  1. Hello to the team at Overclocked Remix! My name is Josh, and this will be my first submission to your kick ass site. I've done my best to adhere to your Submission Standards and Instructions guide. Fingers crossed I get this right The following is my attempt at remixing Donkey Kong Land's Bad Boss Boogie. I have titled my arrangement 'Don't Touch My Na-Nas' The ~192kbps mp3 is available here: It can also be listened to and downloaded via soundcloud And Youtube: Contact Information: Remixer Name: KoeN Real Name: Josh Koen Email Address: jkoen@csu.edu.au Website: www.youtube.com/joshkoen User ID: 40244 Submission Information: Name of game arranged: Donkey Kong Land Name of track arranged: Bad Boss Boogie Additional Information: Composed by Graeme Norgate for the Nintendo Gameboy version of Donkey Kong Land Link to the Original Soundtrack: My Comments: The forthcoming Nintendo Wii Donkey Kong title had me reminiscing about some of my favourite classic Donkey Kong series compositions. This track has always really psyched me up in spite of the obvious restrictions of the Gameboy's sound capabilities. As a kid I always envisioned DIRTIER, GRITTIER version of my favourite games; I guess I always dreamed of games growing WITH me as I got older (picture a Donkey Kong or Zelda title Co-Directed by Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez!) This song is the soundtrack to that vision. It starts quite sombre, but its ending packs quite a punch; it would almost suit a cinematic preview of a new bad-ass Donkey Kong Film! My workstation of choice in this instance was Ableton Live. The drums are recorded using my Yamaha DTXPLORER electronic drumkit and Toontracks' Superior Drummer. The bass is a combination of Trillian VST and my bass guitar, and the guitar itself is an old Yamaha Pacifica 6 string electric run through an instance of Native Instruments' Guitar Rig. The remaining instrumentation was all pieced together using a midi keyboard and a variety of virtual instruments, most notably content from the Kontakt 4 library. I hope you enjoy! Please let me know if you require any further information! Thanks Josh ----------------------

Contact Information Your ReMixer name: pu_freak Your real name: Pieter van Os Your email address: pu_freak@hotmail.com Your userid: 12491 Submission Information Name of game(s) arranged: Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow, Gold/Silver (I guess it's been in every pokémon gameboy game, it's the theme of the pokémon stadium games and it's been in Super Smash Bros games) Name of individual song(s) arranged: Gym Link to the original soundtrack: Your own comments about the mix: This mix is part of the Pokémon album, The Missingno Tracks. I really wanted this theme to be on the album, because it's been in nearly every pokémon game and everybody knows this theme. The theme just before you challenge the gym leader, wondering if you're strong enough to be able to defeat the gym leader or perhaps if you should've trained some more. When you're challenged by all of the gym's 'normal' trainers when you can already see the gym leader standing in the distance. But, instead of trying to create an epic, heroic version of the theme, I wanted to create an empty, creepy version of it. Like you came back to the gym twenty years later, only discovering that it has been abandoned for several years. It's all in decay now, you see (and hear) things you seem to recognize, but it's all more distorted than it was in your memory. I tried to use this by having a very empty lead most of the time, backed up by choirs and strings and of course, by using mainly minor chords instead of the usual major ones. At the end, I give a small hint of the original theme with a music box, but then end with a minor chord. ReMix Name of the ReMix: Abandoned Battlefield ---------------------------

  4. Hello OCremix, Below is my contact and submission information. Before I start I'd like to extend my appreciation for your website, and bringing credibility and seriousness to the art of gaming music, and for all of the great music and projects it has inspired and produced. ReMixer Name: DoctorDevmo Real Name: Devin Polaski Email: devinpolaski@gmail.com Website: www.devinpolaski.com Submission Info: Game: Sonic the Hedgehog 1 Song Arranged: Scrap Brain Zone Comments: I am a composer for film and video productions, and am used to creating a lot of epic, orchestral-influenced music for different movies. But ever since I was 4 years old I've been obsessed with Sonic the Hedgehog, and gaming in general. Strangely enough