  1. Source Old version (version 0): http://compo.thasauce.net/files/Binweasel_-_Trust_Your_Instincts(PRC156).mp3 Latest Version (5) - 7/11/11 So, right now I only have my iPhone earbuds to work with... Hopefully that explains if things got worse between the two versions? XD Sample breakdown: The piano (I think; I found a .sf2 with the same name): http://sonimusicae.free.fr/matshelgesson-maestro-en.html How does it sound? Realistic? Crummy? The organ: I used Electric Organ 1 and 4 on my Roland MT-32, then ran them through a tiny tube amp, a Boss CS-2 and a Boss CE-5. I'll probably end up using this on the final version—unless someone can recommend something better! The synth: 3 MT-32 instruments squeezed together again, this time run through an Ibanez DE7 echo/delay pedal. I reaaaally don't like how it turned out in the mix, though. I want to use the old version's synth, once I figure out how to get the timing better. The guitar: Using Reason's "Intimate Steel String" combinator, but replaced the NNXT instrument with a Taylor 410 refill thingy. I really want live guitar for this, so if anyone's willing to team up! The part at 1:01 is supposed to be kind of free-form picking, the speed varying, fast at first, slowing down for each chord change... but each bar of it is about the same pace, so it's weird. Should I keep that, or write a new part, or give the guitar a break? The bass: Not really sure what I used. The drums: Are a mix of a "Hard Rock Drums" soundfont I found, and Reason's RnB Soul Kit.
  2. Very nice! I'd also adore a more focused mix of just Green Greens and the main Zelda theme (with a bit of Chrono Trigger's Guarda Castle thrown in, perhaps?)
  3. Other M should have focused on Samus's (possible) guilt for blowing up all those innocent families in Super Metroid. When you know what happened to her own parents, seeing Draygon's babies swarm the body and take it away is heartbreaking. She just did exactly what Ridley did to her! And the spinning, flying turtle isn't even one of the species who gets to escape at the end, with all her cute little harmless turtle children! So sad! After the whole baby Metroid thing, seeing her xenocidal tendencies start to affect her would have been fascinating. Instead she angsts over some guy she left on purpose. Samus, you're a monster! I'd kind of like a story where she's torn between settling down and raising a family of her own and passing on the Chozo learnings she has, and putting the suit back on and kicking more alien butt to save the galaxy for the rest of the peoples. It's been done in like a million action movies before, but Samus is a special case, and if done well, could be done very well. Her biological clock is ticking like this!
  4. Another Chrono Trigger one... The Hidden Truth: DJ Shadow -
  5. I know the Zelda one! That was Dale North and Mustin. http://www.dalenorth.com/?tag=vocal Down near the bottom!
  6. This probably doesn't even count at all... Chrono Trigger: Pink Floyd: There's just these three notes... 0:19 in PF's, 0:09 in CT's. And maybe the general mood of both intros. They've been amusing me for years now. Apart from that, not much similarities.
  7. I've noticed that in my Windows XP laptops, midis play really, really well. But on our desktop computers, one which runs Vista, and one which runs Windows 7, notes seem to cut out. I can't really tell if it's an issue with channels or just too many notes for the midi... drivers?... to handle, or what. http://midishrine.com/midi/40290.mid For instance, in this one, some of the guitar notes cut out when the solo starts. Usually at the start of a bar, when the chords change and there are more notes than normal. Either the guitar won't play the note at all, or it starts to play it, then ends it almost immediately, or ends the note halfway through... It's just normal midis, too. Basic onboard soundcards, no special VSTs or anything. Is it just sucky new Windows drivers, or what?
  8. Hah, this is really nice. I hope someone can combine Brinstar Green with Hothead Bop next!
  9. Awww... I really like this song. If it weren't for a new job, I'd be all over this. My vote goes to whoever incorporates the Starfox Corneria theme and the song from Phantom of the Opera.
