  4. Great round (last week), many high scores in my list here's my reviews, and again, sorry for the late voting/reviewing: KingTiger - Es-cop-ay: The transition from the heavy reverb sfx to the very clear vocals is not perfectly smooth. On the other hand: very clear vocals! I hear the Crescent Grizzly bits here and the piano chords mimick the Gauntlet theme. Some words feel a bit unnaturally streched, but otherwise: well done man! The part at 0:55 with the double vocals works very well and gives a nice change in dynamics. At 2:25, things are getting a bit repetitive. The birdge at 2:45 is a good change in dynamics and is well executed, a bit short though. Nice work man! Creating such a song in a week; kudos! Crescent Grizzly is sparse, but it's there and it's blended together with Sigma Palace. 8/10 Cam3 - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Maverick: Cool mood; militaristic with a touch of funk. Snare sample isn't that good though. Gauntlet source is very clear. Transition to an adapted version of Neon Tiger works very well. Transition part at 1:45 is very well done, I love the high disonnant piano at the end. In the part afterwards, the Sigma Palace chord progression is very recognizable. Awww.. it's already over? Too bad man, it felt a bit cut short. Awesome stuff, great adaptations and nice vibe (especially a transition from genres). Too bad it feels cut-off (or too short at least) 7.5/10 Eino Keskitalo feat. Jorito & Tuberz McGee - Subtle Haystack Tibulation: Intro feels like the boss introduction theme, since it completely falls silent (which isn't a good or bad thing, just reminded me of it ). Guitars are a bit buried. Combination of instruments is interesting but doesn't always work imo. Middle-section is nice, with the weird rythm. But I have a real trouble of recognizing the sources. I hear Frost Walrus in the middle section, but I couldn't indentify the Sigma Palace theme. Part at the 3-minute mark is cool, but feels disconnected due to the completely different sound. Nice mix, nothing too extraordinary though imo. Can't hear much of the gauntlet source, guitars are a bit buried and not every instrument works well in the soudscape. Ending feels a bit disconnected. 7/10 Garpocalypse - Straight Outta RAGE: Good intro of setting the vibe and the groove. Altered Flame Stag theme kicks in, creative writing! Oh I like the choirs in the background at 1;20 and I like the female vocal samples. The part at the 3-minute mark is a good change of pace; percussion is nice as well. The transition at the 4-minute mark also works well. The mix doesn't drag on due to the different dynamics despite it's lenght, well done! I've tried to hear the Sigma Palace theme, but I couldn't hear it unfortunatly. Great vibe, excellent creative writing on the Flame Stag theme and nice dynamics keep the mix interesting. Couldn't make out the Gauntlet theme, sadly. 8/10 WillRock feat. Jason Covenant & Ghetto Lee Lewis: Also a very militaristic feel. Guitars fit nicely with the heavy reverb. Nice dramatic adaptation of the Guantlet theme with the choirs and organ. Don't like the sound of that brass too much; although a fine adaptation of the Maverick theme. I like the choir part more (with the same-ish adaptation). Birdge at 2:30 is nice, but doesn't change the dynamics too much. 3:09 part is a good change of dynamics, nice Maverick source usage. Still don't like the brass sound though. Accompanying instruments are very good otherwise though. Wailing guitars for more dramatic effect: check. Harp and piano (and later choir) section? Really? Really cliche, but works well Good feel, creative writing and good blending of themes. I thinks the dynamics should've been changed a little sooner, but the following parts are really well executed 8.5/10 Amphibious - Chiral: Piano intro plays the Sigma Theme chords (well one note of them anyway). Shit got electronic at 0:35. Not too fond of the synths used, since their delay causes every note to be hit just after the beats. Lead synth enters at 1:10; don't hear much of the Maverick or Gauntlet theme here. Transition back to the "intro" works fine. "Fade in"-transition works well as well. Nothing much happening from 2:39 though; the change in dynamics in the part at 2:45 feel a bit too sparse for me, especially for an ending. Mix is nice, vibe is good. Not much going on the the themes though. Not much going on at all actually, especially after the bridge. 