I've hardly married my love for gaming with my film music, and I was finally driven towards making this song for a fan game. I've always loved the Genesis FM synthesis instruments in the Sonic games, but with this I wanted to approach it from a more serious, realistic approach, to really convert the song from catchy to epic. I also drew inspiration from some of the music from Sonic Unleashed, which is interesting in that the style reflects the part of the world it represents. I wanted to take on a 'world music' approach with this song by including more African-styled drum kits and Indian-influenced string instruments. This song was created entirely in Logic Pro. Feel free to leave me any feedback on the song, and also to visit my website, where you can view my other music and video creations. Thank you very much for your time, and I will be eagerly awaiting the results. Talk to you later, and keep up the amazing work with the website! Sincerely, Devin ---------------------

  6. This is my remix of the infamous Team Japan track from Super Dodgeball for the 'Around the World' OCR Project with the 'Sakura, Sakura' Melody that is used as a teaching method on the Koto and other stringed instruments in Japan. Its a very famous folksong in that land also showing its head in other games of the NES days, even Mike Tyson's Punchout on Piston Honda's intro. When I heard the Super Dodgeball version it just REALLY caught me and I had to make a killer mix of it. I even got the attention of the famous Deadmau5 when he opened submissions for mau5trap. You can hear it here (it is an early version of the track) http://soundcloud.com/fuckmylife/favorites?page=2 He was on stickam (video chat) and started asking me how I did things and the chatroom exploded with jealous rage. An interesting moment for me but also a confirmation that the professional dance world isn't too far away from OCReMix and its dance music. He actually wanted to sign me to mau5trap but of all 12 tracks he marked for signing, he forgot about them and ended up focusing on his tour instead which is understandable. I finished the track as I broadcasted me working on my own stickam channel with a small audience from OCR. I asked if anyone knew where I could get someone talking about sakura trees in Japanese and Per Lichtman found this website with audiobooks. http://ikeda-hideo.hp.infoseek.co.jp/license_e.html So that is where the sample is from. This is also the text for the sample http://www.aozora.gr.jp/cards/000074/files/427_19793.html Roughly translate he is talking about how beautiful the Sakura Trees are and it might be because of the burried corpses under them. It fits the track well anyway. The bassline is rockin and will definitely want to make you bounce. I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I did making it. PS - This track has a lot of meaning it seems. Global Trance sent Jade a birthday gift of a TMNT shirt and sent me a shirt as well because of this track. Not to dodge the sakura but to rest under it http://s3.amazonaws.com/wootsaleimages/Sakura_Samuraih1vDetail.png bLiNd -------------------------
  7. Considering the length of the source, there is a heck of a decent amount of expansion. That being said, this does carry on a little long for my tastes. I think cutting out 45 seconds to a minute could have achieved a more condensed, compact result that would have had the right amount of expansion and variations vs. repetition. Personally, I enjoyed it anyways!
  8. Agreed with OA on this. It's liberal for sure, and while I voted no, I still found this very enjoyable to listen to. Certainly worth checking out!
  9. So there are some vocal RockMan songs that I've always enjoyed. ELECTRICAL COMMUNICATION (Yes, it has to be in all caps) Japanese opening to RockMan X4
  10. Mr. Lemon brings a nice, upbeat track for us to listen to. I'm hearing a lot of your style that is similar from what I heard on the Essence of Lime project. Plenty of source usage here, and I like all the subtle doubling you use between the main synth and the xylophone. The transition at 1:56 was a little odd, and didn't really fit into the arrangement as well as a breakdown should have, but the speed up back into the A tempo was fine. The melodies could have used a little more variation at times, it started to feel a tad repetitious after a while. Nice use of panning for small effects, and the overall balance is good. Overall I felt like the low end could have had a little more presence, but it's not desperately needed. Super happy! YES (How do you spelunk in space anyways?)
