Calling this trance seems almost an insult to the song, if only because this is so much more textured and interesting than some of the standard 'trance' remixes of songs. Really, I'm stunned a description could this be different, it's madness. What ISN'T madness is the easy, sinuous quality of this song. I really like how different this is from most JENOVA remixes I hear - it's smoother and more thoughtful. Impressive!!

OCR03682 - Final Fantasy IV "The Universe"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Honestly, my only fear is that only those familiar with the source tune will truly appreciate what you've done here. That said, this is amazing for anyone who knows it and loves the game, as I do - 1:45-1:55 alone made me sit up and take notice, as I suddenly realized this was going to get even more ambitious than 'just' an ethereal take on an already ethereal theme, and man does this mix go places I never dreamed. The call-in/call-out of 4:35+ and interweaving of different instruments and levels is really thoughtful and at times approaches breathtaking. If there ever was a song to sit back and listen to in the dark of night while looking out the window at the stars, this is it. Lastly, I'm aware this is a place for music, but I must mention the writeup by the remixer. Just crushed it. -
OCR03680 - Secret of Mana "Sunny with a Chance of Thunder"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Man, I am so happy this didn't get lost in the aether... what a wonderful and masterful feel this song delivers, particularly 2:20 on, with a special note for 2:45-3:00, an understated section where the remixer just seems so in control of what they want to do. Absolutely pumped to hear this and a tremendous addition! Well done to anyone who brought this to the light!! -
OCR03677 - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 "Chromed Gadgetry"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I listen to this piece and I feel like it's so impressively groovy that I'm not even worthy to groove to it. I don't even know if that made sense. But this piece just seems to be so polished. Really impressive playing here too, I must add! -
OCR03675 - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 "Samba del Anjos"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I don't know a damn bit whether this is samba or Brazilian or big band or what the hell this is, I only know two things: that this remixer put a ton of work into this project and actually pulled it off with something like 15 live musicians, and this piece is just darned FUN! Congratulations and well done!! -
OCR03669 - Final Fantasy VI "Snowy Pines"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Oh my heavens, I've been waiting for a take like this for FF VI forever and I didn't even know I was waiting for it. Gario nailed it on his call about the ends around the middle, but I have to give props to how well the sections flow. I'm not the biggest new age kind of person, but WOW did the opening blow me away, and I was all set to enjoy the ride through the middle only to be stunned again, first at 3:38 (wow, that flourish) and then at the ending! An immediate download and a huge tip of the cap to someone who managed to evoke the feel of Terra, alone atop a mountain, contemplating her role between two worlds. You've captured the delicate balance of fragility and power, and of peace and war, in your mix. Gorgeous and tremendous. -
OCR03663 - Secret of Mana "A Wistful Heart"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow, I don't know how many people like me missed this posting as I was traveling for the holidays, but oh my heavens is this an amazing track, and one of my favorites on the album! The whole feel of this piece is so in line with Secret of Mana that it just hurts. The beautiful vocal work and brass really combine into something greater than the sum of their parts, which I think is one of the best praises you could give this type of arrangement. Everything, even the name, just crushes what the remixers were going for - I love the work, and am so impressed at the care and power they put into it!! What a performance!! -
OCR03667 - Secret of Mana "Masters of Mischief"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
What just happened?! I'm sitting on my @$$ trying to reconcile this piece with the source. Okay, so doubtlessly this is one of the most innovative/crazy takes on the SoM source you could possibly come up with. At times I really felt like I fell into Sonic The Hedgehog 2/3! But holy crap, at least listen to 1:33-2:01, which is just a wonderfully dirty run. I went back and listened to that section three times! Overall, I have to give props even if I'm still flabbergasted how anyone came up with this - a vision outside the norm, thought, and executed... to excellence! -
OCR03668 - Pokémon Gold Version "Morning Sunlight"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow, what a feel on this piece! Stay for 0:50+ and you won't be disappointed at the way this evolves and feels. Reminds me of the happiest tunes out of Final Fantasy I, almost - a kind of hopeful belief with a tinge of adventure. The warmth in this performance and presentation is what really sells me here. So happy you made it to the finish line - well done both of you!! -
OCR03666 - NieR: Automata "Beautiful Rise"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
A wonderful theme that has encouraged me to explore the game. I particularly love the sweeping feel of 2:15-2:54. I like how the emotions in this piece really vary from hope to despair as well! And I actually love the ending, I had no problems with it at all. Well done!! -
Man, I'm not that familiar with the source but this is wonderful! The command of the soundscape is fantastic, and the interplay of the simple melody and the complicated backgrounds (particularly at 1:50-2:05) is nothing less than a delight. Bonus points for the rebuild from 3:00-3:48, where the play with the melody is nothing short of wonderful. The skills of this remixer are on full display here. Loved it!