6.5/10 Anorax - Beached Whale in Miami: Intro is nice, not too fond of the vocal samples. Oh wow, brass... works well. Choirs come in for the Sigma Palaca. Things feel a bit empty at the 1-minute mark when the Bubble Cr... eh.. Tidal Makkoeen part sets in. And it's over. Yeah, this one isn't finished by far. However, the setting of the mood was good; this could really become something awesome 4/10 Usa - Requiem for a Reploid: Brass and strings open for a calm, but grand and ominous feeling. Oh, the choirs and harp are a nice addition. Damn, really dramatic openening (which is good)! Sigma Palace theme kicks in at 0:50. Oh the Maverick theme in the pizzicato strings is a nice, but the 1:09 - 1:13 doesn't work that well; perhaps you should've rewritten that. THings beomce a bit more hopeful at 1:17. Part at 1:35 is nice, reminds me a bit of Secret of Mana/SD3. This gets more and more soothing and bright. Playful even at 2:20; gets a bit Danny Elfman here. More Shield Sheldon, which works better in this vibe. Brass hits at 3:01 are a bit thin. Transition to 3:08 is very nice, excellent building up, but I feel the volume should be a bit higher here (especiallyy in contrast with the previous part). Gets more and more intense, but I'm missing an great climax; the transition to the piano (which begins in a different chord) doesnt work too well. Ending is nice though. Great song, excellent "story"/build-up/dynamics! I'm missing a bit of a climax, the second-to-last part could be more intense (choirs or volume), the last transition didn't work too well and there was not very much of the Gauntlet theme throughout 8/10 Cash - Victory at the Palace of Rejects: Hmm... intro sounds a bit empty. Percussion sounds a bit weak, perhaps with a fuller drumkit (or one with mroe punch), this could be better. Background and bass synths are also a bit thin; or perhaps should last a bit longer. And the new synths at 0:42 are completely the opposite Part starting at 1:12 is better: soundscape is a fuller here, a bit more going on. Part at the 2-minute mark is dull; the song is going nowhere at this point imo. The variation at 2:13 is nice, but lacks the full changes in dynamic; a different beat or bassline (or perhaps feel) would be better. Mix drags a bit on around 2:50. Not too much variation afterwards. And I couldn't hear the Gauntlet theme very well The mix feels a bit empty; mostly due to the drums and the thin bass and background synths. Didn;t make out Sigma Palace and the mix lacks dynamics; it drags on a bit around the 3-minute mark 5/10 Ivan Hakštok - Leap of Faith: Epic intro! It's a bit strange that the intro has more power than the part afterwards though. Nice guitar playing. Drums could use some more crunch. Alternating guitar action is nice. Can't make out much of the Gauntlet theme though. Accoustic part is nice, transition to it works well although I hoping for some melodic changes here aswell. Timing of the guitar is loose at parts. Double guitar action is always awesome. Wow sudden ending Sounds good, but lacks a bit of a punch. Couldn't hear the Gauntlet theme and the ending was too sudden. 7/10
  5. I used quite some Spark Mandrill actually. Here's a breakdown: 0:57 - 1:17: Tubular bells play the first part of the Spark Mandrill theme 1:17 - 1:34: The next part of the Spark Mandrill theme, only altered to fit the chords (and I left a small part out) 2:14 - 2:33: The piano and choirs play the background synths/strings of the first part of the Spark Mandrill theme 2:33 - 3:12: Choirs continue doing what they did, but the piano plays the first part of the Spark Mandrill theme So, about one-and-a-half minute of Spark Mandrill EDIT: Didn't have the time to listen to all of the songs yet... Hopefully Shariq won't get mad if I vote tomorrow
