  1. Some ones from specific games, since we have a Melee section:

Hyper - Variant of Super exclusive to the Marvel vs. Capcom series.

DHC - Delayed Hyper Combo. Exclusive to the Marvel vs. Capcom series, a DHC is done when one character's Hyper attack is interrupted by another character on their team switching in and doing his or her own hyper combo.

Switch In/Out - In fighting games that use tag teams, switching a character in or out is when one character moves onto the field to replace the character who is currently fighting, who moves off the field.

Tag Team - In fighting games, a team of two or more fighters who switch in and out during the battle.

  2. Broken - Overpowered.

    OP - Abbreviation of overpowered.

Sidescroller - A game that occurs on a 2d plane and gradually scrolls to the side to show more of the level. See Super Mario Bros. or Mega Man.

Platformer - A game that is designed around (or has elements of) leaping from platform the platform skillfully. See Portal or Super Mario Bros.

RPG - Role Playing Game, a game where the player steps into the shoes of a protagonist, dictating their movements and guiding the story. See Final Fantasy or Pokemon.

FPS - First Person Shooter, a game where the action is shown from a first person point of view, "through the eyes" of the player-character. See Battlefield, Call of Duty, Halo or Half-Life

Player-character - The character in the story that the player controls.

NPC - Non-Player character, any character in the story that the player does not control.

Random Encounter - A battle that occurs randomly when traversing a game area. A common aspect of RPGs.

Experience - A common aspect of MMORPGs and RPGs, experience is usually gained through fighting enemies and other things and is the main way to level up a character.

Level up - To raise your player's abilities through training.

MMORPG - Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, a variant of the RPG that makes use of online play and playing with other players, forming guilds and parties to fight larger enemies. Also called "MMOs" or "MMORPGers" (pronounced "mm-or-puh-gurz"). See World of Warcraft.

Guild - A group of players (usually in MMORPGs) who have banded together to help make each other stronger and help each other out.

Scrub - In fighting games, a player who uses a high-tier or spammable character, and overuses certain cheap attacks. Is not usually an effective strategy.

Tier - In fighting games, tiers are a way for the players to define which characters are the best to use and which are the worst. They usually involve in-depth study of advanced concepts like frames per attack, dash speed, the amount of hits before they become stunned, and attack speed.

Point-and-click - a genre of games, generally in the style of adventure games, that were popular in the late 80s-early 90s. Generally exclusive to computers (such as the Commodore 64), these games involve point at and clicking on objects in the game to find out about them, pick them up, and use them to progress through the game. Some would include combat, but it was usually either turn-based or very clunky.

Adventure games - A genre of games, usually point-and-click, but not exclusively, that involve searching for clues to progress through a game. Good examples include Tales of Monkey Island and the Sherlock Holmes series of games.

Turn-based combat - A convention brought over from the world of dice-based fantasy games, turn-based combat involves two or more fighters in an arena (either physical or metaphorical) taking turns to attack each other, heal each other (and themselves), and buff each other's stats. See Final Fantasy Series.

    GOTTA TAKE A BREAK D:

  3. Aw damn... I guess I'll probably end up doing two versions, one short one with as little of the other sources as I can do without completely screwing the arrangement, and another that'll be a lot longer as an OCR sub. I'll still post that one here, but my compo sub will be as much MMX as I can muster. I promise it'll still be hellza badass though

Well I used a non-battle track and no one is voting against me because of it.

They're voting against me because I decided to make a track that's crap.

  4. Zerothemaster (So Now Some Stuff is Happening) - Hmmm do I smell improvement? Whoa, not really sure what's going on at :55, but I'm pretty sure I like it. Not really recognizable source-wise, but still cool nonetheless. Ugh, that chip lead needs to not do that arp bend for every single long note, haha. It's cool in theory, just waaaaaayyyyy overused. Oh, hello dubstep. That section has potential to be really cool, but it's just too muddy to really hear what's going on. Oof, transition to some more Mijinion material around 2:53 was pretty rough. As well as the transition back into... Mijinion again? What the hell is happening?! Certainly an improvement from some of your other stuff though. Is it just me or is it really heavily laden with pops?

I wish I didn't have to use the arp bend every note, but that's what the instrument did and I'm not proficient enough to figure out how to get it to go away.

I didn't think that transition was too rough, but who am i but a inconsistent derpstick

And it could be really bad popwise, I really need someone to show me how to master/final mix stuff because I always end up with either to quiet or too poppy stuff. I can't hear pops, which is really fraking annoying, and I don't want to just turn the mix down cuz then it's really quiet compared to everything else :(

also that dubstep part is a secret guest theme that I just stuck in there for the jollies of it. I wonder if anyone recognizes it :P

o hey i won yay for me

  5. Wow, what happened with the Wildfire/Ben Briggs vote? I wasn't on here all week, and from listening to the songs, I would have thought the vote margin would have been razor-thin. Instead, the voting looks like Wildfire's song was just her screaming into a microphone for 3 minutes. Weird.

We've gone over this a lot. The general consensus is that they ARE very close, but a lot of people are leaning to Briggzy (I think that production value has been a factor.)

  6. TIME FOR ME TO CORNER THE MARKET ON MEGAMAN TRAX trolololo

Freeze Man - Mega Man 7

Everything about this remix just screams winter at me, from the chill arpeggios to the lead instrument that just sounds like freaking christmas. :D

Frost Man - Mega Man 8

I love Frost Man, from his big icy body to his stupid looking feet. And with the verbed clangs and the chill trumpets and DAT BASS, there's nothing in this song that's not winter.

I love the lead. It just sounds like ice. And DAT BASS v2.0.

I don't know why this sounds so much like winter to me, honestly. I think it's the arpeggios that wander from one side of the phones to the other, and that bent chord that everything's built around... Oh, it makes me feel so happy.

THIS IS THE BEST SONG IN THE BATTLE NETWORK SERIES. I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH HOW *cough cough haaack* ow... sorry, but I really like this song, with the cold leads, the chords, the bass... everything just makes me feel cold. X3

...why do I have to explain them all? They're all wintery for the same reason! ;_; Chill leads and arps that make me shiver and DAT BASS v3.0. I mean, it's freaking Chill Penguin!

Imma gonna stop there for now

  7. Hey man, don't give up!

For example, I know when I started on my entry, one of two things happened: I stared at FL Studio - completely blank, and then closed it, or I started putting in random chords / various key scales -- nothing sounded right. Friday afternoon, I finally found something that sounded... well, decent enough I'd say, and went from there; I just did a ton of experimentation. :-D

Of course, I'm not saying that you haven't done that, but the point is... you'll find something that makes you say -- "hey, this sounds kind of neat!"

    Also, keep this in mind:

    - each song you make, no matter how 'terrible' you may think it is, will help you increase your abilities - by getting feedback, what was good and what wasn't so good, and taking that into account and incorporating it into future songs.

Also, you've still got time: today, tomorrow, and the early part of Sunday, as well!

So, don't give up, because this is what I came very close to doing a year ago in the Wily Castle Remix Gauntlet... in fact, I said just about the same thing. :(

If you want proof (after you're finished with your mix)... just take a listen to 'Glacial Age'...

Anyway, sorry -- I'm not too great at getting to the point sometimes, but I hope that helps.

So, don't sell yourself short, okay?

Spike Rosered is an awesome theme as well, and there are ways you can put these two themes together! :D

Glacial Age is a good track, but it wasn't great and was kinda meandery. But even then, he took advantage of the crits and came out the next round with "Northern Lights", which is freakin amazing, and the commenters said that he (along with me :D) was the most improved artist from our first round to the second round (my track was too long, too much, and too idiotic :P)

the moral of the story is NEVER GIVE UP TRISM

    NEVER

    NEVER

    BEAVER

  8. I think I'm going to have admit defeat on this one. Mt opponents source is awesome and u could definitely make something of that, but mixing it with my source is far beyond my meagre abilities.

If I let a little thing like better opponents stop me, I'd still be sucking on the bottom of a pool somewhere in flagstaff.

    Don't ask.

    Dont give up :D

  9. my short, ineffectual, and frankly uninteresting to anyone reasons why I voted since I can't say in the thing:

InferiorG's track was good, and I enjoyed it, but Pathetic Villain hit that vein in me that loves sexy glitch tracks, so I couldn't vote any other way.

Potatoes Macintosh's track has such a funky flow it makes me happy. JackLzrd71's wasn't bad, but didn't really make me feel any emotions while listening...

The vocals on BLT's track kinda ruined it for me, which sucks cuz I really like Flame Stag. Mrs. M's(or should I call you Momma Luigi?) feels short, but hits that chord I love in so much of his stuff... that cold, wintery ambiance.

I really loved your mix gentlemanTameWater, it really satisfied by love of melancholy electronica. But... but... but... Bangy-man Blarghs's mix, man. I'm drowning in all the freaking funk.

Anywho, I can't wait till next week's competition that everyone is waiting for: imAsleep vs. Derpthestupididiot!

PS holy crap Divination I want more! D:
