  1. I'm a long time video game music fan who has no problem with orchestrated music. I listen to film and game soundtracks all the time that are badass and exciting. Recently, I've been required to attend a loved one's classical choral concerts. I've been told that I look like I'm being tortured. I guess that's because for me, a classical choral music concert is the visual equivalent of silently watching paint dry for two hours. I don't even find the lyrics sheets interesting as most choral music amounts to "Praise Jesus Praise Mary," and I'm an agnostic.

So, I can't get out of these concerts. Can anyone here begin to explain to me how to properly listen to classical music? I come at things from a video game listener's perspective so I always expect classical music to have a clear melody and be more bombastic. To me, a lot of classical music in general sounds like pastoral music with butterflies and bees flying happily through the fields. I always feel like I'm missing out on whatever ACTUAL emotion they are trying to express because modern soundtrack music is so blatant about what you're supposed to be feelings whereas classical music, I don't even know.

You've essentially hit the nail on the head in regards to the criticisms I have with choir music in general, especially with the Christian season upon us. The best way you can listen to this type of music is by strapping an mp3 player to your undershirt, and devising an intricate map that your headphones can follow to your ears undetected because CHORAL MUSIC IS DOG POOP! I know exactly what pieces you're listening to, and it's why I got out of all the choirs I've ever been in. "Jesus!" (common time, E quarter note to C dotted half note)

But everyone else in the thread is right; there are plenty of different types of orchestral music ranging from orchestra size, textures, time periods, etc. I'm probably most aligned with Kanthos in that I much prefer music from the Romantic period onward, but I can also appreciate Vivaldi and Bach from further back. You just need to find your niche. And if you look tortured, well there ain't much you can do to avoid a tortured look. Your loved ones are just going to have to take an "at least he's making a sacrifice for us" attitude about it.

  2. I'll never go for a digital copy as long as I'm paying retail prices, especially if I don't have control over the product I bought. I don't care what jargon a EULA may have, I didn't pay 40 or more bucks just to borrow something, and that's essentially what digital distribution is to me. I'll go nuts on Steam since I can get games on stellar prices.

With my 3DS, I'll always go physical, but I'd love the ability to install my games onto an SD card so I didn't have to drag my carts with me everywhere I go.

  3. ...since the Zelda series has been pretty disagreeable with most consumers as of late.

I want you to know that I was actually considering taking your post as something other than your usual "I hate everything" spiel until I got to this part.

  4. You may or may not care for their opinions but Lusipurr.com seems to think the Wii U sucks. They hate a lot of things though. I haven't read them because I was not planning to get a Wii U but if you are interested, there are two stories about it right on their front page.

Dude, Lusipurr is all about being a curmudgeon for the sake of the lols. I wouldn't take anything he or they say as indicative of anything...

  5. Don't be surprised to see prices on games go up and less risks being taken in game development, though. If the specs of both the 720 and the PS4 are through the roof compared to the Wii U, game dev costs are going to go up in direct proportion, and speaking personally, I don't really think most people care if audio/video fidelity don't dramatically increase from this generation. That doesn't mean people won't pick up MS and Sony's next console, but I believe that they're both going to focus much more on features than specs, and that isn't a huge stretch, given the continued push that all 3 are making with stuff like media streaming and other living room experiences.

  6. Yeah, it's funny how instrumental music is really great for getting work done, while vocal music just screws everything up. Aren't vocals just another instrument after all? Yes and no I guess.

Anyway, I actually listen to The One Ups while writing a paper or something.

  7. Spending more time with the Virtual Console lately, and I've picked up Castlevania: The Adventure, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, Mario's Picross(available as Club Nintendo reward 'til Nov.18 ), Mario Golf GBC, and on the DSiWare side of things Dr. Mario Express.

Castlevania: The Adventure is the first Castlevania game on the Gameboy, and does a well-enough if a little basic job of proving that the series could have legs on the system. You don't really get much in the way of traditional sub-weapons, in fact all you get are two whip upgrads: a long chain and a fireball similar to Castlevania: Bloodlines I believe, and the game has only 5 levels(I think?), but it's still playable and fun, and it has a killer soundtrack that I want to hear arranged. It's $2.99 USD on the VC right now, and supporting it will probably get Konami to bring out Castlevania 2: Belmont's Revenge, which is much more reminiscent of the NES games.

Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is unadulterated human doo doo. Do not grab. I'm not even going to give a description. Well, they can't ALL be winners.

Mario's Picross or as I call it "'Where did all my free time go?': The Game". This as far as I can tell is one of Jupiter's(I think the same studio that brought us The World Ends With You) first outings in portables, and it's quite the fun puzzle game. You'll spend your time chiseling out images(because for some reason Mario is exploring Egyptian ruins this time) using sets of numbers on the top and left of the screen to give you hints on where to strike. Not really much else to say other than it's a fun little time waster. Currently you can grab it as a Club Nintendo reward for 100 coins 'til Nov. 18. Best Reward we've had in awhile in my opinion.

Mario Golf is a game that I can't fully describe yet as I haven't delved into it that much other than practice and tourney modes, but did you guys know that this is a fully-fledged RPG based around playing golf, complete with rudimentary character creation, XP, and stat allocation? Neither did I at first glance, but go Camelot for this nice achievement. The golfing gameplay is pretty simple as it uses the base idea of Wii Sports Golf in that you have to line up the shot, balance your power, keep an eye on what clubs you're using and paying attention to the wind, and man is it fun. There are several modes to play in from practice, tourney, RPG, and against a master golfer. The game is somewhere between 5-6 bucks on the VS. Grab it.

Dr. Mario Express on DSiWare is just that: more Dr. Mario. If you're as into that style of puzzler as I am, then you'll enjoy it.

    Happy Gaming, all.

P.S. where the FUCK is Ninja Gaiden on the Virtual Console!?

  8. In terms of gameplay, Doulifee is right: Forget everything you know about 1.0. It's all out the window.

Everything they've been adding in the latest patches(including the job system) was worked in around the limits of the original engine, and will be redone and revamped.

Net code is being completely redone, and the alpha vids we've seen so far have more than 40 people running around on screen with next to no visible network lag. The godsdammed input lag is completely erased from existence, the areas are being completely redone to be much more unique, basic MMO functionality is being added, like auction houses, and a pretty elaborate housing system for one.

They're also adding a new class and job; Arcanist and Summoner, where the former will be in the game at release with the latter being added in a patch shortly afterwards.

The two largest pieces of end game content being touted at release is the Crystal Tower and the Labyrinth of Bahamut, with who knows what else following that. Of course dungeons, quests, even leveling up and the battle system are being revamped, so I'm starting fresh anyway. They're adding male miqo'tes and female Roegadyns as well, and a bunch of other things here and there.

The best thing to do is just check the lodestone. As of last night, the game has been shutdown until beta, and then 2.0 official launch, which could be anywhere from March to July of next year.

  9. Here's the gist of the story thus far:

In FFXIV 1.0, you're essentially playing a "prologue" of sorts in that all the major players in the story are being set up: Memphina and the Order of The Twelve, gifted with powers supposedly born from the Twelve Gods of Eorzea, the three Grand Companies; The Maelstrom headed by the Admiral of Limsa Lominsa; The Twin Adders led by Gridania's elder seeress, Kan-Ee-Sena; The Immortal Flames, helmed by Rahbaun Aldin, one of the 6 members of Ul'dah's governing Syndicate, Cid Garlond, high engineer of Garlond Ironworks and traitor to the Garlean Empire. You also have two Legatus of the XIV Legions of The Garlemaid Empire: Nael Van Darnus The White Raven, and Gaius Von Balsar The Black Wolf.

This is in addition to the somewhat hostile-yet-not-really-but-really beast tribes: The secluded mountain engineers/mountain bandits, the Kobolds; The flying scourge of The Black Shroud, the Ixali, and the desert dwellers, the Amal'ja. There are also other tribes such as the Sahagin, the Sylphs, Goblins, Ququrin, etc, but these play minimal roles save for the Sahagin as magical McGuffins for now. Each of these tribes worship a different primal, whom the Garlean Empire fears as "Eikons which include Ifrit, Garuda, Titan, Leviathan, etc.

