  2. Link Title: Killer Toe Funk Remixers: ffmusicdj and Geoffrey Taucer Game arranged: Toejam & Earl Songs arranged: Toejam Jammin' Haroon says: I haven't composed a remix in quite some time. I haven't submitted to OCR in ages. I want to fix those two things. The song originated as a test song for a Phaser plugin I developed for guitars and synths. The song just kept growing from 4 bars, to 8, until we had about 20 bars of content and wanted to continue making it into a full song. Me and Jeremy just kept going for a month or more until it was finished. Production was fun and the content we recorded will hopefully be available soon for Reason users. I think Jeremy did a great job with the guitar, and I honestly can't wait to do more work with him in the future. I really miss making music, and I'm glad to be back. Taucer says: OH MY COSMOS IT FEELS SO GOOD TO BE MAKING MUSIC AGAIN! This started out as a short demo for Haroon's distorion and phaser plugins (which everybody should buy right now: http://thatmusiccompany.com/) and evolved from there. I did the guitars, Haroon did everything else on the production side (percussion, badass organ work, and making me sound like a much better guitarist than I actually am), and the overall arrangement was very much a collaborative effort. I pulled a few ideas from live jams I've done of the same source at MAGfest, so while they didn't contribute directly to the mix as recorded here, I want to give shout-outs to Jay "Audio Fidelity" Yaskin, Brad "Prophetik" Burr, Sam "Shnabubula" Weiss, Noah "Escariot" Luddington, and Sid "Sid Meier" Meier. At any rate, this mix was a blast to work on, and I will hopefully be doing many more collabs with Haroon in the future. -Taucer Source:
  3. Hey mate, I'm afraid I can't really offer a proper review on the merits of this album because of how unfamiliar I am with chiptune music, but I like what I hear! Really diverse, adventurous melodies that keep things fresh within the confines of the sound chip. Track 6 was probably my favorite, those crazy arpeggios really did it for me Production-wise, this really caught my attention, it sounds a bit bulkier and bassier than your average chiptune track... Forgive my ignorance, but what was your process for producing this? Did you take the purist approach to producing these or did you take some creative liberties with the tracks? They sound great!
  4. *1 Year Later* As a few of you may know, I've been actively working on this project tirelessly for the last month, putting in a bit of work just about every day, sometimes for hours at a time. What I've got is nowhere near complete, by any means, but it is a SIGNIFICANT step up from where I was at this time last year and, at the very least, listenable enough to share. What's changed: + Added ~3 minutes of arrangement, including... - Expanded intro - Much slower build - Extended piano breakdown/solo section - New source for final "chorus" - Hot Head Bop + New instruments (piano, shakuhachi, sine lead, boy's choir, orchestral percussion) + Cleaned up production quite a bit/preliminary mastering + A bazillion tiny tweaks. What's left to go: + Drums will completely be replaced + Do something cooler in addition/in place of the first synth solo (particularly 1:01) + Expand ambiance/pad writing throughout the track, particularly in the piano breakdown + Flesh out final Hot Head Bop section (right now is just a concept/placeholder) + Figure out what to do from 3:45 - 4:24 + More interesting transitions/sfx work + Live instruments (brainstorming for vocalist and violin/viola players - any interest?) + Additional harmonies/flourishes/transitions throughout the track Please feel free to share any thoughts - keeping in mind that there's still a long way to go before I'm really satisfied with this. Hope you all enjoy, I've been working extremely hard to move this one along https://soundcloud.com/emunator/bramble-blast-wip-2
  5. Fucking awesome guys. I know I raved a lot about this in the judge thread but I really, really, REALLY love everything about this track
  6. I feel that most of the strength of this arrangement lies in how you adapted the source tune into so many melodic contexts and got so much mileage out of essentially 8 notes of material. I like the Deus Ex-esque vibe you chose to go for, and the chaotic melodic crescendo you ended the song with was actually a pretty nice touch in my opinion - it didn't come across directionless to me, as Kris said. I will concede that 1:59-2:15 felt pretty out of place, but no big deal for me. The snare was a bit up-front and loud, it sounded like you were going for a chopped breakbeat sound with that but I don't feel that it totally worked. The last crash at 2:46 was a big letdown, I think if you replaced that with a crash with a longer reverb tail and let it die down more gradually, it would feel much more natural. Overall, I feel that this is competent enough to get by despite the aforementioned issues. It's a close call and I would love to hear some simple improvements, but I'm comfortable giving a nod to this one due to the strength of the arrangement. We'll see how this goes! YES (borderline)
  7. You have some really cool sound design at play here, but ultimately I feel like the track never develops much past that. There's not much in the arrangement/melody to differentiate this from the source, and the arrangement itself ends up being very repetitive. Outside of the sound design and instrument upgrades, I'm not hearing much you in this track. The structure is very much by-the-books without much of a cooldown/outro, as well. I like the sounds you're working with for the most part (the guitar sequencing is a lot more noticeably stiff at the end when it's exposed) but you would need to revisit this with a more interpretive approach to the arrangement in order to pass. NO
