  1. Hey - where are the links to the judges reviews? I can't seem to find them anymore. I would be interested to see what the judges thought. Anyways, I often find heavy stuff like this a bit disturbing (this being no exception at some points), but I thought this was pretty cool. One thing that stuck out to me the most...4:59...love the transition into the dungeon theme! Now THAT's what I'm talking about! I love the dungeon theme so I may be a bit biased . Vocals? They're always risky, but I think they did the style of music great justice. It would have been interesting to hear some special effects to alter the vocals and make things interesting/dynamic (this is not a complaint, just something I think would be cool). A few pain points though, the digital tones don't always seem to mix very well with the instruments IMO - I think they could have been left out all together in some cases, especially on the latter half of the remix. Guitar was great, but the ending felt a bit weak when compared with the rest of the mix. Yeah, if there was crying at the end of this, that would have been waaay too much for met to handle in the disturbance department...good call leaving that out . Well done, though, this was a great remix.
  2. Hmm...I had trouble finding this thread due to the fact that the new tab system doesn't seem to be working on Firefox (works fine on IE7 though). I will admit that, as predicted, I instantly downloaded this mix when I saw the Chrono Trigger image on the site's homepage (yep, I'm a sucker for the popular stuff). Good work for sure - great guitar and great lyrical combination. Quality sounded awesome to me. My primary disappointment was, being a big Chrono Trigger/Mitsuda fan, I couldn't hear the Meledy of Peaceful Days in this piece at all - which I was looking forward to (like a loyal fanboy). Slap a Chrono Trigger label on it and you could instantly sell any original piece . But like I said, this is great work and I think it's good for the community to get a bit more folk out there.
  3. Being a novice musician, it's hard for me to really identify what about the violins caught me off guard. I don't think they necessarily sound fake, but they don't sound natural to me for some reason. Perhaps it's because I'm used to hearing more vibration and volume fade when listening to violins. It might also be because they're all playing the exact same note simultaneously. Had you ever thought about harmonizing them to see what that sounded like? It might also simply be that they get a very loud and prominant role in this mix (1:33 caught me off guard when they seemed to overpower to electric guitar) - just something I wasn't expecting. Yeah, I think you're definitely right here. I'm not used to British style of music. Keeping that in mind and listening to this remix a few more times, I changed my mind about the drums - I think they work great for the genre you were targeting. This is one reason I appreciate sites like ocremix, I get a good dose of different music styles . One thing I forgot to mention is that I love the guitar and piano work you did in this (especially with me being a piano player). I'm not familiar with MUSE or Apololypse Please but I'll have to check it out sometime. And don't get me wrong, I really liked this remix - I mostly just found the violins hard to swallow at parts. Great remix though.
  4. This mix seemed to get a lot of positive reviews, but I'm not sure I dig it so much. I love the Judgement Day theme of FF7 (I sometimes use it to help motivate me to study for my finals), but I feel this rendition was missing something. For one, the violins sound too midi to me - a more natural/realistic sound would have made a huge improvement IMO. I also think the drums could have been a bit louder too and perhaps a bit more improv overall would have gave it a more emotional feeling. But maybe my concern is based on bad expectations. When I think of a quality hard-rock remix, I think of remixes like Zyko & Destiny's Dragon's Prayer: The Blackened Desire (CC) or (one of my favorites) Christian Pacaud's Battle on a New Continent (FF6)...and it's hard to see the positives in something when doing a lot of comparison. To be fair and balanced, though, I loved how the transitions were done - they sounded very cool! Good job overall, I think I was just expecting something a bit more natural sounding. Don't let my opinions keep you from making great remixes though.
  5. Wow, very cool remix! I especially like the rhythm and how this piece never gets boring. I typically don't like these types of remixes with the lower quality sounds, but you rocked my boat with this one! I'm not sure what else to say other than it would be cool to do the robot-dance to this . Money can't buy talent. Great stuff!