OCR03657 - Secret of Mana "Under Cover of Night"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Two major points here. One, I can't believe the difficulty level here - it's like someone took the Nightmare setting from Doom and applied it to an OST - and two, I can't believe how good this remix is. If you want to get a sense of how great this is, make it to 2:02 and you will be rewarded with ever more interesting takes for nearly the entire remainder (3:30-3:50 really had me going) that make you wonder how long this can possibly keep up. And yet it does - again, with practically nothing! It's nuts! Incredible effort from the remixer here! -
OCR03655 - Secret of Mana "The Still Night Stirs"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
By the gods, the ending walkout is even better than the opening walk-in. Just gorgeous imagery and touch. Perfection for its type. -
OCR03650 - Secret of Mana "Azure Your Cause"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
"Having fun on the beach in a 90's anime montage" - well, I see that December's "Best Analogy of the Month" contest is already over. Move along, nothing to see here. Great analogies aside, this remix is fun, bouncing, and it would be a good remix even before the Fear of the Heavens adjustment. All told, really great stuff, I enjoyed it! -
OCR03652 - Secret of Mana "Whispers"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
So I actually love Enigma, and I'm forced to agree that the whispered lyrics actually distract me from the track, but let's be clear - the track is wonderful, and I'm a big fan of what the remixers went for with this effort. It's almost like they could have been separate songs. But I hope this doesn't discourage the remixer from trying something so beautifully ethereal in the future. I definitely give props to the idea and most of the execution! -
OCR03649 - Secret of Mana "Footsteps to Destiny"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
What just happened here? MAJOR PROPS to the remixer AND the site for going out on a limb and even trying/allowing such an amazingly interpretive peace, and this WORKS, and works beautifully. What a gorgeous interpretation, AND DOUBLE DITTO EVERYTHING ABOUT 2:10+, ARE YOU JOKING. I particularly love the overarching piano notes sprinkled through 2:30-2:55, as they seem to hold all the wild foot-tapping, violin, and rest of the wonderful madness together. I really can barely believe this was even tried, and now I can't believe it ever didn't exist this way. So, so, so impressed. -
OCR03648 - Secret of Mana "Flying Fortress Foray"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Man, the write-up nails this one - this is FUN metal, and everything here is so enjoyable. A wonderful take on the source, and the originality really shines through in the middle section (I particularly loved the handling of 2:05-2:28) and the transition into the final part is just 100% wonderful. Man, is just great, and I was having ALL the enjoyable feels at 2:58+. Well done here - this remix totally rocks! -
OCR03647 - Secret of Mana "Variations of Fear"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Oh man, I came on this mix flood just before bed and I said to myself, "I love Secret of Mana, I'm going to have to listen to at least one. But which?" And then, of course, the start of the flood is none other than Fear of the Heavens, which is an extremely hard piece to do justice to because of its emotional and epic range, so I said, "If they can do this, it's over, I'm in." WELL MAKE ROOM FOR ONE MORE ON THE BANDWAGON, because this is just gorgeous, a wonderful, sweeping take that invokes its own magical feel while not abandoning the core of the opening. The instrument choices, the interweaving melodies, and the quiet, almost thoughtful ending - it works, it all works, and it's all magical. So impressed, so excited, so not going to bed until I hear a few more tracks! Well done!! -
OCR03641 - Chrono Trigger "Zeal Breeze"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
A gorgeous work here. By all accounts, at least the remixer knew what she was walking into - I'd postulate this is one of the top-3 most remixed songs in the history of OCR - and so I was pretty guarded, and only gave this a shot because of the ridiculous FF forest melody that the remixer put on the site earlier. Well I tried this and I'll be damned if this isn't one of my favorite takes I've ever heard. It's close to the original, but it (dare I say) enhances the ethereal feel and touch to a level of wonder. I was going to write about it in detail, and then LamanKnight crushed it, so I'll just quote the end: The ending from 3:48 on doesn't disappoint either. Wonderful, disquieting, inviting, and memorable on a piece that has no right to be so. Well, well done. -
OCR03634 - Mega Man 3 "Proto Man's French Horn Concert"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Way, way, WAY out there, and a MUST for any fan of remixers willing to address a source in a new way. Although frankly we're at the end of the scale even for those fans - this remix absolutely takes this into some kind of film noir, sultry setting, where the robots are all around dimly lit tables in the back room of a seedy bar. Props to 1:40-1:55 which I didn't think you could do with horns. Actually, I didn't think you could do ANY of this with just horns. Eye-opening and impressive. It's like you were given a paintbrush and four different shades of red and managed to come up with a gorgeous piece of art! Well done! -
OCR03633 - Final Fantasy VII "In the Beginning"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
A nice, even-keeled mix here. I wasn't the biggest fan of 3:30-4:15 and felt it held too long until it resolved, but the resolution is nice and takes you into a laid back finish. This whole song is like taking a rest on a boat humming modestly through a lake on a bright summer day. Enjoyable. -
OCR03629 - Heretic "Cathedral of Carnage"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I haven't been this continually surprised on this site in a long time. First off, I did a near double-take at someone submitting a Heretic remix - what a game!... and then did a triple-take at the fact it was part of an album... and then my head pretty much just fell off my neck when I started listening to the remix. This thing just oozes professionalism and talent. The opening minute sounds like it could be in the game verbatim, and 2:25 is just full on everything and a bag of chips inside the cat's pajamas. It even ends with a (dare I say) haunting/beautiful walk out?!? MAJOR props to the remixer, and this remix - absolutely will check for more of this stuff!!
