  1. It seems there's another game that we don't have any remixes for here. Age of Mythology! I remember playing this game years ago, and it as well as its soundtrack still hold up pretty well to this day. I don't know if anyone here has noticed, but I don't always post new version after critiques. I probably should more than I do, but I appreciate all of the reviews I get, and even when I don't apply the advice to the track its for, I use it to get better at composing. Thanks to everyone here! 2. The source is "Ayla's Theme" from Chrono Trigger. I wanted to choose one of the tracks from the game that wasn't done very often, and I liked this theme quite a bit. I made it an EDM piece with elements of trance, house, and DnB. https://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/ayla
  3. Recently, I've been having some difficulty taking a melody and backing, and turning that into a full song. Any advice?
  4. Okay, here's version 7: https://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/golden-memories-v-7 At this point, I'm honestly running out of inspiration for this track. I'm pretty happy with it though, and while it's not as good as I might be able to make it with more work, I think I'll be listing it as *finished* soon.
  5. Version 6: https://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/golden-memories I EQed out some of the mids from the bass, and tweaked the levels. They sound fine, if a bit powerful, on both my headphones and speakers. How do they sound for everyone else? I also modified the pad during the intro. Does it sound more natural now? As for the dissonance that people have mentioned... I genuinely can't hear it. Maybe someone could help point it out.
  6. Version 5: https://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/golden-memories-v-5 I added a handful of extra sounds to the mix, but if it still sounds 2 dimensional, let me know. Also, I can't help but feel that the bass is a little too powerful. Ugh. I need a different perspective.
  7. Version 4: https://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/golden-memories-v-4 Also, Kristina: I do have a new soundcloud username, but it's actually a separate account for my pseudonym that I use for releasing my own music.

  9. Thanks for the advice chimp! I toned back the reverb, but it's worth noting, that the piece, as a whole has more 'verb than I usually use, but that's intentional. I put compression on the kick, which I had forgotten to do, and I like the way it sounds now. And most importantly, I revamped a huge amount of the song. Now there's only one source. It's a lot shorter, but I think it flows a lot better now. Version 2: https://soundcloud.com/sanus-concordis/golden-memories-v-2
  10. Version 1: Version 2: removed supplemental sources. New Bark Town is now the only source. Source: Remix: https://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/new-bark-town Remix V.2: https://soundcloud.com/sanus-concordis/golden-memories-v-2
  11. I mean low(40-60Hz) frequencies that are audible, and flat. Mostly though, I just mean that those frequencies should be comparable in volume to the mid and high range sounds.
  12. I was at a music store the other day, and I compared a few monitors, including the 8" rokits and it seemed that they also were a bit lacking in the low range.
  13. Now that I'm confident that I'll be working with music for the foreseeable future, I'm planning to purchase a pair of decent studio monitors. Preferably, they should be 500$ or less, and have quality low-bass for electronic genres, like DnB, trance, and house. I have my eye on the Yamaha HS80M's. Are they good? Are there better monitors?

  16. Okay! Version 2: https://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/burned-tower-2 Thanks for noticing the bass during the intro. I had accidently used two different keys there. Haha, my bad. I cleaned up the wobble bass, and added some more hats, as well as low-mid frequencies during the half time interlude. Hopefully it sounds better now. I did clear away some frequencies to subdue and shape the kick a bit. It's not as overpowering, but if you guys could be a bit more specific as to why the kick specifically was a problem, that would be great because I didn't think it was much of a problem.
  17. I waited a while to post this, because I wanted to be able to show improvement since my last post. 18. For a first mix, this is incredible. You definitely have a great base for a track. A few points though: Several of the non-synth instruments sound very dry and artificial, particularly the plucked strings and flute. The first instance of the lost woods theme, and the stuff from the original Zelda are where the "medlyitis" bit comes in. They don't sound like they're needed, and seem like they're an 'easter egg' in the mix. The drums are rather quite. Your kick is getting squashed by the bass, at least in the intro.
  19. What stage of production is it best to handle the bass in, mixing or mastering? I imagine one would either mix the bass to be louder in the mix, or EQ out more bass frequencies during mastering. Which is better, or does it depend?
  20. I'll be honest, I don't completely remember what my inspiration for this was exactly, but I see what you mean. Thanks! Anyway, I worked on the absolutely horrible mixing so It should sound much better than before, and I did some work on transitions. Hope you all enjoy it! http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/jurrasic-park-snes-eastern
  21. Lots of the mixes I put up here in the past have been relatively unpolished, in terms of how much time I put into them. Realizing that was a problem, I put a lot more work (at least one month) into this one. At any rate, enjoy it! 22. I took a look on google and nothing came up, so I thought I'd come here; I'm sure I can find good advice from you guys. Anyone have any tips/advice/guidelines for having spoken word/poetry inside of a song? For reference, I'm currently working on a piece in which I want to have a dark, creepy little poem during the interlude.
  23. It's been a while, but here's a new version for you guys! http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/chozo-ruins-version-3 P.S.: Thanks so much timaeus! Your advice is awesome.
  24. Oh wow. This is incredible! I love how it's super dark, but also trance-y. Great variety of timbre too. I only see a few things I could nitpick: - The sine-wave lead in the beggining of the song sounds a little bit too loud. - Fake-sounding drums; they work well though. That's all I can see wrong with it. I personally can't hear the source anywhere, except possibly ~2:07. Great, great job!
