  1. I think the Wii U is going to run into a big problem in terms of first party IP, and it's already happened I think with New Super Mario Bros. U: Cross-platform fatigue. Right now we're seeing Nintendo sending out all their heavy hitters all at once to the 3DS, your Kid Icarus, Mario, Luigi, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblems, Mario sports games, RPGs, Donkey Kong, etc., and I worry that putting entries in each of those franchises on the Wii U too soon will make consumers skeptical of grabbing them. Of course I could be completely wrong(and I hope I am), but I really think that Nintendo is going to really need to grab 3rd parties pretty heavily.

As we're seeing with the Ninja Gaiden 3 and Rayman Legends scenario however, 3rd parties don't really interested in being exclusive with anyone anymore. This is also exacerbated I feel by the fact that right now the gaming industry and consumers are both about to see what Sony and MS have in store for the next generation of hardware. A lot of things are changing soon, and it'll be a while before we can probably say with certainty how Nintendo(and everyone else for that matter) are going to be fairing.

But really, I loved the motion controls in Skyward Sword, and I really hope Nintendo doesn't abandon motion controls, since a real 1-to-1 control scheme on an HD system with Nintendo branding behind it should be amazing.

  2. Honestly though, the game is pretty easy to break; even on hard/classic. I've essentially turned Donny into my second strongest unit next to Chrom. As I advancing everyone's classes, I'm finding that if I use a simple turtle strategy; using the first turn to position my tanks in enemy danger zones(cue Kenny Loggins), swarming them, then weeding out the rest as they approach, makes the game that much easier.

The pairing systems add a good layer to that strategy, as I'll usually back up a tank with a mage or an archer, and have those characters move first on each time. I'm trying to find quicker methods though, as this one usually takes more turns. Keeps me alive though.

I'm a big fan of Donny just because of his back story and reasons for joining The Shepards.

  3. All that being said however, I still love the hell out of the game, and am constantly trying out ways to improve my strategies each stage playthrough. This is a good thing, since the precarious position of the Data Wipe option right next to the Languages option has caused me to lose my data twice already... Seems like every in-game move I make isn't the only thing I need to scrutinize heavily...

At any rate, I want to avoid too many spoilers by asking, but who are your favorite characters so far gang? My favorite just due to personal background is probably Donnel, and he's quickly becoming the strongest member of my team and setting up to get hitched with a certain royal maiden.

  4. Good lord the 3DS is still on Fire! I JUST got Fire Emblem last week, and I totally forgot that Castlevania and Luigi's Mansion were fresh on the horizon! Now Legend of The River King and Harvest Moon, AND Mario & Luigi and Mario Golf!? That's not even mentioning everything ELSE 3rd parties are putting out like Etrian Odyssey IV, Castlevania, Project X Zone and Shin Megami Tensei IV. Lordy lordy.

If they finally announce a localization for Bravely Default and release info on Smash Bros., I think it's safe to call in the 3DS as winner in this portable gen again.

  5. There is only one thing that bugs me about the entire game thus far, and the fact that it's so trivial is a testament to how gosh darn GOOD this game is: Whenever I have to reset the game, or even when I just power it on again, the in-game voices revert to English. Now, I actually think the dub is pretty good, but I'm just too much of a language purist to use it constantly. Honestly though, this isn't even a big issue, I just have to constantly go back into the settings to change back and forth between languages.

  6. Another excellent demo and another $40 waiting to be spent. This is the power of demos, Nintendo and third-party devs. I never thought that I'd like a roguelike, especially an entry in a series that is supposedly pretty hard, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I fell in love with the Etrian Odyssey IV demo.

EOIV and Fire Emblem Awakening(and Pokemon Black 2) are really satisfying that hardcore RPG itch in the back of my head, and having them on a portable is really great. Here's to hoping we get Bravely Default at SOME point Although I just freaking got FE a few days ago and I'm hooked on the EOIV demo.

I don't really know where Nintendo will be going with the Wii U, but as long as they stay the course with the 3DS, I'm totally onboard.

I have a question to Atlus fans: I feel like I would probably like Shin Megami Tensei, and am interested in SMTIV(assuming it gets localized), but can someone give me a "highlgiht reel" of sorts as to why the series is big and why I should like it?

  7. I don't know why didn't extend Legacy to longtime FFXI players. That was a disappointment.

Because FFXI was never bombing anywhere near as hard as FFXIV was if at all.

Of course I really wish that they'd bring back that discount for subbing to both games so I could go through Audolin at some point. Of course getting people to go along with me is pretty much not happening.

  8. I want a photo-realistic Zelda. Something like Skyrim's graphical style. They tried with Twilight Princess, but Nintendo Wii. (:P)

    That would be gorgeous.

I don't see how that'd be great at all. Why wouldn't you just play Skyrim instead then? You already have that game. Even Twilight Princess had a very stylized look about it, and so has almost every Zelda game out there. It's kind of one of Zelda's things.

