  1. Okay, color me impressed. The best thing about this mix is the tone, which, while there are plenty of deviations and glitches, never varies from a happy optimism, where you're walking through the fields with an upgraded weapon, full health, and all the potential of the world ahead. Bonus points for 2:00-2:30, the calm center of a joyous trip. Love what you've captured here. Shows that even a more 'aggressive' EDM style doesn't mean you can't keep some of the purity and hope of a simpler arrangement. A tough line to walk - but this remix walked it! Well done!
  2. My goodness, calling this an "aggressive waltz" just nails it - great call by the judges. Major, major props for the remixers reaching for the stars on this one. This mix comes across as gutsy and intriguing - I really didn't know if I'd like the mix of styles, but the way you intertwined the vocals with the background/dubstep work really seemed to work! I applaud the vision and performance on this one!
  3. Significant props for working outside the norm without this song being just about an unexpected arrangement - the remix is really unique AND enjoyable! The remix just gets better as it goes along, with the quiet around 1:35 and the entire 2:00-2:30 sections being especially good. I'd like to also comment that this has got a lot of bluegrass without drowning me in it, which could have easily happened. A remix where not just the execution should be lauded, but the design and forethought as well. Great work!
  4. Progressive and brimming with originality but managing to keep the source tune within sight is a tough line to walk, but this remix manages it, and moreover, succeeds at feeling natural and improvisational - truly critical for this kind of take on such an established piece. And the work here is excellent, with some nice adjustments scattered around the source. Props for the backing percussion in particular, which really made me feel like things changed up. Very nice!
  5. Two points: 1) this mix keeps making me think that it's not going to hold together, and yet the total effect is really entrancing... it's always keeping you intrigued, particularly in 1:45-2:20, where there are lots of interesting choices and interplay, and 2) CONGRATULATIONS to both Larry and djpretzel! You (and all who have labored on behalf of OCRemix) have made this a wonderful place that has brought joy to thousands upon thousands who never spoke up in a comment thread. On their behalf: THANK YOU! Enjoy the beauty of the children
  6. Totally unique. Totally original. Thought you couldn't get this level of interpretation without totally abandoning the source material. I was wrong!! I'm not well-versed in this style, but damn, you really capture the ear with this one! Am I the only one that thinks this would have been right at home in the 90's Sonic cartoon? Either way, I think Sonic would be proud about this birthday present.
  7. Really impressive take here. DEFINITELY stick around until 1:35 - the interweaving sections/solos get really good. How have I not heard of this group yet? I am checking out more of your work! Oh, and bonus points for the cool video work - I thought it was really nicely done and added something to the solos - you guys have a good director here. And double bonus points for the consistent source references in the video too! Really a good piece!
  8. This one is a must listen. I can't believe how well this comes through. This isn't epic, it's like... high epic, with all the splendor and power of a regal procession that turns into a brawl in the throne room at 2:45. Really, I'm stunned at how these elements blended together. If you had told me about it in words, I would have said it would have been extremely difficult to pull it off. This doesn't just succeed, it surpasses it. Bonus props for a memorable beginning AND ending! An instant download. What an accomplishment!
  9. How in the world is this a first-timer's arrangement? Man, the touch on some of the quieter sections is handled with someone of double-digit mix experience... or someone with some deep appreciation for FF IX and a talent for evocative and moving sequences... or both! Props to the remix here, as I enjoyed the ebb and flow of both fullness and pace (special props to the quiet handling of the theme around 4 minutes). This is as enjoyable as an orchestral gets, in my opinion; sit back and relax. Loved it!
  10. I really like where this mix went. Maybe it could have been a little deeper or more elaborated upon - I'm not a mix expert - but I know I really appreciated the way this mix turned into a haunting, look-twice-over-your-shoulder walk down Magus Lane. It made 3 minutes fly and was chilling the entire time, particularly with the slightly off-key music box at the end. I call this an eerie success.
  11. Gods, this crushes. The mix starts off interesting just from the juxtaposition of the violin and the guitars, but man, get to 0:45 and they start working together, and it only gets better from there. The write up may say this is a simple rock arrangement, and parts of it are, but man, does that not do justice to the ridiculous transitions at 1:30 and 2:20, where the violin and guitars (respectively) take turns catapulting you into another section. This may not come across as I mean it, but there's plenty of mixes where I'm rocking and plenty where I'm enjoying, but rarely do I experience a mix where I'm rocking and enjoying, and man, the entire last 1/3 of the song is all that. Great build up, great execution, and a beautiful synthesis of two disparate elements into a collective remix that's better than both. Beautifully done. Consider the album downloaded.
  12. This is not necessarily my style, but the piece sure catches your attention between melodies, where things get bizarrely disjointed and threaten to spiral out of control, which is kind of awesome in its own way. It may not be my bag, but it sure was fun to delve into.
