  1. The piano at the start gives off a bit of a bad impression for the rest of the mix, but once you get past that things pick up. The arrangement is solid, with the original material fitting in well vs. source material. I'm not as crazy about the samples as Andrew is, but I think they are better than average. As Andrew mentioned, the guitar is a little weak, but is used effectively. Overall, I am comfortable passing this. Nice work. YES
  2. Couldn't agree with Andrew more here: awesome song, but there just isn't enough source in here. I'd love for you to revisit this and fix it up, but if you don't, it's still great to listen to. NO (resubmit)
  3. Pretty cool source from a game you wouldn't have expected it. Mr. Wilson looks HELLA creepy, by the way. I like where you've taken the track, the style change is done well and the arrangement is pretty solid. I can see Larry's point on the overall sounds starting to just wear on you after a while, but I don't think it's too bad. Nice work picking an obscure game and giving us a good mix out of it! YES
  4. This is just fun. Love how you took this from the original and made it so completely different. Original material fits perfectly with the arrangement, as well. Playing is excellent, and the production is pretty clean. Yee-haw!
  5. Same as DarkeSword, I occasionally see where my music has ended up. The two weird ones are from Summoner's Love. This one features a guy 'singing' to his love through Runescape. I can't get over the fact that he writes "na na na na na na" as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vrbbgw9Kgag And then there's the video featuring the two lesbians in Sailor Moon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvzkhNgGgsk&feature=related ----- Then there's all the innuendos in Banjo Kazooie: What is this I don't even...
  6. Not much to add to the detailed votes of the gentlemen above. The arrangement is fantastic, and passes by very quickly for an 8+min arrangement. The only drawback I'm hearing is the instruments not being the most realistic, but compared to the arrangement they still hold their weight pretty well. Very impressive. YES
  7. I think you've got a good idea here, but right now it's not quite developed enough for OCR. Things are a little simplistic right now; there is the style change, but the melodies themselves are pretty straight from the source, as well as the chords. As OA mentioned, things are a little blocky, even with the gated synths. Combining that with the fairly generic sounds makes the whole song feel simpler than it is, if that makes sense. The transitions to and from Dearly Beloved need some work as well. Things are a bit overcompressed, as Andrew mentioned, although it isn't super bad. Pull it back a little and that will help. I think arrangement is the biggest issue, but there are some other points that need to be addressed. It's a good start, and I would use the WIP forums to get some additional feedback before resubmitting. NO (resubmit)
  8. I think that despite the low amount of source in here, this comes across pretty instantly as Sonic music. Some of it is the sound affects, but a lot of it is the style you approached it with, and how often you return to the source. I love the funky feel throughout. I wish there had been a bit more dynamic variation, because the track feels just a little static at times, and that could have helped, but it is pretty minor. Production is nice, as well as the overall balance. Funktastic. YES
  9. I love how you used the original in this, and expanded upon it. As Larry mentioned, using the 8-note pattern creates a solid background that you really used to your advantage. YES
  10. This song is about 7 years old and dates back to my college days when I was emulating some SNES classics, and upon playing harvest moon I noticed myself humming the themes of each season as I was playing along rushing to stuff turnips and tomatoes into my outbox. Feeling compelled to compose my own version of this music I fell back on my love of Woody Guthrie, Lightnin' Hopkins and Mississippi John Hurt to compose a guitar and vocal arrangement with a reflection on blues and folk styles that emerged out of the American South around the turn of the century. Years and Years ago I submitted the song to which I think I got a rejection. Understandable because the original track was more or less a scratch recording. Since that time I joined a band in Paramus New Jersey called Steel Battalion. We performed several gigs around the North Jersey and NYC area. On one night we found ourselves short one song in the set list so I played this track for them and the band immediately took to it. Since that time we used some studio time to record and one of the songs that were insisted upon recording (Against my own objection in fact) was four seasons of the blues. Independent recording artist Chris Sulit gave us recording time, and Rob Janos our bland leader made sure that the historical sound of the song was preserved, and made arrangements on mandolin, a silvertone acoustic, and even a Magnus chord-organ. Our good friend and collaborator Sunil Caris provided backing vocals simultaneously with me in order to conveyed the shared microphone sound of Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. So here is Four seasons of the blues for a second submission. Here is all the vital information. Knapp OCremix ID - 26628 Game Source - Final Fantasy 6 (SNES) Track Source - Magic House Source at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUp2aBnTICM This remix does have portions of some of the original source material, but a significant amount of original content has been added to it. The piece starts off with some playful adventure music, and as the heroes venture further into the magic house, the paintings come alive to attack them. The attack portion is followed by an eerie sounding outro. I tried to use the outro to convey the final moments of approaching the last painting Relm was working on in Owzer's basement. This is my dance remix of the Prelude. Usually, I never go past 30 seconds on remix, but I dunno what happened with this one. This is the longest, fastest, and best piece of work I've ever made. (it took 2 days) This mix started with me playing with the new Harmless synthesizer by Image-Line. The sound I made from scratch was originally a pad, but then I turned it into an arp synth when I got an idea for the prelude. It just went on from there. Enjoy! At the time of this submission, I'm 14, but I'll most likely be 15 if and when this gets posted. Synths used: Sytrus (Thanks to Shariq for buying it for the both of us) Zebra2 (Thanks to Zircon for making tutorials about it) Harmless (Thanks to Shariq for buying it for the both of us) TS404 Other stuff: Kontakt 4 Player Kore Player Harp soundfont Various electro precussion samples FL drum loop with compression, distortion, etc. ------------------------------------
  14. Remix: Skyggesang - Entranced Amidst Thorns ReMixer name: Skyggesang Real name: Alex Melching Website: www.myspace.com/skyggesang User ID: 32069 Name of game arranged: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Name of individual song arranged: Bryyo File format: mp3, 196 kpbs, 44100 Hz stereo, 6,32 MB hard disk space Track length: 04:36 Background: First of all, unrelated to this remix, I would like to thank the judges for giving me very useful feedback on "Frozen Swamp". I will start working to improve the track soon and resubmit it. "Frozen Swamp", I felt, was too hastily put together. I still really like the idea and atmosphere (I won't change much on overall composition), but productivewise, it wasn't good. For "Entranced Amidst Thorns", I took way more time finding good sounds, tweaking them, and mixing the song. Volumes for a lot of instruments and drum sounds were individually changed for each section of the song. I also learned a lot more about my arrangement program and thus played around with some effects. Lately, I've been into trance music a lot. Mostly the old stuff, but when I started goofing around in my arrangement program, I found it more fun to make more eurotrance-ish stuff myself. Hence, "Entranced Amidst Thorns" is a more modern trance song to the core. When put alongside your average trance songs (those unrelated to game soundtrack, that is), it's nothing very original. But this is a remix. I took to heart the advice to be more daring with the source material in my compositions, and so I simply used the four main melodies in the source. They're there, but the rest of the song is completely unrelated. I added my own loops and some melodies and, of course, a different scale which I thought suited trance more. The title of this track is taken from the fact that Bryyo is a planet full of rich wildlife. One part of Bryyo is called "thorn" jungle. Though the song played in that area is different than the song I used as source material, I still found this to be a suitable part of the song's name. As for the "entranced" bit, well... that's obvious. Source melodies: 01:05 to 01:31 - 1st source melody (after intro section; trance lead + choir pad in the background) 01:43 to 02:09 - 2nd source melody (breakdown section; trance lead with effects) 02:12 to 02:38 - 2nd souce melody (main section 1; trance lead) 02:38 to 03:03 - 2nd + 3rd source melody (main section 1; trance lead (2nd melody), piano (3rd melody)) 03:16 to 03:29 - 4th source melody (interlude section; strings in the background) 03:29 to 03:55 - 1st + 3rd source melody (main section 2; piano (3rd melody), choir in the background (1st melody)) 03:55 to 04:20 - 1st + 3rd source melody (main section 2; piano + trance lead (3rd melody), choir in the background (1st melody)) -------------------------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBl6BtDVt6I
  15. Guys, After a long break, here is another Streets of Rage remix. Once again, it's housey and dancey. Once again it's fun, or at least I think so. Whereas for all my previous mixes I always wrote a small essay in my submission emails, mainly because there was a bit of a back story to each one, this one doesn't really require one. It is just a remix that wrote itself and I had a ton of fun making. Enjoy! The original version was minor key -- believe it! The leads were played with a recorder instead of guitar. Rozovian cried about how it didn't have enough link to the source, so I eventually remade the song in a major key which is what you're listening to now. Then Rozovian cried again like the baby she is, and said that this major key version didn't have enough link to the source. Well as you can see from the source breakdown, it does. Well over 50% I would say. The inspiration for this song was old prog rock, complete with B4 organ, funky bass, and nice guitar solos. Rozovian raised quite a stink over my 70s synth lead because it didn't sound "real". For the record, the QLSO, Superior 2 drums, Halion xylophone, and the B4 organ are also fake. Goofy Rozovian! *shakes fist* I fought long and hard to keep that 70s synth lead, and I think Rozovian realized in the end that the inclusion of the awesome 70s lead is out of his control. I am very happy with the 70s synth lead, and I hope you like it too. Rhapsody of Fire totally used the same synth in the keyboard solo for Sea of Fate from their new CD. Well, new at the time of writing this, but probably 2 or 3 albums ago by the time this gets paneled. Cheers! Note: The tongue in cheek jabs at Rozovian and other stuff is all in fun. Please don't take it seriously. -----------------------------
  17. Typical Hal- wait, what? I am totally happy to see you expanding your styles. This mix is pretty solid, with good (although a bit conservative) writing all around, and plenty of nice textures. Nice work. YES
  18. Pretty much everything is going for this except the lead tone and the lack of bass presence. I think this is a pretty easy fix for you guys. NO (resubmit, doods!)
  19. Typical Halc mi- Nah, I love Halc's style, and this mix in particular uses the crunchiness to the extreme (in a good way). I love that he focuses more on the other aspects of the theme as well as the main melody. GO Halc!
  20. Got a PM from BlackPanther "Hey Deia, I made a mistake when subbing my Legend of Dragoon remix, I put the song title in the name title field for the remix. The real name for the remix is "Deadbeat", if you could change it I would appreciate it. I sent this out to the other judges in case you didn't get this though xD."
  21. I feel the need to quote the Don scene from FF7 right now...
  22. Vig pretty much hit this on the nose. I love how creepy the overall song is, but it's just too repetitive. I also agree with the piano being so mechanical sounds a little weird. NO
