Round 2 track impressions:
The Root of all Things: I really like what you did with the arrangement here Rexy. I think you blended the two themes together well and in a very interesting way. It's just a shame the samples/production weren't a bit better, otherwise this would've been a real standout track.
Wily's Inferno: Orchestral parts were pretty cool, really made the song sound pretty epic with the Wily theme and all. Once 0:54 kicked in I really started getting into the song. The lead synth sounds great and (I assume) Willrock's synth solo is absolutely rockin'. Very well done. Other than the solo though, I felt like the song stuck pretty close to the two original themes, I would've liked to see some more interpretation, but overall that didn't stop this track from getting my #2 vote.
Attracted to Power: Easily my favorite of the round, and thus my #1 vote. Gario I think you did a great job arranging the two themes and making them your own. I loved some of the interpretative segments of two very recognizable themes. Nice instrumentation too.
Mr. X was Wily THE WHOLE TIME: Fun track name. I liked the atmosphere of your piece, the organ, guitars, and whatnot, kind of made me think of Castlevania. Overall I felt the arrangement was a bit lacking and kind of stagnated as the song went on. But it was still a fun song nonetheless.
Smooth Heat: This was another track where I felt the arrangement stuck a little too close to the original themes. Some of the transitions could've been a bit smoother too. Also the track sounds kind of muted? Either the volume was too low, or the EQ was not mixed/separated sufficiently? I'm not trying to sound like I hated this track, cause I actually liked it. I just think with some more interpretation and polish it could be great.
Glacial Age: Mr. L, if this is your first attempt at a remix ever, then you should be proud. I liked the "frosty" atmospheric elements and the piano/xylophone combo is cool. Now with that said, this track meanders a lot and there is nothing really cohesive tying it together other than the background synth pad. Some bass or a drum track would've done wonders to make this sound like an actual song. There also seems to be some off-key piano notes and some timing issues. Nice first attempt tho, keep working at it!
Light Your Way: This was nearly my #3 vote. I liked the acoustic guitar intro and outro, it was a nice touch. The rockin' middle section was cool too, and had enough interpretation of the two themes to sound fresh (since these are like the two most remixes themes ever). Fun little song.
Far From Home: Akumajo never disappoints. I made this my #3 vote. Great song all around, great production, great lyrics, great soundscape. I kept waiting for an overt "For You" reference, given the Wily theme, but I think I picked up on some little allusions to it throughout. I find it hard to believe you came up with this in just a week, it sounds so good. Great job!
Shadows of Wily: So I looked up some of Amphibious' stuff prior to the compo starting and I heard your "Ocean's EP" on bandcamp, so I was expecting some chillout Mega Man remix here. Nope, guess not, I get the exact opposite with some driving rock. Nicely done, this was another song I really enjoyed from this round. Again, I felt the arrangement was pretty conservative, but I think the two themes were blended well enough and it does sound pretty awesome. Nice work.
whatever.jpg: I know you only had like half a day to work on this, but I really like it. I'm cool with piano solos, and would really like to hear you fix this thing up cause I think the arrangement is really slick and I'm digging the jazzy chillout vibe. With that said, the mix is really really quiet and the piano sounds muffled. Was this recorded live, or using some shoddy piano samples? Either way with the proper piano samples or a good live recording, this could be very good. I hope you re-visit this after the compo.
No Ticket!: This is my Mega Baller's track! Yeah! I think Pete did a great job on this mix. I love the upbeat vibe, I think the arrangement and production are pretty top-notch, and I love the train sound effects to open and close the track. Honestly if I could've voted for this I would've had it in my top 3. Very nice work.
Glitch in the System: This started out interesting and kinda quirky. Pretty neat soundscape. I was enjoying it until the the robot voice at 1:30, and what is going on at 1:37, I have no idea. Then the Wily theme comes in at 1:42 and sounds off-key and out of place. I think this could've been a really interesting piece if the first minute and a half could've been expanded and the Wily theme integrated with the same quirky atmopshere/instrumentation choices.
Overall I'd have to say Round 1 was collectively a bit better, but there were some really good standout tracks in this round as well. Good job everyone!
