  1. I used to rent a NES or SNES with one game for a week ((I remember Mario 3, World and Yoshi's Island and the Donkey Kong Country series very fondly) for a long time before I actually owned a console. I was lucky that my dad and brother are also into games, because they bought quite some games for the PC (I think the first time they bought something together was the original Command & Conquer). I think the first time I really bought something for myself was Pokémon Red, after I got my brother's Gameboy. And I think at about the age of 14, I bought a SNES of off ebay with about 7 games on it, which I played waaaaay too much And now my game collection is way too large
  2. The list of suggestions (with some additions) has also been added to the first post!
  3. Hey guys, we'll be using a new feature of OCR called 'clubs', which are basically private forums here on OCR. If you're on our 'own' private forums already, you've gotten an invite for the club.
  4. Keep in mind that The Dark World doesn't really count as a hero theme. So while a cameo is fine, please focus on a main theme. And be sure to keep the vibe heroic (for Paragon) or gritty and raw (for Renegade).
  5. I just wanted to point out what a nice a pleasant discussion/conversation we have here, and thank you for being so open and honest René! Well I don't expect anything, but the connection is something I like most about doing live shows. I do play in a band, so it's not me by myself, meaning I also get the added social benefit of rehearsals. But we usually play at smaller stages for a crowd of friends/acquaintances who bring their own friends or at (free) events that are close to us, making it easier to get to know the audience. I usually stay for a few drinks after we play, and it's really fun to talk to people what they liked and what they didn't like, and just expand your network and get that connection. Granted, this approach is something you need to like to do (networking), but that's really one of the things I like about doing live shows as opposed to making solo tracks digitally. In my opinion it's always too early to make a final judgment about anything I think that talking with peers and showing your music to them (such as here on OCR) can make you more confident and at least get you that personal connection. But making music digitally is just not ideal if you're really looking for a connection. It's very difficult to get your own faithful audience online and even more difficult to have an online group that supports everything you do instead of wanting more of the same. This is something even popular artists on OCR (which I'm not) struggle with their own original works. On the other hand, there are a lot of people in this community who are also more or less socially isolated and were never the popular kids at school, so to say. I'm always surprised by how many artists here (also) have medical issues are other issues that give them a social disadvantage and connecting with them is certainly a good way to get more personal connections - they really understand you. What I'm trying to say is if making music is your dream, don't give up - you can become a professional. I just don't think that it will get you the personal connections your looking for. However, connecting with peers is a way you can get those connections in my opinion.
  6. Interesting read, although I'm a little less disheartened than you are I believe. I think this post has a lot in common with the "do you still make ReMixes" thread of a while back, since it touches upon why you are an artist, and what you expect to get out of it. If you truly want a personal connection with your audience, then I understand the online world can be a little disheartening. I find that the best connections with the audience come from live shows. But, other personal connections I get is with peers, and that is MUCH easier online. Working together with others, getting feedback from judges at OCR, discussing exactly the things we are discussing now - those are valuable things only made possible through the possibilities of an online community and social media. Yes, social media (and/or internet 2.0/3.0) can bring out the worst in people and there is indeed so much content that it makes it hard to stand out. But I have YouTube videos, music, art and more that I frequently enjoy and keep coming back to and I am certainly not alone. Yes, it makes it hard for us to be noticed when there are so many others out there, but without it we wouldn't be noticed at all. I wouldn't be able to be an artist and to do the things I do without these technological developments. Furthermore, I think that we now live in a period where apps and social media rise just to get that personal connection with an artist as long as you are also an artist "offline". Especially here in the Netherlands (where you're also based I see) there are more and more initiatives to be able to meet personally with artists, see niche performances or art and to connect on a deeper level. So while I really recognize and understand the dark side of it all (and we've all had bad experiences), I also think it gives us possibilities that we didn't have before. It's up to us to determine why we do what we do and what we want to get out of it, and then decide on the ideal platform to pursue that. Because just randomly dropping something online (facebook/youtube/wherever) will indeed lead to just a consumerist connection. At least that's what I think of the issues you described P.S. I also have high regards for the "commercial" artists that are perhaps not always the best in their musical skills, but as entrepreneurs and business(wo)men, they have a lot of skills to be able to get where they are. If building a company or a brand is your passion, and you can combine that successfully with an art form, it takes a lot of determination and skills to be able to achieve success and I really respect that.
  7. The last 2? What's wrong with BadAss 1? I usually use Dropbox, but yeah Google Drive or Soundcloud work fine as well! In other news: we have our first two claims! @heymagurany is giving Madeline from Celeste the spotlight she deserves and I am bringing Ezio Auditore da Firenze into the fold! Remember: if you're not a posted mixer, we want an update every month! It doesn't have to be big, but it needs to be something
  8. Please send us your WIPs in PM's; we don't want the songs to be available to the general public yet. We'll take a listen and give you feedback soon!
  9. Yeah it sure does! Are you going for the Paragon or Renegade disc? Sounds good and the genre you have in mind sound good too! Can't wait to receive a first WIP from you so we can officially welcome you to the album!