  11. Not much to say about this one. You've got your typical Halc style going on, using and abusing the chip sounds with some more organic sounds. The source is incorporated nicely, and I like the chill, 'spa resort', feel. Sliding the pitch around makes things feel very wavering, which adds to the overall depth (get it?). I'm not totally crazy about the transition to the slower tempo at the end, it felt a little awkward. Sounds good, although I'm looking forward to hearing you expand more on your styles! YES
  12. Oh, come now, no one wants to review "Ghosts 'n Condoms"?
  13. Pretty natural way to take the opening track. I think there's a lot of good things going on here, and overall you've got a pretty badass sound going on. The arrangement is good overall, although I feel like it gets a lack of sonic change starts to wear out my ears near the end. A breakdown somewhere in the middle might have helped out. Solos feel natural, and I like the guitar patterns going on. The key change is pretty sudden, and kind of awkward. The bass drum could use a little more cutting power, and I think the lead guitar could be brought up just a tad. I'll chew some gum to this one. YES
  14. I think Andrew's pretty much got this. There's a lot of good stuff going on here, but the source is just a little too sparse for it to really stick with me. There were a few times where you were able to really pull the source in in nice ways, and more of that would push it over the edge for me. NO (resubmit)
  15. Going to have to agree with Andrew on this one. Honestly an enjoyable song to listen to, but without the source really showing through, I'm going to have to pass on this for now. I hope you relook at this and add that bit to put it over the edge here! Vote changed below
  16. As usual, we've got a solid submission from our max-leveled character here. I do have to say, whether it's because I'm used to it or just like it better, I prefer the non-vocoded version to this one. This still works quite nicely, and I liked hearing how you incorporated the source into this so fluidly. There were a couple spots where vocal intonation is just a little off (Hey! Dreamer! at the end sticks out the most), but it's certainly nothing dealbreaking. The sleighbells at the end felt a little superfluous at the end, but again it might be more because I was used to the original. I felt like the bass drum could have had a little more punch, and the rhythm guitars are a bit difficult to hear at times. Overall, nice work. YES
  17. Thought about this one for quite a while, and I came to this conclusion: I just don't see it being possible to remix a source of 4 notes and have it be recognizable as a game remix. I'm skeptical that anyone would say 'Hey, this is from Space Invaders!' after listening to it. On the good side, I really like listening to this, and plan to keep it in my playlist. I just can't hear it as a remix. NO
  18. This one brought a smile to my face when I judged it, and it still does now. Great idea for source adaption, and just super fun to listen to. We need more artists to think outside the box more like this.
  19. I was taking a look (and doing a bit of reviewing myself) and noticed that we are nearly back to every track on the site having at least 10 reviews. This is fantastic, and it makes me very happy inside. Nice work everyone!
  20. Overall, not feeling this song as much as the others on the album, but I think that is more based on the source itself than Morse's take on it. I do like that he took a challenge and went with it, and came out with a successful mix none-the-less. Overall it's a bit hectic, which works in it's own way, and is pretty cool. Not my favorite, but still an enjoyable listen.
  21. I love how eclectic this is. Sebastian really knows how to work things in his favor, and I think he really did capture the Blue Mage really well with this mix. The combinations of synths works great, and it's just overall fun to listen to. Nice work, as always!
  22. I went pretty back-and-forth on this. The arrangement is pretty good, and expands on the style of the original. There's a decent amount of soloing in here, but it returns to the source very often, and keeps pretty consistent. I think the issue here is that overall it feels a little plain. For example, a lot of the background patterns, like the piano, are used without much change in them. There isn't much change in terms of dynamic, and the energy gets static after a while. I think hitting those sorts of little details are needed for something like this, where the source itself is pretty bleh (IMO). Some sections feel a little mechanical, the piano especially. Drums have some variations, but get stuck on the same pattern a lot, which could use some pizazz as well. Aside from those issues, there isn't much to fault on production that I can hear. There's a lot of potential here and it's great for the project, but it's just not at the level it needs to be for the site. NO (resubmit)
  23. I have to say, I was not expecting a submission in this style from you, despite your penchant for not staying in the same style for any of your past submissions. I was pleasantly surprised on this one. Overall the actual arrangement of the source is a lot more conservative, as you said, but I think you made the backing and overall style change pretty fluid. I do have to say that a lot of things here feel mechanical, although I honestly am not sure if I find it a drawback or not. Once the background stuff gets going, though, it kinda hits autopilot at times, I wish you'd added a little more variety in here and there. Overall, I think this one passes the bar, although it's a little close. Good luck with the rest of the votes! YES