  13. Ditto Subz1987 on his comment; I had every intention of trying to hold a grudge against this mix, and I couldn't make it 20 seconds in before abandoning all pretense. Darkesword nailed it: this is one of the iconic FF V themes, and frankly, I can't believe the quality and rework this one takes on. It transports Fate in Haze into an entirely new world while still keeping its truly mystical heart; that the remixer was able to marry those two concepts together astounds me! The bass line through the beautifully sparse main sections works so gorgeously with the return of the instrumentation. I loved it every time. Special props for 3:05-3:25, which adds even a little more feel to an already A piece. Somehow, some way, it must be said - worth the wait!!
  14. I'm no music master, but you crushed all the stated goals of the writeup. Man, this feels like it walked right out of the mid-to-late 80's and plopped down right on my computer. Absolutely enjoyable and fun. Super props for 2:15-2:30; would have been totally legit to end the song there if you wanted. Loved it!
  15. I dare anyone to make it to 1:30 and not get sucked in. Wow does this thing get going - cinematic and amazing stuff here!! 2:25 with the bells and the flute. 3:25's sick music box. On top of that, the voice work is excellent and seems like the song was made around it, not the other way around. What the hell did I walk into?! I'm in a daze. Stylish, immediately memorable. A definite listen!!
  16. I am in love with the way this track sounds. I don't know the source at all, but the holistic soundscape is so well put together, it's really a wonder to listen to. The 1:45 section is a really neat break, but man, the choice of instrumentation and mixing just grab your attention. Again, I can't believe how well this all fits together. It's like someone was given a box full of chiptunes, Sonic the Hedgehog II struts and DBZ-style joins and built a temple, where sacrifices were made to the old audio gods. And they were pleased. Really impressive.
  17. So this is so ridiculously frantic, which is a bit tough for me, but I appreciate the remixer's goal here - it was nailed, stamped, and then set on fire. For those who might not like the insanity, at least give 1:48 a try - it's chiptune madness, and really interesting. Additionally, props for the ending that leaves you sitting in a daze watching a whirlwind of energy slowly recede in the distance, off to claim another unprepared listener. Good stuff!
  18. Not even my style and I have to bow to this creation. Really crushes the groove. Lots and lots of interesting things here; it's like every 10 seconds my ears perked up at another unexpected handling of the rhythm/harmony/melody/sequencing/percussion. You can tell this was in the hands of someone who knew what they were doing. Really impressive. I recommend for anyone regardless of style.
  19. This is unapologetic metal. Wow. I loved hearing Dancing Mad taken into this kind of realm. This is like some kind of cross between an evil rave and a ritual sacrifice. - Holy clowns, the load up at 1:10! - I loved the break at 2:15 with the slow tick of the clock? - Really major props to keeping in some of the choral and piano elements, particularly the wonderful evil piano section starting at 4:15 that you somehow got to mesh with the metal, and later strings and metal?!? That might be the best section of the whole song, the juxtaposition is so wonderfully handled. - 5:55-6:30 is reality-destroying, which is perfect for the song and its context. Serious thrash. Overall, this thing isn't a beast; it's a behemoth, with absurd strength and a backup call of Meteor. If the album is anything like this, I'm grabbing it first and asking questions later. Awesome!!
  20. True to the source, but when the artist is at their best, the remix really takes on an evil kick, particularly 1:20-1:40, the amazing guitar screech at 1:54, and the final orchestral/hard breakdown at the end. I really had fun with this piece!!
  21. It is getting ridiculous how gorgeous and moving of an atmospheric/emotional piece this artist can deliver. Alternatively sweeping and eerie, I think my favorite part of this remix is how it can alternate its level of sound and bring different sections in and out of focus without losing the overall joining of all the pieces of the soundscape. Try listening to this at night, with your eyes closed - it's stunning. I'm truly in awe. Well, well, well done!!
  22. An interesting effort here, where I feel the melody is secondary to the delivery. I'll echo a few other posters here by saying that I'm impressed with how the track really picks up once the melody comes in after the first minute, but the soul of this remix is in the delivery of the notes and themes. I found myself interested and could tell a lot of effort was put into the specific type of sound that was being created here. Well done!
  23. If you are a fan of ANY game of the Zelda series - and I mean any game - then you cannot leave without hearing 1:53-3:01. A gorgeous, delicate take, handled with velvet gloves and a whisper of a far off adventure. Gorgeous. The rest of the piece is very good; that section is excellent, and beautiful. Well done!
  24. How did I not know who this group was before this? I think I just booked the next couple of hours on my listening end. Oh, and as for the song, WOW. Talk about a build up and an execution. It's just a masterful wind up and able to deliver change of pace, change of feel, and still over-deliver. Wildly impressive.
  25. Two major points: 1) This does the source proud in its continuation and feel of the down low funk, particularly around 2:20-2:45. 2) The solo from the ecto is NUTS. Super funk. Wow. Really nice effort here.