  10. Yeah, just pick a protagonist theme Mak
  11. Yeah show us a demo of your genre/style (or an example from another song you intend to mimic) to make sure if its eligible! And there won't be a discord, but we do have our own project forums. As for @heymagurany's question: like David (The Joker) said, an area theme is acceptable as long as it's closely linked to a certain hero (think Zelda overworld theme). A Metroid area theme does not follow this, however, so the SR388 Surface theme is not eligible for this album. Like I posted in the OP (in bold) we're shooting for (anti)hero themes!
  12. That sounds good! It's always good to have more BadAss regulars back on the team
  13. So, have you already decided which disc you want to be a part of? In other news: @timaeus222 and @Chernabogue will be joining again as assistant directors! Welcome back guys!
  14. It's time for BadAss to return! David L. Puga and I return to direct BadAss: Paragons and Renegades (title may change). But this isn't your "regular" BadAss; this time the heroes get the spotlight! From the grittiest anti-heroes to the most determined heroes, it's time for the protagonists to show us what they've got! The album itself will have genre restrictions like previous BadAss albums, but with a twist: there's one 'Paragons' disc (mainly directed by me) and one 'Renegades' disc (mainly directed by David), each with a different genre. So let's see who wins while still being a BadAss doing it! The Paragon disc is about adventure, determination and courage. Think of the Chrono Trigger theme, "Flameheart"by Two Steps From Hell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQMpRWuT6hk), and the 'X-Training' theme from X-Men First Class (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUCA6w0Zz-k) but it is certainly not limited by orchestral. Rock themes like the 80s/90s cartoons and shows (Biker Mice from Mars, Power Rangers or Airwolf) are also good examples and electronic music is certainly appreciated as well! Base line: getting you pumped up and ready for adventure! Make sure to send me an example of the vibe you're going for to check if it fits the album! The Renegade disc is more "regular" BadAss style, especially BadAss II. In other words, not the big epic or symphonic rock from BadAss 3 (which is perhaps better suited for the Paragon disc), but raw and gritty is the name of the game and rock and dark electronic music will be the go-to style here. We want to show the world that protagonists can be at least as BadAss as the bosses, so let their inner darkness out on this side of the album! For references (and awesome music), check out BadAss 2. Be sure to check in with David if you want to make a mix for this disc! More details will follow, but we're aiming for about 20 tracks (balanced between the discs) and we want to complete this in about a year (BadAss 3 took 14 months to be sent to eval, so let's see if we can do it in 12 this time around!). And suffice to say, only (anti-)hero themes are eligible this time around! Are you going to be part of the next BadAss album? Let's see if you've got what it takes! Directors: David L. Puga (The Joker) Pavos Audio Engineer: Stevo Bortz (Level99) Tracklist (18): Paragon (9): "The Hidden Ones (Assassin's Creed 2 & Origins - Ezio & Bayek)" by Pavos "Time Warrior (Chrono Trigger - Crono)" by Sam Dillard "Chariot of the Moon (Final Fantasy 4 - Cecil)" by Rebecca E Tripp "Revenge on the Terror From The Deep (Chrono Trigger - Magus)" by Audio Mocha & Pandora's Bread "Human After All (Sundered - Eshe)" by David L. 15. Sometimes with movies, you don't just have an awesome theme, but there's also a brilliant "suite" on the soundtrack that takes you through many of the different tracks in a great journey. This is that suite. Amazing stuff from all involved and it's great to hear all of these live performances! Epic stuff guys!
  16. Congrats on the release of the album! It seems like a few albums that have been released lately really only could be released because of the determination of the hard working staff - well done on seeing this through Darkflamewolf and Modus! And to Jorito & friends: stop making the rest of us look bad with those 13+ minute epics ;P
  17. I have to say the Mass Effect trilogy. Alright, I know the first one came out in 2007, but the other two were released this decade (with ME2 being my favorite). It had its flaws and you can feel about that ending however you want, but I've rarely played a game which such immersion and focus on characters. And I really think the trilogy effect (that your choices affect the next game) is a big part of that.
  18. Thanks for the awesome compliments! I hope you keep enjoying my mixes (and the rest of the SD3 album as well of course); I think my two tracks on this album are the best ones I've written so far
  19. It's alive! Congrats everyone (especially Rozo and Meteo) for still making this happen!
  20. Yeah man, your perseverance is highly admirable! Many would've quit ages ago
  21. Awesome trailer! so... I guess the album is real then? :p
  22. I do enjoy making remixes, but I already like to play songs on the piano (or guitar these days) that I have stuck in my head. In my opinion, making a remix of that song is just the next step in that process. That being said, the vast majority of remixes I make will never see the light or day or are never finished. But if I feel good about one, I do enjoy releasing it to be able to share my nostalgia. I like working on original music as well, but for me that scratches an entirely different itch.
  23. Oh wow, that's lame. Nobody should profit from BadAss except we as directors ;P Have you contacted Polar Eclipse yet?
  24. I'm afraid I'll have to drop my claim on this... perhaps I'll rejoin if there's still something up for grabs in a few weeks. Sorry guys