  6. Oh wow, cool theme! Man, the gauntlet themes are very different from each other this round. Good luck this week Max!
  7. Came home a little earlier than expected, so I had some time for a little more tweaks. Anyway, it's as good as it's going to get! In other words: subbed! P.S. for those interested: I've tweaked my entry for the first round (extended some parts a bit and did 100% more production) and uploaded in to YouTube:
  8. I just finished the arrangement and have to leave in less than two hours... this is going to be another production marvel
  9. My short reviews: Flexstyle feat. bLiNd - Sins of the Syndicate: Very ominous, but still calming because of the instruments used. I like that you slowed down the Final Weapon theme so much, while still giving it so much more energy (at the 1-minute mark). Gravity Antonitron part mixes well, but I feel the mix starts to drag a bit on there. Holy crap sudden transition (and volume boost) at the 2 minute-mark... didn't count on that. I feel you should've already added changed the pace after the transition, instead of at 2:31. Annnnd fade-out. I especially like the start of the mix (the vibe and build-up is great there). However, nothing much is happening in the part from 1:00 - 1:30, and the part afterwards has less energy and also drags a bit imo. The transition doesn't work optimally. 7/10 Yami - F.I.N.A.L.: Fairly standard EDM-opening; eventually leading to saws for the Final Weapon melody (which does not mesh entirely well with the chosen chords). Wow sudden motionsynth stop at 1:26, something's not right there. The part starting at 1:26 feels a bit empty and doesn't really go anywhere, untill the motion synths enter (real sudden again). Magma Dragoon theme meshes better with chords. I'm missing some sort of climax. The vibe is ok, but the transitions do not work well, and the mix doesn't really go anywhere in the end, it doesn have a climax. Mixing of themes is not really creative 6/10 Tuberz McGee - N0v0r G0nn0 Dj0nt Y0u 0p: Guitars sound a bit muddy. Oh the ones at 0:30 are very clean (production wise). The intro seems very disconnected because of the difference (and thus the themes are not really mixed together well). The Rick Astley part feels a bit forced. The transition at 1:30 works very well, nice bridge. Wow, sudden beat at the 2-minute mark. What is it with sudden transitions this round? This almost feels like a different song. The Rick Astely part at the 3-minute mark works a lot better, although the synth is a bit too loud (or high pitched). Instruments are very muddy again at the 4-minute mark. This track has some nice ideas, but feels unstructured and the parts feel disconnected. Some of the instruments also sound very muddy. 6.5/10 Esperado - Wrong Boss Room: Interestign intro... sounds like a very cheesy alien movie vibe at 0:20 is good, build-up is good with additonal instruments, and a good transition at 0:40. Burn Dinorex part followed by heavier percussion, which works well. Bridge works fine; I have a feeling this is supposed to be the Final Weapon theme, but I can't really make it out. Nice build-up in the bridge, and the sudden transition afterwards works very well. Ending is nice, but I feel it's cut off a bit short. Good remix, good build-up and structure. However, I can't really make out the Final Weapon theme, which is a shame 7.5/10 Jason Covenant feat. Ghetto Lee Lewis & WillRock - Vector Point Engineering Sigma Fortress: Oh wow... This feels Gregorian or something. The timing doesn't always feel right though. Oh, what an epic transition to Blizzard Buffalo... very nicely done. Transition to the dubsteppy-part is also VERY nicely done! Haha and the choirs work surprisingly well here. Ah man, these themes really transition into each other nicely. Again, nice change of dynamics just past the 2-minute mark. The doubling of choirs and guitar (or alteration really) is also nicely done, really epic! I feel like there should be more intensity at 3:30, but there's more of a build-down and a VERY sudden ending. Awesome mix, lots of different dynamics but they blend so well. Not too fond of the ending 9/10 SuperiorX - Release the Kraken: Nice groove, the mix of piano with deep synths work well; although the sound of the piano isn't too good. Trnasition at 