  3. Mixing's a bit lo-fi, but I'm not hearing how this is a NO at all. Great energy and a spirited rock cover. Didn't think this needed the little chiptune cameos/tradeoffs, but certainly not a big deal, and I thought it was a decently executed idea, even if not optimal. I liked the acoustic guitar brought in at 1:39 along with the dark sustained notes behind it, which gave this an eerie feel. There was also chiptune there in the background, but it was so super quiet that it was basically a non-factor. Yeah, I don't get what the NOs are on about at all. This arrangement is nicely personalize and expanded compared to the original, and while the production isn't sharp and lacks highs for sure, it's reasonably well mixed to where I can hear the major parts in their own proper space. Just because the arrangement is melodically conservative doesn't mean that there can't be enough other elements of arrangement through the genre, instrumentation, tempo, and original writing additions. This is a perfect example of a strong rock cover that we should be welcoming and fits comfortably within OCR's Submissions Standards. Let's not get carried away here. YES

The album is available for free download at https://remixjump.ocremix.org. Featuring seven tracks from six artists in a variety of styles, the album contains multiple tributes to fan-favorite franchises Dragon Ball Z, One Piece & Yu-Gi-Oh! through their games on the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and Wii. "It's been six years since I floated the idea for this album and I'm so ecstatic about its release!" exclaimed album director Malik "WiFiSunset" Williams. "Shonen Jump, and anime in general, has always been something I've loved, from watching Dragon Ball Z as a kid on Adult Swim (Midnight Run) to now, where there's so much of a wonderful abundance of different anime." Shonen ReMix Jump! is the second OC ReMix community album inspired by properties originating in comics and animation, following 2014's Shell Shocked, an powerhouse rock & metal musical tribute to Konami's famous 16-bit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games. "I've been mulling this over for a while now, and I'm absolutely certain that we'll have a volume II sort of thing for this album in the future." album co-director Williams anticipated. "I deeply appreciate the perseverance and determination from all the artists on this album." It's been 6 years since I floated the idea for this album and I'm so ecstatic about its release! Shonen Jump, and anime in general, has always been something I've loved, from watching Dragon Ball Z as a kid on Adult Swim (Midnight Run) to now, where there's so much of a wonderful abundance of different anime. I deeply appreciate the perseverance and determination from all the artists on this album. This album wouldn't be possible without your creativity and drive to make music. I'm also incredibly lucky to have had great co-directors that have helped to steer direction and vision of the album to what it is today: a loving tribute by Shonen Jump fans to the series that continues to inspire and entertain people. I've been mulling this over for a while now, and I'm absolutely certain that we'll have a volume II sort of thing for this album in the future. A huge special thanks goes out Theory of N for being a major part in getting this album over the last hurdles toward release, Doulifée for providing the signatures for the album, Sasha Petersen for providing amazing artwork for the album, everyone who helped bring this album together, and Felecia S. (my fiancée) for encouraging me throughout the way. - Malik Williams (WiFiSunset)

  14. Agreed with the others that the arrangement, while enjoyable, is too conservative. I love the source tune, but the arrangement here didn't do enough to distinguish itself from the original, IMO. The claps sounded super flimsy and stapled underneath the rest of the music with no synergy. It's a solid conservative cover, but there needs to be more personalization to the arrangement, whether it's interpreting the melody, changing the textures more, or other writing and production techniques to differentiate the presentation even further. I liked the strings at 4:16 as an idea, although that was so brief at the end. On the production side, the mixing was serviceable, but could have been cleaner/sharper; nothing a more interpretive arrangement couldn't have overcome though. Can't go wrong with this source tune, and again, this was an enjoyable listen, Dave, we just need more elements of interpretation/arrangement for the Submission Standards here. I hope we hear from you again, even if it isn't a resubmission of this piece, because you're already putting together solid-sounding work. NO (resubmit)

  20. Conditional on volume, baby! But otherwise YES. Cool arrangement with the focus on the vocals; dug the textures surrounding them. Enunciation didn't bother me. EDIT (6/10): Volume boosted. Vote boosted. YES
  21. I immediately felt the mixing should be cleaner. Arrangement-wise, this is a nice sound upgrade, but I didn't feel this arrangement was personalized or interpretive enough to stand apart from the original, particularly until 1:54. If the structure is going to be this conservative, it needs even more interpretation via instrumentation and textural changes, and original writing additions. NO (resubmit)
  22. I agreed with everything MindWanderer said; the big sound is ambitious, but not well executed; as long as you keep refining your execution though, Kouichi, you have the potential to sound great. This has sloppy timing and wrong notes with the guitar, and, especially during the densest sections, the mixing was sloppy and imbalanced. The choir sample used at 1:56 couldn't be deciphered and just got barreled over by the guitars and drums, which wouldn't make sense in a realistic setting. Lots of energy, but the timing, notes, and mixing all add up to needing to hear this redone or refined. NO

  24. 15 years ago, this would have been a shoo-in for me. The core of this feels somewhat MIDI-rip-ish, but it's a very basic source tune. One thing that's not a dealbreaker but still hurt this was that the mixing of the bassline is too soft and subtle. The sound design is cool, but the "Vanilla Dome" melody only has one sound and relies on all of the instrumentation around it to provide the evolution; that's certainly a viable approach that's been done here before, but I didn't think this developed/evolve enough, even within a purposefully narrower dynamic curve like this track has. The changeup at 2:32 was very welcome, though it was only for 20 seconds. Back to the melody again at 2:58, but it was just repeating things from where the build up and textural density started peaking at 1:58. There were some additional scratchy/distorted sounds from 3:28 until the end that were worth nothing; arguably too abrasive (at least on headphones), but it's not a big deal and your mileage may vary. Not to make the track too gimmicky, but even other things like some minor/subtle variations in the lead and/or bassline sounds or writing, or playing around with the stereo field/panning could have also added to the development of the piece. I enjoy and appreciate what's there, Joey, and perhaps some other Js will feel this develops enough, so good luck with the rest of the vote. I'd say to other Js to give this a few listens to better appreciate how this builds in a low-key way. For me, I felt this needed a little more substance, but it was close and the creativity of the take here shouldn't be sold short. If this doesn't make it as is, it wouldn't take much more to nudge it over the line, IMO. NO (resubmit)