I would say that I'm glad they're trying to shake up the conventions of what a Zelda game should be. They sort of started doing that with Skyward Sword, so I know they're capable of it. If I don't have a Wii U before then, I'll probably get one right when it happens.

I'd imagine that the controls are going to be a combination of Wiimotion+ along with a multiplayer component probably using the Wii U Gamepad.

  9. Yeah, don't people remember that the original name for Xenoblade was Monado? They only changed it since Takahashi was the director and it just rolls off the tongue easier, but it has no connection whatsoever to the Xeno series.

Even more frustrating is that people in the games media have made this mistake and base their judgements on that false premise.

  10. Well you'll get no argument from me about their handheld strategy. I can't get enough of my 3DS, after all. I can pretty much only speak for myself on this one, but I absolutely hate(hate hate HATE, even) having to own more than one console if I want to get a full spectrum of the games I want to play. It's just way too much clutter, wires, controllers, cases/carts, etc.

It'd be great if Nintendo could go back to pretty much being the defacto brand to own in a person's house a la Super NES(yes yes, the Genesis was a thing too, but let's not kid ourselves).

  11. I am pretty excited by everything they've announced for the Wii U going forward, but I'm still afraid of a Nintendo 64/Gamecube/Wii scenario where Nintendo will bring out some amazing things once every so often, but then there's a general dearth of quality releases on the system for the rest of the year.

Third parties gotta get all up ins that shit.

  12. Yeah, a friend of mine introduced me to the concept of IVs and Effort values and I was pretty much "fuck that" right away.

I guess my problem is that the PWT(more like PWNT in my case) is pretty much telling me I fail as a trainer. :-P

What I thought might have been a good idea was to incorporate just Pokemon with multiple types to add to my variety, but then I realized that just made me more susceptible to that much more stuff, and I'm also learning the wonder of status enfeebles, and buffs for doubles/triples. Problem is that unless I go hardcore into moves, stats, and the like, I can't really predict what moves my 'mons will learn so as to effectively compete, and I don't wanna spend all day on Serebi! I'm not that kind of player that wants to get too immersed in the frame data and detailed specs of things.

  13. I'd beaten the E4 in White 2 a while back and have kind of just been screwing around with other games since then. I'm starting to get kind of bored and I figure I might as well start getting into the whole online thing before X and Y get here, so here's my friend code for White 2.

    3053 5393 2815.

I guess I'll add everyone who has their code posted here while I'm at it. Now, off to explore the rest of Unova and train my pokemon.

Dude I hear ya. I kinda wanna just restart the game from scratch since I'm not really doing much with it after taking down the Elite Four. I can't seem to find anyone to play online with other than random battling, and I think I've pretty much goofed up on how I've raised my pokemon so far. I'd probably go for it if I could link up the Dream World with a new game ID, since it resets every time you start up again.

  14. why does every pokemon announcement have to be followed with everyone talking about what designs they do and don't like as if it has ever or will ever matter in any meaningful capacity

Now you know how I feel whenever someone starts a Final Fantasy "discussion".

"No, I don't fucking care that you liked Final Fantasy VII just an iota more than Final Fanatasy V and thought _insert number here_ was the 'death' of the series."

  15. Why do companies keep announcing these consoles!? As if the market wasn't already annoyed/confused enough by the current hardware offerings!

Very impressive tech and I'm sure that more than one or two techies in this forum are going to say they're going to buy it, but really? Our answer to the problem with developing for multiple hardware standards and platform exclusives is to create MORE hardware?

  16. Go go Gadget Market Saturation!

But really, what needs to be said about this device? If nVidia has been paying attention to mobile gaming trends, they'd notice that the kind of people they're aiming at do not want to play "hardcore" games on a small screen, or else the Vita would be flying off shelves, and that the only games that are breaking serious bank(probably the market they're assuming they can break into with this) are dumb .99 cent apps on the iOS and Android markets.

Also echoing Ocre on this about people already having their beefed up rigs that they aren't going to forgo just to use this thing. My own personal speculation is that this is going to be a niche for people who want to do game streaming directly to their TV and that's it, which could be practical as long as they allow for multiplayer support somehow(and I don't see how they couldn't), seeing as how that'd be a big draw to migrate away from your PC screen IMO.

  17. Well, it's been a long while, but there have been a steady slew of alpha test videos and CG trailers released over the past few months, with the latest trailer, A New Beginning, having released today along with the Beta Test Application/Survey page. All previous players who qualified for Legacy status will have access to the Beta starting with Phase 1, while those looking to get into the PS3 Beta test(starting in Phase 3) will have to fill out an application. You can find a .pdf with the current Beta Test roadmap here.

For those who missed the aforementioned videos(including the amazing End of An Era trailer), here they are as follows:
