OCR02139 - Final Fantasy IV "Crazy Old Betty"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I wish this one had been longer, but I certainly love what's been done to it as is. The imagery this produces is just fantastic, nice work with that. Can't wait to hear more from you! -
Seems pretty successful to me.

*NO* Shadowrun 'It's Dark at 3AM'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I had to think on this one for a while. I can't say I'm too familiar with this genre of music, so it took a while to get used to some of the sounds. What I'm noticing is that it starts out pretty cool in terms of instruments and the overall soundscape, but once it hits 1:40, things start to get messy and cluttered. There are some neat arrangement ideas, but then there will be times where the drums aren't matching, or the the reverb/delay causes a lot of mud. Overall it needs to be cleaned up a bit. The drums at 2:18 aren't really working together at all. Also, the ending feels pretty weak: it just stops, and then there is about 5 seconds of silence. I think you've got a pretty neat idea, and nothing I was at all expecting from your submission letter, but it needs to be cleaned up before it's ready. I'd like to see this again after it's fixed! NO (resubmit) -
I'm glad to see everyone working so hard on this. It is really great to see the first page of reviews filled with all "Last Posted Today" and "Last Posted Yesterday". I am hoping that I can get 50 reviews this month myself, but if not, I'll blame it on being busy with judging. As for Moguta's response, let's just say I'm not as creative as OA, and don't worry, the socks will be coming back off.

OCR02111 - NBA Jam "From Downtown"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The Bad Dudes really know how to treat these instruments right. Everyone is working together fantastically, and overall this is hard not to tap your foot to. The off-beat feel really makes this catchy, and all the solo breaks are fluid. Great stuff. -
OCR02403 - *YES* Mega Man X2 'Intruder Alert'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I have some bias, as MMX2 was my favorite of the series for a long time, and I thought overall it had a pretty solid soundtrack. I think the adaption here is pretty sweet overall, although I would have liked there to have been a little bit more adaption of the source melody at times. I think the balance between original and source is nicely done. The bass drum needs a little more oomph; doesn't feel like it's cutting through nearly enough in the soundscape. There were also a few times where the timing felt ever so slightly off, almost a tad lazy, if that makes sense. I think it's related to the instrument attacks more than anything. Aside from those issues, the production seems pretty good to me. Love it: YES EDIT: I read Andrew's vote, and I will have to agree with him on the strings, drums, and guitars. I still don't think it's quite enough for me to call it a no, but it would be pretty awesome if those things could get fixed up. -
OCR02154 - *YES* Cave Story 'The Angels of Hell'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
It's pretty obvious there was a lot of work put into this. I liked a lot of the different ways you treated the instruments, and this is a pretty cool adaption of the source material. I found the transition from Scorching Back to the Title Theme to be a little weak (felt a little too 'medley'), but the other transitions were pretty solid. The 'evil rising strings' was pretty awesome, and featuring the cello (my ever so favorite string instrument) was a good choice for the more anxious feel. Arrangement overall is very nice! There were times where the playing overall feels a little mechanical, although it's not a deal breaker in anyway. Aside from that, balance is very nice, and there's a good use of dynamics overall. Pretty easy decision on this, loved listening, YES -

OCR02129 - Teen Agent "A Village's Welcome"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I agree with DJP about how it's nice to hear something happy and cheerful from VHD. As usual he's pulled out his awesome orchestration skills, and it's easy to hear lots of great things from this. There are plenty of nuances that really make this work well, again very typical (and enjoyed!) from VHD. Likin' this. -
OCR02126 - King Kong 2 (MSX) "End of the Adventure"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Loved listening to this: The pirate feel is unmistakable, and it really adds some nice charm. Imagine: King Kong....on a pirate ship. Pure awesome. Anyways, the orchestration is done really well, and I thing the arrangement is pretty awesome. Nice work. -
Part of the Kirby Super Star album. Keep it on hold. ReMixer: Hylian Lemon ReMix title: Spelunking in Space Game: Kirby Super Star Song: Cocoa Cave (aka Cavios) This was one of the most enjoyable project tracks I've done. Cocoa Cave is an incredible source; it can stand on its own, but it's also pretty open to arrangement. And it's just good. Especially the bassline. Gotta love that bassline. ---------------------------------------------

halc (13226) Drew Wheeler 'Sinking Deeper' Final Fantasy V Source: Beyond the Deep Blue Sea Comments: I haven't done any FF since my Besaid mix, so I figure it's about time I give the series a little more love. I've been poking around, picking out some of the more chill themes- the recent FF5 album gave me a little burst of inspiration so I decided to start there. Hope you like it! ------------------------------------

OCRemix Song Submission: Note: You can leave the song links and whatnot in if this gets rejected. Song name: Winter NiGHTS (Hey Dreamer) Contact Information: Your ReMixer name – Level 99 Your real name - Stevo Bortz Your email address – level99remixteam@gmail.com Your website – you know my website! Your userid – 13318 Submission Information Name of game(s) arranged – Christmas NiGHTS into Dreams... Name of individual song(s) arranged – Winter Sleep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucPNlDs-5EU) Composer: Naofumi Hataya, Tomoko Sasaki (Game already in OCR database) Comments on the song: Tempted to send in another essay of a submission letter. Tried not to, despite the fact that no trees would be harmed by my overtyping. It's no secret that I have a large amount of love for a certain purple jester. On top of that, the Saturn remix section looks awful bare...This is a remix of Winter Sleep called Winter NiGHTS (Hey Dreamer). Winter Sleep, as a source tune, is only 28 seconds long. It's a soothing, chimey, flute-filled relaxing song. Perfect to put on loop before you go to bed because can melt in the song's atmosphere. There's four main components to the source that I have used in my arrangement of the tune: the flute (which plays a variation of the NiGHTS motif with an added melody during 9-16 measures), the voice, the backing pads, and the bass. The source also has some percussive elements and random chimey sounds, however they were not directly used in the new arrangement. This version is a remastering of the song I did for the Winter Dreamers EP last year, which was a small holiday project I worked on with the admins of NiGHTSintodreams.com. You can grab the whole EP from their website: http://www.nightsintodreams.com/?p=783. As for the song itself, it is very reminiscent of the emergence of synth rock 60's/70's pop rocky style. I would definitely say the electronica experimentation of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer was a big influence in some of the sounds I chose. There's vocals (oh no, watch out, vocal-haters!), and the lyrics are as follows: On a cold winter night You warmed my heart as we held tight The dreams will come in time Just as the seasons change, our fears will be left behind Hey, Dreamer Hold on just a little more The Sun's not far from the horizon And this is the day that we have long been waiting for. (x2) Hey, Dreamer It'd be very hard for me to give a source breakdown because it's spread all of the place. The bass has been adapted to the new tempo and drum rhythm, the vocal melody from the original has been adapted to a number of instruments and the new vocals themselves, some of the flute part from the original plays during the choruses with some time modifications, and the backing pad chords have been adapted to the clean and distorted guitars. There are some transitional measures of the song which, while note directly source-related, serve to tie different sections together. There's also a synth solo section which noodles around the voice melody a good bit. Hope you enjoy it, and you can get the whole EP (not all game music) here: http://www.nightsintodreams.com/?p=783 ~Stevo

"Super Retro Space Hero" source: prisoner #21613 Started this on Thursday night, and the next day djp says the following in the write-up for ABG's Schala mix: "I'd love to see all of you branch out, start covering some undiscovered country, and shine a spotlight on corners of VGM that are less tread, or completely unexplored." That's when I felt I had to finish this one asap. 100% of source used in 100% of the mix. All synths here are EFM1, Logic's built-in fm synth. All notes have the same velocity. Yes, those silly rules I make up for myself make remixing more fun. Pass or no pass, this was one of the more fun tracks I've done in a while. Enjoy. -ad --------------------------

....yeah. Your ReMixer name: Brandon Strader Your real name: Brandon E. Strader Your email address: oinkness@gmail.com Your website: http://www.bstrader.net/ Your userid 3123 Name of game(s) arranged: Donkey Kong Country 3 Name of individual song(s) arranged: Brothers Bear (SNES) Dave Wise http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JibGNrKohU Made this in a couple days for DKC3 project.. It was very fun to make due to how generic bluesy rock the source is.. I kinda stayed in that same general area with it.. I was inspired by Uprising by Muse for the drums and bassline.. but for the most part I think it is extremely true to the original... there's a couple solo breaks but they're in the style of the song and give a short break before heading back into the rock... give it a few listens and let it grow on you, this stuff is contagious.... anyway I'll make it easy on you this time with a source map instead of text. This shows exactly in the session where all the source usage is... http://www.bstrader.net/remixes/unbearablesource.png as you can see it's well over 70%... So it is a little bit on the conservative side, but I think the little change in the bassline and drums might even that out a bit. I've been getting in a lot of trouble with the panel for having too many elements in the songs... I tried to keep it simple this time... there's not a lot of pieces fighting for your attention and everything can be heard clearly and fully. A couple great blues solos that I really enjoyed playing. Anyway, I suck at write-ups so here's my copy pasta from dkc3 secret forum; "I made this song in a couple days from the source "Brothers Bear". I liked the bluesy rock sound of the original, so I stayed very true to that with the remix. The remix is very conservative, meaning that it does have a huge rendition of the source in there, but there are also a couple nice little breakdowns as well. "Unbearable" is dedicated to the highly annoying Emunator, which I severely hate and wish nothing but torment and pain for. The song proudly displays a love for live instrumentation and blues solos!" ------------------------ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADh5K-5j56s

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is that time of the year again where most of us complain of the cold weather and horrible driving conditions, and the rest of us think about the end of the semester. What better way to celebrate such wonderous things but by participating in our yearly promotion of giving to others. That's right, December is Reviews Month! What better way to show your appreciation for all the artists who put their time and effort into creating the masterpieces that we can listen to (all for free by the way) then by letting them know what you think of their work? We have an auspicious goal of having at least 400 reviews for tracks by the end of the month, and the more the merrier! Last year we had a huge goal where every track had at least 10 reviews on it. It seems as though we've fallen a bit behind, so hopefully we can catch up, and even exceed that number! Here's a helpful link to all the mixes by lowest amount of reviews. Someday, if we work hard enough, we can join our super-awesome-judge OA in reviewing every single remix on this site! Of course we have a bit of incentive for you all. This year, the more you REview, the more we are going to REveal! Don't quite understand? Just help us get 50 total reviews for this month and you will see just the first step! Whatever you may celebrate, Happy Holidays to you! If you don't celebrate, then Happy Solstice!

Appreciation of VG Music 3: Vocals
DragonAvenger replied to Capa Langley's topic in General Discussion
Morning Sky or from Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles has always been a favorite of mine. It's simple, but effective. Again, simple, but effective. The ending of Legend of Mana. The vocals in the beginning give me shivers. This one doesn't exactly count, but from the Final Fantasy: Pray CD is pretty much my favorite version ever.