1:20 works well. The pianos starting at 1:33 sound robotic; this parts also drags on a bit - the transition is fine though. Ugh, that piano really doesn't sound good. I'm sorry, but as a pianist I can really be bothered by fake sounding piano... and that's the case here The mix is fine is fine, but some alteration in Final Weapon melody in the ending section would've been good. 7/10 YoshiBlade - Eww! Seaweed!: Ai, that first synth doesn't really sound confortable. I like how you've mixed the themes together although it didn't blow me away yet. Mix gets more body at the 1-minute mark. This gets a bit repetitive at 1:30, but you change it shortly after. The build-up to the 2-minute mark is good, but the single bass note with those Toxic Seahorse synths don't work that well and is the same the entire song; you really should've done something different here (with the chords most likely). I like the idea, especially when you mix the themes together, but 80% of the song is the same short melody with synths that don't sound too well, and one bass note. I found it repetetive and missing dynamics. 5/10 Sir_NutS feat. Usa - Space Base: Nice intro, very Shining Hotarunicus-ish. I like your choice of instruments, although it's really classeic Megaman X. Birdge at 1:30 is nice, the chords are quite different though. Hahaha what the hell with the vocoder part - what is it with all you guys trying to mix three songs? Synth solos after the 3-minute mark are awesome. Great mix, great vibe and choice of instruments to really reflect Shining Hotarunicus; vocoder part is crazy, but works. Synth solo is awesome. However, I'm having realy diffiluties hearing the Final Weapon theme 7.5/10 Trism - Celestial Bodies: I like the slow build-up, and the celestial feeling is certainly there! Nice adaptation of the Final Weapon theme. Good transition at 1:50, very serene but steels feels connected to the previous parts. The timing of the marimba sounds a bit loose. Sting Chameleon theme is clearly recognizable, although it's a shame that you have your two themes in such different parts. Drags a bit on at 3:30. Nice mix, adaptation of themes is good, but it's too bad they're featured in such seperate parts. The last part drags on a bit. 7.5/10 jnWake - Sword of the Scavalier: Interesting style-choice for these themes. Works very well with the Final Weapon theme though... The themes follow each other very nicely, they transition very smoothly. Nice change of pace at 1:40. Synth coupling with guitar works nice, lots of dynamic changes in this part. Wow, very different feeling at 2:30... not too fond of the piano here. This part really needs more reverb, it sounds very empty. Thge piano after the 3-minute also misses some intensity, it's the climax! The chord changes at the last part are nice, but this part feels really unpolished. Sudden ending note It's too bad the last part feels so unpolished: the soundscape is too thin, the piano doesn't sound good, I'm missing intensity and the ending is very sudden. The rest of the mix is very good: original style, good adaptations, good transitioning of themes and good changes in dynamic. 7.5/10 timeaus222 - Mind Flip~: The opening is very creepy and ominous, but also has something serene. A calm before the storm... very nicely done. The "break-down effect" is very nicely used, and the turning up the volume of the beat and the guitar is really nice. Transition works very nice, although I would've preferred keepign a more sustaining instrument after this intro. Cyber Peacock feels somewhat more uplifting in the major chords, but that is quickly countered in the part at 1:30... oh I thought for a second that you were going to start with Dancing Mad at 1:40 Transition at the 2-minute mark works well aswell - guitars doubling here is nice; nice build-up and good change in dynamics - also at 2:30. Good ending, lots of energy I really like this one, awesome job tim! Great altering between ominous and BadAss (yes I did it), the transitioning of themes works fairly well and the mix has great dynamics and build-up! 8.5/10

  11. Since "a bit of chords" is practically the only thing the Sigma theme has this week, I fear it's going to be very hard to identify it in this week's mixes. Ah well, we'll see. I'll cast my votes this evening!