  10. Same here, sad to say. Two weeks to work on so little seems a bit off. It's more like an intro to a longer song or something. I was listening to TSO's Beethoven's Last Night a lot, so I was going to try to spin it into something like that, but after ten minutes I just couldn't think of anything more and ended up scrapping it. Sorry! I'm hoping someone can make an entry that's like Queen's "The Prophet's Song", though...
  11. Heh. Terribly sorry about the difficult source. Just found that out myself. Trying to add bits and pieces, nothing fits! Best I can do is add some harmonies. It's pretty much perfect as it is. But that's also what I thought about Terra's theme...
  12. Hmmm... it would be awkward and rather embarrassing. How about one more day...? I do got another song in mind, though, if it comes to it. C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, last minute entry, let's do it! (And thanks to everyone for last round. ^^)
  13. Celes's opera scene from Final Fantasy VI in the style of Within Temptation. Aqua Star (3-1) from Kirby 64, in the style of Simon and Garfunkle's "The Boxer", complete with a "lie-la-lie" chorus. The end song of the first Front Mission, "Within Living Memory", in the style of Riccardo Cocciante's "Quando Finisce un Amore" -- -- I actually have a midi half-written for this...And then Gateway Galaxy -- -- in the style of... well, just about any Pink Floyd song will do. But espeially "Pillow of Winds" or one of the Division Bell songs, like "Coming Back to Life".
  14. Shiny! There's a remix contest some of you might be interested in (though it ends December 15th.) http://www.bearmccreary.com/blog/?p=2930 Snippet from his blog:
  15. Those're some good burgers ... So, inspiration to finish this is coming up a bit short - at least, until my new headphones come in the mail. And I get over this cold. And learn how to record my guitar again. Such a picky instrument. Something Bahamut said about this song when I PM'd him regarding a Lufia track gave me something new to consider, though: I thought, at first, that he might mean that the song is playing at a static tempo, which is true after it picks up. I plan to slow down some parts near the end, and perhaps speed up the organ interlude to give it a bit more bite. But then I wondered, if maybe he meant something else? Are the instruments not breaking loose enough from the song's pattern, doing their own wild thing, maybe? Should I give the organ a bit more leeway during its solo, or let the electric guitar or trumpet synth do something more interesting?
  16. Daw. Thanks, Mr. Bundy - may I call you Mr. Bundy? - and you're welcome, as well. And good job, Mr. 64. Yours was fun to listen to! I'm hoping everyone was just really busy with summer vacation ... I've picked out a nice and short source for next round. Do let me know if the PM didn't go through.
  17. So ... are people busy, or do they just not like this song, or, inversely, is it considered sacrilege to change a single note of it, or what? Also, is further extension is going to muck up the scheduling plans for 149 and 150?
  18. Are they're still accepting WIPs? I got the impression they didn't want anymore. I'd love to do a PMD2 track for it.
  19. Oh, no worries. Just putting it out there in case it catches anyone's interest. Noticed some of them hadn't selected a song yet, and would rather make a bit of a fool of myself for putting it on the table to see if they'll even sniff at it than pass up the slim, slim chance to hear a boss tune I actually enjoy on its own. That isn't Kraid's theme. Again.
  20. Good on yer, Mr. Ambient! Hope you choose a good one. I'd really like to win again. XD For now I have to fall back on begging in the Boss theme project thread for some Primal Dialga mixes... Yeah, that one vote was a mistake. I'd never vote for myself. Could have sworn I'd clicked the right one. Sorry 'bout that.
  21. The tracklist is nice so far ... but it needs more monsters of the pocket variety. Might I suggest "Battle With Dialga"? It's possibly the best Pokemon battle song ever (that I've listened to). There's a few remixes on Youtube, but none are Totally Rockin'. I can easily see it done in an Apocalyptica style, four cellos just pounding away ... Anyhow. There's a midi in a request thread on VGmusic if anyone's interested.
