  1. I already regret it! Kind of! I'm getting along just fine without a sound card, but mmmm, it'd be nice to have something to plug my e-piano into (and don't even recommend a MIDI interface -- pshhh, do you think I'm practical or something?). I can't get too expressive on my controller being that the key action is of the Playskool variety. When it comes down to it, I'm dropping ~ $140k on my education over the next 4 years -- and it'll pay off big when it's all said and done -- so any little bit I can save in the meantime is essential; thus, no sound card. But in 5 years or so, I'll have a music rig so amazing, it'll make people say "yeah, cool, but can it play gamez" And I'll have a SOUND CARD!!
  2. I just built a very very nice PC for music production for about $800. Now that I've worked out some major wrinkles, it works like a champ AND I can surf porn faster than ever!!! If that tickles your fancy, let me know. I'll post the specs. Maybe you could buy something similar. As an aside, I did NOT buy a soundcard for it since I record everything using my midi keyboard controller (or sequence by hand 99.9% of the time).
  3. You're some kind of black mage. EDIT: Or you've read the help file. One of the two.
  4. As stupid as it sounds, I actually prefer FL9. I don't like the rounded notes and the annoying piano roll rescaling in FL10. Yep.
  5. So here's a little wip about how some guy figured out how to mass produce red potions. Another guy figured out how to cheaply manufacture friggin glass bottles so that maybe there's more than 4 in the entire country. These two champs got together and put the Great Fairy out of business. Now she's alone in her fountain(s) all the time and slowly losing her grip on reality. Yeah. Maybe this wip reflects that? link
  6. Those are sounding fantastic! I might have to make my way up to Terre Haute or wherever it is you crank out these badass tunes and learn a thing or two from you ;o
  7. I took a listen to a few of your works. There's a lot of Asian flair to it. I like it Yep, you could definitely stand to work on your mixing a bit. Your drums especially need a little love. Nothing a compressor can't fix. Your synth design, though, is awesome. If those aren't presets, then nice job! Otherwise, good choice of presets! Cross the Line is badass. All that said, I think we could definitely work together. Ehhhh, so what's step 2? I mean... I'm mostly out of ideas for that Zelda remix I posted. I'm working on glitching the harp part (YOU READ THAT RIGHT) because I want everything to decay and get spooky since the poor ol' fairy is losing her mind. If you think you have something you could add to that zelda mix, I'll package up the project file and associated audio clips and whatnot and send it your way. And feel free to pm me since I'll probably never check this board again
  8. Well, he was a recording arts student, and the department had to choose a standard DAW so that the students and profs could communicate their project files reliably. As far as I know, very few of the recording arts students in his program actually used Pro Tools outside of class. Most used Logic since they all had Macs anyway. And none used my beloved FL Studio
  9. I'm down. Here's a cloud. Here's my most current wip (needs some serious mixing). It's going to be a remix about how miserable the great fairy is because everyone stopped visiting her after someone figured out how to mass produce red potions and empty bottles. Sorry, I don't have time to listen to your music at the moment. School from 8-5 every day will do that shit to you. Do you think we've got the grounds to work together??
  10. One of my old roommates had to use ProTools for just about everything (industry standard! mmrhhmrhm!!), and he hated it, but mostly because of all of its proprietary wankery. He did comment on how powerful its recording and audio editing features were, however.
  11. I built a new desktop pretty recently for music production purposes, and let me tell you, it's great. At least until I start up FL9. Then it sucks. Before opening up FL9, the computer runs just fine; no skips, no stops, no stutters. Once I open up FL9, it sometimes, but not always, gets the computer going with skips and stutters that all register as underruns on the MIDI setup menu. Here's the shit: once I shut off FL, the problem continues, and there's no apparent processes related to FL running after the program has been axed. Shutting down my computer fixes the problem. Restarting does not. I'm running the most recent update of Windows 7 64-bit. Any idea what's going on?
  12. And just when I was beginning to think I was good at improv. This makes me feel like I'm a toddler plinking around on one of those rainbow-keys Playskool pianos. You're really something special...
  13. That descending string line near the whispery part, simple as it is, wrenches me every time I hear it. I love it. What a fantastic mix. Except the Frog cameo. Wind Scene (or whatever the 600 AD overworld theme is) would have been perfect.
  14. The first half sounds like old-school OCR. The good kind, even; I loved it. Then that bass comes in, the song matures, and I fell in love again. This is excellent work for a piece that's so minimal. I've listened to it several times over the past few days, and it gets better with each listen. Makes me wish I had more time to make music :(
  15. Glad you noticed It is a bit heavy-handed for such a mellow section, isn't it? I've actually fixed that since I posted the version on here -- just lowered the cutoff a bit, and I added some little ambient percussive things to that piano break to make it more interesting. I also did some compression and low-cuts to tighten it up and reduce the muddiness. And I added sidechained windchimes. You read that right. I'll probably post that version within the week. Got a nasty exam coming up this Friday, so I won't have much time til then
  16. I addressed some of the mixing issues you had, Gario. I think the bass and kick are much clearer now, and I added another couple of layers to the snares/claps to crisp it up. I haven't varied the drums, although they certainly could use some treatment. That'll be the last thing I do because I want the arrangement completed before I write any transitions. My transitions tend to have a lot of moving parts, so I like to have all the parts in place before I decide what to do with 'em.
  17. SEE MOST RECENT POST FOR LINK It's been a productive weekend. Yessir. I finished up the break and added some mega glitchiness. How's it cummin' along??
  18. I'm having a little trouble mixing the kick properly. I should probably scrap it and substitute in another sample. That said, I like the snare The glitching part that plays throughout most of the remix is also proving pretty difficult to mix. It cuts out during some of the higher-pitched notes, so it seems like I have to open up the filter every time the pattern plays. ... buuuut I tried that. It doesn't sound so good :/ looks like another part that needs some serious attention.
  19. SEE MOST RECENT POST FOR LINK Well, dental school pretty much has me where it wants me: in hell. I don't have much free time anymore, so I haven't been able to make too terribly many additions to this remix. Hopefully you like what's been added, because I could use a little positive reinforcement now. That being said, tear it apart if it sucks! Ignore the shittiness around 1:06. Much work to be done on this part, yes. On a related note, fuck anatomy and everything that has to do with the head and neck. EDIT: for what it's worth, I addressed the issue with the glitch effect and turned it into some kind of ambient echo-y thing. sounds pretty cool. also, i just got rid of the lead in the dance-y portion and made that segment a segue into a crazy glitch solo. so now there should be NO COMPLAINTS >>>>>>>>.
  20. harmony! As always, badass harmonies abound. BUT THERE'S MORE THAN 4 CHANNELS, THIS ISN'T A CHIPTUNE. But whatever. It's awesome. The solo around 1:20 reminds me of Back to the Future for no particular reason, so you get bonus points for that unintentional reference. Once again, I'd kill to see this project file. So much chiptune mastery -- one could learn a lot from this. Just sayin'... The piece evolves very well throughout with excellent, but subtle, transitions. The wavering triangle around 1:55 is awesome, hah. Suitably goofy for a WarioWare remix. The percussion is mixed and programmed perfectly. I've never heard such thick-sounding chords from a NES. Shit, those sliding chords alone sound like they're breaking the 4 channel "limit" for chiptunes Loved 'em. No complaints, except that I'd like to see you write a piece with exactly zero chiptune elements. Not that I don't friggin' love chiptunes (refer to most of my compositions and remixes and the gigs upon gigs of them in my music library...). Just cuz, y'know? EDIT: Ah, another thing occurred to me. You and I both tend to write really really really densely sequenced pieces with a lot of moving parts and shifting ideas blahblahblah. It's hard to extend the length of a piece like that without really, truly running out of ideas (or motivation, because let's be honest, writing good synth solos is a little tiresome, though very rewarding). Most of your comps are relatively short and break-free. I'd like to see you maybe write some slower, less complex shtuff with a break or two mixed in so that we can get 4-5 minutes at a time of PROTO goodness instead of the typical 2ish minutes. Buuut, if this isn't something you're looking to pursue, whatevz; the artist has creative license for a reason. Also, add vocals. THe gogogogogomike stuff in the source is awesome. It adds a cuteness coefficient of 4infinity to the equation. That's a lot, I think.
  21. Hey, cool! You're up at an ungodly hour of the morning, too! GOOD MORNING MODUSSSS
  22. SEE MOST RECENT POST FOR LINK Surprise. It's a remix of one of the JENOVA songs. Which one, you ask? Please, you know exactly which one. I've only ever written one cheesy trance mix. This, however, is my first non-cheesy trance mix -- I think it's got some serious personality for being part of what is often a cookie-cutter genre. But I digest... Also, this is my first work that has used dblueglitch. I bet you'll hear it almost immediately The drums are unprocessed and unmixed. Sorry. This is going to be a very busy week with exams, and I won't have time to work on this til Friday, so I uploaded it in this state just to see how you think it's coming along. Thanks so much for your feedback
