This was my first attempt at composing anything at all. I think it turned out decent considering that. As the name suggests, I was aiming for a cloudy, airy feel for the mix. It's pretty short at only 2:32, but I think I did a decent job making it evolve. I put this as finished, because I have the arangement done, and I don't think there's much I want to do with it. Critiques are welcome though. Enjoy! http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/16-bit-skies-1

It's been a while, but here's a new version. I added a slightly higher pitched drum, and moved the bass drum notes onto that track while I used the existing one for a 4/4 beat. I changed some of the notes in the melodies for a more realistic performance. I also filled in more drums during some of the sections where I took them out. Finally, I changed the backing at and around 1:00 to fix the dissonances.

wip Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Titles (Reverb Remix)
jordanrooben replied to SgtYayap's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The intro is pretty cool, it sets the atmosphere quite well. It reminds me of metroid: fusion's beginning scenes. When the melody (or chords) they seem a little slow and maybe off-beat, but not for long. The drums enter rather well, and sound good throughout the rest of the song. The melody does sound different, so this mix doesn't seem to conservative. It's actually closer to being too liberal. You change just about everything other than the melody. Maybe leaving the melody the way it was could tie it back to the source. I like the interlude, the choir is sweet. The problem though, is that when it goes back to the melody, there's not much change. A little later, you add more sounds to the backing. It could be good to have those right away instead of waiting. Or, have totally different backing in the second section. Either way, it prevents the track from evolving, though another issue is that it doesn't evolve much anyway. In addition, the melody is a little to repetitive IMO. I think there's more from the source you could have used. Maybe use that in the second section to make it evolve more. I could be mistaken, and if I am, try varying the melody in other ways later on, or right a solo. The ending is cool, though when the grinding percussion sounds end, they don't seem to have any reason to, and make the end seem to light. Maybe adding part of your intro to the end could be good. Last, and least, the lead synth is sort of so-so. It's not bad, but could probably use more work. Other than the melody, all your other samples/synths are really good. Just about all of your backing is really good. I love the drum sounds, and the choir is awesome as well. Not to say it's bad, or that it needs a huge amount of work, working on a few of those concerns should make it much better. Good luck! -
The title of the mix is a nod to the area within the game. I tried to keep it atmospheric, while retaining the personality of the orchestra. I also modified the melody, and applied some effects to keep it interesting. Anyway, listen and enjoy! Version 1: http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/forest-of-purple-mist Version 2: http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/forest-of-purple-mist-version Version 2.1 http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/forest-of-purple-mist-2 - I unintentionally clipped the ending off, and I fixed that now. - Re balanced a few volume levels. Version 3: http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/forest-of-purple-mist-3 - Humanized some of the backing parts - Added more diversity to the backing - Added a lot of variety to the drums - Added and removed backing parts to try and have a more dynamic arrangement - Increased the drum volume - Increased the lead volumes Version 4: http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/faron-woods-4 - Stopped the drums from randomly disappearing. - Added a drum to mark the beat. - Replaced the chords causing dissonances. - Changed some note durations so it sounds more realistic. Version 5: http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/forest-of-purple-mist-4 - Changed the fake-sounding harp into a vibe synth - Added more variation to the drums - Put some EQ in (that may not be noticible, however) Version 6: http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/forest-of-purple-mist-5 - Replaced the vibe synth with a steel guitar synth - Changed the drums to more traditional kick/snare/hi-hat style. (It's an experiment, so tell me if it doesn't sound good.) - Replaced the cello with a warm pad - Modified some volume levels and EQ in an attempt to make it sound better. Version 7: http://soundcloud.com/chimpazilla/faron-sc1 - Too much to describe - Revisited this as a collab with Chimpazilla! Version 8 (Mod Review): http://soundcloud.com/chimpazilla/faron-mr1

wip Pokemon Blue - Lavender Town
jordanrooben replied to electric concerto's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
This is actually really good! On the first full listen, my only problem is the kick. It comes in too soon, and ruins the atmoshpere, plus it's the exact same kick for all the time that I heard it. Try to vary it a bit. Otherwise, this is awesome. -
OCR00967 - Super Metroid "Zebesian Midnight"

I can't wrap my mind around the fact that this is from all the way back to 2003. That makes this around 9 years old. This is incredible. It competes with new mixes. Absolutely beautiful, and epic later on. This was one of the main mixes that got me onto this site. Kudos. Great job! -
OCR02380 - Bahamut Lagoon "Stockholm"

Wow! This is very beautiful. Very textural and sparse, in a good, relaxing way. It's sounds quite organic as well. I love it! -
I've been watching this since you started, and you've done a huge amount on this track, and it shows. It's much better than it was at first. I like how it starts, the chords are nice and the lead is soothing. The bell sounds are also good. I can tell you tried to humanize them as well. I don't have a huge amount of experience with humanizing, but it seems to me that you made to drastic of a change to the velocity, and it still sounds mechanical. It might be better if it were more subtle. I like the motifs you have going on, I can't put my finger on what it is but I keep hearing bits and pieces of some other zelda song. Wow, I really like the end section. Maybe you could use some of those instruments in earlier parts. It's still rather repetitious, and feels like it doesn't have any particular goal in mind. I think the edits to the melody are rather static, and don't go very far from the source, instead they kind of shift between two or maybe three notes. Also, the arrangement is quite sparse. There doesn't seem to be any chords, just that cello in the background. Early in the song it's understandable for it to be sparse, but it's boring since it doesn't change much. The worst part is the fact that there's no climax or cadence near the end. The song never really *lives*, so to speak. Overall, I would recommend you add more backing and structure, and some sort of climax at the end. You definitely have potential here, brush up on this, and it should be several times better. Kudos on the source also. Midna's lament is awesome, and ocremix could use more remixes of it. It's not an easy song to work with. I've tried to work with it, and this is better than my attempts, so, good job. I'll definitely be watching this track.

Because I changed a lot of details I talked about, I'm moving my original post below the version one link. As always enjoy the next version! Hopefully I fixed some issues I didn't notice before. Version 1: http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/metroid-main-theme Version 2: http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/metroid-main-theme-version-1-1 - Changed some clashing notes to ones that fit better - Took away the crackling during the intro - Removed the filter on the saxophone during the intro - A small amount of volume editing to bring out bass sections - Added to the progression of underlying arpeggios and chords - Added a repeat of the source melody at a higher pitch before the end to add to the dramatic affect - Removed the source arpeggios during the end melody - Added a few string and piano notes as well as drums hits at the end - Lengthened the last saxophone note to be sustained during the above Version 3: http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/metroid-main-theme-v-3 - Increased the volume on the snare - Added to the intro to make it sound and flow better

In the spirit of challenging myself, here's a tribute to the most awesome title music ever, made using only pianos. There are however, two electric pianos, because after the chords, arpeggios, and bass, the lead wouldn't stand out no matter what I did. The electric piano fixed that. Enjoy! Version 1: http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/tallon-metroid-ivory Version 2: http://soundcloud.com/jordanrooben/tallon-metroid-ivory-v-2 - Major amount of humanization - Minor changes to instruments at the end
-
Alright, I fixed or at least attempted to fix everything you mention except for humanizing the piano. I don't know how to do it in FL studio, and I'm considering playing it live through my MIDI keyboard. It's something i'll work on a little later. Maybe this shows some improvement on my part, but I heard several of the things you pointed out. I never was quite happy with the harp melody in the intro as well as the harp at the end. I have one concern however: is the backing of the first section too muddy? I'v played with the levels quite a bit, but I can't seem to make it any better. Thanks for the all the feedback. You are awesome!

OCR02375 - Super Castlevania IV "Deforestation"
jordanrooben replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I simply can't believe this is a debut mix! It's great! Epic, is only half of it. It's not just bombastic, it's interesting. This is better than much of what I'v ever heard, OCRemix or not. Great job! -
Alright, version 3 is now up! This mix is turning out much better than I imagined. Definitively my best one yet! It's far from OCremix quality, but, it's improvement for me. That being said, I can't think of anything left for me to do. So, this mix is going on the side until someone more skilled than me gets a chance to look at it.

Yeah, the album preview video on the home page shows up over top of drop down menus sometimes. I've tested it in chrome and IE. I'm not sure about firefox. One thing in common was that the two computers I tested it on both had a widescreen monitor. I remember it showing up properly on a full screen monitor with IE. Hope the info helps. It's not a huge problem, but, the home page at least should be glitch free.
