  1. Man, Malcos' entry was my favorite back during the VOCR competition, and it blew my entry out of the water. Malcos' voice is decidedly sexy, and he did some awesome work on not only the original melodies and harmonies, but the lyrics themselves, which I don't think any of the other entries really matched up to (mine included). I agree with Andrew that the original melodies can be a little prominent over the source at times, but it's a pretty small issue. Other than that, nice work, and I'm glad this finally made it's way to the inbox! YES
  2. - Crazy Calypso - Pokey PipesI had to listen to this a few times, but I'm on Vinnie's side for this. There are some hints at the source here and there, but honestly you would have to know the sources super well to get a lot of the references; they are too vague for me. I like listening to this, but there's not enough source for me. NO
  3. Right now it feels like the balance of the instruments is off, and it's throwing off my focus. That first synth is also pretty piercing, and needs to be toned down a bit. What I noticed after listening a couple times to this is that it takes almost 3 minutes before you make the first truly solid connection to the main source melody. Even though there are plenty of hints to it throughout, the track might benefit from hearing it earlier than the last quarter of the piece. I like a lot of the elements going on, although once the track establishes it's groove, it doesn't really build anymore (or less) which makes things a tad static after a while. That might be the issue Andrew is having overall, as well. The production is really holding things back, although it wouldn't hurt to look at the arrangement as well. I think you are on the right track here, though. NO (resubmit)
  4. Andrew's pretty much got this covered. I can hear the references to the source, but because it is so heavily altered, it would be tough for me to make a connection if I had heard this without knowing what it was from. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to do some heavy alteration, but I think it is just too often here, and that's where you lose your audience. Consider revamping some of the parts to be closer to the original to really make the connection more solid. Production is not bad, but the mechanical feel of the opening makes this track feel a little too stiff, and as Andrew again said, the balance is little off where the melody is being overpowered. NO (resubmit)

Feedback indicated that it was too conservative, so I was trying to switch it up a bit when I realized I could put the Song of Storms on top of the Song of Healing chords, and the Bolero of Fire fit in nicely. My little brother found this amusing, so I smashed as many songs as I could in the Song of Healing to make him laugh. I decided some of it had potential, so after many adjustments, here it is, with thanks to Rozovian, who was kind enough to render it for me. As for the title, while I play the newer Legend of Zelda games, I miss the ocarina. This song includes most of my favorite ocarina songs and brings back fond memories. (Rozovian wishes to be included in the writeup rather than as a collaborator.) - I thought an overview may help any judges who are not familiar with the sources: 0:00 - 0:18 -- Song of Storms 0:19 - 0:28 -- Song of Storms, Song of Healing chord progression 0:29 - 0:31 -- Bolero of Fire, Song of Healing chord progression 0:32 - 0:34 -- Song of Storms, Song of Healing chord progression 0:35 - 0:38 -- Serenade of Water, Song of Healing chord progression 0:38 - 1:18 -- Song of Healing 1:18 - 1:21 -- Gohdan, Song of Healing chord progression 1:22 - 1:24 -- Inverted Song of Time, Song of Healing chord progression 1:25 - 1:26 -- Shooting Gallery, Song of Healing chord progression 1:27 - 1:29 -- Song of Time, Song of Healing chord progression 1:30 - 1:31 -- Gohdan, Song of Healing chord progression 1:32 - 1:33 -- Kokori Forest, Song of Healing chord progression 1:34 -- Epona's song, Song of Healing chord progression 1:35 - 1:40 -- Song of Healing 1:41 - 1:47 -- Sun's Song 1:48 - 1:58 -- Song of Healing 1:59 - 2:11 -- Song of Storms 2:12 - 2:14 -- Song of Time 2:15 - 2:31 -- Serenade of Water - (I see some composer and game information already on the site, so I did not include it.) --------------------------------- - Song of Storms - Song of Healing - Bolero of Fire - Serenade of Water - Gohdan - Song of Time - Song of Time (for real) - Shooting Gallery - Kokiri forest - Epona's song - Sun Song
  7. So... another submission. Title: Let It Beat Your ReMixer name: Brandon Strader, Usa Your real name: Brandon E. Strader, Daniel Lippert Your email address: oinkness@gmail.com Your website: http://brandon.rainwound.com/ Your userid: 3123 Name of game(s) arranged: Donkey Kong Country 3 Name of individual song(s) arranged: Dixie Beat PROJECT TRACK -- DKC 3: The Album, by Emunator Link to the original soundtrack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIN0FikcicI No need for source breakdown, fairly straightforward mix. This is another one of those songs I revised over 9000 times. Emunator is a slave driver, and when confronted with this fact, he laughed. It's like that scene from the beginning of Blazing Saddles. Anyway, what can I really say about this song? I revised it so many times that I hate it and just want it to be over with. Usa is on the drums, I think he did a fantastic job. He also mastered my WAV. The title is inspired by The Beatles, since the progression in Dixie Beat is very similar to their song "Let It Be". It might speed up into a "punk" section but it's still generally the progression from Dixie Beat. The original demo was better, and had a great live sound. This.... this.. this is revised into studio magic hell! It's TOO refined. And that makes me sad. -------------------------