Final Fantasy XIV 1.0 deals with the open hostilities between beast tribes, the lore behind the Garlean Empire, and the coming destruction brought on by Nael Van Darnus' plot to bring down Dalamud, an ancient relic space station(or so we all thought) of the Allaghan civilization, and the coming "end times" in the form of the 7th Umbral Era. In the latest patches, we were introduced to Louisoix, leader of the "Archons" and the Circle of Knowing from the now destroyed city of Sharlayan, to assist in preparing Eorzea for its predestined fate.

Unfortunately as you can tell by that trailer, all was for naught: The prayers offered to the gods were ineffective, and as it stands, Dalamud was no ordinary space station, but rather a giant prison to keep a very specific ancient threat at bay: the great elder primal Bahamut, who promptly seared all of Eorzea with a Mega Flare amplified by the power of Dalamud's crashing into the land. All this while the Grand Companies were staging a final assault on the encroaching Garlean Empire in Mor Dhona, with the archons looking and praying on. Unfortunately it wasn't enough, and with his last ounce of strength, Louisoix sent as many adventurers(us) as he could presumably beyond "The Void, which is a place between dimensions hinted at through the lore, where we'll remain until the land is safe again. Content with doing all he could, he smiled as he welcomed his own death and died a martyr to his cause.

  10. Well I'm glad I'M not the one who scoured through the forums to revive this topic.

Yep, Final Fantasy XIV 1.0's end has finally come, and the Alpha test for A Realm Reborn is going smoothly from what the devs are saying. Beta should probably begin around end of November to mid-December.

Let's all pour one out for poor old Louisoix.

  11. Oh I'm not knocking P90-X at all. When I tried it out along with my roommate way back when, I definitely saw that it could get a person results. I just don't have enough space anywhere in my house where I could do it.

So in terms of nutrition, guys, where should the "cut off" so to speak be for sodium intake? I mentioned that I was eating soups before, mostly canned stuff, and about a week and a half ago I glanced at the nutrition content at a new one I thought of trying, and I saw that the sodium was to my untrained eye seemingly absurd at about 30% of the daily amount for a 2,000 cal diet. I frantically looked at the info for the ones I normally eat(where there are two servings per can and I down one can each meal since low calories anyway), and I was eating about 65% of the daily amount in one meal! I immediately put a hiatus on that stuff. So what's the issue with sodium? How much should I get in my diet if any?

Also on the topic of sugars, I don't normally consume sugar outside of what I put in my coffee, which is about two small teaspoons of brown sugar. Should I just cut that out entirely? What about sweeteners like Sweet n low? I've read conflicting stuff about them in terms of effects on health. Could anyone give me some guidance here?

Thanks in advance, people, and for all the previous advice as well!

Also back to eating salmon! God I love this stuff.

  12. Thanks for all the great suggestions, gang. I wish I would've posted in this thread months ago. :-P

I'm glad to see that I'm at least doing a few things right with my diet. I guess I'll add another few hundred cals to my diet, and I'll probably grab an iron gym so I can make sure my form for all my exercises is correct and to start pull ups. And yeah, working out and releasing that seratonin is just fun in general. I'll start incorporating peanuts and more eggs in my diet as well(always great to have an excuse to eat more!)

I don't really have an effective space for P90X and I didn't really feel it last few times I've tried it. An iron gym seems like the best thing for my own limited space.

  13. Alright I guess I'll bite at this thread. I need some workout advice.

So my workout routine right now isn't huge; usually 6 days a week and a rest day. Right now I'm just doing standard pushups, situps, and legups(or whatever the hell you call laying down flat, bringing your legs from extended to your chest kind of like a situp). I do at least 200 reps daily of each, usually divided into a morning and evening session. I'm probably going to start running on the tread again to build up to 2 miles again, and start biking when I buy my bike

Right now I'm 5'8 borderline 5'9 and my weight fluctuates between 139 - 144 lbs. usually. I'm eating 5 to 6 times a day roughly 200 - 300 hundred calories in proteins and carbs like turkey sandwiches, soups, yogurt, and cereals and greens and fruits whenever I can get 'em.

I'm not overweight by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't have a strong muscle layer or core just yet, although they're starting to take shape. I don't necessarily want to bulk up, but I do want to be at least a little cut and lean.

In terms of weight training, I have serious balance issues, so I can't do unassisted bench presses unless I'm using the machine, but I can do free weights.

