy X: Suteki da ne] 6. Paige complains about Larry cutting Rikki off mid-song, while Larry complains over the physiological side effects of listening to "Suteki da ne" 7. The Bronx Rican - Sonic Adventure 2 "Knuckles' Unknown from M.C." [http://www.bronxrican.com] 8. SuperGreenX makes an appearance to advertise his upcoming original album "Synesthetic", explain the promotional differences between his own website compared to MP3.com, talk about fans of his music from the Flash Flash Revolution community, promote his weekly Wednesday night radio show (8-10 PM) on Flash Flash Revolution Radio, and give insight on his musical influences [http://www.supergreenx.com] 9. Disposer & Thumper - Great Greed "The Greatest Greed" [VGMix2 #42 / OC ReMix #1126] 10. Succubus let's everyone know that she's been enjoying the show, and she's feeling the frigid Winterpeg weather while dissing American snow; she's also practicing her New York accent, lets us know about her graduate studies and thesis work involving atmospheric science & meteorology, observes the male pursuit of intellectual women, lets us know about LooneyCall (the Canuck approach to 10-10-220), and highlights the Dakar vs. Succubus debate on what's the better Need for Speed soundtrack [http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~umfisico] 11. Crispin Hands - "Cerebral Plumbing" [Need for Speed II Special Edition OSV] 12. zircon makes his presence felt for SoundTempest.net, gives us the low on how the site's new format for original game music submissions emerged, points out the potential growth for SoundTempest as analogous to OverClocked ReMix's beginnings, mentions attention already coming to SoundTempest from the game development community, makes comparisons of the site and its contributors to Tommy Tallarico's Game Audio Network Guild (G.A.N.G.), and speaks about his artistic progression from his first Phantasy Star 4 remix "Motavian Battlefield" to his current one "Final Emprise", as well as the pronunciation of Xelebes, comparisons of community feedback for one's music from VGMix & OC ReMix, and tackling more remixing material from the Phantasy Star series [http://www.zirconstudios.com] 13. Ziwtra - Xenogears "Skyline" [OC ReMix #1038] 14. DarkeSword - "It's Dark Outside" [ReVamped OST] 15. ENCORE: The Bronx Rican - Sonic Adventure 2 "Knuckles' Unknown from M.C." [http://www.bronxrican.com]
  16. Heheh, lots of good stuff from everyone who posted. I'm suprised Nintendo of Japan never came up with a Boo Cocky ghost for Mario, though knowing the Japans, they probably made a concept sketch and it's an in-joke in their company. With that said, it wouldn't surprise me if Wingy and his penchant for bukakke somehow gained employment at Nintendo of Japan. Shit, his mind packed his bags a long time ago! He's a full perved-out Japan! Mythril suspects that Ailsean is analogous to goatse. Never quite thought of it that way. You know...the whole ass stretching thing. And not thinking about goatse was definitely on purpose. Please use the for the internet superstar comparisons in the future! No prob on the archives, Justin. Thank Species for getting these out with the quickness. zyko didn't show up last week, but weed'll be coming on the air relatively soon, yo. We were talking on AIM about a whole shitload of stuff, and he's absolutely right that he can talk at length about pretty much any subject regarding remixing, music, and the community here, so look forward to a lot of good stuff from weed. Ha; I'm glad you noticed I played your PRC9 winning track, Emporer. It was my pleasure to listen to it and play it. Keep holdin' it down in Russia. [/Russian pride] Good luck tweaking "Tears of the Lurker" and submitting it to OCR. The track went over pretty well last Saturday, so it has a genuine shot of making it with even further work. Good job yo. For tonight's show, we're featuring ONLY original (i.e. non-remix) work from remixers, so check out the submission thread to see some of the tracks that are going to be featured tonight. I'm gonna be hard-pressed to fit all of the tracks that I have in the space of tonight's show, but if all goes as planned, SGX'll be calling quickly to get out some original pimpage for his upcoming original album project, and DCT'll dropping in for a second as well. Like last year, we've got a great set of original works from OC's finest as well as hot tracks from several up-and-coming developing artists in the community. You'd be stupid to not check things out tonight. DON'T BE STUPID! If you're interested in the proceedings, be sure to be around from 10PM to 12AM EST tonight, and don't forget about IMing me at "Liontamer87" or joining the AIM chat room directly at "VG Frequency". Tonight's all about originality.
  17. This is absolutely excellent work, and even though DJP (understandably) went crazy in his mix description, this one's pretty much everything he said it was, and to be honest, I don't even like the Terra theme, so I'm grateful for Jeremy's very dynamic arrangement here. For all the nitpickers out there, I suppose if you want professional work, turn to a professional, because this is indeed very refined and polished. The atmosphere here is pretty dynamic without being overbearing, and the strings are beautiful. It's tracks like these that make it much easier to get people to give video game music a chance, and with that said, I'll be glad to show this off to people I know. Hopefully, Mr. Soule might provide OCR with one or two more tracks down the line that give us more insight on other fellow game music composers he's enjoyed. As long as they don't get buried in the proverbial submission pile though, right Dave? Hey, a close call is better than not hearing this track at all, so hopefully no one rags on you too much!