  12. I agree with Neblix and Jorito that a week is too little time to familiarize yourself with the feel of a soundtrack and possibly learn to write a remix in a completely new genre. I also think that this competition will not really work as a true competition since it's heavily biased: if I have to make a rock remix I'm at a disadvantage, while games that feature a calmer, accoustic piano soundtrack work in my advantage. However, I do think it's a very good way to get mixers out of their comfort zone and try new things. If it's each month, I would join it
  13. I've been busy with the SFRG Compo and (finally) working on some tracks for my own albums. Aside from that, quite busy with applying for jobs (just finished University) and working part-time for the university. Also, I've been playing my SNES MMX games since I joined the compo, those games keep being awesome to play
  14. Hmmm this source works for an idea I've had for last round. Only then it didn't work out really well let's see how it goes this time. Man, I wish mak was already back, I have way too little time this week

  16. pu_freak - Zero Tolerance Cloud Hopping (Spiral Pegacion in X-Hunter Stage 1 [X2]) Caffeine Shoveling Hunter Turtloids (Rainy Turtloid in X-Hunter Stage 1 [X2]) Laser Power (Shield Sheldon in X-Hunter Stage 1 [X2])
  17. My reviews for this week. I'm not feeling well, so I'm afraid it's not that nuanced or detailed. KingTiger feat. bLiNd - IT'S NOT URSUS: Some Crescent Grizzly in the intro; intro doesn't do a lot for me, the low-fi to regular sound is a bit too long I think and there's too little builing up in my opinion. However, the drop is effective. Variation on the last part of the X-Hunter stage, with the mix sitll feeling a bit empty. Mix loses its energy at 1:20, for a long build-up. At 2:05 it kicks back a bit again, without the build-up having lead to much. Another drop at 2:33, with - again less energy. I feel like you've had three consecutive build-ups without a real pay-off. Build-up at again leads to a drop at 3:23, but this time it flows into a part with more energy. However, the continuation of the same dominant bass note/chord and the standard beat doesn't give this a climactic feel I expected after such a build-up. The part at 4:23 finally has some other parts of the X-Hunter stage; parts with different chords. However, since you don't use the primary notes (I have no idea how to call it differently), it also lacks a bit of the energy. Furthermore, since the bass note/chord stays the same, it doesn't really mesh well. I think this mix really misses dynamics, a better structure and energy. It doesn't sound bad, but it's not going anywhere 6.5/10 Darren Smith - VAAM: Wow, this is glitchy and... weird. A bit too chaotic for my taste, but is certainly has a unique vibe. I have a feeling some of the drums are a bit off in timing; which makes it hard to listen to. I think that the transition to Blast Hornet at 1:09 doesn't flow that well. Crescendo at 1:22 works well. Those low frequencies are flooding my headphones a bit but that could be just my headphones. Oooh I like the final part, nice contrast between the instruments and feeling of the rest of the song. Wow, ending is VERY sudden. Very unique sound, but a bit too unstructured for my taste. I hate to evaluate something with something as subjective as that as conclusion, but it just didn't feel cohesive with a clear goal. 7/10 Jorito - (Don't Wanna) Hurt You: Setting the vibe right away, with the choice of bass synth and the ominous feeling. Excellent layering of intruments so far (this is 0:41). Good transition into Gravity Beetle, while still swtiching dynamics there. Bridge at the 1-minute mark is well done, with a bit less energy, followed by a sudden burst into a fast-paced part with a nice blend of mixes, which I really liked (the transition)! I felt like the drums needed to go double-time at 2:11 to give a better climactic feeling (this is true for the following parts as well). Aside from that, the Rick Astley-vocoder-parts mix nicely with the rest Ending is too sudden for me in this mix as well. Great mix, nice build-up, altought the climax (the last minute or so) really needed a change in drums and more building up, since it's such a long climax. 