  8. I can pretty much 100% cosign with Kristina on this. Solid arrangement and lots of unique sounds floating around, but the production and level of variation throughout the track is not where it needs to be. Right from the onset, most of your samples sound very low-quality - the piano and flute lead are probably the most notable examples, but those sounds just aren't cutting it in terms of realism. It sounds like you did a bit of work to mask the piano with reverb and EQ, but I honestly feel that sample needs to be replaced with something less tinny. I understand that you were going for a chillout vibe and probably wanted to avoid a beat that was too busy, but at the same time I think you didn't do enough to make the drum work engaging and varied throughout the track - you've got a lot of room to experiment with different rhythms and keep things fresh, especially for a 5 minute track. Lots of room for improvement but I do appreciate the attempt, this is something different than I'm used to hearing from you, so kudos for that! Keep at it and continue improving your production/arrangement skills, you've got some solid components in place already but just need to take the sound design and variation to the next level for this to be a pass. NO
  9. This is one of those remixes that really doesn't seem like it should work on paper, but once I actually heard it, everything felt so natural. The saxophone solo was a bold call but it paid off in a huge way, adding an extremely memorable component to an already-solid mix. I was also fond of the latin prayer integration and how it contributed some extra character to the mix and also helped make the transition into the Rebel Army theme a little less jarring. Overall, really ace work from all involved that effortlessly stretched such a short source tune into something so expansive. Topped off with some of the smoothest production work I've heard from Brandon to date... this is a very easy call in my book. YES
  10. Hmmm... I appreciate the effort put into recreating this old-school synthwave vibes. But I can't shake the feeling that most of your lead synths are just not working in this track for the most part, for a variety of reasons. The synth at :28 seems to be playing to its own rhythm and doesn't really mesh well with the rest of the track. At 1:00, I'm hearing so many synth patterns competing with the vocals, everything occupying relatively the same frequency range, so it all becomes very messy and incoherent. I also hear the off-key notes that Deia pointed out... altogether, the synth writing here just doesn't seem to have any synergy with the rest of the track for most of the time, and many of the various melody lines often clash with each other. After listening to the sources, I can see why - Oil Base Act 1 is a mess of a source to work with. The parts that use the main Scrap Brain Zone melody fit a lot more naturally, in my opinion. I wasn't bothered quite as much by the repetitive structure, it's still something that I feel should be addressed but in my opinion, the lead writing was a much bigger factor that did not click into place. NO

  12. And now for something completely different! Like your last sub, this eclectic fusion of disparate elements is just crazy enough to work The saxophone is well played, if a bit rigid, and carries the track nicely while the rest of the instrumentation evolves around it. You're really crafting an unmistakable style with your work. I second Chimp's criticisms about the overall mastering being super quiet, there seems to be a lot of empty space that could benefit from slightly more master compression. Maybe we can look at getting a remastered version before posting if this passes? Additionally, as I mentioned before, there is a level of rigidness to just about everything... the timing is almost too perfect, giving this a bit of an inorganic feel despite being a live performance. I suspect that this was an intentional choice, but it stuck out a little sorely to me nonetheless. Easy call though, keep 'em coming! YES
  13. Wow dude, nice to see you around these parts again! I was a fan of your previously posted mix, and this one is speaking to me even more. I really love how you built the majority of your remix around some very simple piano/bass loops, but everything else around it is constantly evolving. You do a great job keeping things interesting without losing sight of the source tune, which really doesn't give you much to work with from the outset. Excellent sound pallet overall. My gripes with this should be pretty easy fixes, but your mixing needs to get a second look before this is ready to post. The overall track is very loud and way too compressed for the genre, I think laying off your compressor would make this sound a LOT better. Kristina also accurately pointed out that the bass is pushed just a little bit too hard. Maybe fixing the compression issue would resolve it, but once you do that, double-check your bass mix to see if it's still sounding overblown. Nitpick - your 808 snare sticks out as a weak spot... it's drenched in reverb and just doesn't seem mixed very well. The thicker snare that comes in when you switch to more of a breakbeat rhythm is much better, but I think that first snare could stand to be sharper and cut through the mix more. Other than that, you've got a very enthusiastic YES vote coming your way if you can make those mixing tweaks I really love this track and hope you send it back soon if this doesn't pass! EDIT: 3/7/15 - No need to hold this one up any longer! I've revisited this track and realized that my gripes are actually pretty small in the grand scheme, and while I would love to hear some improvements this should be good to go as-is. YES