  6. Zipp, I totally agree - when I first heard this, I couldn't believe that someone could make something so dark and creepy like the Brinstar track into something upbeat and jazzy - I was shocked in a very pleasant way when I first listened to this remix! I was a little sad to see that the judges didn't seem to like it quite so much. My favorable take might be because I have no remixing skills at all and thus don't know what to look for or appreciate in the technical sense. I actually liked how the piece flowed aimlessly. It's a quality of Jazz that I like - it can chill and go wherever it wants and still be awesome. You get lost in it, but that's what keeps it from ever getting old - even if you play it over and over. Nice work RTF - I love this remix!
  7. I was pretty worried after reading the judges decision on this piece, but after listening to it, I surprisingly enjoyed it. I'm not knowledgeable about all the technical stuff that goes into these remixes, but I thought it was well done overall. On the other hand, I'm more concerned about the quality of the sound and the overall atmosphere that's created when I listen to these mixes. This mix sounded like it came from some highly advanced NES machine - so it's probably not something I'd put on my iPod .
  8. Wow, someone mentioned this earlier, but this would make some pretty sweet boss music. I'm kind of an old-school RPG gamer myself, but this kinda reminded me of what I might expect in a Secret of Mana-genre boss fight. I liked what was done with the intro and outro, bringing back the classic beat. Good, and definitely creative, stuff overall!
  9. I thought this mix was so-so. The multi-language thing worked okay for me, but it would have sounded better if the Japanese sounded more natural. I'm uni-lingual myself, but when I study other languages, I'm extremely picky about my accent (and can hear them well)...so maybe it's just a personal thing. The other thing that concerned me (which is also more personal than technical) is that it didn't seem like remix to me. I guess I've only heard the SPC track, but I suppose I expected a bit more. One mix I compared it to was Harmony's Dragon Song, which I thought was an incredible example of how vocals should be done in a remix. Again, these are just personal tastes and I'm sure there are many who would disagree. But to me, this sounded more like a mainstream performance piece and less like an experimental remix. You can't complain about the quality though! Very crisp sounding and a great production.
  10. Definitely a style I've never heard before. There were parts of it that I thought were off-the-charts awesome and then there were parts that left me pretty confused as to what you were trying to accomplish. I like the idea of mixing the orchestral with the techno, but I think it could have been done a little better in some areas - for example, I think this may have worked a bit better for me if the electronic sounds were not so high pitched...the contrast was a bit too much to handle sometimes. This is definitely a work of art though and has earned my respect and admiration. Keep up the good work!
  11. From a professional standpoint, sure, this mix has some areas where it could be better tuned, but I think overall that it's an incredible piece! It amazes me how far remixes have come when you compare them to what they were several years ago - you wouldn't find much that was close to this kind of quality or detail. I enjoy the flow and mood of this piece - I thought the harps and bells were a very creative idea. Nice work!
  12. Great work on this remix. I can tell that lot of really good decisions were made when piecing this together. I'm especially impressed with how such a simple piece can be transformed the way that it was. Excellent work! Two things bothered me though: 1) The transition at 2:00 seemed a bit forced to me. I think a more gradual transition into the electric would have been better. 2) The sound FX at the very end didn't seem to fit the piece at all. The giggling FX in the beginning made for a pretty neat intro, though. Other than those two items, I love how well this remix flows! Definitely a quality remix worth keeping. It's very relaxing yet not boring - it seemed to cast a romantic aura as well. And as GrayLightning described, the title also fits well. Great production, Tepid. I'm very impressed with this.
  13. I love this remix because it's very creative throughout yet faithful to the original tune (which I admit I really like). I can definitely see myself driving fast at night with the city skyline in view with these beats pulsing in my car stereo. I can tell a lot of detail was put into this mix and I'm continually impressed with what zircon produces. I must say, it's quality stuff like this that keeps me coming back for more! I agree with the others who say it feels a little short, but that's definitely forgiveable.
  14. I think the percussion on this piece is definitely sweet and worth noting. I wasn't too impressed, however, by the melody. I think I just felt like it was a little too repetitive and that there was a very small variety in the notes that were played. I think my gripes are mostly based on taste, though. Nice work overall.