  9. Hi OCR! Song Title: Time Fusion ReMixer: Robin Salonen Real name: Robin Salonen Email: robin.salonen@gmail.com website: www.robinsalonen.com userID: 38303 Game arranged: Chrono Trigger Name of song: Main theme Composer: Yasunori Mitsuda Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIO1sajyx_o Starting out by saying that this is my first ever remix, but I'm still quite happy with it and decided to submit to OCR to see if it meets your standards, and if not I have learned something valuable and what to think of next time I have something to share. Inspired by the works of remixer Joshua Morse I wanted to create something in a similar Jazz-fusion / funk style. It was the first time I did something in this style aswell which was a bit of a challange. I'm aware this is a track remixed many many times before, but I still like the theme alot and wanted to create my own version of it. Composed and mixed using Cubase. I hope you enjoy it! Best regards, Robin ----------------------
  10. Project mix If accepted, it's up to you guys whether it goes under "Pokemon Gold/Silver" (The original games) or "Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver" (The remakes) I based the remix on the original. Here are the sources: Original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsZVvnxlKeY& Remake: Song is called "Ice Cavern" or "Dark Cave" depending on who you ask. ReMix information: My first ReMix since finally purchasing a music-capable computer. It's made mostly with Spectrasonics Omnisphere and Stylus RMX, with some default FLStudio sounds in there. I remixed this one a while ago, but felt like having another go. The cool bassline from the original is what it was all about, and they removed it from the remake, so I centred this remix on making that bassline as hardcore as I could. If the bass is either too muddy or too quiet, let me know which way so I can fix it. I'm mixing without a subwoofer for the first time since my speakers somehow broke in the move to my new house. I think it's ok. But it'll take some getting used to the calibration. - Lee V. Barber -------------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsZVvnxlKeY&feature=player_embedded#! (GB Ver) (DS Ver)

Contact Information Blue Magic Damon Campbell http://www.angelfire.com/blues2/bluemagic 9378 Submission Information Donkey Kong Country 3 (GBA) Waterfalls/Cascade Capers Original Song: Comments: This mix is part of the DKC3 Double Trouble Soundtrack. I was really feeling the original when I first heard it. I was fortunate to have a couple of original songs that I felt could work very well with the Waterfall theme. So, I put them all together, and this is what I ended up with. I also worked with a few of my newer samples and VSTs to create a more unique style of music, compared to my previous works. Many thanks to Emunator for including me in this awesome soundtrack and thank you all for taking the time to listen to my work. The mix is posted on my webpage above. ---------------------------------- This is a very personalized version of the song, and I really enjoyed listening to this one. I liked the incorporation of original material; it fit in very well and added to the overall structure and feel of the track. The soundscape is nice, and the choice of instruments works well. The song does get a tad repetitious near the end. There isn't much in the way of dynamic contrast, which would have been a nice addition, although it isn't overly missing out without too much change. Otherwise, production is pretty good. Very laid back, like I'm relaxing at a beach with a waterfall nearby and a strawberry daiquiri on hand. YES

Your own comments about the mix, for example the inspiration behind it, how it was made, etc.: This is my third submission to the panel. It's a remix I did for the Seiken Densetsu 3 Project (Songs of Light and Darkness), so if it passes it shouldn't be posted until the project is out! Now that I've got the disclaimer of the way, here are my thoughts on the remix: I distinctly remembered the source track from the game since you spend so much time in various villages buying equipment and sleeping at the inn, and hearing it has always given me the impression of standing in the middle of a village fair. Everyone is speaking, you can hear various animal sounds, merchants yelling, children laughing, the sun is shining and a stream is bubbling nearby, while on the nearby meadows tons of butterflies fly around. It all seemed very folkish and naturey, so naturally I chose to make a very carefree-sounding remix, full of "bright" instruments (the harp, the piccolo , the piano and so forth). I decided to make it a bit slower than the original (except for the ending part), to make it sound more like a peaceful fair and less like chasing a mischievous sprite through a village. I added some recorder and some Irish low whistle to achieve a more medieval sound, plus some bassoon, just because I love the way it sounds, so fat, clumsy and grumpy! Enjoy! Regards J. ----------------- (btw, check out the YT comment)
  14. The overall treatment of the source is pretty good here. There's some decent expansion on the original, which is nice. I'm going to have to agree with OA that while there's a lot of good stuff going on, I never really felt the song climax and get that edge that would really make it shine. I will also agree that the stop transition near the middle is pretty awkward, and really needs some work. Similarly, there isn't anything inherently wrong with the production, but I feel like the leads aren't shining as much as they could, which might be what's drawing away the overall energy. It's close, but it needs that push of energy to really bring this one to life. Keep working on it! NO (please resubmit)
  15. The theme is pretty catchy, it's always good when you're working with a good source. I think the buildup takes too long to fully evolve into the song. I think you could cut out about a quarter of the intro and the faster build will help the song focus a little more. Overall the sounds are pretty standard, which isn't a bad thing, although it would have been nice to hear something a little outside the box somewhere in there. As Andrew mentioned, one of the biggest issues is that the track gets repetitive. I was hoping there would be more variation in some of the repeats of the chorus section. Otherwise, you could probably cut out a couple times through the chorus that are closer to others, which would again add a little more focus to the track. The production is alright, although there are times when things are a tad crowded. Certainly nothing that makes things uncomfortable, but just a little noticeable. The vocoded section at the end is a nice touch. This is on it's way, but it's not quite ready yet. NO (resubmit)
  16. OA covered everything I wanted to say. I was really feeling this throughout, and I enjoyed how you used the source themes over a new chord structure. The style works really well for this, and the synths are well chosen. My one gripe is the brass sample near the end sounds super fake compared to everything else, which is a shame, but certainly not a dealbraker. Nicely done, YES
  17. Honestly, this arrangement is awesome. There are so many elements used quite well here. The tempo changes, which are generally hard to do, are performed really well, and more than once I had a vibe in my head.Production is clean, and as Andrew alludes to, it's difficult to tell what is sampled and what is real at times. Great work. YES
  18. I found this arrangement to be solid throughout. There were very few times (aside from the intro and outtro, both which do not extend for too long) that I couldn't recognize any source and there was plenty of expansion on the themes. Sound choices and production were also very sound. The breakdown is easily my favorite part, and offers a good break from the beatz. Love the adaption of this to club. YES
  19. This is a great mix to listen to. The arrangement is very strong, and as Andrew mentioned, there were times where the source is hinted at but overused. I am worried that the connection to the source might be a little low for some of the judges' tastes, but I had no issue with it personally. Production is strong, and there is good use of balance and dynamics throughout. I could see this being used in a trailer, just like you said. YES
  20. In terms of arrangement, I think Andrew is exactly right. Because we are hearing the same source so often, it starts to wear thin. There are quite a lot of variations here, and some work a lot better than others. It would be beneficial to go through and cull out some of the times that don't work as well to let the other variations shine in a shorter time span. I'm noticing that there isn't much in the way of dynamic variation. I think this could be another reason that the song seems to go on so long, is that sonically you are sticking on the same (relatively) short source, at the same dynamic level. It just kind of tires out the ears after a while, even though the variations and arrangement are good. I can see this really being a good piano mix, but you need to work on the arrangement to really get it to shine. NO (resubmit)
  21. When the song started, I honestly wasn't that impressed with where you were going with it by having the pan flute play the original melody pretty much verbatim, but I quickly changed my mind as you started introducing new instruments and the arrangement really got underway. I really like the overall arrangement, and although it could be expanded further, I don't necessarily thing it is too short. Production is the key to this one, and right now it's falling short. As both gentlemen mentioned, the pan flute really needs some work to give it life, like what you hear out of the flute at the end. Otherwise, the overall song feels somewhat overcrowded. I'd love to hear you relook at this to make things clearer. This is a pretty good first submission, please look it over and send it back our way! NO (resubmit, please)
  22. Vinnie hit essentially what I was going to say with better wording and advice. The arrangement is overall some nice work, but the production has a few issues that are really holding things back. My biggest issue was the overall muddiness of the track, and then things starting to sound awkwardly crowded. Along with that, the reverb and compression aren't at the levels they need to be. I think this is where it needs to be for arrangement, but without those production fixes it can't achieve it's potential. NO (resubmit)
  23. The opening is pretty cool; I liked the ominous feel, and it really reflected the title. After that the menace seems to lose some edge. Part of it comes from the samples being a little thin, and the overall soundscape being thin as well. The drums need to have a little more power to push things more as well. Overall this needs more power! While there isn't much to add to what Vinnie and Andrew already pointed out, I would like to offer some encouragement. I know I could not have made anything like this when I was 13. Keep at it, you can definitely improve, and I will look forward to hearing another submission from you! NO (resubmit)
  24. I agree with Andrew that the guitar playing is really nice, and the arrangement is in itself very good, but the source is pretty sparse in here. I don't think it's so sparse as to not be recognized, but I would have liked to hear just a little bit more of it throughout. To me the violin sample is very mechanical, and it sounds fake compared to the guitar sound. If it had been more alone, I think I wouldn't be so against it, but here it seems to stick out more than it should. I'd like to see that addressed. I agree with Andrew on the reverb blending a little bit as well. While each problem isn't big on it's own, I think this one is just under the bar for me. I'd love to see this one again, though, after it's fixed up. NO (resubmit)
  25. The overall sound for this is pretty awesome. Koopa is seriously ready to kick some ass with this music. My biggest issue is the copy and paste that has been done in a few sections. Like Andrew said, there are other sections and enough variation to get this over the bar, but it's pretty disappointing that there are those sections reused verbatim when so many awesome things could have been done. I hope that in the future you will rally make a unique arrangement throughout. This is going to have to be re-encoded at a higher bit-rate to pass as well, which will hopefully improve some of the sounds overall. YES (somewhat borderline)(conditional on bit-rate)