  14. Yikes... this is a really long, daunting track to judge, but even from the first few minutes of listening I'm noticing some huge dealbreaker issues that would prevent this from passing. The overall mastering is one of the quietest I've ever heard, so that's something that definitely needs to be addressed. In general, the instrumentation is very sparse, and there's never too many ideas going on at once. I can appreciate the more minimalist approach to orchestration, but in this case I don't feel like you have enough ideas present to justify a 12 minute arrangement. A lot of this arrangement is just one or two instruments covering the melodies of the source tune without a ton of interpretation or flow. The section from 8:00 - 8:40 was one of the most interesting parts of the mix - I think if you could trim down your arrangement significantly and focus in on moments like that where you build up your orchestration more fully and take a more interpretive stance on the source material, and I think you might be onto something. As it stands though, most of this just feels too sparse and quiet to hold a listener's attention. NO
  15. Wow, Chimpazilla left a fantastic vote on this and I'm not really even going to try and top that. She said what I had in mind much, MUCH more eloquently. To quickly summarize, I think you have an excellent idea on your hands here... Gruntilda's Lair has such a playfully-creepy vibe and I think your glitch hop treatment managed to mostly capture that vibe while still personalizing it enough to make it your own. I love your use of negative space to imply the Gruntilda melody without explicitly running through every note. That was a great touch that really made this your own. However, your production and detail work is holding this back. The dry string leads and the awkward-sounding gating going on hurts your track overall, that's the biggest component of this remix that doesn't click for me. Additionally, I don't feel like you paid as much attention to detail with your drums as you did to the bass/synth processing (which was pretty cool overall!) Your snare sound was weak, as well - experimenting with layering multiple sounds together will help you get a snappier, more interesting sound... I feel that this could apply to your kick, as well. In general, more variation in the drum patterns would help this along - there's a TON of opportunities for interesting syncopation and fills but that aspect of the mix is falling flat comparatively. This has a lot of great potential and I hope you can overcome your personal hangups and take some of this feedback to heart, so we can hear this one again with some revisions and improvements. NO (resubmit)
  16. I have to be honest, I wasn't feeling this very much. The synth sounds, while mixed and arranged pretty nicely, aren't grabbing my attention at all, and the arrangement is very static so there's not enough time to compensate for the simple sound design with a compelling, dynamic arrangement, either. There's very little in the way of grand, exciting breakdowns or transitions (in fact, I noticed the same filter sweep re-used a couple of times, which was off-putting for such a short track.) The writing and adaptation is probably the most interesting part of this, but as the other judges have pointed out, the source is only present half the time. Not sure what to say, there's not much to latch onto here as a listener. I think Jivemaster did a great job summing up how I felt here with his vote :-\ Sorry dude. I've heard some solid submissions from you in the past but this one isn't clicking for me. NO
  17. The levels really don't sound where they need to be on this track. Your rhythm guitars are eating up pretty much everything else, and while I understand that the rhythms are a primary focus of the mix, they're causing everything to sound squished and indistinct. This is an issue I've noticed on a lot of your recent mixes - for example, your Apex 2015 mix or your Technomagmar track from Gameboy 25th were almost painful to listen to without turning down the volume because of how much you're pushing your compressor on the master track. This track, while I don't think it's quite as bad as those other two, still falls victim to some of the same issues. In general, I like your arrangements and you're obviously quite capable on the guitar, but the way you're mixing everything is just a little bit overdone and it makes it difficult to fully enjoy what you've made. Also, in general I feel like the synth design here is pretty basic and doesn't really excite me. The majority of your synth sounds are dry and lack much expression, and the patches themselves aren't very intricate so that element of the track is rather forgettable. I feel like the guitars steal the show here, so it's good that the most prominent element in the mix is as strong as it is, but I would love to see some more compelling synth sounds from you in the future. Let's see what another pass at mixing can do for this one! NO (resubmit)
  18. Remix Title: "Witchy Glitchy" Remixer Name: Spike Caravan Games Arranged: Banjo-Kazooie Songs Arranged: Gruntilda's Lair, Bridge to Gruntilda's Lair I've been trying, off and on, to get something accepted onto OverClocked Remix for the best part of a decade. Everything I've ever submitted has been smacked down for the admittedly excellent reason that it wasn't very good. So this, dear judges, is my final attempt - it is as good as I know how to make it, and I believe that I can do no better. If you find it to be sub-par, I shall hang up my remixing hat once and for all and move on to pastures and projects anew. So, that being said... here is my remix! It is the Gruntilda's Lair theme from Banjo-Kazooie, reworked in a style that I suppose you would best describe as glitch-hop. I made it using a frankly prehistoric copy of FL Studio 4 and, I think, mostly free samples and soundfonts. The source is as familiar to me as anything can be and I have been consistently humming and whistling Banjo's soundtrack since 1998, so you may find the arrangement to be liberal, although in my own head it never strays unreasonably far from the point. Your mileage may of course vary. Anyway, I've been listening to this for so long that I can't even tell if it's good or what, so... I hope you enjoy it, perchance even green-light it, but either way, I enjoyed making it, and that, at the end of the day, is really the goal, isn't it? - Spike Caravan (PS please don't publish my real full name, thank you ) ----------------------------------- Source:
  19. This one really caught my ear when I was going through the inbox. I was totally on board with giving a YES vote to this track... until I saw the length 2 minutes really isn't long enough to create a fully realized remix in most cases, and especially with this track, it feels like you fizzled out just as you were getting into a solid groove. As Chimp said, this has room for at least another 2-3 minutes of material. Other than the length, I really enjoyed what you have in place - each of the little sonic elements contributes to a wonderful, afternoon vibe that I could listen to on loop while driving or running. It's all very pleasant, but you've gotta give us more content than this! Just to be clear, too... we're not looking for you to just loop your track for another 2 minutes, because that won't fly, either, but at least another minute or two of substantial development to your ideas without using direct repetition would be enough to sway my opinion on this NO (PLEASE resubmit!!)

Thinking it'd be nice to get this out, I decided I could put it out to OCRemix. The remix is inspired by French and Chill House that I had been hearing. I wanted to do something minimalistic and something that'd keep true to the original source, while giving a different musical dimension. Planet Wisp is a beautiful place, and just imagine being there with dew on the leaves, mist surrounding you, sky all purple and you're lost in the serene beauty. Source:
  21. I was considering this for a DP but the overall structure and some of the transitional passages were really unconventional so I wanted to get this vetted by the panel instead. Will listen more and vote later. EDIT: The vote's already been closed out at this point so I'm going to keep this brief, but since I commented initially, I'd like to formally put my vote behind this track as well. This is insanely creative, full of spirit and atmosphere, and does a lot of fun stuff with the source. I can feel personality oozing from everything you do Joe, and this is no exception. YES

  25. hello again, ocr =) this one's a touch old (i finished it in 2012), but it's still a track i'm quite fond of. remixer name: prophetik music real name: Brad Burr website: i shut down prophetikmusic.net, since i wasn't really using it, so i have no website currently. userid: 8761 name of game: witcher 2 name of arrangement: Caemm elaine luned individual song arranged: dwarven stone upon dwarven stone (#4 on the soundtrack, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_jizNCiInw). the track is quite spacey for most of it, and not really a true 'song' until 1:55, so that's where my arrangement started. your own comments: i contacted katethegreat19 in 2011 for some assistance remixing this track, for an unrealized album. she professed to being quite busy (this was before her album came out), so she recommended a Finnish friend that she knew through YouTube, "ShyTooShy" (that's Merrigan's YouTube channel's name). i got in touch with her and she was quite interested in putting this together. we nailed down some initial background tracks, got an idea for the actual melody and how we wanted to do the vocals, and she wrote some original lyrics using the Lore pages on the Witcher's wiki in in-game elvish (that are startlingly applicable to the storyline in the Witcher and the Witcher 2, actually). . real life hit, then, and i spent almost a year struggling to find time to compose. i finally was able to put some time in to finish the backing tracks when my wife finished her masters work. Merrigan recorded her parts, and we were able to get them mastered and into the track. then, in true prophetik fashion, i sat on the track for a year and a half while doing nothing with it even though it was finished. i figure it's time to let this one out into the world. on the technical side, the majority of this was done using FL Studio and Melodyne, with Omnisphere, EDIROL Orchestral, Elastik, and Kontakt 4 making appearances. nothing complex on the mastering side, since i'm not very good at that part anyways =) enjoy!