Any advice from you guys? I'm thinking of buying a pull up bar and using that as well. Are they really effective? How do you balance your workouts? How long do you work out for at a time?

  14. Hey gang sorry for the lax in responding, but I think after a few days of testing some things out, updating some stuff, and above all cleaning out my case as best I can and rearranging some components, with a side order of some "no duh" moments, I think I've been able to fix the problem.

After initially updating my video drivers, I thought the problem had been taken care of. This was proven false as not only did the vid crashing happen once more during an extended Deus Ex 3 play, but I also got a blue screen during DE3 AND a play through a Left 4 Dead 2 online campaign.

Running a debug session after the DE3 error, I deduced it was a USB conflict(am using a Netgear wireless N USB receiver), which led me to believe my mainboard(an ASUS M4A88T-M for reference) was acting up. This wouldn't be surprising given my haphazard construction of the PC in the first place. When the L4D2 error occured however, the debug dump reported that it was a problem with the .exe. Pairing this with the previous reminded me of a review I read about my mainboard when paired with certain coolers; Specifically a certain Coolermaster brand CPU fan that uncomfortably sits above a RAM slot on the board.

I then decided to just open up the system, give it a good cleaning and rearrange anything I can. Sure enough, the system innards were pretty dusty so I cleaned up everything from the fans to the GPU, and I moved the RAM around to a less precarious spot(or rather slot).

I then decided to run Speedfan to see how my temps were doing, since overheating was no doubt a potential problem. Things were within manufacture safety ranges, but I wasn't satisfied. It was here that I had my "no duh, stupid!" moment: I opened up eVGA Precision because I had remembered I could control the fan speed that way. I then noticed that the fan was set to auto, but found it strange that it wasn't doing a great job, so I set it to manual and tested out some higher RPMs. Sure enough, I heard the GPU fan more than I ever had, which led me to believe that auto NEVER worked properly. I set it to a lower RPM that wasn't ear-jarring, but that was still much higher than the default set up and bingo! A run through of a few games showed me that temps had decreased by an average of 7 or so Celsius.

It's been 2 days since and I haven't had a single problem on hours-long playthroughs of DE3, L4D2, and Tomb Raider Underworld, so for now I feel like it's case closed. The moral of the story: Stay updated, keep things clean, and keep an eye on fan speeds.

I'll let you guys know if anything comes up at all. Thanks again for the responses.

  15. I'm not saying it's "teh suck", people. You can read through this thread to see several things that have me excited for it in fact, but I think it's a bit premature to say the thing is a "revolution" a la Wii. The asymetric gameplay ideas that can come out of the dual screen solution, as well as being able to stream the game to the tablet thus eliminating the need for a TV in some instances is great, but Nintendo has been kicking around the dual screen idea since the Game n' Watch, which was iterated on with the DS, the 3DS, and now the Wii U.

  16. clearly you never played four swords adventures, or crystal chronicles

Derrit, the only thing you've managed to do is further my point.

Who talked about bad game quality? I never said that in my post. What I did say is that the Wii U does not by any stretch of the imagination create a paradigm shift in the way we play videogames/

  17. ...Did anyone REALLY say that the tablet controller is "revolutionary"? All the Wii U is doing is what the Nintendo DS did back when it released years ago, except one of the screens happens to be your TV this time. Big whoop. I could say "Wow! This will let me keep playing whenever my roommates want the TV!", but I already have a 3DS...

If anything, the Wii U is just playing catch up with the HD generation. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but what we're going to see(again) is most of the sales of the system are going to be based on Nintendo software, and that alone is probably what caused the thing to already sell out nearly everywhere. The difference here is that Nintendo has created an environment in which third party games can now thrive as opposed to the vastly underpowered Wii... Until Microsoft and Sony announce/release their next-gen systems, which is a huge unknown variable to Nintendo's success with the Wii U.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If Skyward Sword were released back when the Wii originally launched, we would all be thinking about motion controls very differently right now. I feel like the same could be said about Nintendo right now with their releasing of the Wii U; we'd be thinking much differently about them as a hardware and software developer.

I think it's a bit more than premature to be completely gloom and doom about the system, but can you blame anyone for being a bit apprehensive about it?
