  1. played wow for like twenty minutes

Seconded. Waste of time. Why play a pay-to-play MMO when something like Diablo II has all those same addiction mechanics you crave, but takes like 0.00005% to get your fix of loot and levels?

Also, throughout undergrad, I had this obsession with beating NES games without dying. It sucked all the fun out of the games, but god damn, I honed my NES chops something fierce. Never again. I'd like my nostalgia to be pleasant from now on.

  2. And don't get me wrong, I've played through all the games I mentioned, and I admit those are great games which have good soundtracks, but that's it, they're only "good". They don't deserve their current praise.

Someone is a Koji Kondo hater. Die, heretic.

JACKIECHANMEME JACKIECHANMEME!! You teach me much, Benjamin Briggz.

  3. Pieces with memorable melodies that are very modular are best for remixes, things that just beg to have something new built around them.

Pieces with memorable melodies that would sound odd when taken out of context aren't so hot for remixing. This is why there aren't really any FFT remixes to speak of. Such a mind-blowing soundtrack, but man, how do you even approach those sources?

    If there's a source that I love-ve-ve-ve so very much, I won't touch it. I'm afraid I'll mess it up :(

This is why I can't bring myself to remix Earthbound.

  4. I'm alright. Just got my computer fixed, so yay.

Still too lazy to study music theory. Still breakin' all da rulez :]

You're coming along nicely though. Keep up the WIPocalypse brah.

Well, hoo-ray!!! I just got my compy all fixed, too! The panic attacks I had every time it did its little stutter thing while it was bugged made me realize how dependent every fiber of my being is on the proper functioning of my computer. Cool!

As always, man, if you've got any wips that need some love, send em my way.

  5. : |

    You'll regret it.

    Betcha.

Don't come crying to me when you do either.

    I already regret it!

    Kind of!

I'm getting along just fine without a sound card, but mmmm, it'd be nice to have something to plug my e-piano into (and don't even recommend a MIDI interface -- pshhh, do you think I'm practical or something?). I can't get too expressive on my controller being that the key action is of the Playskool variety.

When it comes down to it, I'm dropping ~ $140k on my education over the next 4 years -- and it'll pay off big when it's all said and done -- so any little bit I can save in the meantime is essential; thus, no sound card. But in 5 years or so, I'll have a music rig so amazing, it'll make people say "yeah, cool, but can it play gamez" And I'll have a SOUND CARD!!

  6. I just built a very very nice PC for music production for about $800. Now that I've worked out some major wrinkles, it works like a champ AND I can surf porn faster than ever!!!

If that tickles your fancy, let me know. I'll post the specs. Maybe you could buy something similar.

As an aside, I did NOT buy a soundcard for it since I record everything using my midi keyboard controller (or sequence by hand 99.9% of the time).

  7. So here's a little wip about how some guy figured out how to mass produce red potions. Another guy figured out how to cheaply manufacture friggin glass bottles so that maybe there's more than 4 in the entire country. These two champs got together and put the Great Fairy out of business. Now she's alone in her fountain(s) all the time and slowly losing her grip on reality.

    Yeah.

    Maybe this wip reflects that?

  8. I took a listen to a few of your works. There's a lot of Asian flair to it. I like it :)

Yep, you could definitely stand to work on your mixing a bit. Your drums especially need a little love. Nothing a compressor can't fix.

Your synth design, though, is awesome. If those aren't presets, then nice job! Otherwise, good choice of presets!

    Cross the Line is badass.

All that said, I think we could definitely work together.

Ehhhh, so what's step 2? I mean... I'm mostly out of ideas for that Zelda remix I posted. I'm working on glitching the harp part (YOU READ THAT RIGHT) because I want everything to decay and get spooky since the poor ol' fairy is losing her mind.

If you think you have something you could add to that zelda mix, I'll package up the project file and associated audio clips and whatnot and send it your way. And feel free to pm me since I'll probably never check this board again :P

  9. The "industry standard" comes from how widely used it has been in recording studios for a very long time. I've used just about every DAW on the market for full blown songs. Most DAW's nowadays just copy features from each other, so there aren't massive differences in terms of features between each DAW. Pro Tools as an "industry standard" is really more of a historical thing IMO.

I don't mind using it in live recording sessions in a studio but I would not use for full blown compositions.

Well, he was a recording arts student, and the department had to choose a standard DAW so that the students and profs could communicate their project files reliably. As far as I know, very few of the recording arts students in his program actually used Pro Tools outside of class. Most used Logic since they all had Macs anyway.

And none used my beloved FL Studio :(

  10. I'm down.

    Here's a cloud.

Here's my most current wip (needs some serious mixing). It's going to be a remix about how miserable the great fairy is because everyone stopped visiting her after someone figured out how to mass produce red potions and empty bottles.

Sorry, I don't have time to listen to your music at the moment. School from 8-5 every day will do that shit to you.

Do you think we've got the grounds to work together??

  11. One of my old roommates had to use ProTools for just about everything (industry standard! mmrhhmrhm!!), and he hated it, but mostly because of all of its proprietary wankery.

He did comment on how powerful its recording and audio editing features were, however.

  12. I built a new desktop pretty recently for music production purposes, and let me tell you, it's great. At least until I start up FL9. Then it sucks.

Before opening up FL9, the computer runs just fine; no skips, no stops, no stutters. Once I open up FL9, it sometimes, but not always, gets the computer going with skips and stutters that all register as underruns on the MIDI setup menu. Here's the shit: once I shut off FL, the problem continues, and there's no apparent processes related to FL running after the program has been axed.

Shutting down my computer fixes the problem. Restarting does not. I'm running the most recent update of Windows 7 64-bit.

    Any idea what's going on?

  13. Ok I got a question for you. when you did the piano part in the begining around 1:05 did you put ping pong delay on it? cause for a split second my ears almost decived me and thought the song was pumping. you can keep the delay on it but turn down the delay volume down a little bit.

Glad you noticed :P It is a bit heavy-handed for such a mellow section, isn't it?

I've actually fixed that since I posted the version on here -- just lowered the cutoff a bit, and I added some little ambient percussive things to that piano break to make it more interesting. I also did some compression and low-cuts to tighten it up and reduce the muddiness.

And I added sidechained windchimes. You read that right.

I'll probably post that version within the week. Got a nasty exam coming up this Friday, so I won't have much time til then :(