8/10 ladyWildfire - Tribal Hunter: Nicely built-up, and a nice vibe you're going for. The X-Hunter theme is nicely altered so it meshes really well. I also like the new chord progression. Can't make out much of the Splash Warfly theme out, but that could be because I'm not too familiar with the theme. The birdge is nicely done, altough if you were really going for a tribal feeling you should've used different percussion instruments here. I feel like the part starting from the 2-minute mark are missing some additional instrumentation, a carrying instrument (or vocals as some have already suggested). Awesome vibe, great rearrangement of the X-Hunter theme to fit it. The last part feels like it's missing something though 8/10 Ghetto Lee Lewis feat. Jason Covenant & WillRock - Caffeine Shoveling Hunter Turtloids: After listening to your Maverick theme I already heard some similarities between it and the X-Hunter theme, so this should be good Classic trance intro, works well, although I don't like the sound of the drums there; they're a bit flat. They're good after the intro though. Nice transition into the vocals, works really well. I feel like the decrease in energy comes too swiftly. The build-up afterwards with the guitar works really well, building further up with a small chiptune part, which makes a re-entry in the climax (which I like). Climax also should've lasted a bit longer imo. Nice piano ending (although the last chord is a bit cheesy). Great mix, you've really used your team members' skills well. Great energy, nice blending of sources and good structure. Build-down comes a bit too soon and ending aswell, in my opinion. 8.5/10 Amphibious - Cloud Hopping: I like the groove you're going for, it fits your Maverick theme well. Drums and bass are nicely done, and you somehow made the phased e. piano clearly audible while not cnosuming everything which I always find very hard to do nice dynamics throughout. Good variations in the lead instruments as well, without it being distracting. I also like the creative use of the X-Hunter theme, it works really well! Very well done, the style really fits the Maverick theme well and the X-Hunter theme has been creatively rewritten so it blends in perfectly. Lots of dynamics going on, really keeps in interesting. Awesome job! 9/10 Anorax - Soaked Tapes: Also going for the groove, curious to find out what happens. Oh I am not fond of the instrument that sets in at 0:19... it sounds midi'ish and the timing is a bit off (since it has a build up). The synths afterwards also lack some depth and could be of more quality (especially the ones in the background). There are some timing issues in the 0:40 - 1:00 part. Hmm, this needs a change in pace of dynamics. I am also not fond of the out-of-tune later on. And I'm not really hearing any of the two themes in there. Sorry to be so negative Not fond of this one; I think the instruments aren't good, there are a few timing issues, the piece needs more dynamics and I have a hard time recognizing the themes. 5/10 Usa feat. Sir_NutS - Laser Power: I like the ambient intro, very á la aquatic themes (also caused by the high amount of reverb). Sudden transition works very well, with still "aquatic" sounding instruments accompanying the guitar. Transition to the X-Hunter theme works very well. I was going to say the the X-Hunter theme was very straightforward, but the synth part afterwards nicely solves that problem original stuff also works well, keeping in line with the overall feel but also having different instrumentation and dynamic. Ending is kinda sudden and the song feels a bit too short. Nicely done, good dynamics, nothing too fancy with the themes and a bit soon and abrupt ending 8/10 Supercoolmike - A Centipede's Burden: Hmmm interesting adaptation of the theme, but the dissonance is not really working for me. Glad you changed things at 0:44; the additional instrumentation at 1:00 works well, hoever I felt that a change in pace or energy was needed after this part. At the 2-minute part, the piece begins to drag on a bit. The entry of magna centipede at 2:20 doesn't flow really work, but it works. The inclusion of X-Hunter in the background is nice. The transition at 2:40 doesn't work well imo. The mix then further shifts to a very different feel, and again at 3:09 - it makes the mix feel a bit uncohesive. The change in pace at 3:30 is also an example of that. Ending is not that good either Very creative writing with a unique feel. However, some choices do not work that well, the transitions later on in the mix don't work well imo and the mix misses a change in energy or dynamics to keep it really interesting all the way 6.5/10 The Hiryuu - A Blaze in the Northern Fortress: Wow, this sounds muddy... the guitar are buried in... well nothing actually but they sounds miles away. The timing is really off and the high pitched synths are not really pleasant to listen to. Some synths are also really off-key and the songs feels like it's unintentionally sped up. I'm sorry for the negativety here, but it doesn't sound good to me unfortunatly This song shows a lack of time: it's really muddy, timing's off, some parts are off-kley or do not mesh together and it sounds unnaturally fast. 4/10
  18. I'm real glad you're taking this round, tim. I really wouldn't know what to do with this theme
  19. Subbed! This mix is, in many ways, the complete opposite of my previous entry. Hopefully that's also the case for the votes I get
  20. pu_freak - Zero Tolerance MMMDop (Slash Beast in Doppler Stage 1 [X3]) Thermoception (Dark Necrobat in Doppler Stage 1 [X3]) Is é mo aingeal imithe (Flame Stag in Doppler Stage 1 [X3])