  22. Make one up! That's the fun bit. And how I won my first PRC ... I think. Then in the future, when you've put it on an album and made thousands of dollars off it, tell fans it's entirely your own. After all, tons of songs use the same chord structure ...
  23. Ack, sorry for not replying sooner. I don't get access to my remixing computer very often, and last session was devoted to PRC. Hopefully I'll have an update of the song by Wednesday, though. For the drums, will using Reason's ReGroove work? I've got it set on the MCP-60 patch (60% shuffle), the groove meter set to 90%, slider knob at 15, and shuffle knob at 55%. I'm afraid I don't hear much difference, but if I set anything much higher it begins to sound horribly off-kilter. Then again, I haven't fiddled with it for much more than an hour or so. What would be a better vocal style? I've got my own preference narrowed down to either 3 Daft Monkeys - or The Animals - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hg7jzi9JAkw ... neither of which style I am very good at at all. XD If anyone's interested... do let me know. I may also need an acoustic guitar player. I've got all the guitar parts tabbed out, but my fingers are too fat for certain parts. Or else I could re-write those parts. And thank you all for listening! I was actually rather afraid it was too varying. A lot of the ideas happen once and are only barely referred to again...
  24. http://www.remixsite.org/uploads/songs/9-v2-Binweasel-Take_a_Step.mp3 Edit: Forgot the source link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVpHPh_4uhs I only spent a few hours in Reason fixing this up for mp3-form. I want to make sure the arrangement is good before really delving into the production side proper. In the finished version, all the guitars should hopefully be live, the mellotron sax will be replaced by smarmy vocals (maybe; if it turns out I can't sing/find someone to sing, I'll do something else with those parts), and the samples and so forth in general should be much better. Advice on the drums, especially, would be much appreciated. I sort of ran out of ideas around the end. The original midi was made around June last year for a friend's birthday. Hope to finish it up properly for this year, aheh. The story is a take on a literary character he a created - a bad-arse western gunslinger type dude. Lyrics: When you're tired of the game And you're tired of the rules When you're tired of the shame You have to carry when you lose When you're tired of the people And you're tired of their laws When you're tired of the sheep herd And sick of what you saw Take a step out into the world, lad Tip your hat up to the sun Stare 'em in the eyes, and Unholster your gun, lad [organ bit] So he walked out to the wild Unprovisioned and alone And she looked on and admired The way he stood there on his own On a hilltop, gazing onward She approached him, took his hand Now his darkness is all gone, and They walk throughout the land Take a step out into the world, man Tip your hat up to the sky Stare 'em down the barrel And let there be light, man When she's weak, you'll be strong When she's right, you'll be wrong
  25. I, too, took a while to figure out that double clicking took me to the song's actual page. Until then, I was confused as to why the individual bars were lighting up if they didn't do anything. (I never tried to click "Song Details" after highlighting something until just now.) I don't think it's a problem to keep it the way it is, so long as there's some instructions at the top of the page. Although I would like it if the song's title on the chart pages was a link to the song's page - I like to right click and open things in new tabs. A few other things I'd like to see, though I don't know how difficult any of them will be to implement: - A way to edit song information without updating the song to a new version, in case you made a mistake with the info on the first go. - Some sort of confirmation button after choosing a song's influence. It took me multiple pages and a few refresh attempts before realising that it saved once the information was in the last box, and that from there all I had to do was return to another page and it would stay. Again, clearer instructions would also work fine. - Perhaps some way to set your own influences, if you can't find the proper ones? I couldn't get Twilight Princess to show up, despite that it was listed on the VGMdb site. And what if I wanted to show that a Chrono Trigger "Trial" remix was influenced by Genesis' "The Knife"? Y'know, stuff like that. Other than that, things have been smooth. Apart from the difficulties with finding a song's download page, the layout isn't too confusing (it took me ages to find where to actually look at songs on VGmix.) Upload speed is great, though sometimes it takes a moment or two longer to load up a chart page. http://compo.thasauce.net/ Like this?