  18. First off, I wanna formally congradulate Darke on being on of the two newest judges here at OC. He's definitely risen such a long way in 2003, and it's good to see that growth recognized. Shariq jokingly bags on me for not reviewing his newest postings at VGMix, but I DID review "Dream Pipe", so here's my detailed review from VGMix below. Nice job, bro! Like DarkeSword alluded to in his overview of the mix, the Special Stage theme in Sonic 2 was not terribly good music. I think it certainly worked in the context of the game, but, when removed from it, the source tune doesn't really stand alone well, and isn't something typically considered good listening outside of its game unlike many more notable tracks such as the Sonic 1 Labyrinth Zone theme, for example. The big challenge that DarkeSword had for remixing the Sonic 2 Special Stage theme was essentially to turn chicken sh*t into chicken salad (or gumbo out of doodoo meat for all you H*R fans), and I think DS's unique spin on the construction of this track helped make "Dream Pipe" stand out as a big improvement over it's lacking source tune. The second thing you notice in the track (after the viloin sythns) as it warms up is that the basic background beat for the mix is significantly different from (yet still very reminiscent of) the way it sounds from the original music. By taking liberties with the most basic of structural elements of the track, there's already a different, more accessible feel to the mix. The piano chords that make up the meat of the melody are also a lot less in-your-face than the LOUD synths from the source theme, and DarkeSword takes general care to tone down this mix from the almost chipperly agressive structure of the original. Despite the way that the mix tends to be more laid back that it's source tune, the construction of Dream Pipe is still similar enough to the Special Stage track that you can honestly envision Sonic and Tails running to this music in the setting of the game, so Dream Pipe doesn't distance itself from the spirit of the original in DarkeSword's effort to create something different. The bongo and electrosynth combination work and the piano predominant solo in the second half of the mix is where you experience the most dynamic rearrangement, so if you weren't really feeling that the mix was exploring new territory before, the second half pretty much erased those concerns, and pushed the mix over the edge. A lenghty amount of time spent on the more liberal arrangement of the theme in part 2 eventually leads into a bridge connecting the progress back to the more familiar melody you hear in the beginning. Since the first half had that original song familiarity for me, I was glad that DarkeSword allowed the mix to come full circle as a total package, and thereby not let the listener feel unsatisfied that the first section wasn't revisited in any way. It's a lot easier to gain recognition for rearrangement when you decide to alter the tempo of an original song or change its time signature, but we'd be remiss to forget that sometimes the changes involved in rearrangement aren't quite as drastic and overt. DarkeSword has managed to keep the pace of Dream Pipe the same as the original tune, but nevertheless has done a lot in the instrumentalization and arrangement work (in the 2nd half) here to add his sylistically laid-back stamp to the Special Stage music and make it a lot more accessible than it's mediocre inspiration. To me that certainly achieves the goal of perpetuating whatever legacy the original music had. I definitely believe that DarkeSword took Walan's challenge and ran with it in a way that not many others could do, which is why "Dream Pipe" definitely deserves serious listening.
  19. I said the archives would be up by 4 PM EST on VGMix, and I meant it! https://webdrive.service.emory.edu/users/loji Go ahead and pick up shows #16 & #18. Like I said before, #17 is a no-go, and the stream problems have F-ed up 13.99, 14, & 15, I believe. Species'll hook me up with older stuff down the line, as long as the recording was ok. I know Wingy still wants #10 for the bukakke jokes. Thanks again for the NFS tracks, Dakar. Yeah, definitely keep letting me check out further tracks from the Need for Speed series. Name pimpage shall continue! I'll be buggin' you soon, Beat. Keep the Final Energy goodness coming, bro! And everyone, you BETTER be pimpin' the All-Originals thread for the special event next week. Don't leave me hanging. I know a lot of you have great material to submit, so be sure to pimp that out!
  20. Yo, folks. Glad to have so many people checking out the show this week, though we unfortunately had no weed at the show! I didn't wanna play zyko's stuff without him being there to comment on it, so I'll be saving it for when weed's available to call in. Maybe we can get something going for sometime during the upcoming week, since zyko's down with that. The "controversy" over the lyrical content of Niggaz 4 Life has become a pretty hot topic over the last couple of days. We'll see what ends up happening, but please keep your eyes open for a possible mid-week show this coming week. Thanks to DarkeSword & JigginJonT for calling in and providing the mixer entertainment this week, as well as all of the new listeners this week for stopping by. Props to OverCoat & Moose585 for the chat transcript hookups. With Spring Break coming soon and Larry chillin', expect some cool shit to finally see the light of day including comprehensive playlists, AIM interviews & funny VGF chat excerpts up on the VG Frequency webpage. Next week is the All-Originals show, so if you're a mixer and wanna contribute something, get the layout here and submit 1 track of yours for me to pimp. Thanks to Species for recording this week's show. This has actually been the first show, I believe, since Season 2 started that was able to be recorded, since the Real stream blows, but I may be able to obtain the MP3 archive Sunday and get it out there. Now check out the playlist to see what was cookin': Larry Oji - WMRE (Emory University Student Radio; Atlanta, GA) "VG Frequency" - Saturday, February 21, 2004 - 10:10 PM - 12:10 AM 1. 21. Taken care of. BTW, anyone who's interested, there are updated versions of the RealAlternative & QuickTimeAlternative installer available at my webspace, as well as a backlog of chat transcripts.
  22. Thanks for everyone who stopped by Friday's impromptu show and hung out, especially Vigilante & DCT for calling in. It was a sweet turnout, and there's nothing more fun then mixing combustible elements like Jared Hudson & Dan Baranowsky. We've got some good stuff coming up for Saturday, but let's get to Friday's playlist first: Larry Oji - WMRE (Emory University Student Radio; Atlanta, GA) "VG Frequency" - Friday, February 20, 2004 - 4:05 - 6:05 PM 1. DarkeSword - Super Mario 64 "Pearl Diver" [http://www.darkesword.com] 2. Nobuo Uematsu - "J-E-N-O-V-A" [Final Fantasy VII OST] 3. Vigilante calls in from his car to let everyone know he's not dead first and foremost, pimps new stuff on the horizon including a Zelda 64: Ocarina of Time remix, and comments on the additions of DarkeSword & [OMG, THAT'S CLASSIFIED INFORMATION] to the OC judges' panel [http://www.geocities.com/jesse_taub] 4. analoq - Phantasy Star 1 "Wanta Phanta" [OverClocked ReMix #953] 5. The Evil Horde - Megaman 2 "Quick Draw" [OC ReMix #470] 16. Avien - Streets of Rage 2 "Slow Moon Groove" [VGMix1 #1370 / OC ReMix #788] 17. Koji Kondo - "Swimming BGM" [super Mario Bros. 3 OST] Don't forget about Saturday's show, i.e. tomorrow. zyko will be on hand for an interview, and (not like I've formally asked or anything), but maybe DarkeSword can briefly call in and give a few words about being appointed to the OC judges' panel, or maybe Beatdrop can call in about his decision to step down from the panel. In any case, weed'll be with the show and taking your questions if you have them. There's also gonna be tons of other stuff on the show as well, including some of the latest OC mixes, Emporer's winning entry for PRC9, stuff from Star Salzman, Pixelated, Beatdrop, Unknown, Mustin, the "very, very popular" Seifer, Dennis Mott, JigginJonT, SuperGreenX and more, including a few tracks from the Need for Speed series contributed by Dakar (thanks yo). Everything's looking good this week, so be sure to tune into the main show, Saturday night, 10 PM to Midnight EST. The 28th's the All-Originals Show #2; be sure to contribute to the upcoming thread on that.
  23. Hello there, folks. Hope you all enjoyed your Valentine's Day proceedings last night. If you couldn't be out there on some dates and working your mojo, I hope you at least stopped by to check out the video game related festivities over at VG Frequency. This week's episode was cleverly titled "Infected with VD", which is also appropriate given that the Emory network was being extremely awful, so the stream was lousier than usual and I was in and out of AIM every few minutes. Sorry to Species, who couldn't get a recording of the show this week, thanks to Emory's shitty network problem. A whole bunch of people weren't even able to tune in, the connection was so horrendous. If I can, I'll sneak in an extra show during the week to make up for it, provided things are more stable. Regardless, we had an excellent offering of V-Day-related songs and I'm really proud of the offering we had this week. Of course, there are other songs that could have fit the theme, but we've only got 2 hours, so no complaints. Thanks again to everyone who made requests and everyone who was able to stop by. I was able to hang out and play an hour and a half of extra stuff as well, so thanks to DCT & neminem who hung out a little longer. Thanks to neminem for the chat transcript this week. I'm working on providing the backlog of AIM convos so those should be up soon. Species will also be sending me an old episode later in the week. Be sure to be around next week, when zyko comes on the air for an interview. I hope the stream becomes more manageable next week, because you know weed's gonna be a dope interview. Feel free to ask questions in the chat room or whatnot, as weed's willing to answer all sorts of questions. Without further ado, let's get to the playlist: Larry Oji - WMRE (Emory University Student Radio; Atlanta, GA) "VG Frequency" - Saturday, February 14, 2004 - 10:05 PM - 12 AM 1. Red Omen - VG Frequency "Brings Us Together" Bumper 2. Noriyuki Iwadare - "Pretty Girl" [Lunar: The Silver Star Story Complete OST] 3. I'll be looking to OCR & VGMix to provide me with requests. The first show was a full 4 hours, so we'll see how things turn out for this next one. I'll be doing a separate thread to ask for requests, so be sure to keep an eye out for that. No need to post right here.
  24. If you're not in love, you better be here soon...
